On this day, in recent history, it appears I prefer to drink, #surprisesurprise. #MonkeyPuzzle was my fav @mcmenamins whiskey... until I discovered their #AvalPotaWhiskey last year. Araucaria araucana (commonly called the monkey puzzle tree, monkey tail tree, piñonero, pewen or Chilean pine) is an evergreen tree growing to 1–1.5 m (3–5 ft) in diameter and 30–40 m (100–130 ft) in height. It is native to central and southern Chile and western Argentina. . . Araucaria araucana is the hardiest species in the conifer genus Araucaria. Because of the prevalence of similar species in ancient prehistory, it is sometimes called a living fossil. It is also the national tree of Chile. Araucaria araucana (Monkey Puzzle Tree). #oneadayplant Lots of differing opinions on Monkey Puzzles. I really like them, but they are totally unsuitable for a lot of the garden you see them in. It is a big tree and it doesn’t compromise at all. Not suitable for 99% of gardens in the UK. Needs space and time to establish and ideally space where it can grow without you get near to the sharp and inflexible needles. Fascinating as an ancient (Fossil Record, chewed on by dinosaurs, South American) tree. A novelty and unique in appearance. I want, at some point, to try eating the cooked seeds, which I’ve seen before. Again, probably more novelty than culinary delight, but worth a go.
