(Toledo, 6 MONTS BEFORE D-DAY)
Viserys takes a cautious step towards the board - smiling at his students. "Thank you for accepting this job offer," he humored, looking around the room and familiarizing himself with everyone's faces. Some were familiar like - Aegon, Aemond and Rhaenyra, but some were new like - you, Harwin and Mysaria.
"We'll be living here, for now - until the heist happens and it won't matter wherever you go." he smiled, turning back to the map on his hands. It was a map of Old Valyria (a city that was now filled with nuclear waste) but it was his home - his father's home - and their names will be built around that.
"I thought we were using planets da-I mean sir." Aegon raises his hand. "I was supposed to be Mars, and one-eye can be Uranus." he kicked the chair in front of him - earning a small chuckle from his uncle. "I don't want to be Uranus," Aemond rolls his eye.
"Why?" Aegon frowned.
"It's an anus." Aemond turned to look at him - nailing daggers on his brother's face. "Language! Young man." Viserys scolded, walking back to the board.
He reaches for the chalk, writing on the board what names were available for the choosing. "No one is allowed to use their real names - just in case someone gets captured and etcetera," he mumbled and the crowd erupts into a chorus of agreement.
It made absolute sense to stay anonymous.
Daemon turns to look at you - a mischievous glint on his eyes. "It makes sense," you mumble - playing with a pencil. Viserys turns to look at you - a smile was on his face. "Why don't you choose first?" he offered. There were interesting names on the board.
Lorath, Lys, Myr, Norvos - but Volantis felt right.
"Volantis," you answered quickly - and the man turns to offer other people their choices of names. Daemon wraps his arms around your waist, leaning closer towards your ears. "The oldest and the proudest of all the Nine Free Cities. But Volantis has changed its name - it's Thessaloniki now." he whispered.
Viserys glares at his brother - seeing the closeness between you.
"- and you?" he raised an eyebrow.
Daemon reaches his full height.
"Rhyos. I am Rhyos."
That was the day you started calling yourself Volantis. The man beside you who was ogling at your breasts was Rhyos or Daemon. His face was familiar - you've seen him in the television - from millions of pounds to diamonds to armored cars. He's the biggest criminal in Europe and Asia. He was a fucking shark - but anyone can swim with him, you'd just feel nervous all the time.
The other guy who was staring at Mysaria's ass was Aegon or Norvos. He's not that big of a criminal - but he's wanted for stealing one of the Ambani Family's treasured jewelry. There's a saying 'Steal from the poor and they'll vote you for the next election. Steal from the rich, and they'll bite your ass.'
The guy in front of him was Aemond or Lorath. He went to jail at sixteen for leaking an unreleased episode of his favorite show - pretty much a rookie as the episode was getting aired the following day. Fuck, Game of Thrones eh?
Then there's that beautiful woman a few inches away from you. Her name was Rhaenyra - she is yet to choose a codename, but everyone already knows who she is. She used to be a model in the '00s. The most beautiful woman in the world - was what they called her. Until she was caught laundering billions of euros - she would've gotten away with it if her step-father didn't rat her out.
She's your role model. Your barbie, basically.
And the reason for why you know all of them?
You spend a lot of time reading the news.
(D-DAY 8.35 AM)
Six months of planning and it was reaching fruition. "Hands where I can see them!" you yell, pointing it at the truck driver. The first step of the plan was getting the unmarked paper bills to the Royal Mint.
"If someone calls the radio, you will answer like there is nothing wrong, okay?." Daemon briefed, pacing back and forth between the men - exuding his confident aura.
This was one of the few moments you were thankful for the minimum wage. These men were paid 1,600 euros per month - thus they didn't care whether or not their cars were getting hijacked. If their daughters were in the trunk, they wouldn't have opened it - but paper? Darling, they couldn't have given a lesser fuck.
"Now, let's go." he turned to look at you - leading the team towards the hijacked cars. Mysaria hands you a blonde wig - fixing it on while you settle the seatbelt in between your breasts.
"Don't take your eyes off the girl, we can't afford mistakes." Daemon looks at you - holding your chin softly. He takes a moment - licking his lips, then moving back and tapping the car - telling Mysaria to drive away.
"Let's find the little lamb," Mysaria breathes - driving through the empty road swiftly. "Who even takes a field trip to a Royal Mint? It sounds boring," you slump on your chair, holding the seatbelt tightly as you cruise closer to the Mint.
"Boring when you're poor, but classy when you're rich." she replied.
Entering the Mint was easy - but finding the little lamb.
"Where the fuck is she?" Mysaria curses, opening all the bathroom stalls. "It's like a game of Where is Waldo," you sigh - pointing the gun at every door you open. "What?" she raised an eyebrow, unfamiliar with the game. "It's a game where you find this little guy in a striped shirt," you explain and she rolls her eyes.
"Where is the little lamb," she rephrased the game - smiling in satisfaction as she opened the last stall. Revealing Cersie Lannister.
