She ought to slap him–she plans to as she walks over towards him, but then a better thought occurs to her. What if she kissed him instesad? The AU where Hermione kisses Malfoy instead of hitting him third year and everything changes.

December Wrap Up

What the fuck, how is the year over? I'm finally home after an extended visit with family over the holidays on account of the whole blizzard thing - a whopping 13(?) days of sleeping on the couch and eating Christmas candy and not knowing what day it was - and now you're trying to tell me that it's 2023?? In this economy??

Things I Wrote

Babes, I wrote nothing. I wrote zero things. Not a single writerly thought entered my brain this month.

Things I Read

Word count is going to skew a little higher this month because I *finally* read the final chapter of LaOHA (started way back in April and very poetically finished on Dec 31). Also, a large number of fics can be attributed to holiday group reads over in the RoR discord server. I'm delighted that we're making this a little holiday tradition 💝

Additionally, I was lucky enough to lend my voice to a podfic project. Over 20 voices came together to bring All I Want For Christmas (Is For You To Stop Talking) to life, with a chapter released each day leading up to Christmas. It was such a fun way to experience the story, and you can find the podfic version here!

Things I'm Currently Reading (Heading into 2023)

Well, shoot. I made a whole little list for myself in my notebook. Titled it "To Read Before End of Year" and everything. And yet (and yet, and yet).

So I guess heading into 2023, I have 9 WIPs I'm following that I need to catch up on. I started both Chosen by 5moreminutes and Disappearances by @batmansymbol this year (one as part of a group read and the other listening along to live recordings). Life happened and I never finished either, so they are top of my list for 2023. We had also started Contradictions as a group read before life rudely got in the way there, too. Never fear, @ambpersand my love, my horny deranged screams are coming for you this year!!

“Peanut, you need to be careful. Don't get swept up into moving too fast with Ky- with Ben,” Finn corrected himself as he looked at her with worried eyes, “He’s gotta be used to girls who…”

He trailed off to look helplessly at Rose who rolled her eyes at him.

“What he’s trying to say is don’t jump into anything with him.” She paused and waved her hand at Rey. “Well, you already jumped, but try to take it slow from here on out, okay?”

“What she said.” Finn snapped his fingers and pointed to Rose, nodding vigorously. “Guys like him are-”

“Ben isn’t like that,” Rey interrupted him, flushing as she did, knowing she sounded stereotypical. “He doesn’t do groupies, he’s really a quiet kind of a guy.”

Draco blinked at the muggle—for that’s what his father had said those that lived above the sea were called—and bit back the urge to dive back beneath the waves and never come back.

“A what?” he asked instead, slowly swimming closer to the girl perched atop the rock. Her knuckles were white as they gripped the edge of it and stared down at him.

“A mermaid,” she repeated, tilting her head and staring at his tail. She was looking at him with barely concealed wonder. Draco sometimes caught his parents staring at each other like that and he ignored that shudder that thrilled through him at being on the receiving end.

“I guess.”

“Is that not what you call yourself?”

“My names, Draco,” he huffed, staring up at her.

Rey finishes trudging up the beach to where the sand becomes more compact and eventually turns to darker soil just on the edge of the forest. She finds a large rock and plops down to remove her boots and shake the sand out.

She really doesn’t miss living in a desert.

Then the energy shifts around her, and she hears the telltale sound of the bond opening. “Ben,” she breathes. “Where are we?”

He’s standing, though she can’t see his surroundings. “I’m not sure… I think I read about this area once, an old species inhabited this whole system, very secretive. There doesn’t seem to be any sentient beings here, though.”

“At least not yet.”

He makes a face that reminds her of Han and suddenly she realizes, maybe she doesn’t know this Ben Solo as well as she thought. His soul, she knows intimately, but the rest of him? Maybe not so much. He turns to the left, looking at something. “This place is so big.”

“I know. I saw the plume of smoke from your ship, I think. If that’s what it was, you might be on the other side of the island from me.”

He frowns. “I will find you, Rey.”
