Abi Gezunt was released in 1938 in the Polish film Mamale, but the Barry Sisters (US artists, given names Minnie and Clara Bagelman) recorded their version in 1957:

I love the Barry Sisters version. For comparison, here's the 1938 original, performed by Molly Picon (US actor, given name Malka Opiekun) in the Polish film Mamale:

You've probably seen Molly Picon perform before. She played Yente the matchmaker in the 1971 film version of Fiddler on the Roof.

FIDDLER ON THE ROOF 1971
As the good book says, when a poor man eats a chicken, one of them is sick. Well, it doesn't say that exactly, but somewhere there is something about a chicken.

Chanukka is not the Jewish version of Christmas. There is no "Jewish version of Christmas." (There is an Ashki equivalent of Twelfth Night, and that's יידל מיטן פידל )
Happy first day of the war on Christmas everyone
Yearly reminder to gentiles that
1. Jews do not recognize Jesus as anything but a human man who probably existed in some capacity at some point
2. We do not celebrate his birthday. He is just some guy to us.
3. It is not a personal attack on you if we don’t celebrate your favorite holiday.
4. Chanukah is not the most important Jewish holiday, its just the only one you know by name because it happens roughly around Christmas time.
5. You can say or do whatever you want, we just think you’re annoying. At the end of the day, you’re still gonna get school or work off on Christmas and Easter while I have to chose between my religion and my schoolwork every year on Yom Kippur and Rosh Hashanah.
6. You are not the victim. However, unfortunately you are usually the main character.

My main thoughts during this DS9 rewatch can be distilled down to "Armin Shimerman consistently gives the best performances on DS9, using the whole body as an instrument"
#Well he's neck in neck with Avery Brooks obviously but. Those two guys are carrying the show sometimes holy shit#Meyerhold shit! He's on that Meyerhold shit!#He would do numbers as a combination Yiddish/Polish theater actor during the interwar period#He would do NUMBERS in the cabaret#I want to see Armin Shimerman doing 1920s Expressionist theater I would Die#I want to see him acting opposite Molly Picon

🇺🇸 Located at Jean Jaurès 746 in Buenos Aires, the Society of Jewish Actors was established in the 1930s by Jewish actors fleeing poverty and fascism in Poland. This space functioned as a union and a mutual aid organization, providing loans, support during tough times, and funeral arrangements for actors. It became a hub for Jewish theater, closely tied to the AMIA building on Pasteur Street, tragically destroyed in the 1994 bombing. Luminaries like Maurice Schwartz, Molly Picon, and Jacob Ben-Ami graced its stage. Among local icons, singer and actress Rosita Londner celebrated Jewish culture with her husband, Henri Gerro, a renowned actor and Yiddish performer who arrived in Argentina in 1951. Thanks to institutions like AMIA, the Society remains active, preserving Jewish culture through theater and music.

I feel like most people today, if they have any idea who Molly Picon was, think of her as Yenta the shadchn in the movie of Fiddler on the Roof. I always think that must have been a weird role for her to play, because as a younger woman, she was a giant star of actual Yiddish movies, including quite a few set in the kind of shtetl that Anatevka evokes. She also performed in the Yiddish theater, on the radio, and on Broadway, and she was known as a comedienne.
A better translation for the title of this song would be “Believe It Or Not,” and can’t you just see Molly Picon performing this at some cabaret somewhere in New York? Maybe Sophie Tucker is there as well, ready to bring the house down after this comic interlude with a raunchy torch song.