"Thank the Seven," you breathed - grabbing the girl by her arm and dragging her to where all the hostages were. "I-I need my phone," the girl stuttered reaching for the Iphone on Mysaria's hands.
The older woman pulls it away.
"Influencers," you mumble like a slur - earning a glare from the child.
"My boyfriend took my phone and retweeted a fucking anti-climate change movement. I don't care if I die today - I will get cancelled." she cried, and you pointed a gun at her waist - making her cries harden. "Are you serious?" you frown, biting back a loud laugh.
Being cancelled was going to be the least of her worries.
Daemon removes his mask as the last hostage puts on a blindfold. "Happy Friday, I hope everyone has had the chance to go to do their novenas. I want to say sorry for what we're doing today, it's not a happy way to end your week. Follow our instructions and you'll be safe." he smiled, Aegon nods his head - telling him that all the phones were currently under control.
"I hope that you enjoy this experience - write a book about it in the future, it might get you into a good college. Harvard or Yale, they love their sob stories." he chuckled, playing with his rifle that he named 'Dark Sister.'
A groan escapes your mouth, pointing a pistol at an old man's head. "What's the fucking pin?" you cursed, holding his Samsung with your left hand. A tear rolls down the man's eye. "Pin?" you repeat in an annoyed way - knowing that this wasn't supposed to be your job.
Another tear falls down his eyes.
"0."
"0."
"0."
He lowered his head in shame.
"0." he whispered, and a small laugh exits your mouth.
"You were acting really smart with me - and your pin is 0000?" you tease him, throwing his phone down the other sacks of phone. "Anyways, no shame in that." you chuckle, taking a step away from him.
"All the phones are unlocked, Lorath - you know what to do."
Aemond nods - smiling at you.
(Toledo, 6-MONTHS BEFORE D-DAY)
"Do you know why I do this?" Rhaenyra slurred - laying on your bed while she stunk of whiskey and vodka. "- because I want my sons back. I want them back from their father - whose actually not their real father." she chuckled bitterly, feeling the tears fall from her irises.
She grabs into your collar - pulling you closer to her body.
"I know where they are - they're in America with their fake grandparents, and I'll get them back once I get the money." she swore to herself, ultimately mumbling their names before falling back asleep.

Money Heist: What to Know About the International TV Phenomenon
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
If you haven’t tuned into Money Heist yet, you’ve been missing one of the hottest series on Netflix right now. It’s sexy, absurdist fun, an action soap opera like no other, so addictively bingeable that it has stolen the hearts of a worldwide audience. But it’s more than escapist fare. Money Heist has also become a rallying cry of resistance that is changing the world.
It almost didn’t happen. Netflix picked up Money Heist entirely by chance. If they hadn’t, the original series might have easily vanished into obscurity for English-speaking audiences. Once Netflix got it, it blew up and became their most watched non-English series.
Money Heist was originally broadcast on Spain’s Antena 3 channel in 2017 under its native title La Casa de Papel (The House of Paper). The first season was 15 episodes, told in two parts. The initial part garnered a healthy 45 million viewers but viewership plummeted when the second part was broadcast. With only half the audience remaining and the story complete, the show seemed at its end. Netflix acquired the series as part of an international catalog of titles, re-edited it into 22 shorter episodes, re-released it internationally later that year. The streamer didn’t even bother to promote it when they added to their queue. Nevertheless, it found a huge audience outside of Spain and viewership skyrocketed.
Season 1 is about a meticulously planned heist of the Royal Mint of Spain. The Professor (Álvaro Morte) is a criminal mastermind who assembles a gang of thieves. Each thief adopts the name of a city to conceal their true identities from each other, akin to the robbers in Reservoir Dogs. The story is told from the perspective of Tokyo (Úrsula Corberó), a brazen spitfire femme fatale who steals every scene she’s in. The thieves capture the Mint, taking dozens of hostages. Their plan is to print millions in unmarked bills. Meanwhile, the Professor plays a cat-and-mouse game with Inspector Murillo (Itziar Ituño) who is hot on his trail.
Don’t Fall in Love During a Heist
Through Tokyo’s narration and copious flashbacks to the planning of the crime, Money Heist tells a gripping story of the ultimate anti-heroes. As tensions mount, the gang is at one another’s throats while navigating the Professor’s deceptive instructions. The Mint is surrounded by cops and time is running out. Gratuitous shots of ticking clocks increase the pressure, the same device deployed by original Mission: Impossible TV series to heighten suspense. Stockholm syndrome takes hold as the hostages fall for their captors. In classic Money Heist style, the main hostage who joins the gang adopts the name “Stockholm (Esther Acebo)”. The Professor and the Inspector engage in a deliciously dysfunctional romance. It’s all exceedingly sexy with the beautiful actors often scantily clad, and has a subversively sharp sense of humor.
