Lovely @winniethewife tagged me in a WIP Wednesday but I'm turning it into a 6ss because it's not Wednesday.

It's not that I haven't been writing, it's just that I've been chopping away at several things. So here's a sentence from each.

From Perfect Fit 3 (Nathan) Holding your gaze steadily, Nathan slowly reached for your arm, brushing his fingers along your skin. You flinched at first, horrified by the notion that he would reveal the machinery that lay beneath.

Mohamed Diab and Feige showed us Jake's suit in the episode six closing credits! I've lost the YouTube vid that pointed this out, but I've linked to the part of the credits where it's revealed.

Oh, look at that. They ended up in Strange's universe, and he really did restrain the other Watchers' powers. The other Watchers at least stopped fighting back and Uatu redeemed them with his words. Also, Peggy's dead, which okay, sure, why not.

We then get images of other characters of their What If scenarios that I wish we were able to see, but since this is the final season, we just get a tease, which is a bummer. There's six-armed Spider-Man drawn close to his 90's comic look, Samurai Ghost Rider, Riri Williams as the Punisher, Gamora in a torn wedding dress (I think?), a Moon Knight variant who I don't recognize, Weapon X Thanos (huh???), Iron Man Kingo, Ms Marvel Wasp, Hulk Steven Strange but he's still a sorcerer, Howard the Duck as the Scarlet Witch, Dragonborn Hawkeye, Silver Surfer Jubilee, Skrull Captain America, Sersi as a dancer (I think), Deadpool with a crapton of guns, Kid Hela with Mjolnir, Ten Rings Star Lord or Shang-Chi as Star Lord but still have the Ten Rings, gunslinger Loki, and a variant of Wanda. I would've been down to seeing some of those characters, but nope.

So, that it for What If, and yeah, I didn't like this finale. It felt rushed, more propping up of Captain Carter, and a tease of other variants that we'll never see. This stopped feeling like a What If show and became the Captain Carter and the Guardians of the Multiverse with Peggy as the main character. With how this went, they should've stopped at season one. Or they could've made this into one long season with the best What If episodes from the three seasons, add in some more What If episodes that we'd like to see that would've gone differently, then end it with the season one finale with that being the series finale.

But, yeah, this series fumbled a lot, but it's done now. The next animated show is Spider-Man in January, but my hopes are low after watching this show and the Spider-Man trailer.

Crazy that the show about Agatha Harkness (of all characters!) gets nine episodes when they could only give six each to Falcon and Winter Soldier, and to Moon Knight. Characters people actually were asking to see and that aren't Z-listers in the comics.

I hate these articles.

ScreenRant, GameRant, Comic Book Resources, and so many others just like them do absolutely nothing but spout nonsense and pretend that it's legitimate. Then, the few times they may actually have something to say that isn't garbage it's because the information was just stolen from someone else who bothered to sit down and do the research.

Seriously, I can't even tell you how many of these articles I've found that are so obviously stupid even in the context of what they're saying. This article talks about how Marc's trauma is from Randall's death (it was his mother's abusive reaction to it), Jake was a third personality that came out of nowhere for no reason other than shock value (he's from the comics, and there are several hints to his existence throughout the series), they complain about how not enough time was given to the emotional gut punch that was episode five in favor of the climactic final battle in episode six (I don't agree but I guess I'll allow it), and the final conclusion is that... it should have been a movie instead???

How the hell do you go from "the six episode series didn't have enough time to flesh itself out" to "this would have been so much better as a single movie" in the same sentence? Do you not see the contradiction? I don't know how long each episode is off the top of my head (and I'm too lazy to go look), but bingeing it beginning to end with my family took all day.

I'm stupid and feeling petty now. Instead of looking up the runtime, I'm gonna do some math.

Let's say Moon Knight was a movie. That would be, on average, an hour and a half to two hours long. Let's say two.

(Again, still not checking the actual runtimes cause I'm too lazy.) Let's say all six episodes are thirty minutes each. I know they're not, but let's say they are. Put together, that would be three hours long.

Let's say they're all an hour long, which feels more accurate to what they probably are for real. That's six hours long.

Let me ask again, HOW WOULD MOON KNIGHT BE BETTER OFF AS A MOVIE WITH A SHORTER RUNTIME IF YOU CAN'T STOP COMPLAINING THAT IT DIDN'T HAVE ENOUGH TIME AS IS???

In conclusion, I demand a second season. I also demand that these stupid ass clickbait articles die off as soon as possible.

