I haven’t quite been keeping up with this blog like I’d intended, but part of that is because I haven’t really had the time. It’s been two weeks since I put the “dirt” in Lucifer’s tank, and I’m learning pretty quickly what I should and shouldn’t do. I definitely intend to let the next batch dry out a bit more, and I’m definitely adding some vinegar to hopefully help with mold. I’m also planning to add a tank topper, which is going to likely solve a large part of the mold issue by allowing me to keep certain items out of the substrate (pro-tip: no alfalfa in dirt). I’m also definitely planning to get more cork, which is really nothing new, but it’s apparently virtually mold-proof. I’d originally intended to change out the substrate once a month, but I had multiple water bottle failures, which dumped 4 ounces into the dirt each time, resulting in a lot more moisture than I was comfortable with, so I put in new substrate during this week’s cleaning. I also learned that one brick of Eco Earth is plenty for the current set-up, and that I absolutely should split the moss BEFORE I rehydrate, but I also purchased a lidded trash can that’s big enough to do 2 batches in at once, for when I get the topper on and can add a few more inches.
