Okay so you know when you say "some things are great in a story but they would suck/be scary af in real life"?
If you came across enough posts of my blog, you know I am moving to Germany, but I am still (desperately) looking for an apartment. I am writing email left and right responding to every offer on the market that fits my bare necessities.
I came across this room rented by this guy, he says to write in behalf of his mother looking for a roommate. It's overall a bit fishy, but I can't afford to be picky. I write an email, hoping he won't answer like the majority of other landlords did.
He answers me just the day after sending the email and at first I'm like "OH MY GOD SOMEONE ANSWERED ME" but then I red the email.

So, I have my reasons to not trust this guy (as I said even the offer sounded a little fishy), but who knows, maybe he is telling the truth, maybe one should grant him the benefit of the doubt. Someone else, though, not me.
Point is this would probably make a banger beginning for a fake/pretend relationship fic, but in real life? I am very creeped out and I want to fucking run.
I am not sure there's a moral to this story except I can't believe this really happened to me. It's wild. And it this is a scam has it ever worked with anyone, my dear Guy Whose Name I Will Not Mention? I hope, for the sake of a lot people, not.

No one will care about this but i need to tell people. I have my own personal lost media that i am obsessed with but i am afraid no one else cares about it.
So when i was maybe 7 or 8 my mom bought me and my siblings a book with short horror stories for children. The stories had colored background pictures and the book came with a CD audio version of the stories. It was a pretty big book (i think dinA3 if i had to guess), hardcover and i remember the cover was red and had an illustration that belonged to one of the stories (i dont really remember, i think a story with a rollercoaster in it?? Really not sure).
Last year i started randomly remembering it and obsessing over it. I asked my grandma and my mother if they had any clue where the book is and we think we threw it away or gave it to charity not sure when i was about 14? I also could not for the live of me remember the name of it and googling vague descriptions did not grand me any answers so i kinda forgot about it again.
Fast forward to this year april/may, i start obsessing again. You must know i read this book nearly every day when i was younger! I was obsessed with the stories the pictures the acting in the audio versions maybe it is nostalgia maybe it was my child brain but those stories were in my opinion the gretest piece of subtle horror i have ever read. I vivdly remember some of the stories, sadly not all.
One story was about a boy who hated vacuuming but it was his duty to vacuum the house, after he finished doing so he wanted to turn off the vacuum, when it murmered “more” and wouldnt turn off. It started chanting louder “more” “more”. Even pulling the plug would not turn it off. The vacuum slowly started sucking everything in things, animals people. Turning the page the before beautifully illustrated paper turned into a blank page with only the vacuum on it trying to devour itself! Turning the page again you see everyone in the belly of the vacuum, everything is a mess and everyone is mad at the boy cor vacuuming! He didnt even want to do it!
To this day i hate vacuuming and every time i turn one on i think of this story!
And there are so manh more wonderful stories. About people living in ur radio, about a person vanishing in a still body of water, about a witches day, an old lady with a houndred cats and healing powers whos house catches on fire, about magic glasses that let you see dead people. Etc.
But the magic of those stories was that they didnt try to be scary, they made you wonder. Try to understand the impossible. Those stories werent happy or sad in themselves the protagonists rarely weighed their morality the reader was the sole person to judge what was happening and i loved that shit!!!!!
Well, i tried finding it again and low and behold after some time i finally remember the title, now side note i am german and the book was from a german publisher, so the original title was “gespenstische Geschichten” which i would roughly translate to “ghostly stories” i always thought it was called ghost stories or something like that, that was probably why i could not find anything on the internet!
Well now i have the title, shouldnt be too hard to find copies, second hand of find the publisher and get the book directly from them. And i find out the publisher is media arte based in Nuremberg, a city not far from where i live. I go on their webiste and what do i see? They sell the book! With cd recording and all the stories as hardcover for like 10€ or something? I buy it and wait ecitedly cor my package to arrive.
Well, three days later i get the email, roughly saying that they are sorry to inform me that they no longer print the book and dont have any copies of it anymore, and that they will send the money right back! What the heck! I was so sad but determined to get the book.
I go on ebay, and there is only one listing for the book. Seems serious enough, says it’s complete, comes with cds and all. great! I buy it! It arrives!

Omg it has the same cover as the old one, looks great, the cds look good as new! I look through the pages and the beautiful stories and old memories come floding back, stories i forgot existed. But wait, this wouldnt be a lost media if i just found the book, right?
Well. Turns out the book i had when i was younger mustve been a special edition, with more stories. I remember it being thicker than the one i just got in the mail. And there is at least one story missing. Remember the one about the vacuum i clearly remember? With the illustrations pictured in my mind? Well it’s not there. Not on the cd not in the book not in the table of contents no where! But this is the book i remember same art style same title same stories. But some stories must be missing!
And for the life of me i can not find the special edition with the vacuum story anywhere online. Not even a pdf copy of it, no traces, no one searching for it. So this is my cry into the void if you are german and remember the story i laid out or the title or the art and you have a copy of it pls i just need scans of the stories they are so dear to my heart i wanna relive the feelings i felt when i read the stories as a child.

I want to talk a little bit about politeness while requesting
As some of you may know, I take requests for writing. I currently have five fandoms that I write oneshot requests for and upload to on Wednesdays over on my Ao3 account. I’ve been doing this off and on for almost a year now, and I’ve noticed that there are generally three types of people that request things from me.
Type 1: Sweet Babies
generally open with some kind of greeting
get right into the prompt
very polite
kind of shy
sometimes include a compliment about the oneshot they’re commenting on or the writing style
end it with something like “hope you’re having a nice day” or “stay safe!”
Type 2: Quick Ones
no greeting
the prompt is very small
bad language/spelling errors/typos
generally requesting smut
sometimes just leaving the ship
Type 3: Entitled Dickbags
no greeting
“Do one with...”
“Make one...”
try to get around the rules
will comment back to me trying to explain how their request doesn’t break the rules
When oneshot is completed
no comment back
“Kudos”
“Liked it”
Now I’m going to be honest and say that I prefer the Sweet Baby type of requester, but I am kind of ambivalent when it comes to Quick Ones. I understand that requesting something can be kind of overwhelming and scary, so you may not want to make it super personal and dedicated. 
I absolutely hate whenever I get an Entitled Dickbag because there’s nothing in my rules saying that you can’t be rude. This allows them to be able to walk all over me and it fucking sucks. I haven’t been able to stick up for myself a lot in the past and I’m just barely starting to do it. When these people come on, it’s clear that they either haven’t read my rules or they just don’t care about them. I have those rules to keep my mental health safe. They’re things that I won’t write about for a reason, either because of personal traumas or because they’re just a huge violation of my moral compass. These people generally come on and act like they’re entitled to have me write whatever they want because I’m an author on the internet with open requests. Their language is aggressive, crude, and sometimes even demeaning. 
If I was being paid by people to write stuff I would have a little bit of leniency and maybe tolerate this a bit more but I’m not. I’m doing this because I like writing, I like making people happy, and I want to explore some plots and scenarios I may not have thought of on my own. But then Entitled Dickbag type people show up and make me feel awful inside. They ask me to do things that are way out of my comfort zone, demand that I do it, and there’s no kind of thankfulness out of them. 
It’s one of the worst feelings ever when you spend hours to days working on something for someone and they just respond with “kudos” if they respond at all. You have no idea if they actually liked it, if they appreciate it, or if they think that you HAD to do this for them because they asked for it. These are the kinds of people that make me want to shut down all of my requests and never open them up again.
I know that this got a bit personal and rambly, but I’m going to try and bring it back now. Underneath is a list of things that you should try to do while requesting from anyone, not just me. Keep in mind that everyone has different boundaries and if they’ve clearly laid those out for you, you should respect them. Don’t even toe that boundary line because that can sometimes still make someone feel uncomfortable or even trigger them.
Opening
“Hello!” or “Hi!” is perfectly acceptable
Think of it more like you’re writing an email instead of just sending a comment or ask to someone
Prompt
Try to make sure that your prompt makes sense, read it over before you send off the ask or comment
Make sure that your prompt isn’t so long that it’s basically just the whole story, this doesn’t allow the author to actually write anything
DO NOT under any circumstances break the rules or toe the boundary line of an author
Make sure that you have some kind of plot in mind if you’re going for that sort of thing and don’t just want something super vague
I’ve gotten a couple prompts just explaining the relationship between characters and not actually telling me what they wanted. It’s very hard to write something when you just have a character relationship 
Don’t have the prompt be so specific or long that you’re making the author write an entire fanfiction for you. A lot of oneshot requestors have tons of oneshots that they want to write or have backed up, so making a request for something super long can be overwhelming
Make sure that you’re prompt isn’t something they’ve already written. I know this can be a lot to ask if they have a lot of oneshots out already, but writing the same smut scene for the same couple over and over again can get really tedious and suck the fun out of writing
Closing
This isn’t required but it is nice!
While “Thanks!” is acceptable do not use “Thanks in advance!”
I understand that “Thanks in advance!” sounds nice and all, but it makes the author feel a bit pressured to write your prompt because you’re already thanked them for it, even if they prompt is breaking their boundaries or rules
After prompt has been posted
Also not required, but definitely a nice thing to give the author that just wrote you a oneshot
Try to notice things that you did and didn’t like as you go down
Most authors like constructive criticism and will enjoy it when you give it to them 
At least say thank you, or that you liked it if you don’t want to go into detail

