a lot of ink has been spilled about how the sharpest minds of our time are wasted on optimizing ad-clicking algorithms and doing absurd Wall Street arbitrage games, and that is in fact all a mighty shame
but you know who gets let off too easy? doctors. and by that i mean: you realize that the top 0.1% of any given med school class went into dermatology & is now mostly shilling retinoids all day. fascinating phenomenon but also bleak as hell lol
#once i went to a derm with a precancerous mole and they told me they simply. did not do. mole removals. m'am that is your JOB#i had to find a plastic surgeon to do it because i could find any fucking derm who would do their damn job!!!#then later i needed some accutane and BOY HOWDY you bet suddenly that dermatologist wanted my money lol#(i mean the accutane was excellent! glad i had it! but IF I HAD TO CHOOSE...)

do i agree with the widespread commercialization of plastic surgery as a means to body shame people into getting expensive procedures they don’t need or that may be actively harmful to them in the long run? no. absolutely fucking not. i should not be seeing posters on the train treating a double chin (barely classifiable as such in the “before” picture) or a basic slight paunch (that’s where your organs are) or a wider-than-the-white-average nose or “skin discoloration” (usually white supremacism) as “problems” that need to be “solved” by shelling out hundreds or thousands of dollars to look like a magazine photo and trying to aesthetically “reverse aging” when 1) aging is a beautiful process that means you’re alive and 2) you’re barely pushing fucking 30, you hardly have crows feet/smile lines to erase anyway
HOWEVER this is a complaint about predatory advertising and systemic fatphobia, racism, and ageism being pushed by said predatory advertising, as is so horribly common in the “beauty industry” at every level. this is not a complaint about the people who get plastics or an indictment against them, or even the surgeons performing these procedures. the marketing of plastics as “make yourself more beautiful according to the narrow and ever fluctuating standard of white western aesthetics” rather than “make yourself more at home in the body you’re spending your entire life in, whether it fits beauty standards or not” is the problem i have
#i think that catman guy who had himself turned into a tiger via plastics and tats is a legend tbh#he gets it#ive GOTTEN plastics or at least was operated on by a surgeon who specialized in it#bc i had these weird moles on my back when i was 10#and my mom wanted to make sure i didn’t have fuckign skin cancer#and it was a plastic surgeon who removed them for the biopsy

RoP Ask Game! ♡: 10, 16, 21
Thanks to @fukutomichi for the ask!
Choose three characters. What jobs would they have if they lived in our time? Sauron. Online scammer with age old connections to international espionage and a former “It Boy” in the cybercrime community, Sauron is deep into a bunch of ongoing but poorly designed crypto scams, and is trying to run several AI bot farms concurrently, but because he is easily fooled by AI himself, his AI-generated content is not difficult to spot so he’s had little real success with it. To the point that a recent investor (Ar-Pharazôn, naturally) flew all the way from Numenor to Mordor just so he could point at some of Sauron’s AI generated profiles and shriek “Is that convincing!? No!” over and over again until Sauron was forced to throw him into the live volcano. Adar. Union organizer for a teachers’ association (in a US state where teachers are allowed to form unions). He was everybody’s favorite high school social studies teacher and football coach until an illness forced him to take early retirement. Some time after he recovered it was discovered that the building he worked in for 20 years had a serious black mold problem, so he went back to work to advocate for his colleagues, some of whom came down with the same illness, and is fighting the state to ensure that not only is the mold removed, but that the air quality is tested regularly and any health-related expenses incurred as a result of the town’s mold disaster are covered in full. The battle is still ongoing. Celebrimbor. As a nanobiotechnology scientist, Celebrimbor was focused on developing surgical nanobots that could be deployed in emergency situations to act as autonomous on-site surgeons for first responders like firefighters and EMTs when moving an injured person before surgery would have resulted in more harm or even in death. It was meant to be his legacy. He left that behind after a mole from Gorthaur Industries stole some of his proprietary technology, corrupted and repurposed it into a weapon that was meant to temporarily immobilize protestors, but caused almost instant death due to extreme vascular damage after it was used against a peaceful protest that included a few thousand innocent people, many of whom were under 18. He had a breakdown when he learned the extent of the harm Gorthaur caused, but later rallied to fight back and help bring Gorthaur to justice. He eventually returned to the industry, but as a consultant, and travels throughout Arda to lecture on the ethics of nanotech.
Name three characters that have dog energy and three that have cat energy. Hmm. Three dog-energy characters: the Stranger/Gandalf, both Durins, Isildur! Three cat-energy characters: Galadriel, Celebrimbor, and Elrond! The elves seem to have cat energy by default for some reason.
Based on the various dinner scenes we have seen so far, to whose table would you most like to be invited as a guest? I would be a guest at Disa and Durin’s, no question. There's just something about that place! I love everything about their home and I think the food and hospitality would be on another level.

