Film after film: Moneyboys (dir. C.B. Yim 2021)

This film irritated me while I was watching it, but then, in the end, I eventually liked it. The problem is plot machinations, those moments when the filmmakers decide to skip some events and focus on some others, yet without making comfortable shortcuts in how the protagonist got from point a to point b to point c. This happens here a few times, including, most irritatingly, the ending, but otherwise it's a gripping story, with a few great performances, especially by Kai Ko and Bai Yufan, whose dancing scene is easily the most effective.

My favorite things about this movie:

the INCREDIBLE acting, especially by aelm bhumibhat who's slowly becoming one of the best & most powerful thai actors in my eyes. ud awat & pae arak also ate this up bruh.

the directing & cinematography are so so so good, they remind me of p'nuchie anucha & apichatpong weerasethakul and I mean that in the best way.

this story is so impactful & I know I will remember it for years to come. this movie didn't go AT ALL where I thought it would at first, and I'm grateful because the last 30 minutes made it become a favorite for me.

super niche but this whole cast is crazy & I simply adore who they got to sign on this movie, like... pae arak??? that's insane, like literally insane. ud awat showed his whole ass twice & frankly? slay. the cast is too fucking good but that's just a me point bc you probably don't know them lol.

One Room Angel (2023) Episodes 1 & 2

Review: Aiyah! Rating: 6/10 so far

Summary - an Angel arrives into the life of a man with very little desire to live.

I had read and loved One Room Angel manga.

It is very cross-cultural: the white-clad angel from western-leaning Christianity and impermanence from Japanese-Buddhism.

Waiting for your beloved in the netherworld – I adore this trope. It gives so much meaning to the mundane act of passing away. Wait for me, my love. I will travel down the lane lined with higanbana to reach you. In after-life, lets reunite.

They did this before:

BL Metamorphosis (2022) – the older protagonist, Ichinoi Yuki, upon realizing that it will take a while for the BL manga to complete, turns to her husband’s memorial and asks his forgiveness saying she will be late to join him in afterlife as she wants to read till the manga's end.

 天神右翼 by 天籁纸鸢 - It has a good mix of western-Christian and eastern beliefs and traditions.

What I liked:

Angel

The actor is so good. He embodies the character from the manga so well. It is near perfect casting for an adaptation.

2. How low-budget the production is.

They showed the shopkeeper in different grabs instead of showing Kouki going from place to place in search of job. I am not a big fan of BL commercialization. I want BL to have the freedom to be created even by small production houses and creators.

3. How closely they are following the manga.

I like the adjustments they made.

4. Actor who portrays Kouki is growing on me.

He performs the characters little happiness very well.

What I didn’t like:

The narrative keeps saying Kouki looks scary… but where does he look scary?

I wanted a character like those from crime and yakuza movies. Guys who actually look scary. Not this ikemen. The actor was not up to mark in the first episode where he had to portray a scary appearance and demeanor. He is good at micro expressions of joy. He also looks good pleased, maybe a little too much.

Unfortunately, a thick character was adapted into a thin character (in fact thinner than angel). Kouki has gachi-muchi aesthetics in the manga, looked like a man from gei-comi (bara). I don’t like this casting choice. I have been waiting for a main character with gachi-muchi aesthetics for a long while now.

The closest we got – Framboise from Kabe Sa Doujin Sakka no Neko Yashiki-kun wa Shouninyokkyuu wo Kojiraseteiru (2022)

2.  What’s with such a nice room?

This is definitely not titular one room! I wanted the condition of the room to be like that of Liang Long’s room from Moneyboys (2021)– a room that look poor and pathetic.

Sadly, the Kouki's room is bigger than the identical apartments Nomoto and Kasuga had in Tsukuritai Onna to Tabetai Onna (2022). My ladies had such tiny one rooms!