Speaking of bullies... I got a funny story for you. First ever story on JermaCraft! While I do this mundane stuff.
So... when I was like in the fourth grade, there was a kid that lived down the street from me, his name will- will stay anonymous, because... y'know I don't want him to like- if he watches these videos- I don't want him to come, like, beat me up.
Not that he would ever remember this to begin with... but I- I was probably like the fourth grade... And eh, swallows I was a little S-word guys I was a little- I was a little... little jerk when I was younger.
So essentially what happened, was- this kid, he was a big, big, fat kid: scary, not very nice. And my brother got in like a fight with him, like a looong time before this v- when I was like the second grade my brother's a little bit older than me...
And lemme pick this up.
So my brother got in a fight with this kid and... and... and like I heard about it. And so at the bus stop one day, cause we were at the same bus stop because he lives right down the street from us. At leas- at least he did, I don't know if he does anymore.
So... I dunno why- I was in the fourth grade this so much of a little jerk I was. So my grandmother used to pick me up from school, after I got from the bus stop...
Because y'know obviously you don't wanna walk- y'know, the mile and a half back to your house or whatever it is, mile... Cause the bus stop wasn't that close.
So my grandma used to pick me up, and he was at the bus stop as well, and one day I decided that out of the back window, I was going to give him a double middle finger, as I was driving with my grandmother one day.
I dunno why- I don't even know why I did it guys I can't- I can't tell you one reason why I gave this kid the double middle finger. And from that day forward, he just kinda gave me the w- like a weird look like "What? The hell are you doing?"
And from that day forward I would RUN. RUN, as fast as I could to the bus stop, and away to the bus stop where my grandmother was gonna pick me up, and it was like that for almost six months.
And he never beat me up or anything like that he, eh- he, I- I he- I don- I don- I was like, overreacting.
Actually hold on a second I don't need this... What am I doing with this? I was just putting blocks down! Actualy nonono, I was- I was doing the right thing. I want- I want these. Cause I wanna make like a wall kind of...
Let's keep that going. So yeah, so I guess the moral of the story is, never give the double middle finger to a bully. Cause, you'll be scared for the rest of your life.
And I still am scared, when I like open my doors to like, go and get the groceries... I'm scared. That bully's gonna come get me for me... givin' him the bird.
Yeah- yeah that is actually a true story I did not make that up it- I was scared for like, at least six months. And nothing ever happened either, and like- like I didn't get beat up or anything, so...

more thoughts about the magnus archives as i reread the transcripts
i was thinking about how gertrude robinson was really an extraordinary person (not extraordinarily Morally Sound, but extraordinary) just because of who she was, whereas the only extraordinary things about jonathan sims are things that have been arranged for him (i.e. his role). i don't mean this as a diss for jonathan, as i'm not extraordinary either. it's just striking that gertrude was so driven and confident compared to jon. of course, now we know that basically everything she did was in the pursuit of a moot goal (i.e. killing people in order to stop rituals that were already doomed to fail) so maybe my point is somewhat moot as well.
i've been doing some rereading of episodes on my phone (i.e. away from this text document on my computer) and i'll have a realization like "right, i should note that down when i get back to my computer" and i have forgotten all of them now that i am back at my computer. suffice it to say there are quite a few things i misheard/misunderstood on the first listen, unsurprisingly.
reading through the first 20 or so episodes i'm surprised by how well i remember each of them, considering i was listening like 4 episodes a day when i started. then again, it was only a month or two ago that i even listened to them, so one should hope my memory is at least this good. anyway the first episode i'm re-listening instead of rereading is 22 bc that's the first one where we hear martin's voice, i'm pretty sure
i've also noticed some errors in the official transcripts, which aren't a big deal because obviously what matters most is the audio, but still... some of them have been simple typos. magnus archives hire me as your official transcriptionist and i'll make all your transcripts 100% error-free bc im smatr
(reading through the rest of the transcripts and my standards went way down in terms of grammar/stylistic consistency, as most of the later ones are fan transcripts by several different people. i found quite a few mistakes, but obviously i have no particular way to help fix them short of sending an email to the tma transcripts fansite person like “hey there’s all these mistakes. upload my good version instead?” bc i’m not that much of a dick)
the whole reason martin went to the spider guy's building was because he didn't want jon to be disappointed in him for not doing Due Diligence. he says so twice. then he went back for the same reason. it seems the fandom joke is "jon asks his assistants to do crimes for him" but in this case martin is like "oh no maybe i didn't do enough crimes to satisfy jon"
jon was doing his archivist voice HEAVILY in season 1, huh?
tim's first appearance is so jovial compared to how he ends up...
if this boat lady is speaking spanish in brazil, then it doesn't matter if it was "bad spanish" or not. anyway now i understand why we already knew peter lukas was serving the lonely by the time jon mentioned offhand that peter lukas was serving the lonely. it was my whole “let’s not bother noting down any FREQUENTLY RECURRING names”
well i guess robert smirke was a real person. should i feel dumb about this? idk. it’s such a fictional-sounding name, to be fair. but i guess that set the precedent of using a real person as an important historical figure in the fiction that we see happening again when edmund halley is referenced later on. also episode 35 has foreshadowing for the separation of 14 powers, and people thought it was 13 because they mention 13 halls PLUS the one they came through.
totally forgot about tim goofing around in episode 39... he was really not having the worst time at this job before bad things started happening and he realized he was trapped, huh

listening to the season 1 Q&A for the first time and EARL BIGMAC
also good to know there's only going to be 5 seasons. very good to know. this seems like a good kind of series to write with a fixed endpoint in mind, as it's very easy to do an episode that has effectively no bearing on the MetaPlot but which is still a short story in itself and therefore doesn't count as "filler"

some dumbass writing into the Q&A to ask if the background music is diegetic... get a podcast brain, ya fool. though for my part, i have to say that one of the most striking things about this podcast when i first started listening (though i never made a note of it before) was the Too Spooky Music, and i didn't like it at all. the reason was that i am, and have been, vulnerable to Getting Spooked about irrational things at night, such that it becomes really hard to fall asleep... and one of the things that has an outsize effect on my level of Spookédness is spooky audio. so if i was watching a video at night and i was worried it would Get Me Spooked, i would just turn the sound off, and it would turn out fine. but obviously you can't turn the sound off on a podcast. and i've been listening to podcasts after work, i.e. after 5pm, and i go to bed at like 8 or 9pm because i'm old. so the way it turned out was that even if the actual subject of the podcast wasn't that scary to me, the music would amplify it in an unpleasant way and make me more likely to have trouble sleeping. also i think most of the episodes would have been fine without the music, or maybe with some less intentionally-disconcerting background music.
this just in: i seem to have totally missed episode 50 on my first listen-through, despite having gone in linear order. bc i'm listening to it now and i've definitely never heard this before. fortunately it doesn't seem to have much of a bearing on the rest of the series, so it's not like i missed any crucial information. tbh the only worthwhile bit was a brief moment of tim being a ham, which was good. i hope i didn't miss any other episodes the first time... still don't know how i managed to miss this one.

so gertrude and leitner WERE played by jonny's parents <:3c i'd thought as much when i saw the cast names but i like that it's confirmed. his mom is a really good actress too. i always find the gertrude episodes to be striking in a certain way

i'm tickled to find that the official transcripts have a sense of humor. i wonder who is behind them. i also wonder, what is the excuse for not having a full set of official transcripts when it is a script-based show? surely you know what is going to be said beforehand, and you have it written down, and if someone ends up saying something different in the final recording, surely it wouldn’t be too hard to give the original script a little edit, and bam! that’s a transcript. i wonder if this approach is not feasible for some reason.

i think episode 110 is an instance of the tape recorder turning ITSELF off... at the end of the episode. because they walk away, and they say something distantly, and then it turns off. lots of other times, there had to be a diegetic reason for the tape recorder to turn off at the end.
i noticed something which i missed last time, which was that there is a rumor between melanie and georgie and basira that implies that jonathan is asexual. worth noting, i think. [side note added in later: yeah it’s canon. cool]
also i listened to episode 103 again and yes. i had thought-- i had been SURE-- that the person interrogating the traffic cop (using the asky ability) was martin. but it was actually jon. how did i possibly manage that mistake? i'm not great at distinguishing voices, but i'm not THAT bad. the only possible answer: when i was listening to the episode for the first time... i must have been eating a crunchy snack.

