MONOKEL
Invitation to the famed Berlin lesbian bar, months before the rise of the Nazi Party. Illustrated handbill, 105x150 mm; 4x5¾ inches, completed in manuscript with date and event; folds, otherwise minimal wear. [Berlin], 3 March 1932.
Monokel was opened in 1931, one of three lesbian clubs run by Lotte Hahm (1890-1967), known for wearing short hair and tuxedos, and her partner Käthe Fleischmann (1899-1967) as part of Berlin's flourishing gay scene. It was named after the monocle, which had become a fashion staple among the international lesbian community. In this invitation, Monokel is described as "Die Bar der Frau" (the bar for women), and offers dancing and a cabaret program with free admission. The illustration shows two elegantly dressed women dancing.
Less than a year after this invitation was issued, the Nazi Party rose to power and began a violent assault on Berlin's gay culture. Fleischmann, who was Jewish, spent two years doing hard labor in a work camp before escaping; she barely survived the war.

I can't really feel sadness, at least not about real life, so I think the emotion I usually experience in place of sadness is disappointement.
And guys. I am VERY disappointed in a situation I got myself into. It is MY fault. I take full responsibility. I was even warned multiple times, but I was like nah man don't you know I don't experience human emotions? I'll be FINE! Haha. Well..... I am not fine.
I think what I really need to get better is just a good quality karaoke night at Monokel. Save me the gays save me.
#Sorry again for the vague#Mariontext#Fr I am spending way too much of my time with the hets it's not good for my well being

MAISON ROSE x MONOKEL + NEW PAINTINGS by DANIEL GIANFRANCESCHI
_______________________________________________________________________ www.maisonrosecollection.com // www.daniel-gianfranceschi.tumblr.com First and foremost, thank you for joining us in this gracious space. Confronted with the installation of various paintings by Daniel Gianfranceschi and the newest Maison Rose x Monokel collection launch one may spot a certain shared interest in materials. The collaborative suit by Louis Renaud from Maison Rose is a reinterpretation of a classic Monokel suit. Double breasted in nature, the suit, made out of the finest Irish linen, is meant to be something to be worn for ages, for by the grace of time the material may unfold it´s truest characteristics. The hand finished buttonholes serve as a remainder of traditional tailoring – the roots of a brand like Monokel and a core interest for Louis Renaud. Furthermore, a suit, by no surprise, will always give the wearer a certain attitude. Think of figures like Warren Ellis or the ever-performing Iggy Pop, almost not existing without their trademark attire. In this sense, Maison Rose and Monokel present a garment that is built for even the finest of occasions while, at the same time, not being afraid of the (almost needed) wear and tear. Make the product your own.
While talking about this collision of ideas, one cannot miss the almost evident absence of bright colors. This is as clear as ever in the new works from the ongoing “Crawl Spaces” by German/Italian artist Daniel Gianfranceschi. All canvases being wrapped in a jute-like linen fabric, they firstly present themselves like a blank sheet, awaiting reception. Being reduced to two compositional elements (black and brown), they seem to recall holes, shadows, pits, comfort zones. These pits, these somewhat formless-but-bound-to-the-circle forms that are swallowed by the accumulation of monochrome tones and the lack of (the so-called negative space, a key aspect of Gianfranceschi´s work. Negative space as the areas left untethered by the artist, revealing the true nature of the material.) are materializations of a paradox. A bottomless pit, a space one can never leave, a hiding spot the one leaves only on the rarest of occasions (maybe, a Burrow, after all?) as to escape and, yet, willingly accepting the place on inhabits. They seem to live a life of their own, each one hiding and revealing something different and all of them at once trying to escape while being fully self-aware of the impossibility of playing both parts.
The window installation offers a more minimal approach to the Crawl Spaces series. Serving to only as a wholly finished work in itself, the rolls of linen also highlight the aforementioned suit by Maison Rose x Monokel, coming full-circle after all.
Thank you.

Okay so I have way too many historical blorbos I want to talk about here (I wrote my thesis on trans-authored journals and am currently doing a comic on it for uni, yay for me) but here are some highlights of what lesbians and so called "transvestites" (trans people but also generally anybody being gnc) were up to in and around Berlin in the 20s and early 30s:
There were frequent outings where you could join a ladies-only bus ride somewhere out of town, sometimes into the forest, sometimes for "moongazing" with "intimate lighting". Ladies-only did include transfeminine individuals, for anyone wondering.
Many of these were organised by Lotte Hahm, owner of a bar called the "Monokel Diele" (Monocle Hall? Hallway?). It was a general meeting point, but she also organised events such as dance evenings or a beach festival where you would receive goodies for coming in a costume. During that specific festival, there were also tug of war tournaments held every night.
But there were also semi-private meetings advertised for more introverted people or people who wished to stay out of the public eye. Dr. Hella Knabe was a seamstress and expert for wigs specialising in services for transfeminine people. If items were too expensive (which they were for many) she offered payment plans. Her customers could also stay with her if they traveled to Berlin from farther away and there was a meet-up of trans people every afternoon at her place for tea and chatting. In the magazines she was called the "Helper of the Transvestites".
There is so much more quality content in those journals, but I rambled too much already. For people who know German: One of the journals is nearly fully digitised and can be found here!
thank god for Magnus Hirschfeld and his noting of this pastry shop frequented by middle-class Jewish lesbians around 1904 holy shit don’t ever tell me anything is too specific a demographic again
