010: Jealousy

His shoulders are broad – that coat hides it well. You watch him rub shoulders with some of the locals at the bar. They pat his back, congratulate him on a job well done turning those bandits out of town.

“First round’s on me,” a woman purrs next to him. She rubs one of his shoulders. His ears go red, and you turn away with a silly gut feeling reserved for jealous teen girls. Luckily, your meal order comes.

“Alright,” the man says, setting down two large sets of plates, “got your house special here, and two bread bowls with our daily soup.” He wipes his hands and gives you a smile. “That’s a lot for a lady!”

“Oh, uh,” you blanch at the slight insult, “my friend, he’s…” you gesture toward Vash. The woman is hanging off his arm now, and it’s hard to tell if his coat or cheeks are redder. Still, he gives her a charming smile. Your stomach curdles. You thought that was your smile.

The man looks toward Vash and clicks his tongue. “Wouldn’t want to be him. Gabby has a way of getting into your wallet when you aren’t looking.” Alarmed, you stand, but the man laughs and waves you down. “I just mean her looks, darlin’. Fellas always throw her gifts and presents when they walk into town. Our hero might just find himself some double dollars short if he lets her keep at it.” He pauses and smiles, “‘Sides, maybe he deserves it for leaving you alone.” He looks you over and gives a wink. “Couldn’t be me if I had someone like you around all the time.”

Now you feel hot. A shaky laugh escapes, but you’re still slightly charmed by his obvious flirting.

“Here,” he continues, and slips a fat slice of cake on the table. “It’s not much, but you’re a hero like him. I saw the way you tricked those bandits into going outside. Wouldn’t have turned out nearly as nice if you hadn’t.” He takes your hand, bends down, and presses a light kiss to your knuckle. The man thankfully waves and goes back to the kitchen afterward.

You don’t know why, but you’re touched by the gesture. Not often people even notice you around when Vash saves the day – or ruins it, depending on who you are. You hum and pick at the cake, thinking of eating it before Vash can even smell it.

“Who was that?”

You jump at his voice and watch Vash slide into the booth. He gives you a smile, but it’s off. It’s one of his reserved ones, the one where he isn’t sure about something. “Oh,” you say, “just the waiter from the kitchen. He was just chatting.”

“Looked like flirting to me,” he comments. His mouth skews, his eyes watch the waiter go back through the swinging door with a strange intensity.

And just the way he says it, after he had a woman nearly in his lap not two minutes ago…An ugly little monster crawls up your throat and says, “Maybe it was.” You stab a bit of the cake and take a bite. “Wouldn’t mind getting picked up by him. Good lookin’.”

Those broad shoulders slump, and you feel no joy in the way his eyes sadden. “Oh, well…” he clears his throat and picks up a fork for his soup, “good for you!”

Any mirth you got from his reaction is short lived. He swirls the fork in his bread bowl, picking it up and letting the liquid dribble off the prongs, then doing it again. It's like you kicked a puppy. You sigh and get up. Damn his thick skull. Vash watches, suddenly afraid you're leaving (where? To the waiter?), but instead you sit beside and hip-check him to make room. “We’d better eat this cake before Gabby gets her grubby hands on it, too.”

Your shoulders brush, and you feel more than see him perk up – at your closeness, and the promise of cake. He’s too easy to please, you think. But your forks pick away at the cake before your dinner, and as you both fight over the last piece in a duel of utensils, you think you’re easy to please, too.

Especially when you have that charming smile all to yourself again.

Review: Terrifier 3

With Terrifier 3, the little indie splatter horror franchise that could has entered "franchise mode". On top of its advertising, its merchandising, its tie-in single by Ice Nine Kills, and its staggering box-office success, the movie itself makes Art the Clown as much the main character as its returning heroine Sienna Shaw, with nearly every kill now a horrifying set piece of explosive carnage and Art's sidekick from the last movie, the ambiguously demonic Little Pale Girl, upgraded to a co-villain in her own right as she possesses somebody and joins in on the action herself. The best comparison I can think of is A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master, though I'd argue that this is the better movie of the two by a wide margin, one that not only cleans up the biggest flaw that held back its predecessor but also manages to be a twisted, explosive celebration of practical effects work unbound by the MPA (as in, they just up and released this unrated knowing damn well it would've gotten an NC-17 the second they showed up at the MPA's offices). It's a big, swaggering splatterfest that's as bonkers as its killer clown villain, and while it does unfortunately introduce some new flaws that leave me wondering if Damien Leone, the writer, director, and main visionary behind this series, is getting lost in the weeds a bit with his creation, this is otherwise one hell of an experience.