YES i knew episode 100 was improvised. and i see, all the statementers had actually had supernatural experiences, but because the archivist was absent, their statements didn't have the coherence and clarity normally lent to them by the eye (in exchange for becoming cursed). i think melanie or basira actually said pretty much that in the episode itself, but i still couldn't be sure that all of those people had something real to talk about.

jonny sims mentions another podcast (apocrypals) that sounds 100% up my alley, so that is appreciated, i will add that to my list i think. (listened to episodes 0 and 1 of apocrypals and i'm heavily struck by how VERY clearly i can hear the smiles in chris sims's voice. i did not know smiling could be so audible, truly.) (listened to quite a few more episodes of apocrypals and it’s certainly entertaining at times. i should’ve been reading along though. maybe some other time)
I DIDN'T LISTEN TO THE SEASON 4 TEASER THE FIRST TIME AROUND.........................................
i must confess something that people who know me well may already know: i hate when stories have a bad ending. an unhappy ending. a painful ending. a hopeless ending. bittersweet is the furthest in that direction i can tolerate. my perspective, which is pretty deep-seated, is that there's no point in getting to know and love characters if you're only going to be hurt by that connection to them when the end turns out to be bad. if i have even a mild inkling that a story is heading toward a bad ending, i make a conscious effort to regard all characters from afar and not develop any strong attachments. this is not so much "how i think all stories need to be," but rather, "the characteristics a story needs to have to appeal to me personally." so i understand that my view is very subjective and mostly based on my own mental weakness. but i can't help but apply it to the media i consume. and the idea that someone would do something like "make characters very human and strongly developed" IN COMBINATION WITH "heading toward a bad end" makes me upset. like, picture a horror movie. think about the characters in a horror movie. with the exception of a main character, if there is one, there's no guarantee that anyone is going to survive to the end of the film... BUT... the characters generally aren't fleshed out and very sympathetic. i wouldn't go so far as to say they're disposable, but you're not SUPPOSED to cry when they die; you're just supposed to get scared. their purpose is as objects of fear, and you never expect or even hope for a happy ending. but in the magnus archives... all i'm saying... is that i would cry if any of the remaining members of the main cast died. and it seems clear that we're not heading to a happy ending. so i'm somewhat afraid, and not in a good way. i don't know how much i can trust jonny sims to give me the story i want, and obviously, i'm not entitled to it.
if your name is jonathan and you want to shorten it, the short form is jon. it ain't john, no matter what the official transcripts say. where'd you get that h, huh? stole it from someone else's name? are you shortening it like JOnatHaN? you can’t just be that sneaky!
i listened to scrutiny again and it hits so hard. now, in heart of darkness, when manuela begs jon not to force her statement, it's really heavy given the direct context of the previous two episodes where we see how compulsion works and how it hurts.
also when jon was talking about how to destroy the dark sun and he was like "i just need to see it," when i first heard it, i assumed he meant something along the lines of, "by seeing it, i will learn how to destroy it." but now i understand that the mere act of the eye seeing it destroys it, because being known is what the darkness is weakest to.
the magnus employees who work in the library probably at least have a LITTLE BIT of a feeling that they work in an almost normal place, given that jon and all his assistants were able to have that impression before transferring to the archives. so i wonder how the magnus library people feel about their institute's director getting arrested for double murder and now the big boss is a completely unrelated ship captain who seems to want nothing to do with the place but simultaneously is trying to continue business as usual
on second listen, listening to jon ask helen when the guilt stops (wrt hurting people in order to feed one's patron fear) is pretty chilling. because it seems like he's definitely accepting that he will have to hurt people, and what he's concerned about is how bad it makes HIM feel. of course, helen then answers with precisely what i just wrote, so...
i should've read the transcript for episode 159 instead of relistening because i forgot that peter lukas's actor got so gravelly and hard to listen to in this one. anyway, time to re-listen to the season 4 finale... then i'll listen to the season 4 Q&As and stuff... and then the new episode. (DOKI DOKI DOKI DOKI DOKI)
i heard in the Q&A that the voice of peter lukas did multiple takes for episode 159?! but it was because of technical difficulties. right. because i can’t imagine the way it turned out being deemed the best take. sorry
ok, things i missed last time i listened to 160: daisy and the other two hunters are missing. also jon mentioned "magnus's body" and martin mentioned "an old man's corpse" and at the time i took this to mean (somewhat unthinkingly) that when jon and martin returned from the lonely, they killed elias/jonah's body. which would be a weird thing to happen "off-camera," so to speak. so i think i must have been wrong? slightly confused. ok, no, i'm now sure that elias survived, so i must have misunderstood. definitely alive.
as martin leaves and jon is about to begin the statement, he sounds so peaceful and satisfied. that's good acting.
by the way, in one of the previous few episodes, i noticed that jonah seems to have body-swapped by switching out his eyes into his preferred body, which i'm pretty sure i missed the first time.
i like that jonny sims checks reddit to see whether people have solved the mystery. that's just a really funny way to do things, sneaking a peek like "hmm how mysterious is my mystery? let's see who has figured it out..." and for the record, i wasn't even close to figuring it out. but to be fair to myself, i didn't try. like i said from the beginning, i started listening with the intent of going along for the ride. plus the mystery had already been solved before i started listening to the series, so it's not like i had a lot of time in between updates to contemplate whether elias was jonah, etc.

final conclusion on rereads/relistens: i had pretty poor comprehension of some important happenings. i’m realizing just how easy it is to mishear/fail to hear exactly what is happening in a podcast when you’re doing other stuff at the same time. there are still a couple things i don’t quite understand, but i think i’ll have a look around the wiki one of these days.

