Sonic Unleashed would've been better as an inertia based, 3D physics platformer. In the day stages.
Not in an "I don't like the boost gameplay" kind of way, it's not my favorite but Unleashed and Gens are still good games, I mean for the sake of consistency of control. You teach the player in Windmill Isle how Sonic controls in this one, X to boost, A to jump, B to stomp/slide, LB/RB to side step, LT/RT to drift. Sonic controls like a tank you have to use these tools to guide him like a missile through reaction challenges in 3D, and platforming challenges in 2D. There's more to it, but that's the core right?
Ok, now forget literally all of that because the only thing we're keeping from any of it is that A is jump. Here's a God of War-esque combat system with...weirdly good 3D platforming sections and light, Adventure 1-esque puzzle solving?
Ok, now give Day Sonic the same level of 3D control as the Werehog and his basic mechanics from the Adventure games, polished up a little so scripted loops and corkscrews aren't necessary, then make the transition. NOW, it feels less like you're playing 2 separate games stapled together, and instead, you're playing 1 game which changes up its pacing with puzzle solving and combat mechanics. Aside from Unleashed level themes just seeming really fun to do Sonic style physics platforming in, it makes the whole package more cohesive, the night stages becoming an extension of the gameplay of the day stages, rather than something fundamentally different from the other half of the game.
Generations would benefit from a change like this too, though at least there, there's a conceptual reason to differentiate them mechanically, you want to really emphasize the difference between Modern and Classic Sonic, so one gets the Unleashed style boost mechanics, and one gets an admittedly VERY imperfect take on the 2D style physics gameplay. If the Modern stages were essentially 3D takes on the classic inertia gameplay, they'd get to JUST BE 3D, with none of the 2.5D stuff to allow Modern Sonic to do actual platforming challenges, which would mean Classic stages would have more meaning as the only parts of the game that play out in 2D.
Been watching gameplay from Sonic Dream Team, and it got me thinking about the good boost games (my feelings on Colors are complicated, but mostly middling to negative, and I would murder Forces with my bare hands if it were a person). Sort of killed most of my excitement for the gameplay of it, but on the bright side, the presentation elements all seem to be top notch and it still looks to be a solid take on the boost gameplay, sort of demonstrating even better than Frontiers did that THAT type of gameplay works a lot better when you give the player full 360 degrees of movement and good control over the camera.
It's just not a physics based Sonic game, so I care a lot less, and feel a lot less bad about not being able to play it without Apple stuff. Might pick it up anyway if it gets ported to Switch, to satiate my curiosity and get a more thorough understanding of it for discussion purposes.

How do you create so much beauty with so much confidence? My anxiety always makes me freeze up even if I have a great idea.
here's the secret: it's not confidence at all. in fact i'm extremely anxious myself, and i have very low self esteem. this place of "confidence" doesn't exist. confidence is a feeling that comes and goes. but you can choose to be brave in any situation. and courage comes from taking action, not before.
and the point imo is to choose to love the idea more than you feel anxious about it. and you have to do it on purpose, you have to love it on purpose, over and over again, despite all the bad feelings, despite all the voices telling you to stop. you have to choose to love your idea MORE than you're afraid of it.
this comes through being open and flexible with your expectations btw. you have to open your arms to the idea. you have to embrace it like you really mean it.
the "solution" to anxiety is love. love your idea. trust that the process of making it, even if it doesn't turn out how you expected, will take you somewhere beautiful still. it's worth it.
everything. every so-called failed project. every idea never acted upon. everything. all of it. it's all worth it, i promise.

A little over a month ago, @atomicsuperrobot reblogged some of my old pony art and said they missed it, which made me feel quite nostalgic and keen to do some again. I was abroad at the time, but it's been on my mind ever since. So this week I found some 10x15cm watercolour paper lying round (matching what I drew many of the old pieces on) and decided on Heart Throb to mark the dawn of February. She turned out a little messy, but it was fun to relive the process! ^_^

100 days of productivity
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
starting 25th October 2023 ending 2nd February 2024
Rules
Success or failure -- just show up
No #ZeroDays -- No matter how hard it feels, do a little thing, a bare minimum. Don't let any day become a zero day
Do at least one PhD-related task everyday
Read a journal article everyday. Skim, AIC, full workout - anything
Weekends are excluded, but counted -- because rest is productive
Learn & practice mindfulness
Take two pictures everyday to represent the day (post them here)
Accountability
Daily update of task list here. Perfection is the enemy of done. So don't overthink, just post - even if it feels half-baked.
-----
I’m currently in the final quarter of my PhD. I feel quite demotivated and I find it hard to gain momentum. So I thought I'll take up an accountability challenge to help me stay motivated and eventually build a routine.
If you are already doing a 100 days of productivity challenge, or would like to take on one, please do comment/like this post. I'd love to have some company and inspiration! Please help me find similar accounts! <3