Set five years after the events of the last movie, our protagonist Sienna Shaw, who has spent her time in and out of psychiatric care thanks to what she experienced in her last encounter with Art the Clown, has just left the hospital to live with her aunt Jess, uncle Greg, and little cousin Gabbie. The idea of a slasher sequel focusing on how traumatized the final girl has become is not a new idea (all the way back in the '90s, Scream 2 and Halloween H20: Twenty Years Later built their heroines' arcs around it), but this movie does it well, in its characteristic fashion. Lauren LaVera gets another great opportunity to play Sienna as more than just the "tough chick" horror heroine, somebody who can undoubtedly still kick Art's ass but has also been left a psychological wreck by all the things she's witnessed. She has visions of her dead friends blaming her for their deaths, the last movie's implications that she was going insane all but spelled out in the text now, and she recoils when Gabbie goes snooping in her diary and reads about some of the things she described in there. We get a flashback to Sienna's childhood, her father played by Jason Patric in a cameo, illustrating how she loved him and driving home how much his decline and ultimate death broke her. I find it amusing how the Terrifier films, with their in-your-face violence and lack of subtlety, are sometimes seen as a rejoinder to the "elevated horror" boom of the last ten years, particularly how many such films use their monsters and demons as metaphors for some trauma in the protagonists' pasts, because Sienna's arc in these movies treads very similar waters -- and, for my money, more or less pulls it off. In two movies, Sienna Shaw has become one of the all-time great horror heroines, and LaVera is central to why.

It also helps, of course, to have a real monster for your heroine to face off against. And here, we have not one, but two of them. I've already sung David Howard Thornton's praises for his performance as Art the Clown before, and he largely sticks to what worked in the past, combining great physical comedy with a mean streak a mile wide to make for a sick, sadistic villain who treats everything like one big joke and is clearly enjoying himself as he hunts and torments his victims. At times, Art feels almost like a silent slasher version of Deadpool, a guy who's in on the joke and feels like he wants to let everybody else in on it too. The Little Pale Girl also makes a return, in a sense, this time possessing the first film's lone survivor Victoria Hayes, who begins the film institutionalized after Art had mutilated her face and driven her insane only for Art to break her out. If Art is a slasher version of the Joker, then the possessed Victoria is his Harley Quinn, a female counterpart who is not only just as vicious and terrifying but also serves as his "voice" throughout the film, being the one who directly taunts people through words as opposed to just gestures. Samantha Scaffidi is playing a character almost wholly different from what she was in the first movie, unrecognizable both literally due to her mangled face and figuratively as she partakes in the violence rather than trying to survive it, and she turned out to be the film's secret weapon, somebody who kept the scares grounded even as Art takes the Freddy Krueger route of becoming a more overtly comedic killer. Victoria brought most of the film's genuine scares here versus Art's more cartoonish carnage, and she proved to be a very welcome addition to not only the lore but also, more importantly, the movie as a whole.

That's not to say that Art isn't scary anymore, though. As I've said when discussing the prior films, sheer visceral excess has a weight to it all its own, and when paired with the more comedic elements of his character, that lends him the feeling of a sick, degenerate troll for whom nothing actually matters except his own amusement. This is a movie that happily crosses lines that other slashers wouldn't dare tread near, a gross display of viscera that offers Leone another chance to show off his special effects craftsmanship with the kind of set piece kills that feel like they were concocted by a schoolyard full of kids in a contest to come up with the sickest ways to die. We get a guy getting the skin on his head ripped off, liquid nitrogen being used to freeze a man's flesh before it's smashed off with a hammer, live rats being shoved down a woman's throat and then eating their way out through her neck, a shower scene to rival the infamous bedroom scene from the second film (...who says that doesn't fit there?), beheadings, dismemberments, the works, as well as Art actually "going there" when it comes to one of horror's biggest taboos. These movies are being hyped up at this point as gauntlets for seasoned horror fans to run (and shock others with), and while the tone is too lighthearted for it to really hang with the grossest examples of splatter horror, make no mistake: the warnings that theaters are putting up for this are there for a reason.

