A year in illustration, 2023 edition (part one)

I am objectively very bad at visual art. I am bad at vision, period – I'm astigmatic, shortsighted, color blind, and often miss visual details others see. I can't even draw a stick-figure. To top things off, I have cataracts in both eyes and my book publishing/touring schedule is so intense that I keep having to reschedule the surgeries. But despite my vast visual deficits, I thoroughly enjoy making collages for this blog.

For many years now – decades – I've been illustrating my blog posts by mixing public domain and Creative Commons art with work that I can make a good fair use case for. As bad as art as I may be, all this practice has paid off. Call it unseemly, but I think I'm turning out some terrific illustrations – not all the time, but often enough.

And I liked reflecting on the year's art so much, I decided I'd do it again. Be sure to scroll to the bottom for some downloadables – freely usable images that I painstakingly cut up with the lasso tool in The Gimp.

The original AD&D hardcover cover art is seared into my psyche. For several years, there were few images I looked at so closely as these. When Hasbro pulled some world-beatingly sleazy stuff with the Open Gaming License, I knew just how to mod Dave Trampier's 'Eve Of Moloch' from the cover of the Players' Handbook. Thankfully, bigger nerds than me have identified all the fonts in the image, making the remix a doddle.

Even though I don't keep logs or collect any analytics, I can say with confidence that "Tiktok's Enshittification" was the most popular thing I published on Pluralistic this year. I mixed some public domain Brother's Grimm art, mixed with a classic caricature of Boss Tweed, and some very cheesy royalty-free/open access influencer graphics. To illustrate the idea of overcoming walking-the-plank fear (as a metaphor for writing when it feels like you suck) I mixed public domain stock of a plank, a high building and legs, along with a procedurally generated Matrix "code waterfall" and a vertiginous spiral ganked from a Heinz Bunse photo of a German office lobby.

Finding a tasteful way to illustrate a story about Johnson & Johnson losing a court case after it spent a generation tricking women into dusting their vulvas with asbestos-tainted talcum was a challenge. The tulip (featured in many public domain images) was a natural starting point. I mixed it with Jesse Wagstaff's image of a Burning Man dust-storm and Mike Mozart's shelf-shot of a J&J talcum bottle.

"Google's Chatbot Panic" is about Google's long history of being stampeded into doing stupid things because its competitors are doing them. Once it was Yahoo, now it's Bing. Tenniel's Tweedle Dee and Dum were a good starting point. I mixed in one of several Humpty Dumpty editorial cartoon images from 19th century political coverage that I painstakingly cut out with the lasso tool on a long plane-ride. This is one of my favorite Humpties, I just love the little 19th C businessmen trying to keep him from falling! I finished it off with HAL 9000's glowing red eye, my standard 'this is about AI' image, which I got from Cryteria's CC-licensed SVG.

When it came time to illustrate "Gig Work Is the Opposite of Steampunk," I found a public domain weaver's loft, and put one of Cryteria's HAL9000 eyes in the window. Magpie Killjoy's Steampunk Magazine poster, 'Love the Machine, Hate the Factory,' completed the look.

For the "small, non-profit school" that got used as an excuse to bail out Silicon Valley Bank, I brought back Humpty Dumpty, mixing him with a Hogwartsian castle, a brick wall texture, and an ornate, gilded frame. I love how this one came out. This Humpty was made for the SVB bailout.

The RESTRICT Act would have federally banned Tiktok – a proposal that was both technically unworkable and unconstitutional. I found an early 20th century editorial cartoon depicting Uncle Sam behind a fortress wall that was keeping a downtrodden refugee family out of America. I got rid of most of the family, giving the dad a Tiktok logo head, and I put Cryteria's HAL9000 eyes over each cannonmouth. Three Boss Tweed moneybag-head caricatures, adorned with Big Tech logos, rounded it out.

When Flickr took decisive action to purge the copyleft trolls who'd been abusing its platform, I knew I wanted to illustrate this with Lucifer being cast out of heaven, and the very best one of those comes from John Milton, who is conveniently well in the public domain. The Flickr logo suggested a bicolored streaming-light-of-heaven motif that just made it.

