Moth of the Week

White-Lined Sphinx

Hyles lineata

The white-lined sphinx is a part of the family Sphingidae. They are sometimes known as the hummingbird moth because of their size and how they hover over flowers for nectar. The were first described in 1775 by Johan Christian Fabricius as Sphinx lineata.

Description The forewings are dark brown with tan stripe cutting across mirrors on both sides. The veins of the forewings are lined in white. The top edge of the forewing or the “costal margin” is outlined in a light brown and the forewing’s side edge or the “outer margin” is lined in gray. The hindwings are black with a pink stripe called the “median band.” The furry body is also dark and light brown with black, pink, and white stripes and spots.

Wingspan Range: ≈5.1 - 7.6 cm (2 -3 in)

Diet and Habitat Caterpillars of this species eat a variety of plants such as: Willow weed (Epilobium), Four o'clock (Mirabilis), Apple (Malus), Evening primrose (Oenothera), Elm (Ulmus), Grape (Vitis), and more. Caterpillars can form large groups when finding food and damage many gardens and crops.

Adult moths drink the nectar from various flowers such as: Columbines, Larkspurs, Four o'clock (Mirabilis), Petunia, Honeysuckle, Moonvine, and more. The type of flower an adult feeds from depends on the visibility during certain times of the day. At night they will feed from white flowers because they are easier to see in the dark. Durning the day, they will feed on brighter flowers.

This moth has a large range spanning from Southern Canada down to Central America, going through Mexico and most of the United States. They are found occasionally in the West Indies and on even rarer occasions in Eurasia and Africa. They live in habitats such as deserts, gardens, suburbs, and the Mountains of Colorado. However their population varies in many places.

Mating This moth has two generations per year with more in warmer climates. Eggs are laid in the spring on the host plants. A female can lay hundreds of eggs, which overwinter as larvae and emerge in February to November. This is also when they begin eating.

Predators This moth prefers to fly at night but can be seen during the day. It is preyed on by common enemies of moths: birds and bats.

Fun Fact Caterpillars were, and still are in some places, eaten by Native Americans. They were skewered, roasted, and dried to store/ground. When compared to hamburger meat, the larvae have almost as much fat but 1/3 less saturated fat and more energy in calories, protein, carbohydrate, riboflavin, and niacin.

Describe your writing process from idea to posting/publishing.

So, I use to write in chronological order, which seriously seriously killed my ability to finish anything (I'm still trying to distance myself from this method), but then @highlordofkrypton posted about her method and I've been using 'dump documents' since and its slowly restoring my ability to stick to a project. So the revised version of my process is whenever I get an idea, I word vomit onto a 'dump document' until all the ideas, scenes, dynamics, quotes, vibes, images are physically on the document. Basically so they are out of my head and physically in front of me. Then I go through it, piecing things together and adding transitions and in-betweens until I have my first draft. Then I revise again and again until I get a final draft (I normally go through at least a second draft and sometimes a third draft). Then I post to the public! Sometimes, after I post I'll notice spelling mistakes or awkward sentence flow and I do end up making minor edits.

Are you a plotter or a pantser?

Oh, a plotter for sure. Sometimes I plot so much I get too burned out to actually write lol. But I like to plot because I feel like my endings are more satisfying when I know where they're going.

What do you listen to when you are writing?

Ambience, Lo-Fi or anything by Gibran Alcocer.

What’s your drink of choice(while writing)?

Green tea or water.

Promote yourself! What’s your favorite thing you’ve written?

Specifically, the nesta/tamlin drabble of my comforter drabble collection. It's the first official neslin I ever published and although I don't have more than two neslin published, I really really really love them as a ship and as individuals and writing them always makes me so happy. That drabble in particular developed into a much bigger idea that I'm currently working on, and it's just one of my favorite things I've ever created.

Share a fic of yours that you think is underrated/deserves more love.

Maybe moonvine? It's an au concept of feylin in which the Archerons are Dusk Court princesses and there's a peek into what feylin's relationship would look like if they were both High Fae and running in the same social circles.

Do you have any advice for new writers?

Post the thing. You never know how many people out there will adore your work if you never give it a try. Even if it gets zero notes, view, comments, you still accomplished the very difficult task of writing everything down and posting it. And you never know who will love it days, weeks, months, years from now.

What is a writing style/technique that others do really well that you'd like to get better at?

Characterization. I've read so many wonderful fics where the authors know how to write these ensemble casts of characters and simultaneously make each and every one of them unique in their voice, and I'm trying to teach myself how to do that.

Is there a character you were surprised you enjoyed writing as much as you did?

Oh, okay, so Rhysand. 👀 Nothing published yet, but I'm also writing him how I wish he were written. Like fully accepting he has to do shitty things to get the best results for everyone, and he owns up to it. It's fun. And the dialogue I can pull from him!! It's so so fun.