Trafalgar Law x Reader Medical Darkfic
Summary: Law is a surgeon who meets GN!reader on his operating table. He quickly becomes obsessed and wants nothing more than for them to be completely dependant on him. Forever.
Word count: ~1400
Warnings: Medical procedures/inaccuracies, toxic relationship, disturbed Law. (Please let me know if I need to add any other warnings)
A/n: Reader is 18+! This is just the prologue to a fic i've been working on but kind of abandoned for awhile. Each chapter would be a medical procedure that Law would be doing to 'reader' to make them more dependant on him. This is my first darkfic, so i'm open to criticism, and let me know if it's worth picking up again. Enjoy :)
Prologue
When Trafalgar Law graduated from medical school, he took the Hippocratic oath “primum non nocere.” The words were said in unison, resembling an echo of a cultist’s mantra as the former students all rose from their seats and swore as physicians to ‘first, do no harm.’
Bullshit, Law thought, what an unrealistic and hypocritical oath to believe in. He spent too many endless nights wrist-deep in someone else’s blood and bone to have faith in a saying against the surgeon’s scalpel. He plays God under the guide of fluorescent halos, performing miracles as if this gift of healing was bestowed upon him in divine right.
It doesn’t matter who is placed on his table, only that their life rests fragile in his hands and under his knife. He would be lying if he says it doesn’t excite him—the thrill of life at his mercy lying unconscious beneath him. Unable to fight back as he pulls them apart, piece by piece he retracts their ribs and their very essence of life stares back at him. It begs him to spare them, to save them, and each time he gets a choice.
It’s impossible to save them all—or so the hospital thinks. Law loves making the final choice, to save or not to save. Either way he has access to an endless supply of new patients, each more trusting and vulnerable than the last. The more ill the more pliant, begging on their knees if they could, always so willing to throw away all morality at the cost of self-preservation. But it wasn’t enough, it could never be enough. He needed more.
Then you were brought to his table.
There had been an accident north of the hospital, witnesses said a car had been run off the road by a large truck. A side rail had speared through the driver, but you were still clinging to life when the fire department arrived.
The rail had been sawed off so the paramedics could remove you from the car. A metal chunk still pierced your chest when you were laid out on Law’s table.
The surgeon removed the rail and dove into the cavity, scalpel in hand as he worked to remove splintered bone and debris. He slowly carved into tissue and muscle, focused on digging his way to the heart. The process was meticulous work but rewarding all the more when your heart was revealed to him.
He put his scalpel down and carefully wrapped his hand around the muscle, cupping it, ignoring everything around him. It pulsated beautifully in his palm, and the doctor turned to face his patient.
Your skin, every flaw, every freckle, and every mole was seen as flawless. Your eyelashes, long and delicate gracing your cheeks. Your lips gorgeously stretched around the tube inserted deep in your throat, and Law savored the sight—the body before him was no less than a delicacy.
The doctor reluctantly turned his attention back to your heart when the beating started to slow. He released the muscle and held his hand out for a fresh scalpel to continue the operation. You would be one of the lucky ones, your heart strong and fighting despite unconscious.
Only hours later did the surgeon pick up a needle and thread to begin sewing you back together. Usually, he left the tedious work to his subordinates, but Law wanted to be the one to close the wound. After his final knot and snip, the surgery was completed, and you were brought to intensive care.
You spent eleven days in the ICU, the first two of which you slept through in their entirety.
Law liked to visit you between his rounds, and he kept note of the little things, like how your lips dried out from constantly being put on and taken off the ventilator.
When you woke up, you were stuck in a state of catatonia for days, unresponsive in your thousand-yard stare as Law approached you. He stared at you, then pulled a tin of lip balm from his lab coat. He opened it, scooped a fair amount onto his finger, cupped your jaw with his free hand, and applied the soothing balm to your lips.
You both continued like that for three days, the surgeon stopped more and more often to apply balm to your lips, give you an extra dose of morphine, or simply sit by your bed, watching you sleep or stare at the opposite wall. It took a week for you to pull yourself out of the state of shock you had been in. On the ninth day, you smiled at Law, telling the surgeon how grateful you wereLaw wasn’t the same after that.
Days turned to weeks and Law continued his visits, even when you were moved from intensive care. Over time, Law’s obsession continued to grow and intensify, penetrating him deeper, no patient had ever been as thankful as you. So trusting and pure as you. He didn’t want to see you go.
It was on the day of your discharge, and the doctor spent the entire morning feeling ill. After a month in the hospital, you had become his light, and Law was not going to let this light slip so easily from his grasp. As you were at the front desk checking out, Law watched from around the corner, listening as you laughed and talked freely with the people around you. As the nurse was handing you the final paperwork to sign, Law approached.
"Law!" was yelled so fondly as you flung yourself into the surgeon’s arms. When you finally let go, you grabbed the doctor’s hands and asked the doctor on a date as a thank you for taking care of you. Law accepted with a smile.
Six months pass and you are fully healed, physically at least. After five months of dating, you happily move in with Law, making yourself at home.
You slowly grew independent from Law and into your usual routine of things pre-accident. You’re always at work or hanging out with your friends and it had the other clenching his teeth. Law tries to be accommodating with how much time you’re allowed to spend away from him, but it isn’t enough for you. Nothing is ever enough for you anymore.
It isn’t until you come down with a strong strand of the flu that you rely on Law again, resembling the you that Law loves most. The surgeon takes off work to be with his partner, taking your temperature every few hours, spoon-feeding you soup for lunch and dinner, and even walking with you to the bathroom to make sure you don’t fall. Law loves the way your cheeks are flushed red with fever, how you sigh happily when placed in a cooling bath, and how close you snuggle to the surgeon while shivering in your sleep.
Everything is perfect again until you start feeling better. After a week of being under the weather, you kiss Law's cheek, sweetly thanking him for taking care of you again. You continue saying you’re feeling much better despite Law’s protests, unable to stay away from work any longer.
The surgeon watches helplessly as you drive to work and is out of his grasp again.
He drives to work in silence, finally slamming his fist on the dashboard while sitting in the hospital’s parking lot. You can’t be tied down; did you know how frustrating that was for him?
Law silently does his rounds, brooding and nursing a cup of black coffee as he mulls over how to keep his light from disappearing.
It’s midday when he finds himself sitting in his office signing off on prescriptions. A blank slip falls from the pile and onto the floor, fluttering down and landing by his foot. The doctor bends down to grab the slip but stops. The pen in his hand grows heavy, tempting him.
Law was by no means a man of ethics, but even he knew this would turn disastrous if he was caught. However, losing you was on the line, and there was nothing the surgeon wouldn’t do for you.
He doesn’t think twice, picking up the slip and writing your full name next to ‘patient’s name.’ He no longer had to worry about tying his angel down, he only needed to clip your wings. You would thank him in the long run, Law only ever has your best interest in mind.