So, to be honest, I feel like with everybody he's speaking out about their own stories it's pretty much already finished, and clearly we all know he tried to go on that crazy smear campaign essentially turning all the accusations against him against me, which, I mean, was pretty nuts but if you watch it it's pretty obvious what he was trying to do, so. >He outed someone’s sexual assault after she came out. Yup! Well, Greg actually made sort of an underhanded joke in a video about something that he very vaguely knows about me and it seemed like he was just trying to let me know that there was more about me that he knew that he could talk about, which he, you know, has brought up before over email asking me about the abuse that I suffered in my past, and I told him that it all wasn't true because he, you know, was clearly doing it to try to use it against me, and I am not going to be blackmailed by the things that I've already been through my life. Like, that's pretty… pretty nuts to assume that that would silence me. I mean, I've never been quiet about what I've been through in my life so it's just a little nutty but he does very clearly dig up people's pasts and look for abuse to try to use it against them because a lot of people aren't comfortable with having their abuse stories public. I'm not really afraid of stuff like that I feel like I've always been pretty open with my following so that does not scare me. [Playing video games] >If you come out with your trauma, he’s got nothing against you. Yeah, I actually spoke to my mom about it because I didn't really know what to do if he does ever decide to try to like publicly smear me for getting abused as a child. I don't really know what the right course of action is. My mom just said, “have you ever seen Eight Mile?” You know, if there's anything you think he's gonna throw at you just throw it out first and he's got nothing, and I feel like in a lot of ways she's right. Though, I was never really quiet about it before. >What happened when you were caught sneaking out? He just tried to convince us to stay but it was pretty evident at the time that that was not a situation we needed to be in. >He thinks because he shares way too much that no one else should have boundaries. I believe that he over shares about himself because he gets some sort of validation from me but he is very aware that people have boundaries, and I think that that's why he does it. So he can say that he thinks that everybody should be open but it's not typical for everybody to put, you know—everything that's ever happened to them on the internet. I mean, I haven't talked about every single thing that's ever happened to me my whole life. I talk about important things. I've talked about, you know, mental health issues. I've talked about fear. I’ve talked about a lot of different things, so… >He needs to have basic respect in the first place. That is true. I mean, he has gone out of his way to try to out a lot of people for things that they didn't want public so that they would stop coming out and speaking about the things that he has done, and clearly it's not working. I've been in contact with a lot of the girls who suffered from some of these situations and it's not really working on them either. I'm so glad for that because I can tell you from the first time that he went on a crazy smear campaign  about me it was terrifying. I had no idea what to do. I mean, I posted a video crying on the internet because I had asked him so many times privately to stop speaking about me, and stop using my name, and my face, and everything like that. He does not respect boundaries. He does not respect people's privacy. He will post your deepest darkest secrets if he has to to try to make you look bad, and for me, you know, my deepest, darkest secrets aren’t even bad things that I’ve done. They’re bad things that have happened to me. I really feel like I might be, you know—it might be a better idea to just come out and speak about what happened to me as a kid before he tries to use it against me, which I don't even know how he would try to do that or how he would try to spin it to make me look bad because I don't think that you should ever blame a child for being abused. It’s clearly not their fault, but… >He's quite the sunshine, isn’t he? Yeah. >Did he ever use publicity as a threat? So, he doesn't ever say specifically that he’s going to do things like that. I think that he just does it and it's typically whenever he feels that he is losing power in the situation or he does not have control over a situation. He will do things like that. Yeah, he talks a lot about how he's getting death threats now because of everything that's going on, and it's actually a classic manipulation tactic to try to play the victim and deflect blame whenever you are caught up in something. >He wants to manipulate you so you’ll stop talking about him. Yeah, I understand that. I mean, I was very aware what he was doing even the first time when him and my best friend didn't work out. Well, and then Lainey and my best friend didn't work out, and he went on this crazy campaign to try to make us look awful because he knew that we were very aware of all of the crazy things that he did and requested. >What did you mean last time you said he very different online as when he’s offline? In person, I would say he's he's very charismatic, which is, I think, very different from how he is online. It's a little more, I think, cold online. It's a little more calculated. If he does post things for a purpose online whereas in person he just uses a specific way of speaking to get what he wants. So, it doesn't take as much effort in real life to do the things that he does. >Has he verbally and psychologically abused these girls? Yes, absolutely. It's actually pretty scary to see the way that he goes about things because he does pretty much all looks a typical manipulation tactics where he starts off with very positive reinforcement and love bombing and slowly but surely he will sort of take away those things or he will sort of mistreat you if you're not acting the way that he wants. He’ll threaten to send you home or take things away or a lot of different things. He will insult you if you are not acting the way that he wants. He will clearly publicly humiliate you if you're not behaving in a way that he finds acceptable. >Do you think that the judicial system is going to be able to make a case against him? From what I can see, Greg is very careful to make sure that he skims that legal line so that he will not get in trouble. He's very tactical about the way that he does these things so that legally there's nothing you can do. I can tell you  times a day that he's morally corrupt and, you know, he gets into people's heads and it's scary to be honest, but he works very very hard to make sure that he will get away with these things, and that's why I felt like saying something publicly is really one of the best things that I could do because even if everything he's doing is not against the law per se, that doesn't mean that it's morally right or that people should not know that he's doing these things to young women and it's not, you know— Young women out there should have access to the information that you will manipulate his way into getting you to do things that you would have never done or say things that you would have never said before and… yeah. >How do you feel about him— Ok, so. I didn't ever try to sleep with that young woman. I think I've made that pretty clear. It was clearly a defence tactic to try to sort of deflect blame onto someone else. I was 19 years old at the time. I was also a teenager and he clearly tried to paint me as this horrible pervert, and I didn't ever try anything with her but I was also a teenager at the time, which has no comparison to a 33 year old man or a 25 year old woman doing similar things. I know he tried really really hard to make it look like I was this awful person and I'm sure it's pretty obvious, like, how he did it and why he did it and I'm actually very glad that people can understand that I'm not that kind of person. >He tries to punish these girls for acting ways he deems disrespectful That's true. He once threatened to send the young woman that was discussed before and also Billie home because they wouldn't babysit his children. So, it's pretty crazy. >Does he restrict everyone from seeing their family? He did ask one of these girls to not contact her family for an entire year and move in with him and have no contact with anybody from where she lived including myself. So he does go through and use isolation as another tactic to keep these girls, you know, within his grasp. All of its kind of messed up it's just I know that they skim the legal line. Everybody says go to the police but I plan on talking to the police and bringing them all of this information but they are very careful about whether or not they break the law so that even if  this all comes out one day and people realize what he's been doing to these women that he can't actually go to jail it would just ruin his YouTube, but it's pretty… [sigh]. Just the whole thing's messy. >Let the police decide what to do. Right, and I do plan that. I'm actually not in my hometown right now, which is the only reason they haven't gone to the police yet, but I will be going back tomorrow but I plan on going to the police and sort of giving them all of the information that I have and ask them what I should do about it. About the videos he's made about me painting me as a pervert and about all of these things that he's doing to these young women because he's clearly got a pattern. There's clearly a very evident way that he goes about things, but I’ve been doing research to try to understand a little better how he does these things because it's scary and it's important that you can recognize the things that he does, or the things that anybody like that will do. >Can you go into detail about him getting mad at the two girls not wanting to babysit? Those are the details that I have, that they were not doing an adequate enough job to babysit so he threatened to send them both home. >Has Greg tried to contact you since the last e-mail? Other than the text that he posted in his video trying to smear me he has not contacted me since then, no. I know it’s not their job. [As in, not the girls job to babysit] >Did Lainey genuine want a relationship with a female? I have no idea what Lainey really wanted. It was a deflection tactic very clearly. I was 19 at the time, like, it's just crazy to be painted as a pervert when, first of all you didn't do anything, but also, like, a teenager talking to a teenager. I don't know it just doesn't make any sense see why he was under the impression that that would work, and I'm sure that it was just an intimidation tactic to be like, hey, you know I can make you look bad, too, but it's not just me coming out and speaking about the things that they've done. I think that me being able to come out and say anything at all has inspired a lot of young women who have suffered through this to come forward and tell their stories and share what happened. >Greg is scared of you. I don't think he should be scared of me. I think he should be scared of the truth. I have never done anything to Greg. I have never really been rude to him him. I have never really done anything to him other than being vocal about the abuse that he so clearly associates himself with. I mean, the first time he went on a smear campaign it was because I was public about some of the things that he did to my best friend even when she wasn't because he was trying so hard to make her look awful, and I tweeted about how he tried to chain her up in the basement for a week, and make her shave her head, and dye her moss hair, or get I'm a liar tattooed on her. Even cornered her in the garage once to try to convince her to get a tattoo, and I came in shortly after and I was like, this is not okay, and that's actually the day that we left. >What was the last straw? So, for a long time I really was just too scared to say anything because after I said anything about what he had done to my best friend he went on this horrible smear campaign about how I’m a criminal and a degenerate and all of these things and I was scared. I mean, he made videos about me for over a year after I had even seen him. I only met him one time. So it took a long time. I mean, it's been two years since this situation happened—two years in a month, I think. For a year and a half of that I was still on the front page of his YouTube, or I was in his videos, or he was referencing me in a lot of different ways, and I was scared because I don't know what he's capable of. >Why was Sarah under the [inaudible]? I have no idea. Because that’s what they said. >Standing up to Greg was very brave of you. It took a lot. I mean, to this day it still takes a lot. It's only been a short time since I came out and I haven't really been sleeping because I know some of the girls that he's trying to blackmail and use information against to keep their silence and it's scary. That's just, like, I don't want him to try to ruin my life because I think that it's important that people know what he does young women and what he tries to do the young women, though not always as successful as he’d like to be. >Do you think he sees himself as a normal guy? Well, maybe he does. I feel like it would be scarier if he didn't realize what he was doing. I feel like it's pretty impossible to be so good at manipulating and doing it to so many people without even realizing. I don't even really think that that’s a thing. >How does he think any of this is ok? I really don't know. I feel like for somebody who comes off as honest and moral and some white knight it's pretty insane. I mean, he once posted an email he got from an ex-friend of mine on Twitter, like, trying to paint me as this awful person. I had to email him and have him take it down because the e-mail was from somebody who I knew in real life but I had had to threaten to call the police on that person before for showing up at my house and it was pretty clear then that if he has anything from anyone that could put you in a bad light, whether or not that person is dangerous to you, he will use it, and he acted like he was my hero for even taking down that post. Also whenever he e-mailed me about—asking me about the abuse that I suffered as a child he insinuated that I should be thankful that he hasn't said anything about that publicly online, and I know that that was just another tactic to get me to not say anything but it's pretty scary. He goes through a lot of effort to make sure these people are too scared to come forward and a lot of them are. I'm sure that there's many people who won't even say anything about it because they're worried about what he's going to do, and I knew going into that it would be really really hard to do this and that he would go out of his way to try to make me look bad, and make videos like the one that he posted, trying to paint me as this awful person, and I knew that from experience. He's done it to me before but I realized that it was more important to come out to speak about this so people will know what's going on instead of avoiding it to try to save himself. I would rather you know go down in a blaze then let two, or three, or four more people go through this. Yeah, I do think it's pretty crazy that whenever he was attacking Richie, he says that he defended me from blackmail from Richie, and that—Richie was gonna come out and say all these bad things about me, and though Richie did threaten to blackmail me so I wouldn't speak out about the fact that he had cheated on me so many times and he was looking for 18 year old girls, you know, Richie was trying to keep me quiet, too, using the same tactics that Greg used because he's got such a large following. He tried to defend me when Ritchie was trying to blackmail me, but now he himself is trying to blackmail all of these other girls. I think it's so twisted and crazy that he acts like he’s such this, you know, righteous person for defending me at any point but he goes around and does the same thing to not only me, but to so many other people. I didn't offer anybody drugs. I smoke marijuana. We've been over that, but I don't go around handing people drugs. I don't even have any drugs. I mean how was I even gonna get these drugs if I was locked in his house. That’s what I want to know. Well, I wasn’t locked in. Clearly I could have left because I did. Yeah, no. I didn’t. Not a thing. I never hit on Sarah. She [Billie] has very much separated herself from this situation and she's got no interest in diving back into it because clearly they will never leave her alone. >What other red flags did you notice? It's pretty—it’s, like, typical language. I mean, he will offer financial gain or financial loss. He will insult you, or make fun of you, or try to make you feel like you're doing something wrong if you're not acting the way he wants you to. It's a lot of different things. I know that he made a video with me and that's normally all he needs to write off stuff in taxes, so even in his vide he said that he paid for my tickets. It’s pretty typical for him to write things like that off on those taxes. So, again, just another way to try to make me look like I was doing something that was wrong, I guess. >Question about how Billie is doing She's good. Billie’s actually great. She's really happy now. She's been working a lot on YouTube channel and trying out new things and she's really a lot happier than she was. He once called me and essentially spoke to me non-stop for about an hour just about how—what started off, oh, Lainey misses Billie, and Lainey needs closure, and then he pretty quickly went into, like, Lainey has dreams about her all the time. Pretty quickly into, oh, I have dreams about her and I can't get her out of my head. So, he was using Lainey to try to say she's the one who needed something but yeah. It's clearly him because he only talked about himself in the end. >Do you know more women will be coming forward? Truthfully, I hope that they do but I know that not everybody is willing to go through what I'm already going through to try and take him down. It's pretty scary especially when you are a young woman to have you know a 33 year old man trying to essentially defame you. I mean, it's terrifying for me and I'm a lot older now than I was the first time. Greg said a lot about my best friend cheating but that never happened. Not a real thing. >Has Lainey ever talked bad about Greg? Yes? Though not publicly. Yes, I was in contact with that young woman. And she contacted me, so it was direct. I don’t think that they claimed her on their taxes. I am going to go to the police and bring them all of the information that I have but they are very careful about skimming that legal line so I don't know that they will do anything about it but I will be giving them all of that information just to make sure that they are aware. >He's the Youtube version of R. Kelly I feel like I've seen it a lot. That's funny. We never encouraged anybody to starve themselves. Billie and I have never had an eating disorder. We've never been diagnosed with an eating disorder or treated for an eating disorder. I'm 130 pounds right now at 5’6”. I mean, by no means underweight I've been essentially this weight since high school, so, you know. It was pretty much just a part of the initial smear campaign him saying that we starve ourselves and we've got all of these issues, but it was never a real thing, which my mom tweets about a lot actually. Every time my mom sees me eating she'll tweet a picture of it because there have been so many rumors about me having an eating disorder because of Greg. >Is there anything you haven’t said because you’re scared? There are things that I am not going to share because it has been requested of me not to share but, no. There's no information that I have about them pertaining to me specifically that I have not at least tried to share. >It can mentally screw with you. Right. Well, it was pretty crazy for a couple months having my whole feed just being like, oh, stop starving yourself… [irrelevant talk] I don't mind you asking any specific questions. There are just some questions that I don't really have a clear answer to. i had a mental breakdown during my first Saturday morning sabbath service. my fiance is jewish and was supposed to help me but he got lost, so then i got lost. my worst fear is making a mistake so i got so stressed out that i couldn't stop crying. i left right before the ark was opened and walked around the city crying for hours. i emailed the rabbi and she said i should come back next week. how do i cope with making such a big scene? im afraid that im just too anxious and stupid to convert.

