Chateau Neuf In Oslo. Designed by Lund & Slaatto, 1970. I suppose this is part of the extended Norwegian definition of brutalism with the exposed poured concrete structure exposed. Entry nine: Modern and Futuristic Architecture

I have previously researched Zaha Hadid, a British architect. It is known that many of her designs were not actually built because at the time, they couldn’t physically be built because we did not have the material. However; some of her designs can be made into a reality with the materials we have today. Many of the designs she created where fluid-like – very cursive. The designs and ideas for future buildings are very cursive and sleek; some appearing almost impossible to build (just like Zaha Hadid’s designs did in the past).

There is a futuristic design that is aesthetically pleasing and it renovates an old building. Once a Dutch windmill, it is now getting a “high-tech makeover�� with aspects that will benefit the environment. It is being called a Windwheel, a striking futuristic building that will be environmentally sustainable. It will feature a bar cabins, shopping cabins, education cabins, underwater cabins, restaurant cabins and more. It will include solar façade panels which are essentially solar panels but they go into the ‘skin’ of the building. Rain water will be collected from the building and used. It will produce biogas and use the wind to its advantage in producing energy. The idea of the Dutch Windwheel was released in 2015 and plans are still being made for this. Hopefully, the building will commence so we can all see an environmentally sustainable future.

A lot of modern architecture is conceived as art. The buildings appear simple but are quite complex. A particular favourite building of mine is Falling Water (in the images below). I love how it incorporates the environment as it is surrounded by lush, large trees and a beautiful waterfall that appears to emerge from the building itself. However; it is also modern with the fact that the design is well thought through and you can see the exposed bricks and a simple colour to compliment it. It is described as modern architecture even though it was built in 1935. This confused me as I thought, “How can a building that is 82 years old, be classed as ‘modern’”. I believed it was the now, in this day and age. However; modern architecture began at the beginning of the 20th century. In the 1980s, it was described as post-modern. The function of buildings was one of the main aspects of modern architecture, and approaching the building side from a logical view.

Modern architecture and future architecture is different in many ways, yet, they still have their similarities. I’ve learned not to assume what something is and to do deeper research into the meaning of topics. Next I will be investigating cultural structures which I have decided to do separately to this topic.

Hove has one tough town hall! Opened in 1974 as a replacement of original building from 1882, which was lost in a fire a few years prior. The building was constructed from 900 (!) two-ton concrete blocks.

For the first time I decided to add vegetation to an architecture illustration — mainly because the intricacy of Alexandra Road estate can't be really revealed in a 'flat' view and the result felt quite harsh. Always nice to wander through Golden Lane Estate. Built for middle class families during the 1950s, it was designed by the same team as Barbican center.