On July 1st 1505 the seal granted by Edinburgh Town Council to the Incorporation of Barbers and Surgeons to practise their craft.
The barbers in Edinburgh were associated from an early date with the surgeons of the town, and the two were united in a single Incorporation of Surgeons and Barbers in 1505.
Over the course of the seventeenth century splits formed between the ‘simple barbers’, ‘barber-chirurgians’ and ‘chirurgians’. Despite a long association, the barbers would feel increasingly marginalised, with their privileges and scope of their work curtailed by the surgeons, including office-bearing in the Incorporation and their barbering restricted to the suburbs.
The surgeons would formally strengthen their position in 1694 when the terms of the Seal of Cause were redefined., this new ratification, being confirmed in Parliament in 1695, gave the surgeons “full power over all persons exercising surgery, pharmacy or barbery within the bounds of the city of Edinburgh”.
Moreover, whereas the barbers had previously held the same rights of surgeons, they were now ignored completely in favour of the apothecaries, thereby creating the ‘surgeon-apothecary’. As such, the barbers had neither any say in the administration of the Incorporation, nor were they entitled to benefit from the fees they contributed as members.
Resentments caused by such loss of control through unequal division of governing power climaxed in 1722, when the Barbers formally separated from the Incorporation by decree of the Court of Session. The same year saw the formation of the Society of Barbers of Edinburgh (sometimes known as the Corporation of Barbers). The Society of Barbers ceased its operations in 1922. In addition to shaving and hair-cutting, some barbers (but not all) were also wigmakers. Some of them could dress wounds, lance boils, remove moles, warts and fistulas, bleed their customers (intentionally or otherwise), extract teeth and apply leeches. They also sold perfumes and toiletries to help make ends meet.
The Incorporation of Barbers and Surgeons is now known as the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

The post-op
So, off to a full day of doctors and labs. The surgeon is happy with the gradual closure of the incision and thinks another week will see the end of needing to irrigate, swab and pack. The drainage is less, and there's less blood. If the infection had broken inward instead of outward, I'd be dead of sepsis. I did the right thing, but I also got very lucky.
I had my labs done - six tubes only! I am always happy to see my nurses and they were pissed that I had an infection. They said there was no excuse for it. I'm inclined to agree. I've been through a lot of surgeries and there has never been an infection in any of my many incisions. It was a staphylococcus infection, according to the cultures.
The final post-op report says that the margins of the area they removed were clean, no significant changes to the nearby nodes. The tissue is being sequenced so if/when it pops up again that immunological treatments will be ready for the next round of whack-a-mole. The clock is reset, and in three months if I have a clean CT+PET in September, I will be back in remission.
Around and around and around we go.

every person on reddit: if its a face mole you have to get it removed by a plastic surgeon or you will ruin your face forever. don't worry it will be under $1000 and most moles are between $100-500 to get removed
me: ok thats expensive but I understand and I hate this mole. and this will be the third doctor I've asked about the mole in 5 years
the very nice doctor: yeah that will be one billion dollars

There are so many mods for making surgery less ridiculous, because it's one of the few things in the game that basically everyone agrees kinda sucks. The world's best surgeon in the best medical facility has an 0.5% chance to instantly kill somebody while trying to remove a cancerous mole from their ass. The only reason I don't have one installed right now is that I already have a medical overhaul mod and have never felt like sorting out the conflicts.