Old mainframe ads are a great source of stock for a "Computer Says No" image. And Congress being a public building, there are lots of federal (and hence public domain) images of its facade.

When I wrote about the Clarence Thomas/Harlan Crow bribery scandal, it was easy to find Mr. Kjetil Ree's great image of the Supreme Court building. Thomas being a federal judge, it was easy to find a government photo of his head, but it's impossible to find an image of him in robes at a decent resolution. Luckily, there are tons of other federal judges who've been photographed in their robes! Boss Tweed with the dollar-sign head was a great stand-in for Harlan Crow (no one knows what he looks like anyway). Gilding Thomas's robes was a simple matter of superimposing a gold texture and twiddling with the layers.

"Gig apps trap reverse centaurs in wage-stealing Skinner boxes" is one of my best titles. This is the post where I introduce the idea of "twiddling" as part of the theory of enshittification, and explain how it relates to "reverse centaurs" – people who assist machines, rather than the other way around. Finding a CC licensed modular synth was much harder than I thought, but I found Stephen Drake's image and stitched it into a mandala. Cutting out the horse's head for the reverse centaur was a lot of work (manes are a huuuuge pain in the ass), but I love how his head sits on the public domain high-viz-wearing warehouse worker's body I cut up (thanks, OSHA!). Seeing as this is an horrors-of-automation story, Cryteria's HAL9000 eyes make an appearance.

I link to this post explaining how to make good Mastodon threads at least once a week, so it's a good thing the graphic turned out so well. Close-cropping the threads from a public domain yarn tangle worked out great. Eugen Rochko's Mastodon logo was and is the only Affero-licensed image ever to appear on Pluralistic.

I spent hours on the sofa one night painstakingly cutting up and reassembling the cover art from a science fiction pulp. I have a folder full of color-corrected, high-rez scans from an 18th century anatomy textbook, and the cross-section head-and-brain is the best of the lot.

Those old French anatomical drawings are an endless source of delight to me. Take one cross-sectioned noggin, mix in an old PC mainboard, and a vector art illo of a virtuous cycle with some of Cryteria's HAL9000 eyes and you've got a great illustration of Google's brain-worms.

Ireland's privacy regulator is but a plaything in Big Tech's hand, but it's goddamned hard to find an open-access Garda car. I manually dressed some public domain car art in Garda livery, painstakingly tracing it over the panels. The (public domain) baby's knit cap really hides the seams from replacing the baby's head with HAL9000's eye.

Naked-guy-in-a-barrel bankruptcy images feel like something you can find in an old Collier's or Punch, but I came up snake-eyes and ended up frankensteining a naked body into a barrel for the George Washington crest on the Washington State flag. It came out well, but harvesting the body parts from old muscle-beach photos left George with some really big guns. I tried five different pairs of suspenders here before just drawing in black polyhedrons with little grey dots for rivets.

Illustrating Amazon's dominance over the EU coulda been easy – just stick Amazon 'A's in place of the yellow stars that form a ring on the EU flag. So I decided to riff on Plutarch's Alexander, out of lands to conquer. Rama's statue legs were nice and high-rez. I had my choice of public domain ruin images, though it was harder thank expected to find a good Amazon box as a plinth for those broken-off legs.

To depict a "data-driven dictatorship," I ganked elements of heavily beribboned Russian military dress uniforms, replacing the head with HAL9000's eye. I turned the foreground into the crowds from the Nuremberg rallies and filled the sky with Matrix code waterfall.

The best thing about analogizing DRM to demonic possession is the wealth of medieval artwork to choose from . Rockwell's self-portrait image is a classic; that made it a natural for a HAL9000-style remix about AI art. I put a bunch of time into chopping and remixing Rockwell's signature to give it that AI look, and added as many fingers as would fit on each hand.

