For the first time in over a month, I "went to town" to get some essentials that we don't have in our little town. I stopped at a Walmart to look for some of the things I knew I couldn't get at Sam's Club. I wandered by the book section and the cover of this caught my eye. It's a post-WWII setting about a young Jewish girl liberated from a concentration camp in search of her brother. It has been so long since I was able to wander the book aisle (or even book store) and stumble upon a book I wasn't already anticipating. I don't know when I'll get around to reading this, but I'm going to try to do it sooner rather than later. #books #reading #theywentleft #monicahesse #holocaust #holocaustremembrance #wwii #historicalfiction #notwhatiusuallygofor #butiliketoexpandmyworldsometimes https://www.instagram.com/p/CAA3AOCnFXEPwxtW0QQgW3tcCzIEz1ClvmKnss0/?igshid=1wage93g5h4cu

Do you like to read outside?⁣ ⁣ _________________________________________⁣ ⁣ Germany, 1945.⁣ ⁣ The soldiers who liberated the Gross-Rosen concentration camp said the war was over, but nothing feels over to eighteen-year-old Zofia Lederman. Her body has barely begun to heal; her mind feels broken. Just finished the audio cd of #girlinthebluecoat by #monicahesse. I got it because of how much I enjoyed They Went Left, and while this didn’t have as much of an emotional impact for me, it was just as delicious and fascinating. #bookstagram #audiobooks #reading #books #yalovin #yareads #ww2 #amsterdam #yalit #yahistoricalfiction https://www.instagram.com/p/CA0nBaZg1lR/?igshid=14iyog3d2dfqz

Apologies for the boring photo, my creativity has been a little nonexistent lately… This was a fantastic book though! Heart wrenching, poignant, and well written. Every character, even the ones only present for one page, had such depth and felt so real. I loved that this took place after WWII as it seems many novels about the war only take place during. In fact there were multiple points brought up that aren’t often discussed, and I really appreciated that. Would highly recommend. And yes, I cried. — ⭐️ 5/5 Stars — #bookstagram #bookrecommendations #bookreview #historicalfiction #yabooks #wwiibooks #theywentleft #monicahesse https://www.instagram.com/p/CAdVUyTgUoK/?igshid=yy3k1i4l8li

Hello, to all folks whose discussion about the 6-week abortion ban has reveals [sic] a shocking lack of knowledge about human biology! Here is how pregnancy works: 1) A pregnancy is counted from the first day of woman's last period. Say that's May 1.
2) There is a small fertile window around the time of ovulation, in which to conceive. Say you conceive until May 14. If you conceive then, at that point the woman will already be considered two weeks pregnant. Weird. I know! 3) She cannot immediately take a pregnancy test after conception. A) It takes the egg several days to implant. B) The test won't be effective. Most doctors recommend you wait to take them until you have missed a period. That's when they're effective predictors of pregnancy. 4) If her cycle is spot-on, her period should arrive at the end of May. Say, May 28-30 under laboratory conditions. 5) But women aren't laboratories! It's very common for cycles to be irregular! For many reasons: stress, biology, illness, etc. It might be June 7-8 before a woman thinks, "Hmm...Maybe I should see if something is going on?"
6) By June 7, even though she had sex just three-ish weeks before, she is already considered 5 and a half weeks pregnant. 7) If she doesn't want to be pregnant, she now has about four days to make that decision, find a safe and reputable clinic, raise money, secure transportation, and get time off of work. And this is assuming there are even available appointments in that time span. 8) This is why the Georgia bill is considered a defacto ban. Thank you for coming to my presentation entitled, "Fifth Grade Health Class." "considered by some," I should have added. Not everyone thinks of it this way. ~ @MonicaHesse

Sorry for dropping off! I had a family emergency this past week, but I'm home now! I'll announce the winner of the book giveaway in a couple of hours! Thanks to all who entered the Tumblr giveaway or the Instagram giveaway! Happy Friday everyone!! I'm loving these two stories! The War Outside by Monica Hesse was an amazingly bittersweet tale of friendship, love, betrayal, and overcoming hardships in a time of prejudice and fear. Amber & Dusk by Lyra Selene features a girl who know she deserves more than she has, and sets off on a journey to prove it. #bookstgram #bookish #yabooks #thewaroutside #monicahesse #history #historical #fiction #yafiction #yafantasy #bookdragon #booknerdigans #mybookishfeatures #bookgiveaway #girl #power #bookphotography #booklover #tgif #october #bookishpost https://www.instagram.com/p/Boj2Qu6FHo3/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=10nc03z0muuc9

Still wading through the Supreme Court dissent. It's amazing how some Justices know for certain that "discrimination by sex" only referred to straight people in 1964, but are also certain that "right to bear arms" in 1789 referred to bazookas, flamethrowers, AR15s and whatnot.