Despite its ludicrousness, Money Heist is so addictive in many ways. First off, it masters the cliffhanger. The suspense is relentlessly palpable and no matter how ridiculous some of the deus ex machina resolutions are, they’re still great fun to watch. Just like Game of Thrones, this show is merciless. Beloved main characters die in shockingly poignant death scenes. This keeps the suspense very real. You never know if your favorite character is going to make it. Of the seven thieves that enter the Mint with Tokyo – Berlin (Pedro Alonso), Denver (Jaime Lorente), Helsinki (Darko Perić), Moscow (Paco Tous), Nairobi (Alba Flores), Oslo (Roberto Garcia Ruiz) and Rio (Miguel Herrán) – three don’t make it out.
Secondly, it’s about those characters. The ensemble cast delivers great performances across the board. Every role is rich, complex, and well-developed. Everyone has his or her strengths, weaknesses, and back stories and their emotional journeys resonate deeply. No one is entirely innocent. You can’t help yourself from rooting for them, even the villains.
And third, Money Heist has style. Its passionate soundtrack has captured the ears of the world. The use of color, particularly red against darkly composed frames, is exquisitely captivating. Money Heist is a thrilling roller coaster ride that just has to be experienced.
Enjoy It Until the Party is Over
The global following shocked the cast and crew. After season 1 wrapped, the show seemed finished. As the cast watched their social media following grow exponentially (an experience catalogued in Netflix’s documentary, Money Heist: The Phenomenon), they knew something was up. By 2018, Money Heist garnered several nominations and wins across the European awards circuit and even won the coveted Best Drama Series at the 46th International Emmys.
Consequently, Netflix reassembled the cast and crew for a second season, this time with a much bigger budget. Even though season 1 was self-contained, the show’s creator Álex Pina dreamed up a second season, one that was on a much grander scale, thanks to Netflix’s backing.
The second heist is in four parts. That may sound confusing because the upcoming season 5 will be split into two parts as well. Season 5 is actually parts 3 and 4 of the second heist story arc. “Heist 2” is already 16 episodes deep and it’s only the halfway point.
For the second heist, the gang must reassemble to rescue one of their own after Tokyo makes another grievous mistake. And that rescue hinges upon robbing the Bank of Spain. New gang members join the survivors of the first robbery, and another more ruthless adversary, the pregnant Inspector Sierra (Najwa Nimri). Sierra is a more ruthless opponent than Murillo was for the first heist. When it comes to the Professor’s psychological chess game, Sierra flips the chess board upside down. Season 3 (Part 1 of the Bank of Spain heist) debuted exclusively on Netflix in the summer of 2019. Season 4 (Part 2) was released almost a year later in April 2020, and it was seen by 65 million households. That’s a million more viewers than watched Tiger King when it ran around the same time.
Realizing they had a bankable hit, Netflix released Money Heist: The Phenomenon. The documentary showcases the astonishment of the cast and crew as they navigate their new found popularity from a show they thought was done. A season 2 opening scene, filmed in front of the historic Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral in Florence, Italy, was almost ruined when rabid fans rushed the crew. However, do not watch Money Heist: The Phenomenon before seeing the show because it drops some major spoilers.
We Are Dali
To hide their identities, the gang wears masks based on the famous Spanish surrealist artist Salvador Dali, replete with a red hooded jumpsuit. They force their hostages to wear the same costume to confuse the police. This Dali mask has become a new symbol of international rebellion, supplanting the Guy Fawkes mask from V for Vendetta on a global scale. Beyond Comic-Con cosplaying, the Dali mask has been appearing on protestors and in effigies around the world. Footage from these real life demonstrations appear in the show.
Money Heist has had a profound effect on international football (“soccer” for we Yanks). Massive displays of Dali mask banners appeared at Saudi Arabia soccer stadiums. At the Karaiskaki Stadium, Greek soccer fans unfurled a huge Dali banner too. After their team won, they rushed the field wearing Money Heist costumes. Brazilian soccer superstar Neymar de Silva even makes a cameo in season 3 as a monk who wryly comments about his disdain for soccer. Silva claims Money Heist is his favorite show.
There were even real life copycat heists. France fell victim to a shop hold-up and a hotel robbery where the perpetrators wore Dali masks. A 2019 daylight heist of the Mexican Mint was thought to have been inspired by the show. Perhaps the best one was when Justin Bieber’s five-billion-view music video ‘Despacito’ was hacked on YouTube. The hackers replaced it with an image of Money Heist in full Dali regalia with guns pointing out, accompanied by a call to ‘Free Palestine.’
Consequently, there has been some backlash. Cyprus banned Dali costumes for Carnival. Turkish journalists and politicians have admonished the show, describing it as rebel propaganda. The Professor describes it best in season 3. “The mask has become a symbol throughout the world of resistance, of indignations, of skepticism. It doesn’t matter. What matters is that it has inspired many people.”
Ironically, Money Heist pilfered Dali’s image. The Gala-Salvador Dalí Foundation never gave the show its blessing for the use of the artist’s likeness. There’s no doubt that Dali is spinning in his grave for not getting paid royalties, but he must appreciate the surrealism here.
Bella Ciao!
