Um texto sobre independência (ao menos parcial) de redes comerciais e sua intersecção com valores queer.

Talvez quem tenha lido o texto tenha percebido que eu não mencionei o Tumblr nem como plataforma de blog e nem como rede social convencional. Esta foi uma decisão proposital.

Tumblr é peculiar em relação a essa divisão: é uma plataforma que permite algumas personalizações e categorizações (por exemplo, é possível pesquisar só por uma tag em um blog específico ou fazer páginas compilando recursos), mas também é uma rede social comercial.

Já vimos alguns passos que me deixam desconfiade em relação ao Tumblr: há incentivos maiores para fazer conta/baixar o aplicativo do que haviam anteriormente, e acho possível que, no futuro, a plataforma tente bloquear completamente acesso a blogs pra quem não tem conta, caso isso dê mais lucro. As opções de personalização também estão diminuindo com o passar do tempo.

Tumblr também é uma companhia que passou por múltiplas empresas, e não é impossível que seja vendida novamente. Enquanto isso, projetos como Dreamwidth e Neocities possuem ao menos algum comprometimento com não serem produtos à venda.

Acho que, pra quem quer disponibilizar informações (sobre um certo grupo de identidades, como listas de bandeiras, como listas de links, etc.), um formato de site estático ou de wiki pode ser mais apropriado e fácil de navegar do que tags. Isso não significa que postagens não possam ser feitas no Tumblr sobre essas coisas, mas, se a intenção não é só priorizar o que é recente, pode ser interessante ter ao menos a opção de visualizar as informações em outro formato.

A lot of people come to me and admit they don’t really understand how can [identity] exist, or they doubt that identity’s need for existence, or they think it’s problematic somehow because it’s affected by something, or fluid, or simply “looks stereotypical”.

To a certain degree, it can be understandable.

Most people operate on the idea that “real genders” need to have a body or at least presentation appearance that’s related to them. That gender and orientation are things you are born with and can’t change.

That you either “like” one of the binary genders or another, and maybe it’s acceptable to “like” “both” or none, but most people aren’t used to more complex orientations, or to orientations that include nonbinary people (and not just nonbinary people who don’t mind being considered similar to a binary gender).

That you can judge people’s pronouns, gender and sometimes even orientation based on appearances.

So when someone comes across a polygenderflux or xenogender or varioriented or a-spec or diamoric person for the first time, it may seem like that isn’t a thing, or that there’s no need for that to be a thing.

But what confuses me is that it’s usually just a matter of... seeing whoever identifies as those things as people. Trying to think that there must be a reason for someone to identify as something that’s already seen as bad or at least confusing, and that’s already less familiar to most people.

Like, if a label can supposedly be replaced by a more common one, it’s very likely the person knows that most common one already, but wants a more specific label. Maybe they don’t feel fully comfortable identifying as that other one because that identity is usually described in a way that’s different from their experience. Maybe the person is unsure if their experience really fits that other label. Maybe this person’s experience has been doubted upon by people with the more common label. Maybe the person just wants to convey a more specific experience with their label.

And it’s not any kind of threat to your own identity, even if you could specify more than you do. Even if you think that if you were in that person’s shoes you would prefer the more common label. There’s nothing wrong with coining new words, most identities have to be looked up so people outside the community understand them anyways. There’s nothing wrong with not knowing every existing word.

If a label depends on external circumstances (gender affected by autism, orientation affected by trauma, etc.), these are those people’s experiences. They feel more comfortable describing them as that. Maybe some of those people will eventually feel no need for those labels, or be in a different state of being and feel their experiences are different then. But not all of those people will, and regardless, if a label is comfortable for someone, it’s pretty shitty and ineffective to say “NO go use this one”. What would you feel if someone else had another perspective on your identity and decided it was problematic?

You don’t need to understand what every gender or orientation experience fully entails. You don’t need to describe your gender or orientation with as much details as possible if you don’t want to. But you need to understand that people who use labels you don’t like or have a bad gut reaction to are still people, and that they have reasons to feel like they should use those labels for themselves.

When you mock “microlabels” or “neogenders” or “mogais” or whatever, you are mocking people. And often it isn’t because their identities are actually harmful to anyone, but just because you aren’t used to people having uncommon perspectives regarding their identities. Before painting something as problematic because someone *could* use that in a shitty way, think about why someone would want to coin that label, and about if there are possibilities that label is being used in a harmless way.