The pacing is tighter this time around, showing that Leone has learned from one of the main criticisms of the last movie. It's still just over two hours long, but it moves a lot quicker than before, each hour respectively feeling like the first two acts of a movie that's setting up for a smashing finale but still delivering the goods where it matters. The plot builds on the second film's implications that there was something more cosmic going on than just a simple slasher story, explicitly naming the Little Pale Girl as a demon and strongly implying that Sienna too has an angel in her corner, ultimately ending on a cliffhanger and leaving a lot of open questions that the fourth movie promises to answer. The added lore did a lot to flesh out the story, put some fun twists on a lot of slasher tropes (the final girl, the killer coming back from the dead), and got me interested in seeing the next one. That said, not only does it create a risk of continuity lockout for people who haven't seen any of the other films, especially with how the opening hinges so much on characters and events from the second film, it also naturally means that this movie's own story is incomplete. A lot hinges on whether the fourth movie sticks the landing, and right now, all I can say is this: at least they didn't try to expand on Art's backstory the way the Nightmare sequels did Freddy's or the Halloween sequels did Michael Myers'. His whole deal boils down to the fact that he was such an evil fuckin' bastard in life (which, if you've seen any of these movies... yeah) that the forces of darkness took a liking to him and revived him as their champion to keep killing. It's a simple explanation that preserves his mystique and doesn't detract from what makes him so enjoyable to watch, the kind of thing you'd expect a slasher fan to come up with if they were asked to develop the lore around a slasher villain, and I appreciated it.

The Bottom Line

Terrifier 3 isn't without its flaws, but it's still the best film in the series thus far. If Art the Clown isn't a bona fide horror icon at this point, then it's only because he's still fairly new. Check it out if you've got the stomach.

So, I've been having this Tumblr account for a few months now - although I've barely used this account since then. I also didn't know whether or not I would actually post much on here. However, I've decided that I want to start being active on here, so I thought the best way to start being more active on here is to introduce myself!

Favorite hobbies: daydreaming, listening to music, writing, and making Youtube videos. I used to be into drawing, music production, singing, and learning other languages, but I don't have the time to do ALL of that lol. Plus, I don't usually consider someone my favorite artist if I only like a handful of their songs.

Other facts about me: I'm a vegan. I love cats, birds, and other animals. I also love astronomy, nature, and a lot of things/concepts that have to do with spirituality (like the idea of guardian angels or the idea that the universe is looking out for you - stuff like that, as silly as it sounds, is very comforting to me). I can also get kinda political because I'm passionate about this world being a better place and politics unfortunately controls a lot of what happens in the world - I probably won't get very political here though, so don't worry about that. Also, self-love is very important to me and trying to be my own best friend is one of the only things that is helping me to not have mental breakdowns all the time, so yeah, I value self-love a lot and I highly recommend practicing more self-love and being your own best friend as well :)

Disventure Camp All Stars Finale Spoiler

Alright a season in the can let take a stock and let me given my opinions on the use of all the characters this season

The Great

Ashley came out shining this season, she got to last longer was shown to be very competent and beat the jobber allegations from Season 1. If you are an Ashley your happy to see your girl be treated as the threat you believed she would've been I was a doubter on the Yul & Grett story line, I won't pretend I wasn't. Though Grett really shined and honestly she got snubbed for the finale. I think she quite over performed and was a bright spot during the late episodes. Good, I guess

Tess got more screen time and was important several arcs before her elimination. I came out feeling something about her and hey that something more than S2. Tom was shaky at the start but he had an alright back half dealing with his nonsense and I did like him being a challenge fiend and in the finale so hey good on him. Yul got time to really shine as a villain, he got some good lines and moments and hey we all loved seeing him eat shit. Good use. Conner almost went into Mix Bag but but he got screen time, storylines, and character dynamics with the others. Did he regress that one episode, yes. Did it feel like a slap in the face, yes! but overall I think there was more good than bad. Mix Bag

