Happy #MesozoicMonday / #MolluscMonday / #MarineBiologyMonday / #ScienceMonday! We call the Mesozoic the Age of Reptiles, but don't forget about ammonites! These beautiful shells housed a nautilus-looking cephalopod named after the Egyptian god Ammon due to their resemblance to Ammon's coiled ram horns. Ammonite fossils span the globe in abundance and range from pea sized to a span of the height of a human! Specimen on display @thankspoint #paleontology #science #usofscience #fossil #fossils #biology #zoology #animal #animals #geology #marinebiology #ammonite #sea #ocean #prehistoric #thanksgivingpoint #museumofancientlife #museum #saltlakecity #utah #cephalopod #mollusk (at Museum of Ancient Life at Thanksgiving Point)

It's #MolluscMonday, everyone!
Today we celebrate with some designs inspired by snails, clams, and cephalopods, including our classic piece The Creation of Squadam.

Happy #MolluscMonday / #ScienceMonday! I'm sure you are all familiar with the legendary "Megalodon" shark, but did you know that calling it that is scientifically and taxonomically inaccurate? Why? Because the shark is really called Carcharodon megalodon (sometimes called Carcharocles megalodon). So, you call it by both names. After first calling it by the binomial designation, you are allowed to abbreviate; as in, C. megalodon. C. is the genus, it's always capitalized, and "megalodon" is the species, never capitalized. So, calling it "Megalodon" is like saying, look at sapiens, the human, hurr durr! It makes no sense taxonomically. It's called Homo sapiens! So what does this all have to do with mollusks? When you say simply "Megalodon," you are describing the genus of clam! Yes! Behold! The mighty 40, or maybe 60, or maybe 80 (unlikely though) foot long shark is...a clam? Accuracy and terminology matters, people! C. megalodon is a shark; Megalodon is a mollusc! Enjoy beautiful drawings of Megalodon the mollusc here in the epic research volumes, Treatise on Invertebrate Paleontology, Part N, Volume 2, pages N742-N749, found in the paleontology collections library @nhmu. Also, real paleo nerds might recognize the music. Test your paleo nerd might and guess! This has been another educational message from The Spencer. #paleontology #science #usofscience #dinosaur #dinosaurs #fossil #fossils #biology #zoology #nhmu #museum #naturalhistorymuseumofutah #utah #saltlakecity #naturalhistorymuseum #mollusc #shark #sharks #megalodon #animal #animals #geology (at Natural History Museum of Utah)

This #MolluscMonday, I have a slug that can friggin swim. Yeah, it's a slug that pretends to be a fish—and it even glows because some slugs like to be extra lavish.

Halloween might be over, but this candy-pink nudibranch is here to brighten up your #MolluscMonday. Though it looks eye-catching, its coloration actually camouflages the animal well between the branches of shocking-pink corals. #sciart

YAY #MolluscMonday! Help the Chambered #nautilus by not purchasing their beautiful shells. They're in danger of extinction because of overfishing FOR their shells. Photo taken at @MorrillHallUNL. #lovedtodeath #museumcollections #itweetmuseums

Happy #MolluscMonday from Parapuzosia seppenradensis, the LARGEST KNOWN AMMONITE! This huge specimen, on display on the second floor @nhmla, is a copy of the original specimen housed at the Museum für Naturekunde in Münster, Germany. Secret: It's missing a coil, which would have made it even larger!