Okay, so embarrassing story time. 
(Warning: this is a little gross & TMI, but hopefully nothing too squicky or inappropriate) 
It’s three (at most four-five, but I really think it was only three) weeks into attending services at my first congregation and we’re in the middle of Torah study. I go from being 100% fine and listening attentively - I hadn’t yet mustered the courage to start actually talking or contributing - to realizing I needed to be in the bathroom, like, two minutes ago. 
So I bolt. 
(Important editorial note: I am genderfluid and my presentation changes. At this point, the rabbi knows this, but most everyone else doesn’t.) 
I get to the bathroom and proceed to have an incredibly painful situation, the highlights of which include bloody diarrhea and blacking out for a few seconds which results in me falling and bruising my face. 
After being in there about a half hour, apparently the rabbi dips out to come check on me. In the men’s room. Which I am not in. 
So then he pulls aside one of the women who had taken me under her wing and has her check on me in the women’s room. 
I pathetically try to tell her I’m okay, and she (being a mom and therefore Knows) insists on taking me to urgent care, who then proceed to send me on to the emergency room. 
The upshot of all of this is that within the first month, I have an Incredibly Personal and Humiliating Health Problem that people actually find out about because it happened at shul, and also this is how at least some folks found out that I’m non-binary. 
SO the moral of the story and reason why I’m oversharing with you is this: Embarrassing stuff happens. You know how people responded? They were nice. Like really, really nice. Said aforementioned friend even took me to the ER and actually offered to help me pay for it once she realized my partner and I were flat broke at the time.

I know starting can be really scary and anxious and trust me, I was on the verge of tears the first couple times I went because I didn’t know how to be in that space yet. Truly, I get it. 
But you’re not stupid and you won’t be anxious there forever. And, there’s no way you embarrassed yourself as much as me. ;-)

Vampirism's epidemiology is complex: after you've been bitten once, you go through a 12-week period of intense craving for human blood. If you resist, the infection burns itself out and you are back to normal.

Individuals can and will try their hand at social engineering. They'll do this by asking businesses or groups for more information on a target. It's accomplished through the claim of being someone they're not or through asking questions. The word comes from ‘document tracing,’ which has a past in web 1.0. Regardless, doxing's a neutral act that is free of political and moral responsibilities. It's used by many groups and individuals that range in religious and political beliefs. So, the person committing the act is the one that places politics or morals onto it. The target can range from possible racists or sexists to an innocent person or a victim of some scheme. Remember: Anyone can become a target and victim of doxing. The truth is that no one is un-dox-able. It’s speculated this is the end result of mob justice and social justice on the internet. Doxing is just something that won't go away. And just like its rise to infamy in the early 2000s, it'll always have its ups and downs. It's filled with immature individuals void of any real emotional or mental maturity. Just like in middle school, and some higher education, gossip is common. People will use your past against you. They’ll work on every tiny flaw and mistake to isolate you from others. And, like a lion singling out an ill gazelle from the herd, some people are quite opportunistic. Though, we’ll note that’s where the similarities end. People online, at large, have no means of coping with opinions or views that don’t match to their own. They’re so afraid of something of theirs being spoken badly of, that they seek to silence. Doxing is currently the most common form for silencing this supposed dissent. It's used to shame, blame and emotionally or mentally scar someone into censoring themselves. This self policing on tone and content isn’t something that many will see as a reason to prevent dox. Many will see it as a nuisance that’ll not happen to them. Why would anyone target you, right? You don’t matter, right? You’re right. You don’t matter. You’re just another pseudo-anonymous individual. That’s why it matters, too, though. By being online, you’re already a target for doxing. You frequent social media, the threats doubled. If you dare speak your mind, entire legions of perpetually angry individuals see you. They’re mad at you for existing. They’re mad at you for simply being an individual with their own views and voice. You said something they deemed bad. Maybe it's a "Micro-aggression" or wrong think. Either way, you are just another bump in the road for them. They're on an endless jihad to wipe out anything that might "trigger" them. They don’t care about you, either. Your family and friends will be targets, too. They’ll lay in wait until you’re at your highest or lowest. It doesn’t matter to them; they just want to make you into an example for stepping out of line. The line will shift and change constantly, yet it matters not to them. They want to ruin you and yours. Your job will be on the line. Human Resources will be harassed continuously with emails and phone calls. Your employer will wake up to their own social media accounts blasted with comments. And, again, you aren’t truly the target but what they perceive you as representing. It could be anything, honestly. But, you should still worry nonetheless. We may have stated in “The History of Dox” that doxing is a neutral act—and it is—but it’s being weaponized. Why You Should Fear Doxing Many believe doxing is something not to worry about. These people believe that by not posting their names, they're safe. It’s just not that easy anymore as we’re no longer a part of Web 1.0. We’re in more danger than ever before when it comes to our privacy. This is due to the interconnectivity of Web 2.0. You've things like tracking cookies, which is common knowledge. But how many users are aware of Facebook spying on its userbase and non-users alike? What about the fact that Google and its services are connected? The average users shouldn’t worry about the above, though. What will affect the average user is cat-fishing. Cat-fishing, in some ways, is like doxing and identity theft. You use someone else's information and identity to masquerade as that individual. You then, as this individual, take part in what many refer to as a "romance scam". This can be to try and stalk someone, milk them of their money, or to gain trust to commit a more atrocious act. Cat-fishing, although like doxing, isn't actually doxing nor the biggest possible threat. Doxing to many is just [1] pizza boxing and flooding a mailbox with [2] literal junk. There are also prank calls, theft of mail and many other acts that can, to some degrees, become worse. The issue isn’t that some use doxing a means to gather information for identity theft. It isn't just ruining your credit or stealing your money, either. There are some individuals out there who'll use doxing as a form of abuse. They prefer instant gratification and "karma culture" instead of personal responsibility. Their calls for government transparency were nothing but a forced meme. We regurgitate the catchphrases and trends force fed to us on news feeds and dashboards. We wallow in instant gratification and the infinite supply of praise we can get from the internet.  All this has done for us is made us blunt to the concept of having some dignity. We air out our business to any and all who listen in the name of acceptance and progressiveness. What we’re doing is making ourselves ignorant to the fact that our privacy is dying. Without privacy, there is no security. Why do we need privacy? Why is it important? The concept originates from the military when handling "classified information" and intelligence applications. The basis is that if fewer people know the details, the less likely a mission or task will be jeopardized and be risked. This helps limit the chance that data could be compromised or fall into the hands of enemies. This also explains the varying levels of clearance within organizations, like "TOP SECRET" or the highly restricted "TOP SECRET ULTRA". Like a well-oiled military machine, one must treat their online life like a separate entity that's in no way, shape or form, related to their offline life. This is to prevent cross contamination of accounts and information. One such example of compartmentalization in cyber security, for the average internet user, is never using the same username or e-mail address for an account. Another example would be purchasing a subscription to a good, secure VPN to prevent your own IP and ISP from being detect. One other example is the use of add-ons to sanitize your referral links and randomizing browser's user agent. In the end, the best practice is to treat each and every account as a separate entity isolated from your other accounts. A new e-mail address, username, persona and style of typing will be needed for each and every account you create to prevent possible cross contamination. Please remember these simple steps when creating your accounts: • A different username • A different e-mail address • A different password • Always ensure you never use real world information • Always ensure your avatar and/or signature is of an image you've used nowhere else • Where you can, use a P.O. Box • Where you can, use a pre-paid card instead of your credit or debit • Where you can, use a burner phone (pre pair cell) instead of your landline or cell number • Use a word processor to double check your written content before posting • Try to limit the use of words you most commonly use • Try to limit your account's profile in what information you provide • Try to limit your overall account count to 10 or less • Never link accounts to each other • Never publicly post e-mail addresses or passwords • Never share or link your chat, instant messenger or social media accounts to people you don't trust • Never use your real name, nor should you ever post your real world information ==============================================================