Beyond the now iconic Dali mask, Money Heist also revived a rebel ballad, the Italian protest song Bella Ciao. Bella Ciao means ‘Goodbye Beautiful’ and it was the anthem of anti-fascists of the Italian Resistance during WWII. Originally about toiling in rice fields under an oppressive boss, the lyrics evolved to describe the Resistance’s commitment to the cause with their lives. When translated from Italian, the lyrics end with “This is the flower of the partisan who died for freedom.”
The Professor’s grandfather fought in the Italian resistance so he sings it with Berlin, his older brother, and teaches it to the gang. The song is frequently reprised throughout the series, most tellingly during the season 1 part 1 finale end credits. A montage of black-and-white footage decrying the evils of money fades to red as Bella Ciao plays.
Since Money Heist, over a dozen new versions of Bella Ciao have climbed the charts across Europe, with the Professor’s rendition placing first in Austria, second in Germany, and in the top twenty in Belgium, France, and Switzerland. It’s been covered by several EDM DJs like Steve Aoki and Hardwell. Bella Ciao has become a common chant at soccer matches, and was heard at the 2019 World Cup. When Open Arms rescued a boatload of fleeing immigrants docked in Lampedusa, the refugees sang Bella Ciao to celebrate their newfound freedom.
The Last Times are Beyond Comparison
What might the finale hold? When we last left the gang, they were reunited in the Bank of Spain and determined to win ‘the war’ in honor of their latest fallen comrade. But Inspector Sierra got the drop on the Professor. With a gun to his head, she declared “Checkmate, son of a bitch.” Anyone who knows the show understands that it is volatile and unpredictable so it’s anyone’s guess what happens next.
It’s clear that this is the end. When production wrapped on May 14th, Netflix tweeted “Thank you to all the fans for being part of La Resistencia! We can’t wait to show you how this story ends.” However, Netflix is never one to kill a goose that lays golden eggs.
Money Heist creator Álex Pina already launched another Netflix series, Sky Rojo. Season 1 premiered back in March 2021 and season 2 is slated for July. It’s the story of three women on the run, somewhat reminiscent of Thelma and Louise, only the threesome are prostitutes. It’s stylish and sexy, and received some critical acclaim. But it has nowhere near the impact of Money Heist.
A Korean adaptation of Money Heist is in the works with Kim Hong-sun directing. Cast as the Professor is Yoo Ji Tae, who is most remembered for his mastermind role in Oldboy, and also had a part in a Korean TV adaptation of The Good Wife. Playing Tokyo will be Jeon Jong Seo, aka Rachel Jun, a newcomer with two feature films under her belt.
This summer, an immersive event “Money Heist: The Experience” is set to tour London, Miami, Mexico City, New York, and Paris. Each city will get a different version of the experience, adapted to the venue, and the venues won’t be announced until just prior to the events open. This is another collaboration between Netflix and Fever, who previously staged “Stranger Things: The Drive Into Experience” in Los Angeles.
Most of the cast of Money Heist were too engaged with filming the final season under pandemic restrictions to take on any new projects. The notable exception of Úrsula Corberó. Corberó is cast as the Baroness in the upcoming G.I. Joe Origins film, Snake Eyes.
Money Heist held the title of Netflix’s most watched non-English series until a French show, ironically also about a heist, stole the crown. Lupin robbed Money Heist of the title in January 2021 racking up 76 million views. Lupin Part 2 debuted on June 11. When Money Heist returns, will it steal back Netflix’s most watched non-English series crown? Hopefully so. For Nairobi!

Money Heist, Parts 1-4, are available on Netflix now. Season 5 Volume 1 debuts on September 3, Volume 2 arrives on December 3, 2021.

ariel mueller was born in amsterdam to a spanish mother and a german father , or so he thought he was his father but to this day he respects william more than hermes on any good day. his parents were con artists , thieves which is where ariel’s love for thievery began. ariel lived his whole life with a set of rules so he’d never get caught , but no matter what ariel just seemed to be impossible to catch , trace or anything that could remotely get him caught. it definitely wasn’t good for the ego , which he had from an extremely young age. however, his father wasn’t so lucky and would often go in and out of jail while his mother would stay watching the young boy. in that time he’d grow close to his mom as she taught him how to gamble and do sleight of hand ---- you know , normal things for young boys.
their life in amsterdam wasn’t anything extraordinary , his dad was pulling in money by conning and began to teach alex how to fake cashier’s checks and other things at a very young age. after all , no one suspects a child of forgery. ariel went to regular public school , but was a very fast learner , but was kind of lazy. when he was about six he could remember weird people coming and going from their small home , they were always nice to him but he got curious. he was pretty handy with a bobby pin ( you would think that a con artist would be handier ) but ariel finally got to see the beginnings of the big plan and he was all in , but his parents didn’t know.
ariel’s thievery became more advanced the older he got and he began feeling watched about the age of ten , it was an odd feeling that he tended to ignore but it was still around. his hubris matched hermes , if not surpassed his but at the age of thirteen hermes finally made contact which confused ariel who went to confront his mother. she told him the truth and he felt conflicted and despite hermes’ offer to go to camp half blood ariel denied because he felt hurt he waited till the last year to make contact.
