The city, on first impression, felt like two entirely different worlds combined into one - the high streets of Saint Denis had very little in common with the slums on the east side. A standard of high elegance and beauty on the surface so perfectly concealed the rot of corruption and evil on the inside, and Caleb knew by now that everything was all the same. not to sound like one of Those Guys or anything, but Rowling being outed as an racist asshole on top of being a transphobe really wasn’t all that surprising if you actually read the fuckin’ books. Like I used to be a big fan of her books when I was a kid but lots of things stood out to me as Really Goddamn Upsetting such as

-The treatment of non-human magical creatures, particularly sapient ones like goblins and centaurs. There’s some mentions of them being treated badly by wizardkind, but most of the time the interactions between the main ‘good’ cast members and them could be boiled down to ‘ugh they’re so rude to me for no reason’. Like yeah of COURSE they’re going to fucking hate you, you’re assholes to them who shove them into tight spaces and exploit them. The whole deal with the goblins considering the sword of griffenfuck or whatever theirs still also rubbed me the wrong way bc it was painted as greedy and wrong when it’s literally just a goddamn cultural difference. Like, they made it, bitch, they have priority over it, it’s theirs. They aren’t being greedy, you’re the assholes who think that you get everything you want bc you’re a human who can shoot sparks out of a stick

-The house-elves. I don’t even have to explain this one. The original legend for brownies isn’t racist at all, but she twisted it from ‘forest spirit doing you a favor because you’re a good neighbor’ into ‘slave race that gets regularly abused and this is okay and normal’. Even as a 7 year old I could understand that that was fucking awful, like come the fuck ON

-The treatment of magical beings in general and the dichotomy of how Hagrid was portrayed vs Newt. There was always this big ‘good monsters’ vs ‘bad monsters’ deal going on that pissed me the FUCK off because it’s very clear that those creatures are just...part of the world?? They’re part of a magical ecosystem?? It’s good to learn about them and treat them with respect??? But whenever Hagrid dealt with more dangerous monsters, he was treated as a lunatic and a weirdo while the Newt Scamander guy got treated as...well, still a weirdo, but a cool one that showed you the true beauty of his fantastical creatures. Like maybe this is just me being a conservation biologist but as someone who’s a conservation biologist and is also mixed-race, it really fuckin pisses me off that the mixed-race guy with the big heart is treated as bumbling and oblivious when caring about dangerous, yet essential monsters and teaching about how to care for them, and the white british guy is shown as the pretty, wise, slightly awkward dude when doing the exact same thing. Like yeah, Hagrid wasn’t as skilled as Newt when handling them, but that’s probably because he wasn’t allowed to finish his fucking education because of racism that just never got addressed other than him being a fucking pity case.