There are many reasons for this, such as the alarming growth of social networks. It's obvious the need for privacy is in increasing demand, but the biggest setback for privacy is you. All those accounts you made in your early internet years? They have most likely left a nice trail that many can follow and use to learn about you. You see, it’s true; everything on the internet lasts. Unlike now, we weren’t taught to be as privacy-minded.  Governments and corporations are fighting to wave privacy off as a paranoid's fantasy. Many privacy groups exist and claim to fight for your rights against the invasion of privacy. But how many actually do help? Many are in bed with corporations and/or the government. We just want to spread knowledge. We believe your various accounts should be like any good camp fire: Well planned. You need to not only think it out but, also plan it out and have an emergency plan in case is spreads too far, too fast. Plus it doesn't hurt to have a plan to extinguish it. Your online profiles and accounts shouldn’t just rot. They need to be removed and all traces proving its existence also doused out. Like any good Woodsman or woman will tell you: A single campfire can destroy a forest. This is why you must always plan your accounts and profiles out. Like a campfire left alone in a forest, a single account or profile can destroy an entire life. Any one account and/or profile can decimate an entire person’s image. Yes, in theory, everything will remain cached, copied or saved on some server till the end of days. And you may think that just deleting an account will wipe all traces of it, but that isn’t the truth. Everything, even after deleting an account, is still there. By law, most sites and services have to keep everything on their servers for a few months to a year or more. So, in a sense, you can never delete an account, hence us saying you need to think. There are services for doing background checks on everyone and everything for any reasons. You have an online footprint and anyone can find it, there’s nothing else to say. You have a digital trail dedicated to all your old fanfics, photos or images and online debates. There are steps that you can take to prevent your online footprint from growing. But nothing short of doxing yourself ([1] self doxing) and learning just how much of your information is online can help. One issue is how you interact with others online. Another issue is how much information you post on the internet. All we can do is give you some simple suggestions before providing you the tools needed to self-dox. Many will say you can't stop the government or corporations from spying. But corporations or government aren't out to ruin your life or financial security. The people you have to worry about getting a hold of this information are civilians. They'll contact employers, family and friends all under the guise of social justice. With the right combination of information, they can guess passwords and security questions. They can even discover information you don’t have on the internet with the proper combo. The below contains some simplified descriptions of why each piece of information is useful. Name: Even if common, a person’s name (first and/or last) can help verify information. It can lead to more private information found through Google and other services. Age: Like their name, their age can confirm certain information. Birth date: Used to verify age and name, plus other information. Location: A general location, like a city or state, can help locate an address. It can confirm their identity on social networking sites and application sites (among others). Phone number: Verify name and location Home address: What else to say? The home address can usually turn up images and misc information through Google. Possible relations: Mother, father, brother, sister, boyfriend, girlfriend, friends…ETC. This can confirm other pieces of information. Usernames: Using the same username over and over again can create a trail. By leaving one and telling others where you’re going, you can create a trail, too. E-mail addresses: A key to tracking people down, the e-mail address leads to many things. Accounts: Links to accounts found on various websites, used to keep a list of where you’ve been. Websites: Most likely has information you don’t realize. Information can be found through a "whois" (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WHOIS) search Misc information: Miscellaneous pieces of information that may seem crucial or of interest. For example: Mac Address, IP address, IDs, SSN, birth certificates...ETC. Possible accounts: Similar username or other items that makes you believe an account's related. Images: Can verify accounts; find Exif data…ETC. Make two dossiers. One with the information you know and recall, then a second one with the information that you've found online through the use of this guide. Keep the two separate once done. It's the key to ruining someone, no matter how liked they are online. Knowing what someone said or did in the past will help ruin their present self. Now, before you start, put yourself into the shoes of a stranger. You should think back to previous scenarios or cases where you’ve heard of doxing. The reason I ask this is simple: To see just how varied doxing can be and just how unethical it can get at times. Think of it like this: Someone you’ve argued with. Think of someone who wished nothing short of a pox upon your genitals or the death of your dog. This person has decided to track every piece of information possible on you that exist online. This hatred is what usually drives people onward toward their goal of doxing. They need to find information on someone and put them in their place. Or it’s because they believe it’s their moral right to track down those who wander away from the hive mind. Once you get into this frame of mind, don’t think of the information you know, but search for what you don't. Search for items posted in the present and past. You must find this information and use it. Add it to your dossier. You'll get a glimpse of what others see when they comb through your blog and internet past. It’s a mess of tactics, resources, and Googling until one’s fingers are raw from typing. Because of this, we’ve created a series of simple tactics for you to track down your information online. We also wish to show you how to counteract these tactics. We’re going to start with a simple tactic and lead onwards from there. ==Applies to Tumblr only== > About me leads to about you: Simple and fast, always the first thing you should do. Look at the about me, see what information is there? A name? An age? What about nicknames, or links, or a list of tags or posts…? Whatever there is, it leads to valuable information that can pad out the dossier. Counteract: Never use your real name online, nicknames, or anything of value. This should apply to any and all accounts you own. > Tumblr cataloging: This is simple, in all actuality, as it only requires time and patience, and lots of reading. To start out, one goes to the target blog. Then you comb through the /archive/ link or by finding the last page of a blog. In theory, you need to find the oldest/first post made on the blog. From there, working your way up to most current, you go from page-to-page. You skim posts for key pieces of information that can be used to find information elsewhere or used in any Search Engine. Things you'll look for: • Exif data from images • Linked image albums • Alternate blog or account links • E-mail addresses • Wish lists • Personal rants • Family or pet names • Real life locations or school names The older the blog, the more likely there are pieces of information used to find their accounts elsewhere online. Counteract: Simply put—don’t be ignorant or rash. Think, watch what you post, don’t leak real world information, save images as PNG and always scrub the Exif data. Be careful and post smart. > Tag hunt: The trend of having to tag every post caused people to be obsessive with certain tags. To profit from this, one has to check for a “Tag list,” or commonly used tags like “My face” or “Me”. Depending on whether Tumblr pulled an Imgur and removes Exif data, images can lead to real world information. Certain tags can end up leading to accounts and personal information. These can accounts are found through simple reverse image searches. Counteract: Post smart, save images as PNG and always scrub Exif data. Be general and misleading about thing in reality (when discussing online). Swap real names for generic names or handles—High school is now your High school, not Mt. Rush High. > Tag search: Search the blog’s username and/or title on Tumblr search and Tumblr’s tag search. You can also search previous or past usernames/titles. You can find a lot out on a blogger and who they hang out with by searching them on Tumblr. If they have a previous blog name/title, it can be found by using the “Tumblr cataloging” tactic. Example: 1. Party H re-blogged and responded to Party B. 2. The post Party B re-blogged was from Party A. The post from Party A is on Party H’s blog. 3. Party H is the “Source,” but older posts show it re-blogged from Party A. 4. This means Party H and Party A was one in the same and Party H changed the name/title. Searching their previous names/titles on Tumblr can and will usually lead to excellent information. Remember though, you’ll need patience and to take some time going through these tags. Counteract: Don’t change your title/name, or do so often. > Statcounter surfing: Use a publicly displayed counter or your own to track someone’s IP down and blog(s). To do this: Check for a Statcounter or tracker made public, or use your own and bait the target. Now look at what information is displayed and/or look for /blog/username links. Use these to find meta data like: • Blogs • IP address • General location (ISP or host’s location) • Referral information Counteract:  Many add-ons help prevent this, like Umatrix or Ublock Origin. Always use one or more of these add-ons. You’ve done all that you’ve could on Tumblr; you’ve gotten some information… now what? Well, it’s time to breakout Google or some other search engine. Now start using various combinations of the information that you’ve found. ==General information and searching== > Username searching: Search the Username using a search engine or one of several username check websites. Just find any and all accounts with a similar username. You then check its information against that in the dossier. Counteract: Never use the same username twice. Always change it, no matter what. Never share your accounts with anyone or announce your accounts elsewhere. Never inter-link accounts. > E-mail address surfing:  Using any number of websites or search engines, one can enter an email address to lookup. Using its variations (@gmail, hotmail, yahoo…ETC) you can find miscellaneous accounts. This can also lead to information and possible dead-accounts or addresses. You could use an address and resurrect it anew to claim accounts to learn information like passwords. Counteract: Use a different E-mail address for each account. Having a “Main” that acts as the secondary account for the others one. Don’t display your E-mail. Never give it out, or at least use a secondary-secondary as a fake for public display. > Account hopping: The older an account, the more likely it will link to another account somewhere else. Like a few of the Tumblr tactics, one just has to search tags, keywords, and comb through the accounts. Usually it’s a comment or even a keyword itself. Better success on Wordpress or Blogger accounts, also in descriptions on profiles. Counteract: Always wait a month before deleting an account. Remove any and all posts, texts, and information. Before deleting the text or posts, first fill them with random characters/text. This is to force a new cache from various search engine and services. This should render previous ones inaccessible and only leave traces of nothing. Example: Instead of a lengthy diatribe against your old SO, it’s sldknlskndlfkndlkslfksldkfndslksdnflksklnfdslkfsdnklds). Also, for images or videos, upload blank images or static filled videos. > Photobucket jumping: Just searching usernames against account links like ‘photobucket.com/user/-username-‘ or ‘photobucket.com/profile/-username-‘ to find an account. Once an account is discovered, people can search parts or the whole URL of any direct image link. This allows people to find where you’ve posted your images and thus your accounts. Counteract: Delete your images and photobucket account. Don’t put a password on it and don’t let it idle…it’ll lasts forever. > CTRL + U sourcing it: Check custom layouts on various blogging platforms for websites and links. Various sites allow individuals to add their own custom flair to things.  