I feel so bad that I omit so much of my childhood lore from my own kids because it was wrought with abuse and neglect, something I never want them to experience.
When my daughters ask me to tell them something about my favorite experiences as a kid, I can feel that the look on my face trying to think back on anything *good* is just ripping up repressed memories in real time, a look I never let them see.
My wife will often step in and redirect them, but I can tell that I made them uncomfortable. I never want them to feel bad for asking me questions as I am usually an open book.
But I’m still just too raw, too damaged from what happened.
I can’t let them see what I really am.