it wasn’t until he was seventeen , the summer after high school and before his eighteenth birthday that the big plan was finally set to take motion. the big plan was to produce and steal from the royal dutch mint. the heist started on a wednesday morning , his father didn’t want to deal with a large number of people. his father also didn’t let anyone know ariel was his father — for his safety and assigned everyone roman gods and goddess names his own being jupiter and ariel’s being mercury. things went smoothly and not so smoothly , but they all managed to get out relatively safely with millions of dollars split between the six of them until things went south and his father got caught whale ariel once again got away and he was resentful over the fact that he was safe and his father got sent to prison. his mother stayed home and when he appeared she urged him to go to eonia since hermes had told her his hubris was getting out of control.
so he went to eonia at nineteen, his mother thought he would have done accounting or business but for some reason he was always attracted to the stars. he always did his best work at night and loved learning about astronomy so he decided to become an astrophysics major which he excels at.
Quick Facts:
he’s a leo — do i need to say more? he’s actually really chill , but is also a little shit raised by a con artist so he knows how to please people.
loves to sing a little too loudly in the shower and play air guitar. He knows how to play actual guitar and cello.
he has major hoe vibez, i feel it
has a very quick mind, almost has eidetic memory but also forgets to take his daily vitamins do i don’t know how that would work
he’s not mad at his dad, he loves him with all his heart, has no problems with loving people — he just doesn’t want to because his heart was broken as a teenager.
but also has commitment issues and an identity crisis almost every month but he keeps those to himself
the heist he was involved in and his capture was really big internationally and only relatively big in the u.s so someone is bound to recognize him
he also thinks he’s always right and is probably more beautiful than aphrodite’s kids and he has no problem telling you.
Connections:
fwb
friends who love space too
fellow thieves / criminals
someone to be a good influence
someone who he can be a bad influence to
an ex that lasted like a week max
his platonic soulmate
literally anything pls and thx

Money Heist: The Real Reason The Robbers Have City Names
Money Heist is one of the most liked shows of Netflix. And the characters of the show have geographic codenames. Although later in the show, their backstories and names were revealed, the Professor assigned city codenames to his team members in the first place. Even officer Raquel Murillo who later joined the heist was also given the city name Lisbon. In this article, we will try to find out the reason why the robbers were assigned city names?
Money Heist is a Spanish heist crime drama series originally named La Casa de Papel (The House of Paper). Alex Pina creates the television series. The series was initially planned to be of two seasons. The original show in Spanish has 15 episodes on Antena 3. The original version aired from 2nd May 2017 to 23rd November 2017. Netflix later streamed the show in 2017. Show creator then re-cut the series into 22 episodes and released the series worldwide from 20th December 2017 to 6th April 2018. Netflix renewed the show with a moderately increased budget for 16 episodes. The third season of the series was eight episodes and released on 19th July 2019. The fourth season came out on 3rd April 2020 with eight episodes. And in July 2020 the team of Money Heists began their production work of the fifth season.
The shooting of the series took place in Madrid, Spain. Few sequences of the show were filmed in Thailand, Italy, and Panama. Money Heist is the story from the perspective of a woman named, Tokyo, played by Ursula Corbero. The show was a great hit and widely accepted and appreciated by audiences and critics. It has won 46th International Emmy Awards. The Italian anti-fascist song “Bella ciao” became a chat-buster which was played multiple times in the show.
La casa de Papel is set in Madrid, a mysterious man known as “Professor”, who recruited eight people and gave them code names after cities to execute a heist in the Royal Mint of Spain. The team captured 67 people for 11 days to print money and escaped with €2.4 billion. The group then hid to save themselves from police and found themselves preparing for the second heist.
The idea of the series is conceived by director Jesus Colmenar and screenwriter Alex Pina during their collaboration for a project in 2008. After finishing their project of the Spanish prison drama named Vis a vis (Locked up). They left the studio of Globomedia and started their own company named Vancouver Media in the year 2016. They planned to keep the series limited as the ratings of their previous show dropped due to the delusion of the story. The team decided the first project will be either comedy or a heist story. The show was initially titled as Los Desahuciados (The Evicted) during the conception phase, and it was developed with combined elements of thriller, surrealism, and action genres. Pina found an advantage for heist movies, as the characters in the series can have multiple sides to break the preconceptions of the audiences. The initial storyline of the show was pretty good, but the extraordinary story beats failed to impress the writers. To make the story up to the mark, writer Javier Gomez Santander tried to go deeper into the thoughts of the character Professor, he also consulted engineers who he could not tell why he asked them that.
The shooting of the series started in January 2017 after five-month pre-production. For financial consideration, the story was split into two parts. Although the code name of the robbers was based on city names, it was assumed to be inspired from 1992 Quentin Tarantino’s heist film titled Reservoir Dogs. The creators shared that to write the first five lines of the show took them months to final, as it was challenging to make Moscow or Professor as narrator. In the end, Tokyo was presented as an unreliable narrator to make the story more fluid.