For example a layout and separate page designs. You can find links to storage accounts or image upload services by checking the source. This usually leads to photobucket accounts, imageshack accounts or personal servers. It could also expose a cloud storage account that can be searched or forced into exposing more information. Counteract: Use the month rule and random text/character trick before deletion. You should also name all images randomly instead of using actual words. Don’t put anything in obvious order. Note on passwords:  8 to 12 characters long with random letters, numbers and characters. > Forum scouting: Found an account on a forum; search the forum for more information. Most forums have a search function that allows you to search a username plus keywords. It’s simple and quick. Search specific things like: • Social network names • Usernames • E-mails • General keywords (example: email, account, art, location, school) Double check posts for signatures or avatars that can be traced back to other accounts. If that isn’t possible, then check the user’s profile for a post counter that may or may not be clickable. This will usually lead to all their posts. Counteract: One month wait before delete plus random characters. Also request the owner/mods/staff to delete account and all posts. > Gaia Whoring: Go to their forums and search them, or profiles for similar usernames and information. Check against a search engine with things like “Username,” “Gaia,” “E-mail” and whatever else. This usually leads to various forums and other accounts. Find your Digital Foot print--Things you should know and do This chapter is dedicated to providing you with various steps that you can take to prevent cross-referencing through multiple accounts. A single piece of information posted in one location can be used against you and lead to another account. If not taken into careful consideration, something as simple as your first name could lead to your inevitable doxing. Imagine, if you will, that you have an account on a site about model trains. You signed up with your first name and used your old AOL e-mail address. Someone looking for you discovers you like trains; however all they have on you is an old username. They search this username, which is used in your old AOL e-mail address. They discover your model train account and first name. Search with various variations of your e-mail address and name, they discover a newsletter of your town’s local hobby shop and model train group. They now know your full name, your hobby group, your old e-mail address and several other pieces of information that, when combined, lead to your home address. Congratulations, you’ve been doxed. When leaving an account: o When leaving, don’t announce it. o Tell no one that you’re deleting your account. o Delete your account only after a month of inactivity. And delete it only after switching it to a *‘Dead E-mail address’. • Note: An e-mail address used to take ownership of an account that you’re deleting/deactivating. Steps to take before deleting an account: o Before deleting anything, wait a month. o Anything you can edit, do so with random characters and text. o Image should be replaced with a blank temp image (pure color image). o Once a month is over, you can delete that account. o But before doing so, delete the account’s items one by one. o If you can’t delete something, ask the staff/owner/webmaster/mods to delete it for you. o Stating that someone is stalking you is usually enough to remove the information. o If they won’t remove, try to edit it once again with random text. o If you can’t edit it, ignore it. o If it’s a blog, change titles and/or usernames. o Preserve the original URL or username on a blank blog. o Never leave your old username or URL up for grabs. On removing an old E-mail address: o Never delete an e-mail address, simply switch accounts and other items accordingly. o Mark everything else in it as spam, but only if you can’t unsubscribe. o Log into it at least once a month to prevent deletion. o You can, most likely, delete it, after not using it, around a year or two later. o Always make sure the e-mail is no longer tied to any accounts or personal information. o Always wipe it out like any other account by changing as much as possible to randomized text. On account maintenance: o Never use your real name. o Never upload an image of yourself. o Never use your real location. o Never discuss your time zone. o Never discuss your current time. o Always use English, at all times. o Never discuss events happening in your area. o Never mention race or skin color. o Never mention religion. o Never mention sexuality. o Never discuss your hobbies in great detail. o Don’t talk about your fetishes or kinks. o Accounts shouldn’t be cross-linked through various accounts/sites. o If you do, make sure no username is the same. o And make sure no e-mail address displayed is the same. o Use a different e-mail address for each account. o Keep accounts separate if not needed to be linked. o Never link RP accounts to other accounts and social networking profiles o Don’t mention how many pets you have or their names. o The same applies to family members, neighbors, friends, and significant others. o Scrape as much information off of something as possible. o Boil it all down to the core basics. o Never keep an account longer than a year (some exceptions apply). On talking to strangers: o Never display your messenger, Skype or chat names anywhere online. o Give it to others only if they ask you. o Keep all forms of instant messaging and chat private. o Don’t save logs. o Only give out to trusted individuals. o This applies to IRC channels and chat setups. o Lock down as much as possible. o Never use real names or information, ever. o Don’t tell other people who you talk to online. o Never place your full name on Skype. o Limit the profile you have on Skype. o Make sure all Skype options are set to private. o If it can’t be set to private, then set to contacts. o Like Skype, any chat client or instant messenger should be locked down. On behavior: o You’ll most likely have to change the way you behave online. o Sharing interests is fine, but getting too obsessed is bad. o Never admit to liking any specific thing o This can help people tie other accounts to you. o Admitting to things, like, your favorite food can be used to trace too. o In general, you need to keep yourself and your information limited when on the Internet. o Instead of admitting to liking a song, just say you like the band. o This applies specific bands in a genre. o Or any form of entertainment that you specifically like. o Instead of specific parts you like in a game, you just like the game. o Remember: don’t talk about your location. o Don’t talk about your general location in detail. o Don’t mention what it’s known for (produce, exports, colleges, universities…etc). o Don’t make mention of recent weather, as that can be used in junction with other information o Don’t say the exact time. o Be wary of saying exactly what the temperature is. o If the person you’re talking to uses Celsius, then tell the temp in Celsius. o If the person you’re talking to uses Fahrenheit, then tell the temp in Fahrenheit. o Don’t make mention of general information like school names or street names. o Don't make mention eateries/restaurants as they can be unique to your location only. o Always refer to your city/town as a college town. o Never post selfies. o Never post nudes. o Never post porn. o Never post erotica. When getting personal: o Don’t discuss siblings or family members to great extent. o Don’t drop pet names. o Don’t drop the name of anyone related to you. o Don’t drop the name of friends. o Don’t drop the name of politicians. o Don’t drop the names of people you’ve had relationships with. o Keep age to a general rounded number, like, the 20s…etc o Keep personal descriptions down. o Keep weight to a more general descriptor (overweight, obese…etc). On talking about life experiences: o Never do so in the first place. o If you do, don’t let incriminating evidence be traced back to you. o Or at least make sure you can discuss such things in a secure environment. o Also don’t attach anything about you to your online personas and/or accounts. On using custom domains: o Ask your host about Whois masking. o If they don’t offer it, check into other services. On online relationships: o Don’t do online dating. o Don’t sext. o Don’t cyber. o Don’t do erotic roleplay. o Don’t go to online dating websites. o Don’t take part in relationship, dating, sex…etc help sites/forums/chats. This also hinders people and will push some off of harassing you. Fourth: Never answer the phone for anyone you don’t recognize. Names and phone numbers should always be scrutinized before picking up and answering. If it’s important, they’ll leave a voicemail. Yes, some people will leave harassing messages, too. If you don’t respond or make mention of these messages, no one will known. This will prevent people from getting the satisfaction of knowing they’re getting to you. Fifth: If you’ve the money and time, change your phone number to a new, private and unlisted one. Sixth: Get your mail ASAP. The longer you leave your mail in the mailbox, the sooner someone may snap it up for nefarious means. Always get your mail. Seventh: Don’t open letters or packages you don’t recognize. If you didn’t order or request something in the mail, don’t risk it. If you suspect something, open all packages and letters over a plastic container large enough to house the item you suspect. While wearing gloves, eye protection and a face mask, ensure the item is being openly as carefully as possible. Record and save everything in case of issue. Eight: Look over this PDF, as it provides pertinent information on how to remove your data footprint. Finally, get off the blogs and stop saying things online. Some sites, though, offer an easier route to take to expunge your information for simply being related to someone who’s classed as a law officer, military personnel or a government employee. If anything a global pandemic has taught us, is the importance of engaging with our staff, especially remote employees.
A pandemic certainly changes the way we work, but it shouldn’t change prioritizing the employee experience and maintaining relationships with them. It just might look different.
In this “new normal,” stress and mental health have been more emphasized than ever. Health, daycare, social interactions, schooling, fear mongering, conspiracy theories, safety precautions, societal pressures… there is a LOT going on right now that will impact focus, productivity and priorities.
Annette Franz put a great article together in collaboration with the CXpert website called Five Tips to Engage Remote Staff during Lockdown. In it, she highlights five areas: maintaining culture; communication; feedback; tools and resources; and autonomy and empowerment. I couldn’t agree more with her suggestions. To further support that focus,  I wanted to share some things that we’ve done at work that has really helped.
My Experience in Keeping Remote Employees Engaged
Communicate, communicate and communicate – expectations, concerns, direction, timelines, encouragement… all the things you’re supposed to do even when you’re not remote are even more important when you’re no longer working in the same space. Remote employees can’t just pop in to talk about projects, they only have communication channels to rely on. Make sure you are almost over communicating as a way to create an environment with little confusion.
Allow for some time to be social – set a time for them to be themselves, either in daily stand-ups, weekly get togethers or a dedicated group chat. That casual camaraderie “water cooler” time is no longer a possibility so allow for it during the course of your day. It reinforces that your team is a team, filled with humans who need to connect with one another.
Be a good, caring human – show interest, empathy and compassion… ask your team how they are doing, and mean it. Ask how their family is doing during this stressful time. How their kids are handling new restrictions at school. How isolation is impacting them. Everyone is going through a different experience, full of the unknown and unfamiliar. Fear, unease and anxiety are common during the pandemic so it’s important that everyone shows support for their experience. Not everyone will want to share openly and that’s fine. But they should still feel like their experience matters. As well, share how the pandemic is impacting you personally. This is new and odd for everyone, you’re no different.
Don’t ignore the pandemic – include topics about how COVID-19 is impacting you and your team that is out side of work duties and responsibilities. The latest information that impacts individuals and your organization. Without betraying privacy, make sure your team is up to date on current information.
Bring the organization to them – highlight other areas of the organization to give a sense of togetherness. Whether it’s a podcast or an employee newsletter, use creative platforms to make your organization a little “smaller” and intimate by sharing stories and experiences. Even if your business is extremely siloed in work or geography, stories of success, challenges and experience with a human face/voice can reinforce a sense of community.
Accessibility – be there for each other when anyone wants to talk. Whether it’s any member of the team, make sure you make time for those that need it, even if it is something they may not usually “bother” you with. That connection to others is sometimes just the right amount of assurance needed to get you through the day.