Hamiltonian mechanics is the feminine side of classical physics. Its masculine side is Lagrangian mechanics, formulated in terms of velocities (tangent vectors) rather than momenta (cotangent vectors). Lagrangian mechanics focusses on the difference of kinetic – potential energies; Hamiltonian mechanics focusses on their sum.
Richard Montgomery, reviewing a book by Stephanie Frank Singer and recalling lectures by Shing-Shen Chern

Once again i did notes (for my fics) instead of working on the very important work i have to do but this time its ok because i meant to take off today and rest anyway.
and besides i did something i had always wanted to do since fricken 2019!
I DID A POWER SCALE FOR THE MP100 ESPERS!!!
As you can see im still missing the 7th division claw members and the awakening lab kids (and others) buts its ok because i did the most important ones!
(also those missing are all around the same level anyway)
As i watched mp100 I ve always classified the espers in 5 categories(excluding mobs own) depending of their abilities in my mind which i put on the side and also they way i understand their powers (aka telepaths/seers/spiritists behaving differently)
(or at least the way i see all of this)
i included notes explainning why i put them the way i did (good luck understanding them) and even how their powers grew during the story!
even thought ive had this cale in my mind for years i never realized how much ritsu grows in it! (even though i did him so dirty lmao)
i made this mostly as a handy reference for myself but if you want to use it feel free to do it (ñ
or to askme if you are curious about anything!
... Except why Teru and Shou got extra lines... I don't even know it myself I just know they make sense
(I think besides their first appearance im also marking their status as of the world dominatiom arc and at the end of the story (dotted lines are the leaves they reach when pushed to their limits... Not recommended))
dunno when ill get to finish this but when i do it ill update it here or maybe in another post and link it... who knows
Edit: although I named the zone "can copy others special techniques" it doesn't necessarily has to be copied.
That zone actually is "can use more than 1 specialized technique".
I put "copy" because I believe each techquine is innate to some psychic somewhere and while yeah you could come up with a technique on your own different than the one you already have I think it's easier to do it once you see someone else doing it. Aka easier to copy techniques than to create them yourselves.
Copying techniques isn't that easy either (remember the scale is exponential) which is why Teru being able to do it on the spot is so remarkable and says a lot about his level of power.

Have to admit, watching skaters do knee slides or otherwise get down on the ice as part of their choreography and bounce back up without looking like their knees and backs are going to self-destruct is far more impressive than any jump.

Of all the things I want to be reading and shows to be catching up on, instead I've fallen into a Leverage Redemption rewatch. AND, somehow, a Stargate Universe rewatch. my TBR pile is huge (i love it but ahhh). my fic is just gonna stay over there in the pile of wips for the moment. to-read fic tabs remain tucked away. just so depleted for nearly everything. all this burnout, the chronic stress is awful and demoralizing. and it doesn't help when an insurance company will also show up and be like "no we're not gonna approve this thing we've always approved before" and probably cost me more money in the long run. this whole month has been awful in quiet, exhausting ways. things happening outside my control, people treating me less than well. It's a lot. I managed to do a little painting last weekend. I should try to do some more this afternoon. I also have a million more things to share about my art and fic wip stuff but the energies are not there for posting, despite the spirit wanting it so. more yen/freya ficcy goodness later. This weekend I've managed to work on a Monkey Man vid. I've been obsessed with the movie since I watched it earlier this month. The film is pretty much the only thing my brain has any active hiccups about since it hits pretty much every button I Have. Which I'm glad there is something for my brain to gnaw on while I reboot, but I'll probably have to let that go dark to continue resting soon, too. I have a minimum of 3 Monkey Man vids planned, possibly 4. But not even sure if I'll manage them in this state. But the first one is pretty much done. I'm still trying to let it sit in my poor, exhausted brain, and see if it feels finished enough for what it is. Vidding right now is just like playing with a little visual rubiks cube or fidget toy, and that rubiks cube is comprised of dev patel's big brown wet eyes. covered in blood. everything snapping into place visually and musically, very satisfying. that's it, that's the post. burnout sucks and I love Monkey Man and my idiosyncratic Stargate Universe feelings remain unchanged after a decade and I love watching Sophie lead the crew on Leverage Redemption.