Stray thoughts from rewatching Moon Knight (part 1)

All six episodes of MK s1 on my D+ profile are paused in random places mid-episode, from times when I was looking up a specific scene to double-check something for fic purposes. Not counting targeted canon-review moments, I might have only watched the whole show through twice? Figured I should get in another, for the sake of giving Disney that “hey, viewers like this, we should make more of it”…

Do any of you recall the Japanese live-action Spider-Man tv series (it’s a real hoot by the way, if you’re a Spidey fan and looking for a whacky good time, you can often find whole episodes on YouTube)? Well, reportedly, Moon Knight was also supposed to get the Japanese live-action treatment, but it never materialized. There were some promotional manga chapters published around 1979 but they’re allegedly notoriously hard to find in their entirety in anglophone internet circles so !!!! thank you once again for sharing this with me! It’s really an incredible find! And if anyone around here can read Japanese and would like to share, I’m always curious to see what this might say.

Back in November, I made a post playing with the idea of in-universe documentaries about Harrow and in that post I mentioned that there would probably be some discussion around the 'Mysterious stranger(s)' that appeared at (What I'm calling, anyway) The Battle of Cairo and (presumably) haven't shown up much sense...but I wanna extend on that. (Believe it or not, this idea came from an episode of the Big Hero Six Cartoon. Highly recommend it if you liked the movie, it's cute.) So, when I say Mysterious Stranger(s) I'm talking about both Marc and Steven as well as Layla. And we'll look at this from the 'The way social Media works' angle, not the documentary angle like I was with Harrow.

Marc and Steven go first - I'm going to assume, like multiple other folks who have come before me - that the general public probably assumes the two of them switching back and form is some magic superpower thing - at this point I'm pretty sure the only thing close to it that's been seen in the superhero world is Bruce/Hulk (Correct me if I'm wrong, please.) so that's why I'm gonna go down that route. I'm sure some folk would catch on to the DID angle the first time they see a video of it (I'm imagining a blurry as-all-hell video of that "That wasn't you, was it Steven?" scene and the one before it.) but I can't see it being a theory that gets up there in popularity quickly (Even though that's..the actual case.)

Layla is also being included in this - Does she get the name 'Scarlet Scarab' from Taweret? Herself? The Internet? What about obscuring her face? (For the most part, Marc and Steven have a mask on, but her face is never covered so-). I can guarantee the "Are you an Egyptian Superhero?" scene would make it onto the internet, at least. And we know fanfiction exists in this universe, so...how long does it take before people start shipping them? I'm dead serious- I can literally see the Tumblr (or whatever this universe's parallel is.) posts.

are you a show fan who's learned about how terrible the MCU did moon knight and you want to check out the comics? did you see him in a teamup book and want to know more about him? are you just looking for more comic recs? are you just interested in the character? then you're in the right place!

okay, to begin, i want to say that this is a character that has had a... varying history. there are no moon knight comics you can enjoy without extensive criticism. critisizing the things that you enjoy is good and gives you a better understanding of the work. please do not idolize any of these comics and please work to be kind to the many minorities (jewish people and systems, primarily, but classism, racism, xenophobia, and homophobia are all explored throughout MK's publishing history) that these comics represent. anyway.

MOON KNIGHT 1980 -

tws - doylist racism (racist villainous charactictures, mostly. a lot of this), ableism (outdated terminology for systemhood, occasional slurs), and sexism. extensive discussion of anti-semitism, specifically neo-nazism, in issues 37 and 38.

what happens - moon knight 1980 is a 38 issue comic book centering on the ex-mercenary and now hero moon knight. almost entirely episodic but there are occasionally multi-issue stories.

moon knight, in the day, is the millionare socialite steven grant, and, at night, the hero moon knight- moon knight also "uses" jake lockley as an informant. marc spector was the mercenary moon knight ran away from. doug moench was NOT intending to write a system at this point- steven and marcs relationship is meant to represent one mans struggle with guilt- but its really really easy to gel this with their current situation of being alters in a system and also some of the specifics of their whole thing make me fucking insane. jake is also there and i love him even if he isnt really a major part of the moral conflict

please dont read all 38 issues- attatched is a list of my personal ratings. everything later calls back to this so its best practice to read it first but its very much a slog if you arent already attatched to this character so make your own choice

nothing from 1980 to 2014 is particularly good (you can read it if you want but i havent) but knowing what happened is pretty important to understanding the later modern runs so a runthrough. throughout the 90s mk continued in the 80s status quo but in 2006 he 1. cut off bushmans (remember that guy from 1980?) face 2. was given a tendency for violence and and 3. became significantly more tense with marlene and frenchie. by 2014 they had completely fallen out. thats all we can continue with the recs now

MOON KNIGHT 2014 -

tws - graphic violence. do not buy the book new, warren ellis is an awful person. brief (doylist) ableism.

what happens in it - the first six issues are the warren ellis/declan shalvey run, which is what im reccomending. read the rest if you want, its mediocre but i like it

moon knight 2014 is 6 episodic issues centering on a now alone marc spector. steven and jake only show up twice, both lineless appearances in the back of panels. most of the issues are significantly more violent, dark, callbacks to old 1980 issues. most of the run is silent violence from marc but all of the stories are really good and the art is breathtaking.

