You know that moment when someone or something has inspired you and you take a leap of faith and give it a try? THIS is that moment! I just completed an online course on @domestika taught by @lauramckendry_art which was the most incredibly awakening and gloriously wonderful course I have taken to date! It spoke to me like no other has and I wanted to share with you all my first pieces I made high on artistic inspiration and exploration! The course is called Illustrating Nature: A Creative Exploration. I chose eucalyptus leaves as my subject to explore since I am teaching my own online class on the same subject this Friday and wanted to practice what I learned in the course. The first image is made with black Quink ink with bleach dropped into it then I use some pine needles dipped in magenta drawing ink to make the “flowers”. I then added lines with water soluble wax pastels. The black drawing are made with bleach and eucalyptus leaf prints which I pressed onto the paper and then used a seed pod to make circular shapes. The next couple of drawings on white paper was more explorations with a toothbrush splatter effect made from a stencil I made out of the shape of the eucalyptus leaves. Sorry for the long post. Intro to Higher Ed: #3- Intelligence Theory

Today we were introduced to Multiple Intelligence, a theory that was proposed in 1983 by Professor Howard Gardner of Harvard University. Gardner suggested that there are eight different intelligences through which people learn about the world around them.

The 8 intelligences are:

1. Linguistic- use of words and language to express oneself 2. Logical-mathematical- ability to use numbers to solve problems 3. Spatial- able to think in pictures and 3D 4. Bodily-Kinaesthetic- ability to manipulate the body with precision 5. Musical- sensitive to sound, pitch and musical tone  6. Interpersonal- ability to understand and interact with others 7. Intrapersonal- able to understand oneself 8. Naturalist- experience in the natural world

These intelligences, Dr. Gardner believed, are formed partly by the cultures in which we grow up. Different cultures value different things and this in turn causes people to learn in differing ways. Maths might work well in the City of London, but it’s of little use for the nomads of Mongolia, who would be more schooled in Naturalist Intelligence.

I do agree with what Dr. Gardner proposes. It’s sad to think my 3 and 4-year-old daughters could be labelled dumb or useless, just because they didn’t fit the mould of what our culture deems smart. It’s also nice to know people are seeing things from a different angle nowadays.

Wrestling a Bag of Milk

I’m facing a milk crate.  Inside is a plastic bag full of milk weighing somewhere around 70lbs.  I lift that at the gym, this should be no big deal.  Right?

Well.... the weights at the gym aren’t wet and smooshy.  They also aren’t pillowing out the sides of a milk crate like opaque bubble wrap.  But I’m determined.  In I go (can I say having not clipped my fingernails for maybe too long isn’t helpful at all?).

Shielding the bag from my own claws, I lift the bag uncerimoniously from the carton.  “I’m winning!” I think.  Then I realize the carton is just lifting up with the bag because the bag has squeezed out the sides like play dough.

I plop the whole thing on the floor.  I lift and wiggle and jiggle that giant pouch of milk.  But it’s like trying to pull jello out of a wine bottle.  The more I shove, the more it gets stuck.

Wrenching it from the floor position isn’t working.  

The bag of milk is actually wrapped in another bag.  New strategy.  I cinch up the other bag and pull and pull.  Not to be dominated, the milk bag, which I’m now convinced has it’s own mind, pokes its hard plastic spout out the side of the other plastic bag.  

The other bag tears and becomes absolutely unhelpful.  I’m left with the slippery milk bag and it’s fighting plastic spout.  Obviously, this milk bag has taken lessons in kung-fu or some other martial art.

Maybe if I get my hands under the bag and lift it out of the plastic crate, it will work.  I start grappling my hands and arms down the sides of the crate, turning the giant, cold bag around here and there getting down in and under.  All of a sudden, I’m wrestling a bag of milk.

It’s totally lady-like, OK?  I laugh my head off for a few minutes, reveling in the oddity of the circumstance. 

Wrestling the thing doesn’t work.  My arms just feel like smushed play dough.

In walks a friend.

“You hold the crate, I’ll lift the bag.  Go!”

We struggle, we lift, we pull.  And, like jelly, the bag finally pops out and I swack it down onto the counter.  It wobbles a bit and rocks back and forth, like Santa’s belly.  But it has been defeated.

I have conquered a bag of milk.

...So, when you’re bivocational you, well, have more than one vocation.  Actually, I have one vocation and a job -- at Asbury Inn and Suites.  This is the pay-the-bills job and a pretty nice one too!  But I never, in my life, thought planting a church would involve a scuffle with a giant, wet sac of milk.

I’d do anything for your kids.