05 September 2023 - Monthly check-in (backyard)

Above: the back bed. The newest thing is the clematis blooming on top of the climbing rose trellis. I somehow forgot that its flowers were so tiny (bottom picture)! You can also see the rose has ignored the trellis and has sent a couple of branches off to the left directly in front of the wall basket.

Most everything else is continued blooms from previous check-ins. I can’t remember if the black-eyed Susans were blooming in August, so they may be new as well.

Side bed. The Joe Pye weed and sunflowers are drooping badly. I’ve given up trying to keep them upright. I’d have to go get more tall stakes and I’d rather save my gardening budget for the fall planting for my new bed space.

The lantana is thriving as usual in the late summer (top picture, orange flowers in the front center).

But most importantly!

Flower buds on the moonvine! (The twisty ones in the center - the one above them with the skinny leaves are the clematis getting ready for another bloom.)

The best fruits and vegetables that one could buy were known to come from the orchards and farms of Henbane-and-Begonia; however, being on a university student budget made Dahlia cut some corners. Angelus had assured her the orchards on the outskirts of Moonvine Hill are more than fine enough for the palate of drunk students but Dahlia was still apprehensive of visiting. Not that there was anything truly wrong with Moonvine Hill; it was a damn fine place to visit if you didn’t mind the smell of smoke and woodchips.

There was a big fat pumpkin with vines sprawling through the dirt of the pumpkin patch that caught Dahlia’s eye. It was twice as big as every other pumpkin in the garden and every one she’d looked at so far had been too small, too scrawny or not pumpkin-looking enough. “How about that one?”

“Only if you help pick it up!” Pof huffed.

“Oh. I guess it doesn’t look that great”.

Fallen leaves crackled under Poff’s feet as she stomped around in the dirt following Dahlia’s directions, her boots now caked in mud. Ivy had been the smart one by claiming guardianship of the wagon and only went where it was needed, but Poff was the muscle.

Shielding the glare of the late afternoon sun with her notebook, Dahlia looked over the garden once again and tapped her pen against her face.  “That one! That’s it!” She pointed to another pumpkin then crossed out the gourd from her to-do list. Without another word, she walked away leaving Poff and Ivy to untangle themselves, and the wagon, from the pumpkin patch on their own.

A small part of the Princess felt a twinge of pain, but it was there and gone within a single blink. Turned to nothing more than a fine mist you couldn't touch or see. She scoops her owlet into her arms, admiring both her and the flower with fond smile. She taps a finger to the tip of Octavia's beak before touching the milky petals of the flower.

❝ Ipomoea alba, also known as Moonflower and moonvine, among other names. They bloom only at night. It is an Earthly flower. We have some akin to it here as well. But here in my arms, I hold the most beautiful flower! ❞ Stolas slins twice, raising Octavia briefly with the motion before pulling her close once more.

Random Details

I have several fics floating around my head right now. So I figure I should share some details. Most of these are Dorym focused.

Windswept Moonvine Details: Dorian learns from his academic advisor that he needs ecology credits to graduate, so he takes a course about magical ecology. He ends up struggling in the class and having stress dreams, his professor recommends he find a tutor. Orym offers to help and now Dorian's stress dreams morph into dreams about falling in love with Orym. In this AU, Orym and Dorian are acquaintances until Orym starts tutoring Dorian.

Evil AU: Orym finds his thirst for vengeance takes over after losing Will and Derrig and even Keyleth can't help him. He becomes a notorious bounty hunter and runs across a quarry who manages to peak his interest. Dorian, in an attempt to help Cyrus, has gotten himself in trouble and found he doesn't dislike it. This is a very indulgent AU where it focuses on the idea of Dorym going bad and still falling in love.

We Can Only Be Who We Are: Widomauk AU where there is a new kingdom in Wildemount. The kingdom of Nightingale has stood strong for many years but now the queen is ill. Her son needs to promise his loyalty to the peace and the Dwendalian empire is concerned, sending in a spy, ambassador and a monk of the Cobalt Soul to investigate. Caleb becomes intrigued by the oddity of not only the kingdom, but also the prince who has been reported to have had a sudden personality change.

Dragon Age AUs: (I love the dragon age world, so this is very self-indulgent) It's still in the thought baby phase but I would love to make some AUs of my favorite ships (Dorym, Imodna, Widomauk, Vaxleth, Shadowgast, Beauyasha, etc.) that deal with Thedas and how they would fit in (example: Apostate Caleb and Tevinter Magister Essek)

I was very surprised to find Oddball was born with extra eyes..apparently its rare? I still have a lot to learn about flight rising.