Billed as The Spots, Frank Carter and the Sex Pistols played a secret show at The 100 Club in central London last Friday night. The performance prefaced their show at Royal Albert Hall last night for the Teenage Cancer Trust.

Green Day announced that they will play a free show at Los Angeles’ Palladium today, which will be featured in their upcoming movie New Years Rev. The band’s members, Billie Joe Armstrong, Tre Cool and Mike Dirnt, all serve as co-producers on the project.

The Jonas Brothers announced the details of their Living the Dream Tour, which will hit stadiums in honor of the band’s 20th anniversary. Joining them for the shows will be The All-American Rejects and Boys Like Girls.

Wargasm were revealed to be the headlining act for next month’s Emo Nite in London. The performance will take place at Steel Yard on April 11 before the band’s appearance at Slam Dunk Festival.

1. Bruce Springsteen: Darkness on the Edge of Town

Having to fight for three years to escape his slave-trade contract with his first manager wrung all the Dylan-inflected romance and wordplay out of his work. This is the mature Bruce writing of everyday life. This is his masterpiece.

2. Elvis Costello: My Aim is True

Blown away when I borrowed this from a high school classmate and heard the blend of rock/pop/soul hitched to the most entertaining turns of phrase I’d ever heard in rock music. I saw him on his 2019 tour—still crushing it!

3. The Wailers: Burnin’

The best album with the OG’s: Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer. I’m a big fan of Bob Marley’s later solo career, but it was better with all three.

4. Lucinda Williams: Car Wheels on a Gravel Road

Ever put an album on and every single song is perfect? This is such an album. If anyone asks you “what’s Americana music?” sit them down and make them listen to this album. Poetic, funny, heartwarming and heartbreaking. Oh—and amazingly tuneful as well!

5. The Who: Quadrophenia

The better of the Who's two rock operas because it deals with real life rather than fantasy. The four separate musical themes, the majestic set against the quiet, this is Townsend at his best. Daltrey’s voice carries the bombast without breaking. Plus, has any band ever written so lovingly and eloquently about their fan base? They were after all the Mods band of choice.

6. Marshall Crenshaw: self-titled

Another out of nowhere debut album that just made me flip out. I’m a sucker for power pop anyway—I just played this and sang along for weeks after picking this up. I got to see him play a bar in Syracuse a couple albums into his career- just brilliant live as well.

7. Van Morrison: Tupelo Honey

Probably one of the untypical discs of his career—steeped in the American folk rock he was immersed in while living in Woodstock, N.Y. But I happened across a copy just as I was falling in love with my now wife. The title track was going to be our first dance song at our wedding—but both of us were too shy to dance to a 7 minute song in front of everyone. It was the second song though!

8. Z.Z. Top: Tres Hombres

I picked this up early in high school, one of the first albums I bought on my own. Bluesy rock stomp. They are the perfect band—although the MTV era sometimes got a little too poppy and synth-heavy. But MTV doesn’t play music anymore and despite the recent passing of Dusty Hill, that li’l old band from Texas is still at it!

9. J. Geils Band: Full House Live

The greatest rock/soul/blues band not named the Rolling Stones. Peter Wolf is the frontman every frontman wishes they could be. And of course, do not forget Magic Dick on the lickin’ stick! I mean, c’mon—how much more rock and roll does it get than a harp player who is only identified as Magic Dick?

10. Little Feat: Waiting for Columbus

They paired the slightly off-kilter sensibilities of Lowell George, with a tour-hardened band and THEN threw in the Tower of Power horn section—this document of the band at its peak is just amazing. Even after all these years, I get a buzz when I hear the band’s a capella coming-to-the-stage rave up “Join the Band” diving into the announcer doing the call and response F-E-A-T! cheer. It is no surprise that this was the first album I bought when I got a component stereo system. It was also the very first CD I bought when I moved away from vinyl.

cheryl smiled at the lady working at the flower shop, sliding the money across the counter. she had decided that tonight was the night she confessed to veronica, and everything had to be perfect - which meant creating a bouquet especially for the singer. every flower had been hand-picked with their specific meanings in mind. with that sorted out, cheryl knew it was time for her to see veronica at her hotel room. 

the redhead decided to walk the few blocks to veronica’s hotel room, rather than catch a taxi. the night air was cool, but not so cool that cheryl couldn’t handle it. the city wasn't quiet, of course - new york never slept, and that was one of the things cheryl loved about it. but this late, no-one bothered cheryl as she walked to veronica’s hotel. eventually, cheryl reached the hotel room the singer was staying in. she took a deep breath to steel her nerves before knocking on veronica’s door. 