The casting for the show started in late 2016 and took more than two months to finalize the actors for the respective roles. The Professor’s character was written beautifully as a charismatic yet shy person who could convince the rest of the robbers to follow him and also able to make the viewers sympathetic to the robbers’ actions.
In the cast of the Professor, the producer initially wanted to cast Javier Gutierrez, but he was busy with his film Campeones. The casting director cast Alvaro Morte for the role later, who was famous for his soap opera El Secreto de Puente Viejo. The actor shared that the character was full of surprises, and he enjoyed revealing every fold of the character.
The show was directed by Jesus Colmenar, created by Alex Pina, and the cinematographer of the series was La Vanguardia. Salvador Dali was chosen for the famous heist mask of the show since Dali is an iconic cultural reference to Spain. The idea of the city names of the team members was cool, and it also helped the writer to create subtle suspense to grow the characters slowly and efficiently. However, in the series Professor named his team in city code names to secure the anonymity of the crew from the police. The Professor was planning the big heist of the Royal Mint for years, and he had ensured that every part of it was safe for the plan and his teammates. He also planned it in such a way that no crew knew each other and had personal attachments. However, the plan did not stand out very well as Moscow insisted on bringing his son in the plan; Helsinki and Oslo were cousins, and Rio and Tokyo started a romantic relationship. And the Professor broke his own rule by including his brother Berlin.
In an interview with Lifestyle Magazine the showrunner of the show Money Heist, Alex Pin revealed that the team’s code names based on cities were random. Initially, they were planning to keep the names after planets. And when someone turned up one day wearing a T-shirt with the word Tokyo, that’s how it started. Professor had chosen city names to mislead the police while the process of analyzing them. The crew belonged to different places around the world, and the name of the city is not corresponding to their origin. The naming pattern is a little unconventional for Monica, who was named “Stockholm” due to the speculation of Stockholm Syndrome. However, more than any practical reason, the city names were cool and catchy. In a typical crime movie or show the nicknames generate suspense around the character like in Reservoir Dogs’ as Mr. Pink and Mr. Blue. We are hoping Money Heist season 5 will provide us with some more insights and real names of Bogota and Marseille.

Money Heist Season 4 Recap: For Nairobi!
https://ift.tt/2Yf0gmN
The following contains spoilers for Money Heist season 4.
If there’s one thing that can be said about Money Heist, it’s that it’s been a wild ride. Even the way the show got popular was crazy. The original Spanish series, La Casa de Papel (literally translated as “the house of paper”), was cancelled after one season. But when Netflix picked it up, the show blew up. It blew up like an exploding bank vault with a resounding boom that was heard all around the world. The show became the most watched non-English series on Netflix, not to mention a global symbol of resistance.
Calling the upcoming bulk of episodes the fifth season can be a bit confusing, as the show’s story structure is different from the traditional TV model. Money Heist masters the cliffhanger, and all the season divisions just intensify that. There have only been two heists and we’re still in the middle of the second one. The first heist was the original series: the Royal Mint of Spain caper, told in two parts. That comprised seasons 1 and 2. The second heist is the robbery of the Bank of Spain. It had Netflix Bank, so its production budget is much fatter. The Bank of Spain heist is being told in four parts. Seasons 3 and 4 comprise the first half of that heist. The upcoming Season 5, Part 1 will be followed by a Season 5, Part 2 slated for this December. Only then will we find out if the gang gets away with it.
Before things get rolling again, let’s look back at where season 4 left us…
Lisbon rejoined the gang
After being captured at the beginning of season 3, Lisbon (Itziar Ituño) spent most of season 4 illegally detained and under brutal interrogation by the ruthless Inspector Sierra (Najwa Nimri). In the season 4 finale, the Professor (Álvaro Morte) stages a daring escape to free Lisbon. And with even more elaborate play, he orchestrates getting her inside the Bank of Spain to reunite with the gang.
Given that the gang seems hopelessly surrounded in the bank, it seems ridiculous that Lisbon would want to go there. However, it’s important to remember that Lisbon began on the opposite side. In season 1, she was Inspector Murillo in charge of investigating the heist. She flipped to the gang’s side out of her love for the Professor.
Lisbon had a lot to prove to the gang. Despite spending most of her time apart from them, she was accepted because the Professor accepted her. Her confrontations with Sierra will surely escalate as the former Inspector-turned-bank-robber goes head-to-head with the new inspector. And now that she’s in full cahoots with the gang, the cleverness she’s demonstrated throughout the entire series will certainly level up the intrigue.

The gang still needs to get the gold
The plan is to melt the gold down to transport out of the bank. According to Lisbon’s stalling-tactic testimony, 50 tons of gold are melted down already. That leaves 40 more to go, little past the halfway point, which coincides with where the series is. Seasons 3 and 4 were 8 episodes each. Seasons 5 and 6 are shorter with only 5 episodes per season.
While the gang succeeded with the first heist despite impossible odds, nothing is ever certain when it comes to Money Heist. Jesús Colmenar, the producer of Money Heist, promises that this is the final battle where they pull out all the stops. “I can tell you for sure that this is the biggest and the most thrilling one,” teases Colmenar.