I reached out to my own network to understand some steps their organization took to help keep them, as remote employees, engaged. I asked:

“Required all meetings to be on camera so we can actually see each other regularly.”
“[My supervisor] was really thoughtful about engagement for people working remotely even before the pandemic – a skill thats invaluable now. Plus, he’s really understanding of people’s individual circumstances, of which there are many (people trying to manage childcare, people worried about elderly relatives…).”
“[My supervisor] sends us thank you gift cards which is really, really nice, as well as frequent communication, team calls, etc. [Our organization] hosts “Fridays at 4″ – giant super casual WebEx calls with trivia, scavenger hunts. etc. Everyone joins in from the president on down. Our president has shown fabulous leadership, sending  a weekly email that’s really authentic and encourages positivity in tough times, sharing his own weekly COVID experiences (Netflix picks, hobbies and haircuts to show he’s passing the time). It’s been comforting to see this side and yet know they are working tirelessly to be strategic and meet the challenges we have been handed.”
“I worked when our hospital had a COVID outbreak. It was a very long and scary 50-ish days. Everything changed with regard to how we were expected to provide patient care. Our manager held daily “huddles” and was very transparent with policies and stats. She did draws for a few $5 Starbucks cards . And we each said one thing we were thankful for, or told a corny ‘dad’ joke at the start of each huddle. It kept morale up. Oh… and she arranged four times for the COVID testers to come to us! It was so much easier as testing became mandatory.”
“Been up front about how things are. And stayed optimistic. Not foolishly so. But kept the mood up.”
If anything I’ve experienced or been told about, it’s the personal touches that have had the greatest impact. When employees are treated as living, breathing, caring people, not metrics or a means to an end, the engagement is always more meaningful and impactful.

Funny How The Second Amendment Is Absolute And All-Encompassing, But The Fourteenth Amendment Can Be Basically Line-Item Vetoed

As I was driving through Mississippi on Devil’s Night, Maureen Corrigan’s book review of Let the People See The Emmett Till Story, by Elliott Gorn, broadcasted over the local National Public Radio (NPR) station. It was a haunting reminder of the legacies we have all inherited. As I was passing through Mississippi’s endless-night horizon, Corrigan’s bone-chilling narrative bled through my car speakers:
‘Let the people see what they did to my boy.’ Those were the words spoken by Emmet Till’s mother, Mamie Till-Mobley, after viewing the brutalized body of her son.
During his night of torture near the Delta town of Money, Mississippi, 14-year-old Till’s right eye had been dislodged from its socket, his tongue choked out of his mouth, the back of his skull crushed and his head penetrated by a bullet.
Shortly after Corrigan’s Fresh Air segment, NPR commentators and their guests spoke about the Tree of Life synagogue massacre, yet another act of domestic terrorism in a seemingly endless string of mass shootings our country has witnessed this decade. With a sense of foreboding, the on-air commentators and their guests were not only concerned about Robert Bowers’s 11 executions via his AR-15 rifle and three handguns on October 27, but the broader, recent rise and empowerment of white nationalism throughout our country.
In 2015, prior to the most recent presidential election, I warned:
Maybe it’s hard for me to stomach the recently renewed attack on the Citizenship Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment because I fear the root cause of these sentiments. As Mark Twain supposedly said, ‘History may not repeat itself, but it does rhyme.’
The strong anti-foreigner feelings of past generations are being revived as a rationale to make our country great again. At what cost?
I fear America’s deep legacy of anti-Asian racism will continue to haunt our future generations. Now the anti-immigrant rhetoric — of ‘sanctuary cities,’ ‘border walls,’ and ‘anchor babies’ — is bringing xenophobia to the front of our country’s consciousness once again.
In the seminal Citizenship Clause case involving Wong Kim Ark, the Supreme Court stated: ‘We are entirely ready to accept the provision proposed in the constitutional amendment, that the children born here of Mongolian parents shall be declared by the Constitution of the United States to be entitled to civil rights and to equal protection before the law with others.’
Back then, some politicians argued that the Chinese were so different in so many ways that they could never assimilate into American culture, and they represented a threat to the country’s principles and institutions.
Just last year, I documented the harrowing death of Aylan Kurdi and the refugee crisis:
Since the conflict in Syria began in 2011, until the photography date of Aylan Kurdi’s [three-year old] lifeless body, the United States had taken in only about 1,500 Syrian refugees. That is not a typo: 1,500 Syrian refugees total. When Obama raised the Syrian ceiling to 10,000 — a more reasonable number I suppose, but still an unbearably low moral figure, he faced a massive outcry from conservatives. Last week, many politicians paid tribute to Holocaust Memorial Day and the millions of innocent lives lost, and these politicians pledged, ‘Never again.’ Yet they turn a blind-eye to our current refugee crisis….
Whereas Canada has accepted almost 40,000 refugees to much celebration by its citizens, Obama’s 10,000 target has now become, under Donald Trump, a complete and total shutdown of Syrian and Muslim refugees.
The current refugee crisis is the issue of our lifetime and we have met it with little to no fanfare. America was once viewed as a beacon of hope. Lady Liberty represented freedom and opportunity. But now we have plans to build a much vaunted wall while we permit our most at-risk communities to drown in lead-contaminated water.
We pledge to never let millions of innocent lives suffer again or deprive our communities of their most basic needs. But how easily we forget. Humanity washed along the shore, and we walked by. We are witnessing so many refugee hands reach out, but we refrain from reaching back. For the first time in my life, I don’t recognize this country.
Shortly after Kurdi’s death, his relatives were admitted into Canada as refugees. At least, in Canada, Aylan Kurdi did not die in vain.
Now, with only days until the midterms, the Trump administration is continuing to amplify its dog-whistle propaganda campaign on immigration and crime, to dehumanize migrants and others and arrest asylum seekers. Meanwhile, acts of domestic terrorism receive much less consternation. For too many of our country’s leaders, it’s always “too early to talk about gun control regulation” and “too soon to react, politically or otherwise, to the latest mass murder.”
They deem the Second Amendment to be absolute and interpret its words — “[a] well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed” — to mean that citizens have every right to tote around AR-15s. Surely many would protest, one hand on the heart and the other hand’s finger on a trigger, if any president declared he alone could change this interpretation and the law with an executive order.
Yet the Fourteenth Amendment is much less sacred to those same people who pledge such loyalty to the Constitution. Its words — “[a]ll persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the state wherein they reside” — have been interpreted the same way for the past 150 years. With one fell swoop of the pen, Trump believes he alone can change this. And so do many of his loyal followers.
This would be funny, if it weren’t so sad… and scary as hell.
My ATL colleague Elie Mystal opined on the subject recently in his column Post Runs White Nationalist Propaganda Masquerading As Law-Talkin’:
WHERE IS THE MISINTERPRETATION? These white assholes keep saying that we’re misreading the Fourteenth Amendment. HOW? The writers of the Fourteenth Amendment wanted to do a thing. They did it in the only way they could. THEY WROTE IT DOWN. Where’s the freaking confusion?
If you pin one of these jerks down, they’ll start talking about Native Americans. The Fourteenth Amendment didn’t confer citizenship to Native Americans, who were clearly born here, and thus, they argue, citizenship wasn’t meant to be a birthright. I have little patience for people who use our racism towards the First Americans to justify racism towards New Americans, but there you go. If you think that our treatments towards Native Americans was a feature instead of a bug, that’s your argument.

In June, for World Refugee Day, I wrote about the harrowing historical acts of the current administration:
We are directly violating Article 31 of the Refugee Convention. Instead of addressing this issue, the Trump administration is aiming to amplify its wanton and reckless ignorance of historical precedent. The Department of Justice now plans to send Judge Advocate General’s Corps (JAG) Officers to our southern border to prosecute migrants. Maybe this administration should do better to understand the rule of law before it deploys JAG Officers, who specialize in military justice and military law, to interpret and enforce immigration laws.
The vaunted wall that the Trump administration so desperately plots to build is already being constructed brick by brick. Even if we refuse to admit it to ourselves. A separation of families’ strategy was executed on our borders, while the separation of society continues to happen within them.
Our country’s withdrawal from the United Nations Human Rights Council isn’t a bug, it’s a feature of the current administration. I’ve spoken to so many others who also feel within and without. When did we get here… while America slept?
The United States Constitution may be color blind, but our leaders certainly are not. The vast majority of the murders in our country are done with the accomplice of the Second Amendment, not the Fourteenth Amendment.
If we’re talking about how we have misinterpreted an amendment the wrong way for quite some time, let’s focus on the one that has been such a god-awful enabler of mass murders in our country.
People can talk all day about their Second Amendment rights, but we need to begin the discussion about our responsibilities. How many more mass shootings in schools, synagogues, and churches can we endure before we accept some responsibility?
