Very happy with my haul from the annual @thanetrc awards. Nice to be alongside some prestigious company including @chrisfennell95. Just the motivation needed for next season. Hard work and a good coach, @blackcatcyclecoaching pays off! Will have to work harder. #trophycabinet #reaptherewards #morepolishing #silverware #motivation #coachingpaysoff https://www.instagram.com/p/BrLbhe0FJPP/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=gqunw5vscvbh

The holy grail for the true BC/BB fan. The complete collected forerunner to Bloom County. Berkely's College strip Academia Waltz I love all of Berkely Breathed's work, and have the 7 full deluxe collected editions of his full body of Bloom County, Outland, Opus, The Sunday strips etc. Everything up to current. So I was delighted to find a similarly packaged volume of his college scribblings Academia Waltz. It's both weird and wonderful to see the early career of the artist. To see earlier versions of jokes and gags we would later see in much morepolished form in Bloom County. Be warned these were cartoons from a college paper. So they can be a bit racier than standard Bloom County. Of course these were from Carter and early Reagan era College Campuses. So by todays standards not that racy. Go to Amazon
The Unearthing of Bloom County's Predecessor Before Opus, Outland and Bloom County, there was the Academia Waltz. The Academia Waltz was a comic strip by a young Berkeley Breathed during his time at the University of Texas, where he would submit his strips and political cartoons to his school newspaper, the Daily Texan. Before IDW Publishing's collection of Breathed's work, the Academia Waltz could only be found through rare out-of-print collections in the forms of The Academia Waltz and The Academia Waltz: Bowing Out, both self published by Breathed to pay for his college tuition. Now we readers have the chance to finally see Breathed's earlier works without having pay an arm and a leg. Go to Amazon
Hairball Not Included The author was clearly a demented college student at an early age, blossoming into a demented editorial cartoonist and then stripper later in life. Go to Amazon
If you're into this kind of humor, then this is one of the best you can find. A brilliant peek into the mind of one of cartooning's great names, back before he refined his craft. If you have all the Bloom County books but still want more, this will show you where BC came from. It's a rough-edged anthology of dubious taste, questionable refinement, and way too many seriously topical jokes that don't carry well today (I had to go find out myself what that "Jester Breakfast" is that Breathed keeps criticizing; turns out it's one dorm hall's cafeteria's breakfast platter, and it's famously awful around there). One can tell exactly when Breathed was out of ideas or was rushing to finish something in time--but there's an incredible charm to it all. Go to Amazon
The humor is decidedly Breathed and this is a very fun book to read I've been a fan of Berkeley Breathed for many years, almost since Bloom County was first published, so it was very interesting to me to read this book and see his work from his time in college, before Bloom County was a thing. I liked seeing the beginnings of a couple of Bloom County characters, Steve Dallas and Saigon John. I don't recall any mention of Steve Dallas ever being married in any of the Bloom County books. I suppose his marriage to Kitzi was enulled or ended in a quick divorce. And I never had any idea that Saigon John was such a pothead. That adds a whole new dimension to the character. Of course, he was no longer Saigon John once he arrived at Bloom County, anyway. He became Cutter John. Maybe a new identity to escape his hippie past? Go to Amazon
This book is SO funny & such a blessing of humor & art ... This book IS so politically incorrect - it's SO freaking funny & that's even before you get to the Bloom County stuff. Its amazing to see the early stuff & get glimpse's for the character development for Bloom County characters - Mr. Breathed is SO incredibly talented - Thank you thank you thank you Lord for blessing Berkeley Breathed with the talent & humor you've gifted him with - you just can't make this stuff up ... Go to Amazon
Obviously his later works are much better but the type quality here is a bit hard ... Opus, Bill the Cat, and and scorching political commentary. Desperately in need of curating Not as good as his later Bloom County work If you like Berkley Breathed Keep on breathing The birth of Bloom Country! IDW Gets it Right! Five Stars Good way to see the evolution of his writing style ...