Is Gandia still alive?
Season 3 introduced Gandia (José Manuel Poga), the head of security for the Bank of Spain and the most despised villain of the series. A former black ops agent, he’s highly skilled in stealth combat. He strangled Helsinki (Darko Perić), and held Tokyo (Úrsula Corberó) captive, but his greatest offense is what he did to Nairobi (Alba Flores). The gang used him as a ruse to get Lisbon in the bank, but during the chaos, he tried to break free. Helsinki (Darko Perić) stopped him by smashing his head into the staircase rail, but it’s unclear whether he killed him or just knocked him out. If he did die, it was an understated death scene for Money Heist.
Although some fans theorize that Gandia is dead, it’s more likely he survived. The season 5 trailer teases a scene of Tokyo (Úrsula Corberó) kicking a bloodied Gandia, but trailers can be deceiving. Knowing how Money Heist constantly ups the ante, Gandia will surely take advantage again somehow. He’s too wicked of a villain to ignore.
New gang members
The second heist introduced several new gang members and conspirators. There was the squad of Asturian miners tunneled to the garage to break out Lisbon, led by Moscow’s (Paco Tous) friend, Benjamín (Ramón Agirre). However, the most interesting new gang member Benjamín’s daughter. She is on the inside and she just came into play in a big way.
Manila (Belén Cuesta) was introduced in season 3 as a childhood friend of Denver’s (Jaime Lorente) that was recruited to be an undercover hostage. But when Denver knew her, she was Juan. She’s transgender. Sor far, she’s been in the background, snitching on the hostages to the gang. But that changed in the season 4 finale when she blew her cover to shoot hostage and former director of the Royal Mint, Arturo (Enrique Arce). Now that she’s outed, Manila can add to the gang’s complexity.
Arturo had it coming. Arturo has emerged as even more despicable than when he was having an affair with his secretary and got her pregnant in season 1. She flipped to join the gang after she fell for Denver, adopting the most appropriate alias of the gang, Stockholm (Mónica Gaztambide). In season 3, Arturo drugs and rapes Amanda (Olalla Hernández) one of the other hostages. He tries the same with Manila, but she was on to him.
Sierra got the drop on the Professor
After Colonel Tamayo (Fernando Cayo) threw Sierra under the bus saying she had to take the blame for the bank heist fiasco, she went rogue and managed to track down the Professor on her own. She declared ‘checkmate’ when she found his hideout and had him at gunpoint.
For Sierra, it’s been a personal battle. She’s obsessed with winning the psychological chess game with the Professor and been the only investigator that has had a clue about his deceptiveness. Is it mood swings from her pregnancy? Or is she just psycho that way?
One thing is very probable. Sierra is very pregnant. And knowing Money Heist, she’ll go into labor at a critical point. That’s been an imminent gamechanger from the beginning of season 3. It’s just a matter of when. Will it be season 5 or season 6?
For Nairobi!
Nairobi had a tough season 4. She began on a makeshift operating table after Sierra had lured her to the window using her son as bait, and then ordered a sniper shoot her in the chest. Incredibly (well, not so incredible for the absurd plot twists of Money Heist) Nairobi recovered, thanks to Tokyo’s nascent surgery skills.
But then Gandia caught Nairobi and tortured her, tying her to a door and mercilessly shooting her in the hand. Then, just as the gang had negotiated her release, Gandia shot Nairobi in the head. There’s no coming back from that, no matter how lucky Tokyo is as a surgeon. Her coffin bearing the words ‘La Puta Ama’ (the fucking boss) was carried out of the bank with more respect than any of the deaths preceding her.
Gandia’s kill shot went right into the gut of every fan. Nairobi was a beloved character. Coming from poor roots, she was a single mom and the most kindhearted member of the gang. When Lisbon finally reunites with the gang at the season 4 finale, they chant “For Nairobi!” in a scene that sends chills down the spine of every Money Heist fan.
Will this be the end of Nairobi? Berlin (Pedro Alonso) sacrificed his life so the gang could escape at the end of the first heist but returned in flashbacks in seasons 3 and 4. Although Nairobi is clearly dead, her memory lives on, and hopefully we’ll see more of her. For Nairobi!

Money Heist Season 5, Volume 1 comes to Netflix on September 3. Volume 2 is slated for December 3.

How Money Heist Uses Music
SEASON FOUR SPOILER ALERT!
