Cryptid of the Day: Mongolian Death Worm
Description: In Roy Chapman Andrew’s 1926 book, On the Trail of Ancient Man, the American paleontologist was told of tales of a monster worm roaming the Gobi desert by Mongolian officials. Though he was not convinced it was real, it wouldn’t be until 1983 that a specimen of Tartar sand boa was shown to those claiming the existence of the worm that it was determined to be a misidentification.

Almas, Adam-Ayu, Almasti, Almaslar, Bnahua, Ochokochi
Origin: Pamir mountain range, Caucasus mountain range, Mongolian mountain range, Central Asia The Almas is a large, ape-like creature similar to the Abnauayu who live in the Caucasus Mountain Range. The most recent sightings of the Almas locate it near the southern part of Mongolia, along the Altai Mountains and the Tien Shan pass near the northern border of China. The Almas first appeared on record in the 1400s and "is not used to refer to one organism, but a community of many"

Niche Cryptids #3: Mongolian Death Worm
This is a fun one! The Mongolian Death Worm, or, olgoi-khorkhoi, is a large, three foot long red worm creature said to live somewhere in the sands of the southern Gobi Desert. It sprays a corrosive fluid strong enough to kill, but can also give off a strong electrical discharge to stun its victims. Hate that! The worm has existed in local folklore for many years and while there's many verbal accounts passed down of its existence, scientists and cryptozoologist enthusiasts have never been able to find any traces in the vast desert. Some think maybe this legend can be contributed to legless lizards or snakes, as a number can be venomous or even spit substances long distances, but none quite fit the description of "meter-long red worm with barbs on either end that burrows like a Tremors monster and shoots acid and electricity at you". Then again, there's some spooky stuff out there! Just look at my big fav, the bobbit worm. Sometimes nature can be scarier than we think.
Thanks to my patrons for picking September's illustration prompt!!

Cryptid of the Week: Mongolian Death Worm
All in all, it's a giant worm that lives in the Gobi desert. Some accounts give it acid or venom that it uses to hunt its prey-- humans and livestock-- and some accounts even give it powers of electroshock. Its size seems to differ depending on the account.
If something about this seems familiar-- well. Tremors and Dune have their own versions of the Mongolian Death Worm, and the Krayt Dragons from Star Wars seem pretty similar, too (not to mention the Alaskan Bull Worm from Spongebob).
In recent years many have tried to find proof that this monster exists, some speculating that it might be a worm lizard or the Tartar Sand Boa. Still, whether it's real or not, there hasn't been hard proof of its existence.
As the X-Files puts it... the truth is out there

Perhaps you’ve heard the legends, or maybe you’re just curious about the strange and unexplained. This blog post shares 17 famous cryptid animals and the sightings that have kept their legends alive.