“cheryl? what are you…” veronica trailed off, noticing the bouquet cheryl was holding. “are those for me?”

“yeah, can i come in?” cheryl asked, heat rising to her cheeks. veronica nodded, opening the door wider. she led cheryl to her bed, motioning for her to sit next to her. 

“so, any reason for the flowers?” veronica asked, her cheeks turning a faint shade of pink. 

“to congratulate you on your first show - which was incredible by the way - and also -“ cheryl cut herself off. “can i tell you what these all mean?” she knew that to veronica, it must seem like cheryl was just abruptly changing the subject, but the redhead knew that there was no way she would be able to say the words directly. this was the only way for cheryl to tell veronica what she needed to say. 

“uh, sure?” veronica was visibly flustered. 

“thanks.” cheryl was aware that she was definitely confusing veronica at this point, but she hoped it would end up making sense. for now… cheryl gestured to a large red flower that looked like crumpled up tissue paper. “that’s a red carnation. it means ‘my heart aches for you’. and that one — “ cheryl motioned to a red flower with white edges “ — is gloxinia. ‘love at first sight’” cheryl was beginning to see understanding dawn in veronicas eyes, but she continued explaining the bouquet. “those little white ones? those are myrtle. they mean love. the roses are coral, so they symbolize desire.

“cheryl, where’d you learn all this?” veronica was whispering, not wanting to break the bubble they had created. during the conversation, they had migrated closer, and cheryl could feel veronica’s thigh pressed against hers. 

“private school teaches you lots of things that end up being irrelevant in the real world. like those pink flowers? they’re camellias and they mean longing.” cheryl could feel veronicas eyes on her. “and finally, the yellow and white ones are jonquil. they mean, uh,” and this was it. the moment of truth. there was no coming back from this. “they mean a desire for affection returned.”

they sat in silence for a few seconds, before veronica began to speak. “cheryl,” she breathed out, and oh god oh fuck cheryl had messed everything up and she had ruined her relationship with her best (girl) friend —  “can i kiss you?”

cheryl’s brain short circuited and she barely had time to nod before veronicas lips were on hers and they were kissing. the kiss was soft, but there was an undertone of desperation to it —  this was something veronica had wanted badly for so long too. they broke apart for air before continuing to make out, this second kiss much more desperate than the first. eventually, they broke apart, both panting. cheryl had no words. in all honesty, she was still a little in awe that she had finally gotten her shit together and confessed to veronica. but luckily, veronica chose to talk. 

“cheryl,” veronica breathed out. “i love you too.”

I GET TO INTRODUCE SOMEONE TO THE WONDERS OF ETHO CONTENT SO HERE'S A POST.

i'm going to preface this by saying i adore Etho. i love him with my whole heart and soul actually. but i have also been watching his content for Literally A Decade so i have probably forgotten some of his classics. if i did, PLEASE CHIME IN!

with that disclaimer out of the way, onward! to the New Ethowatcher Primer Post™!

i think Etho is arguably best known for his Minecraft singleplayer let's play, but at the time i'm writing this post, he's uploaded 571 episodes. that's intimidating! so in my opinion, a good primer for this series is his episode 550 world tour. it's 2 years old at this point, but catching up on 21 episodes afterwards is nothing compared to almost 600, and gives you a great reference point for everything that's been accomplished in the world so far - and if you like the world tour enough, you can go back and watch from the beginning!