MOON KNIGHT 2016 -

tws - unreality. mental hospitals. both doylist and watsonian ableism.

what happens - i am reccomending the lemire/smallwood + co run, the 15 issues before the numbers shoot up. i have not read the bemis run.

moon knight 2016 is 15 issues situated in a hallucinatory version of NYC, following moon knight as he struggles against khonshu's attempts to possess him. the thing is a lot of things in 2016 piss me off so i cant exactly sing its praises but its super important to modern moon knight so just. slog through it. highly reccomend reading after 1980 because it refrences A Lot.

MOON KNIGHT 2021 -

tws - violence, discussion of anti-semitism in issue 5.

what happens - i am reccomending the first 16 issues. the annual sort of triggered a falling off for the series and so i have not read after #16. read the later issues at your own risk

moon knight 2021 follows moon knight as he opens the midnight mission, gains multiple new side characters, and reckons with the consequences of the age of khonshu (an event in jason aarons avengers which is explained fine in 2021 so you dont have to read it). most of the series is typical action juxtaposed with MK's SHEILD-ordered therapy sessions. issues 14 and 15 are possibly the first time jake and steven have been written well since 1980. unfortunately, the annual is deeply xenophobic (villianizing the only romanian hero in marvel) and i have stopped reading the series due to this. the first 16 issues are really good though

MOON KNIGHT BLACK WHITE AND BLOOD -

tws - violence.

what happens - mkbwb is 4 issues consisting of 12 noncanon moon knight stories, as is typical for bwb series. most of them are pretty good and fun and also really pretty.

- defenders 1972 issues 47-51 - its Very 70s but its cute and i like it :)

- werewolf by night 32 and 33 - his first appearance!

State of the MCU

There's a lot of thinkpieces and YouTube videos about how the MCU is "over" or "damaged goods" after Secret Invasion.

Obviously they are trying to distract us from this talk by dropping the Loki (one of the good MCU shows) trailer today.

I think there are several different lessons to be learned by some of the failures or missteps of this period of "too much Marvel."

They went from doing three movies a year, to doing, well, a lot more content. I don't actually think that Marvel is "running out" of content. There are so many characters and storylines that have not even been touched on.

But I think Marvel got a bit excited about what it could do, without thinking about the hows of actually making the content. For example, during She-Hulk we heard from VFX artists that were overworked and underpaid that there just weren't enough hours in the day for them to make all these shows and movies. Clearly, someone at the top did not take that into consideration when greenlighting all the shows.

I think the disconnect between WandaVison and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness showed limitations in the production schedules of the various properties. The time making a show is different from making a movie. And it led to some disconnect between where the audience was and where the narrative was going.

I also think a lot of things were greenlit as a good idea without them being fully fleshed out. Secret Invasion is probably one of them. I hear Echo is another. (Feige called it "unreleaseable" which makes me wonder how bad it was, since he clearly thought Secret Invasion WAS releasable.)

Hopefully in the future they will settle into some kind of release schedule (for example it was a big deal when Marvel went from two movies a year to three and then they really seemed to have three a year down in the 2018 period). I don't know exactly how many shows they can add to that.

In 2021, we got four live action shows and 1 animated show. In 2022 we had three live action shows. And we are supposed to get three in 2023.

For the shows, I think maybe two a year is a good amount, to give the writers (Pay your writers, Disney!) and the entire team enough time to work (pay for VFX artists too!). And if you can produce two quality TV series that work as TV series, then maybe they could try for three.

I'm a bit nervous about next year because three are scheduled but one is Daredevil which is supposed to be a lot more episodes than the shows the MCU has done. Though he needs less CGI than other heroes, maybe it could work?

Though these things will all probably get pushed back due to the strikes going on now.

I also think there should be a reason that something is a TV show and not a movie. I don't like this talk of "six hour movies." That's not a thing. The format changes the experience. WandaVision and She-Hulk utilized the TV format as part of the narrative. And that's a great reason for it to be a show. But it's not the only one. (Moon Knight had a unique structure, where it was divided into two episodes in London, two episodes in Cairo, and two episodes in the Underworld. That was cool, but I would argue then it should've been released two at a time instead of week-to-week. And on Friday. I hate this Wednesday nonsense.)

I think about this shit too much.