Aiden I feel had some good moments and he was important to plot points but like it feel like there was more. Not 100% sure, but it felt like his story was in the service to Jake's and not really his own showing and I think he could have a stronger role in this season. Ally, man she made finals and had some good stuff but it didn't feel like she got finalist screentime. Did she have a strong show late, maybe. But man she wasting away before that and the wishy washy writing when she was being a flip flopper in my opinion wasn't great. Maybe that an opinion thing, but I still feel nothing strong about her and that a failure for a top 3 member.

Gabby had a great post merge, but before merge she had no screentime! Like literally nothing for like 9 episode straight and that not right for a popular character like Gabby! If she had more easy spot in the upper tiers but with what we got it a mixbag.

Jake, he need at least one moment of being a strong player, he can't be choker early, mid, and late. He had good character moments but for a finalist in ALL STARS, did he really have an All Star performance or was it a lot of interesting choices and making a lot of unnecessary rivals and haters.

Oh Alec, my beloved. You were robbed, great early and mid performance but that late game UGH. So much missed opportunities!

Ellie as a player was interesting and I think she was a good inclusion but just kind left a wish for more than what she did get. But we at least got some stuff and that saves her from being wasted.

The Wasted

Fiore was here, and hey she at least made up with Alec. But I can't really remember anything besides leave Yul speechless in the first episode as a standout Fiore moment. Hunter S2 was a challenge monster. S3 Hunter was an idiot who loss a feud to a child and was in a middling storyline. Kind of a waste if you ask me. Lake sure was in this season, and if that all I have to say that a god damn shame. Miriam & James were former champion and had to be here but they did pretty very little in the grand scheme of things.

Riya Tier

Oh boy the big dawg got her win, she Miss Main Event, the ALL STAR, The first villain to win. But who cares, who really celebrating a Riya win when we could of had a Grett win, an Alec win, an Ellie win, or even a Fiore win if we want a Villain to win. You could of even crafted a new villain for the win, because besides Yul, she was the villain we discounted from the running the most, and at least Yul was entertaining. All Riya did was give us the most boring winner story out of the final 3. Congratulations Riya, you help made me lose part of my hype for Disventure Camp. You were forced like Roman Reign instead of organically and see you win was the wet fart it was when WWE tried to do it with be pre tribal chief Roman Reigns.

idk I think Taylor’s worst nightmare is a younger doppelgänger without the hang ups she had. THIS WAS SO CUUUUTTTTTEEEEE!!! i liked the way the author portrayed the genuine hell that being stuck at 17 would be. please get me out of here i want a fully developed frontal lobe. AW and all of the characters were super likable. truly so adorable i was squealing the whole time.

im knocking a point off for the romance being a littttllllleeeee rushed and the character descriptions feeling off (it felt odd that both pov characters categorized every single person into a specific race? i think its good practice to make a characters race clear, but idk if that applies to a random teacher with no dialogue). to be so real though i loved this book enough that it didn't bother me too much.

did i finish this book in one sitting? yes. did i stay up until 1am doing that? ...mind your business. honestly, im maybeee being a little bit generous giving this 5 stars but !! i really liked it!!! rom was soo mecore. i'm excited to read the rest of the books in this collection (even though they're all christmasy), and i can't wait for my physical copy to get here!!

this book was truly just fine. like, the definition of pretty alright. the tropes weren't my thing and the romance felt wildly rushed, but the writing style was easy to read and there were some funny bits. i also felt like the demon characters fell pretty flat? idk felt mid overall. (tbh the highlights of this book were when rom and noelle showed up. my babiesssss)

i have a lot of books i'd like to re-read but!!! i just never get around to it!!!! there r always newer shinier books that grab my attention!! i'd also like to carve away a more sizable chunk of my physical tbr this month because i have officially run out of space on my bookshelf TwT. everything is so so crammed in there, i truly cannot afford any more physical books. public library here i come!!