he was also a member of the Mindcrack SMP. Mindcrack was to people then as Hermitcraft is today; everybody wanted to be a member. a good place to start with his Mindcrack series is season 4. that being said, if you only want to watch a single episode, try episode 10 king of the ladder (the origin of "Ladders" as a nickname for Etho) or season 3 the trial ("why's he got chocolate on his knees?") for wacky hijinks, season 3 final tour for the builds he did that season, or season 4 end of season 4 for the same reason.

he is currently a member of Hermitcraft; due to personal reasons he had to stop uploading in the middle of season 8 and has uploaded only sporadically during season 9. therefore most people usually recommend his hermitcraft season 7 as the best place to start, and for good reason. he builds extremely weird shit (The Monstrosity my beloved), experiments with doing noteblock covers of popular songs, plays ridiculous amounts of Decked Out (trust me. his runs are so fun to watch), participates in a resistance even though he has no idea what's going on (him being a Lorephobe™ means i had no idea Hermitcraft did Lore™ until season 9), makes a business purely to scam people...it's a classic for a reason. oooooo you watch to watch Etho's Hermitcraft S7 so badddddd

he also does modded series occasionally! his project ozone 2 series is a CLASSIC and i highly recommend watching, specifically for Taxes (you'll find out), but also because it is SO enjoyable watching a man be incredibly technical about a modpack even though you have no idea what he's saying most of the time. (i fully zone out during full episodes of this series sometimes. but still rewatch it every couple of years or so. it's chill.)

his original terrafirmacraft series is also one i remember fondly. this modpack is essentially Minecraft, But Hard Mode; more realistic physics and crafting make things much more difficult for the player and it's super interesting, in my opinion. he was also doing a series in an updated/forked version of the pack, called terrafirmapunk, but iirc his world for that series was corrupted and he was unable to restore it, so he had to discontinue it. RIP Chester ):

his current modded series is a modpack he collated himself. unfortunately due to the personal issues mentioned above he's only uploaded a few episodes here and there, but he seems to be really enjoying it and hopefully once things stabilize a little more we'll get more episodes!

he's also building a PVP map in Minecraft! just...slowly. introducing battle bane! we get an episode approximately every year or two or four. he recently built a simplified version on the Hermitcraft server for their recent charity stream and they played a round at the end!

of course, you're always welcome to just...watch his stuff from the beginning if you're a weirdo completionist like me (/derog /j). however, be warned that he is (affectionately) known as Your Favourite Minecraft YouTuber's Favourite Minecraft YouTuber for a reason, and has been on the platform for almost a decade and a half at this point. his early content is therefore much different than his current content and sometimes hard for new watchers to enjoy. i really feel like he's hit his stride in terms of talking to viewers in the last five years and it's much easier to jump in on his newer content, BUT that's just my opinion. ymmv!

Aziraphale had only been attending karate class for a few months. Anathema had convinced him to try it. She was picking up an extra day a week of training in advance of her next promotion. She was already a second-degree black belt, going for her third stripe. Sensei Crowley was serious and sour. Lithe and lean and, Aziraphale had to admit, gorgeous. But not warm. Usually, he seemed vaguely irritated. Even when Aziraphale remembered the Japanese vocabulary, providing the names of the techniques when asked, Sensei Crowley’s approval felt grudgingly given.

Not really traditional sport, but they are in combat and it's a fun one...

you can find gh controllers at basically any secondhand stores (try goodwill) or the flea market, just know that any used controller priced over $75 is a ripoff. once you have a controller you can play gh4 on pc instead of gh3 to get those character models using the mod, which is called gh world tour definitive edition which will also allow you to play the gh3 setlist on gh4. if you can't find a controller you can always play clone hero with your keyboard perfectly fine like many other people do. honestly you can probably play ghwtde with your keyboard too somehow but i don't know for sure. good luck in your gh journey. your ghourney if you will

you say this as if i have upwards of $50 to drop lol

but still, thank you for the info. i couldn't remember what version of guitar hero it was i played on pc vs console lol. also i don't want to play with my keyboard, it doesn't feel right, which is the primary reason i've not played it.
