love moo deng, but stay aware of the problems surrounding her life and home

Not to be a killjoy (though it is what I do best) but the unsafe and rough handling of a baby Pygmy hippo in a pretty substandard Thai zoo being meme-ed into something funny and cute really shows just how much groupthink plays into public perception of animal welfare.

Moo Deng shows avoidance, threat displays and stress around her keepers that are constantly man-handling her, blasting her with a hose and harassing her. The enclosure is mostly concrete, which is horrible for her soft feet. There looks to be some substrate but there doesn’t seem to be any areas for wallowing or deep water wading.

There’s also very easy access of this hippo to the public with no places to hide. I’d love if someone could shed more light on the enclosures but from what I’ve seen it’s not great.

Also the free contact and forcing into tubs that the keepers do is only going to create an avoidant and potentially aggressive and dangerous Pygmy hippo.

But the public happily overlook that because she’s cute. It’s a similar attitude with seals too.

Stop rewarding bad husbandry with clout. Baby animals deserve agency and respect and to grow up without getting harassed and feeling the need to defend themselves constantly.

I rarely ever buy tickets and even I know full well the grisly wombo combo of base ticket prices, questionable ticketmaster practices, and scalpers. huge condolences and good luck!

the honee household is surviving and optimistic, thank you for asking. some incohesive updates:

moo deng has taken over our household. honee shows me a battery of moo deng tiktoks every morning and every night. every other sentence is a moo deng reference

honee had me doing mental multi-digit multiplication in bed at 1:30am so she could make a point about the proportion of our estimated lifetime we'd be spending together

honee consumed an inordinate amount of hummus before we made the unfortunate discovery there was mold in the container (no symptoms, hooray)

mega mawile finally debuted in pogo!! at last I can mega evolve the shiny mawile I caught back in 2019 (her name is plum)

honee has been pulling viciously late nights in the department but has also been insanely productive. we're very proud

we came home from work at 11pm today. it is 12:15am and she is still working, just from the couch now

honee's been learning phrases in my heritage language and now cycles between "you don't love me?", "goodbye" (anger), "go to sleep" (threat), and "I love bread"

yeah @honeekyuu could probably add more but she's busy, so you're stuck with just me

How to Moo Deng your way out of a bad day

1. Stay hydrated .

Moo deng loves the water she wants you to love it too . If you are afraid of large bodies of water you actually don't have to drink out of a large body of water to be like moo deng ! Shocking I know ! Instead use a small cup and a silly straw ( moo deng is silly ) or a pipette if you're really afraid of large bodies of water !

2. Stay moisturised .

OUR GIRL IS A SLIPPERY QUEEN ! If you dont have a loving zoological friend to tenderly spray you with water or pygmy hippo genetics . Thats's sad . Instead use a gentle moisturiser , you'll fell better if your skin feels more comfortable.

3. Scream a lot at inconvenience.

Trust.

4. Spend time with loved ones and admierers .

Moo deng is loved by all and so are you even if it dosent feel that way , me and moo deng love you .

5. Have a snack .

Moo deng loves to munch on fruit and veg . It nourishes her body and soul . She needs many souls so needs many vegetables and so do you. It will cheer you up .

"I've been thinking about this queen all day long."

Moo Deng - a name that roughly translates to "bouncy pig" - is a two-month-old female pygmy hippo going viral.

Zoo visitor numbers are said to have doubled since her birth in July, but videos have emerged showing some people mistreating the animal.

They were filmed throwing shellfish and even splashing water on Moo Deng to try to coax her out of sleep.

"These behaviours are not only cruel but also dangerous," the zoo's director said in a statement posted online.

Drag superstar Trixie Mattel has announced her return to drag on social media after a four-month break from drag.

Trixie Mattel to go back to work with Katya

On Instagram, Trixie posted a photo from her home state of Wisconsin, writing, “back to crossdressing Monday”.

She and her drag partner Katya are shortly touring their podcast The Bald and the Beautiful around the US.

Katya is also returning to Australia for a Halloween show tour at the end of the month.

Last month, Trixie and Katya became Kath & Kim fans when they watched and reacted to the iconic Aussie sitcom for the first time. It was for a previously-recorded episode of their YouTube series I Like To Watch for Netflix.
