MONTESSORI MONDAY: GRANDKITS REVIEW!
Tumblr media
One thing that I was so excited to do with Little Peanut that we didn't get to do with The Moo was Montessori Mobiles. And for some time I looked online for different options to hang them at a height that Little Peanut could admire and possibly interact with. After a while of looking at Baby Activity Centers that all looked the same it was refreshing to stumble upon Grandpa Wes with his shop GrandKits. These beautiful wooden activity centers are easy to stain to fit in with your decor, or leave it natural like we did. They do require a little bit of sanding once they arrive but nothing your partner can't handle if you are far enough along in your pregnancy like I was. The only thing I wish was different about this baby activity center would be that the metal screw didn't stick out of the top so much, I worried about her brother running by all crazy and falling on it somehow (paranoia I know). This could be easily fixed by cutting it shorter.
Tumblr media
The kit comes with some really cute wooden animals that you can hang. But for my purposes I really wanted to DIY my own Montessori Mobiles. Thankfully it was around the holidays when I created this Munari Mobile so it was far easier to find a plastic ornament to hang instead of a glass one.  Traditionally a glass globe is used but because this mobile was going to be more or less on her level we didn't need any glass falling on Little Peanut.
Tumblr media
It has been such a joy to watch Little Peanut discovering and now exploring her world. I love having the mirror right next to her so she can see not only herself but us as well. Oh my goodness, on the move already!
Tumblr media
We are getting ready to move into the bus and I love how small this activity center breaks down into. Check out our video showing off how to assemble and disassemble this beauty, its so easy!

And if you wanna take home one of these sweet Baby Activity Centers check out Grandpa Wes at GrandKits!

Lucas' 1st Visual Mobile - The DIY Munari Mobile It is a set of two-dimensional black and white geometric shapes balanced off by a glass ball that reflects the light. This is the first set of Maria Montessori's Visual Mobiles. It is used when the baby is awake not asleep (unlike the other commercial mobile) because it helps the baby to develop his sight, tracking, and focus. Babies can see upon birth but it is still blurry and the distance is 30 cm or 12 in - the distance from the mother's eyes to her breast. They see high-contrast visuals (black and white or black-white-red) the most. #montessorimobiles #munarimobile #onemontholdLucas https://www.instagram.com/p/BrPLTYjABb-zFQxRofJvMNnfnukVJk1z-W7MEQ0/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1ebt8mtui08y0

Montessori tactile mobiles
This post is one in a series of posts that covers the Montessori mobiles that we used for our children from birth through the intentional reaching and grasping stage. See the other posts in this series:

The Octahedron mobile
The Gobbi mobile
Our Montessori-inspired butterfly mobile (with FREE printable)
Montessori tactile mobiles
When the child has started reaching and batting for the visual mobiles (such as the Gobbi) or around 2.5-3 months old, tactile mobiles can be introduced. Tactile mobiles are simply objects hung from above for grasping, batting, or kicking. They often make a sound, so that the child associates his or her own movement with the movement of the object.
Below are the following tactile mobiles:
the primary colors mobile
a bell on a ribbon
a ring on a ribbon (below I have a wooden ring pictured as well as the largest metal ring from this set)
a puzzle ball on a ribbon (for grasping as well as kicking).

You can see Simon enjoying a few of the tactile mobiles below. We did our own homemade version of the primary colors mobile and hung it from a toy hanger though it is traditionally hung from the ceiling. Though we used a toy hanger, all of the tactile mobiles could also be hung from the ceiling with a ribbon and some elastic (to provide some give as the child pulls at it).

Bell on a ribbon
We introduced this tactile mobile first - at 2.6 months and as he was still enjoying the butterflies mobile. You can see the satisfaction on his face when he hits the bell and it makes a sound.

Primary Colors mobile
My father-in-law made this mobile, which is modeled after the primary colors mobile made by Beginning Montessori Materials, though ours turned out a little larger. He also made the toy hanger from which all our tactile mobiles hung. Both Charlotte and Simon enjoyed this mobile very much from around 3 months old.

Ball on a ribbon
This mobile is often hung for a child to kick, though Simon preferred to bat at it with his hands. This first video was at 3 months and you can see how he progressed with it in the second video, which was taken at 4 months.

Thus concludes the Montessori mobile series. At this point in a child’s life - once they have worked with all the mobiles (or similar ones) in the series - they are likely grasping at small rattles and teethers at will, and possibly rolling over and/or scooting forward to retrieve them. This would happen somewhere between 3 and 5 months typically, though the mobiles can still be used throughout that period as the child has interest.
As the child becomes even more mobile and capable with grasping, the mobiles will be replaced with objects placed on the floor or on a shelf for the child to retrieve and manipulate. I hope to do a post on early objects for manipulation (aka “toys”) soon.
Be sure to check out our Montessori mobiles overview for how and where to use the tactile mobiles and other mobiles, info on hanging mobiles and other thoughts on the use of mobiles in the home. In case you missed them, do check out the earlier posts in this series: the Munari mobile, the Octahedron mobile, the Gobbi mobile, and our Montessori-inspired butterflies mobile. And if you aren’t already, follow us on Facebook or Instagram to get updates on what’s happening in our Midwest Montessori home.
I hope you enjoyed this Montessori mobiles series and that the information has been helpful. Best of luck on your Montessori journey!
