Is Before the Strike set in Mordleb? Are they speaking Pfarshleb?
thank you so much for the question! BTS takes place in Farband, specifically in the Grand Protectorate of Coro.
Tumblr media
the characters are mostly speaking Fuss:

although at one point Moon and Flute speak to each other in Bulgur, dialects of which are spoken in Kopst and Bolg:

because i am cursed to flesh out every silly idea i have ever had with culture and language, Mordleb needed Pfarshleb. i could write full grammars for all 3 languages i suppose. it would be fun but pointless.
thank you again for the question it made my day!

i finally had some time, so i made this. it is a huge departure from the kind of drawing i usually do and it felt so good. i wanted to prove to myself i could sort of do this. it's far from perfect and looks amateurish, but i am pleased with it.

Mordleb Trials: Poll #2
The people of Mordleb are free. They check themselves and their neighbors. Whenever a wrong needs righting, the people draw lots to choose a jury of neighbors who might look at the facts and decide the outcome. In Mordleb, there is only one punishment: exile.
There was a crime committed in Mordleb, and Clergy Pillory has been exiled.
Tumblr media
Alas! Clergy Pillory's legs were eaten by an unknown assailant just a few days before the crime, and thus she could not have stolen the pears!
Why didn't she protest?! Why didn't she defend herself more vehemently?! Why didn't she go to the authorities?! Was it because of her faith and piety?! Regardless of her reasoning and innocence, the laws of Mordleb are inviolate. She no longer has a home or allies here.
For whom will you jurors vote to exile?
Tumblr media
If you jurors choose incorrectly, the trial shall continue until justice is done right.

Mordleb Trials: Poll #3
The people of Mordleb are free. They check themselves and their neighbors.
There was a crime committed in Mordleb. Clergy Pillory and now Speaker Holam have been exiled.
Tumblr media
Investigation of the Speaker's apartments has revealed no evidence of any crime. No duck bones, no pears, in fact only fish sticks were discovered in the Speaker's pantry. It should have been obvious to look at em that ey eat only fish, but the laws of Mordleb are inviolate, and ey have been exiled. Ey have no home or allies here.
However, it does appear the Speaker was attempting to root out the perpetrator emself. Er diary questions the unripeness of the pears, wondering if that is somehow a clue. It remains to be seen.
For whom will you jurors vote to exile?
Tumblr media
If you jurors choose incorrectly, the trial shall continue until justice is done right. Do not let your stomachs weaken at the distaste for your duties. You cannot stop until your civic task is complete.

Note
I'm guessing - and feel free to not publish this until this all wraps up if I'm right, so as not to give the game away - but I'm guessing the whole point of the Mordleb series is a commentary on Tumblr's (and other places', but we're here, so) preferred brand of mob justice? And that you either plan to draw up innocent responses for every choice, or have them already prepped and ready to go?
-- CC
hi cc. i don't have the energy or time to finish the mordleb trials properly so i thought i would use your ask to reveal my little point.
i probably tipped my hand with all my pfarshleb nonsense. i am self-satisfied that you nibbled the bait and jumped to the conclusion you did. it makes me feel like i did my job right.
the tags and comments on the polls reveal that yes, people do not like voting arbitrary bystanders out of society, which was gratifying. however, the instinct to consider mordleb a desirable society to be in was the larger point.
in-groups and out-groups. castaways, popularity, shibboleths, exiles and cliques. little do the citizens of mordleb know, exile is not the terrifying sentence they've come to believe it is.
maybe getting arbitrarily voted off the island isn't so bad when the island is a paranoid and cliquish panopticon.
none of the suspects stole the unripe pears. we can't know who stole them, there is not enough evidence and mordleb's draconian laws are stupid.
apologies if this was quite a silly project.

very interesting
Mordleb Trials: Poll #1
The people of Mordleb are free. They check themselves and their neighbors. Whenever a wrong needs righting, the people draw lots to choose a jury of neighbors who might look at the facts and decide the outcome. In Mordleb, there is only one punishment: exile.
Last week in Mordleb, there was a crime committed. 46 of the prized and unripe pears belonging to Baker Heck were removed without permission from their root cellar, in broad daylight.
Tumblr media
Footprints were found leading from the scene of the crime, muddy and anonymous. Their trail vanished into the pond near the old mill, beside the chapel.
In the vicinity were 9 neighbors, listed and displayed here for your consideration, who could have taken the pears. Further details of the crime may come to light, if necessary. Choose wisely neighbors, for the lives of these 9 are at your mercy.
Tumblr media
If you jurors choose incorrectly, the trial shall continue until justice is done right.
