♪ It's time for Fish Mollusc Fact Friday♪
The common blanket octopus is so named for the large, blanket-like iridescent webbing found between their arms - this webbing can be stretched out to give the octopus a larger silhouette, which can be used to scare away predators. However, only female blanket octopuses possess this webbing!
Male and female blanket octopuses are drastically different in appearance; females can grow to around 2m (6 ft) in size, while males only grow to around 2.5cm (1 in) long. (Imagine a fridge vs a paperclip for scale!)
Most interestingly, blanket octopuses are immune to the venom of the Portugese man o' war! Males and immature females use this to their advantage - they rip out the stinging tentacles of the man o' war, which they can then use against prey and predators!
#it's pretty mesmerising to watch them swim!#perhaps I should start a mollusc monday?#fish fact friday#my art#marine biology#octopus#blanket octopus#mollusc

MONDAY'S MOLLUSC: Parapuzosia
This is Parapuzosia seppenradensis, the largest known species of ammonite in the world.
They are 1.8 m or 5.9 ft across and that that one wasn't even complete! The living chamber was missing a chunk so it's even bigger!
It lived during the Campanian Epoch of the Late Cretaceous Period in what is now Europe and North America where the Western Interior Seaway was located.
They were pelagic predators, probably feeding on fish,
squid,
other ammonites,
and even marine reptiles if they could catch them
all while evading adult mosasaurs who definitely had them on the menu.

Monday 17th of July, 2023 | 28th day
Hihihi! It's very late right now but today was nice!
I went to the library as I promised but I didn't do french (at least I kept a half of my promises)
I got 3 books at the library: one is a novel because I've been wanting to read one for so long (well, a month or so), another one is a math book because I've also been meaning to read one and the last one is an encyclopedia on molluscs because I saw it and thought it would be cool to read and I actually started to read a little already.
I also have got back in contact with two people today (wow). One was a friend from 3 years ago which I kind of just lost contact with when she graduated and another one is a girl from my school which I haven't talked to since the summer started because I didn't really know how to, plus she's spending the whole summer at a different country. That's it for today!

Fossil Friday: Brachiopods
Brachiopods are any interesting animals. They look like clams and other bivalves but are more closely related to cuttlefish.
6 of the 8 families of brachiopods existed in the Ordovician Period. Here's a few of the brachiopods you'll find in Ordovician rocks:
Platystrophia
Herbertella
Rafinesquina
Where did brachiopods come from? Well, one hypothesis, the "brachiopod fold" hypothesis suggests that brachiopods evolved from an ancestor similar to Halkieria, a slug-like animal with "chain mail" on its back and a shell at the front and rear end. The hypothesis proposes that the first brachiopod converted its shells into a pair of valves by folding the rear part of its body under its front.
Halkeria
However, fossils from 2007 onwards have supported a new interpretation of the Early-Cambrian tommotiids, and a new hypothesis that brachiopods evolved from tommotiids.
Studies seem to suggest that Halkeria is closer to molluscs while tommotiids are more closely related to brachiopods.
Sadly, at the end of the Paleozoic, 2/3 of the brachiopods wet extinct and they haven't been the same since. Knoll and Bambach concluded that brachiopods were one of several groups that were most vulnerable to the Permian–Triassic extinction, as all had calcareous hard parts (made of calcium carbonate) and had low metabolic rates and weak respiratory systems.
Today, there are three classes of brachiopods left: Lingulata,
Craniata,
and Rhynchonellata.
Tune in Monday to learn about an extraterrestrial event that occurred in the Ordovician Period. Fossilize you later!