I have watched Money Heist religiously since season one. It’s one of the most amazing pieces of art I’ve witnessed. It’s written beautifully, the cinematography is clean, crisp and aesthetically pleasing at all times, the characters are portrayed in such a raw way; we see their flaws and love them nonetheless. After four seasons, they feel like our family too. But yesterday as I sat down to binge watch the latest season, from the first episode I could tell that something was different... and it all began when Berlin opened his mouth and sang.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K3xtWk9VJ5s
For those of you who live under a rock, or simply don’t appreciate the finer things in life, Money Heist or La Casa De Papel is a Spanish television heist crime drama series. It’s told from the perspective of our badass female protagonist, Tokyo. A man called The Professor has assembled a team of eight people, all code-named after various cities, to rob the Royal Mint of Spain. The plan is well thought out and we see things progress in real time. What’s even more amazing is that we are on their side. We want them to get away! The heist is a heist for the people, a revolt against the government. There are allusions to Robin Hood where the gang gives money to the poor and so they’re supported by the public. The themes that we see are anti-fascism, anti-capitalism, and just plain resistance. We also see themes of passion like love, friendship and betrayal. If you’ve seen the show, you know how important music was in the first seasons. Case in Point: Bella Ciao.
Everybody who has seen this show, knows this song. Bella Ciao encompasses everything that the show is about. It is an Italian protest song that was modified and adopted as an anthem of the anti-fascist resistance by the Italian partisans between 1943 and 1945 during the Italian Resistance. One of the first times we hear it is in a scene between The Professor and his brother, Berlin, while discussing the plan for the heist. The song feels like hope. It rings of freedom. It quickly became a fan favorite and an “anthem” of sorts. It is simple, catchy and the feeling that rises in you when you sing, becomes infectious. So, the story has always been connected to music but this season was done differently. Let me explain.
Everybody loves Latin music. Show me someone that doesn’t want to gyrate their hips and take shots of tequila when they hear Latin music and I’ll show you a psychopath. Just the fact that Money Heist is a Spanish television show, they were destined to greatness where any soundtrack was concerned. The theme song “My Life is Going On” by Cecilia Krull is sung in English which is interesting because the music used in Seasons 1 and 2 are Primarily Spanish. Don’t get me wrong, there are English songs mixed in there but it predominately is Spanish sung. In Seasons 1 and 2 the music is also scarce compared to 3 and 4. In this article is shows exactly what music was used. But the question is about how the music is being used.
In the earlier seasons they used music mostly to set the mood and color of the scenes. When using the song Bella Ciao, it was personal to the Professor and Berlin who had learned it from a grandparent. From then, it was adapted to the whole gang who now use it as their personal anthem for resistance. I believe that the soundtrack is developing with the characters as the seasons go by. It’s becoming more personal to them through the use of diegetic music.
Diegetic Music is a big term that literally means that the music is part of the fictional setting and so, presumably, is heard by the characters.
Diegetic = heard by the characters, for example Bella Ciao & Ti Amo (the song Berlin sings for his wife)
Non- diegetic= My Life is Going On (Theme Song), the music that the characters do not hear.
For Seasons 3 & 4 there was definitely a bigger budget and more attention paid to the musical selections but there was definitely increased use in diegetic music. We hear Van Morrison’s Days Like This in S4 E2 with Palermo getting ready and we know that the music is heard by him because he sings along (making it diegetic). This song choice is abnormal for the Money Heist that we knew in seasons 1 and 2. It’s not sung in Spanish and it’s not Latin either but it gives the scene a depth to it. Music itself is a Universal language and no matter race, ethnicity or nationality we all understand what the scene is saying, through the music. The tool of irony is being used as well. The music in itself is hopeful and Van Morrison sings about better days but the team isn’t in the best place. One of their own is captured and being questioned by the police . It weirdly makes the scene feel nostalgic and it’s just one of the scenes that really stood out to me while watching it.
Another great example of diegetic music in Season 4 is when in Episode 5, Nairobi goes to encourage the workers in the forge that are melting the gold and we hear “Fuego by Bomba Estereo”. She has the music played in speakers while the workers work and we see her sing the beat of the song. The song sounds personal to Nairobi and her character. It sounds like her. The choice of music in this scene represents Nairobi and her presence in the Forge, how she motivates and takes charge of the men. She asks them to perform their tasks with rhythm! The music has now represented the character.
There are many more examples of how the music is used brilliantly but the real prime moment of awe for me was Nairobi’s death in S4 E6. Damian Rice’s Delicate? It smashed me to pieces emotionally. This is non-diegetic music, the characters themselves have no idea the music is playing. Just like with Days Like This, the song is neither Latin nor sung in Spanish but because of the universality of music, most people understand what is going on subconsciously. Rice’s woeful voice, the slow tempo of the song and heavy use of strings? We know instantly that this is painful. We are visually seeing a beloved character dead and audibly we hear a musical expression of the team’s pain. We see them crying and bawling but we actually don’t hear them. The song that is playing is expressing everything the Director wants us to feel in that moment.
I could go on and give infinite more examples of when Money Heist had made the right choices regarding music, but then this blog post would be entirely too long. I was born into a family of musicians and have played music for most of my life. So, when a film or television show has done amazing work and placed thought into the creation of an audible landscape that keeps audiences engaged and interested, I have to stan! Hats off to the composers Manel SantistebanIván and Martínez Lacámara for a job well done especially the evolutions from season to season, which they have handled well.
WE’RE READY FOR SEASON FIVE, NETFLIX!
Love, Lafiya.
