For Mod Jake: Thoughts on the Final 3? :o
(No worries if you don’t want to answer also! /gen)
Honestly I’m a little mixed on them. Generally I like Riya, Jake, and Ally but there’s definitely some issues with them all being finalists. First of all Riya was already a finalist and I don’t think characters should make the finale more than once, it feels kinda unfair to me. But second and more importantly I just feel like all three of them were written oddly and inconsistently so having them as finalists doesn’t feel as fulfilling as it was when characters like James, Miriam, and Ellie made the finale after extensive and well-paced character arcs. Riya used to be an extremely compelling antagonist in season two and even the first part of All Stars but then got demonized beyond belief and had almost all of her nuance stripped away beyond occasionally showing a little inkling of guilt; Jake’s my favorite character in the series but I can admit that his character arc was very dragged out, he spent most of the first half of the season just whining over Tom and I felt like having him return to his roots in episode 18 really undermined his growth and came out of no where, especially considering that he was the one who started the beef with Ally and really made no attempt at amending their relationship even before the bear thing; and Ally’s arc in season three is actually very compelling to me, but I feel like they can’t decide if Ally’s gained confidence yet or not, and once again the beef with Jake is just exhausting atp, sometimes I honestly feel like the writers forget that Ally is there. I’m not necessarily upset with the final three but I am kinda disappointed in how they were handled throughout this season, especially Riya and Jake. I feel like a better final three would be a better written Jake, a more consistent Ally, and Grett or Gabby.
Also, if they’re building to Riya breaking down because of guilt in the finale, that’s cool, but I still don’t really care because they already did that arc with her in season two. I love Riya but this is just kinda ridiculous, this won’t benefit her character. But wtv, I’ll take her over Connor or Yul at least. Anyways, thank you for the question anon!

Soul Aflame
The stars look down upon us
They see a thousand balls of flame
Become someone all rely on
They won't forget your name
A soul burning like a hearth
A gentle constant flame
In times of pain and need and sorrow
A home to return is what you'll be
The stars look down upon us
They see a thousand balls of flame
Answer the cries for justice
They won't forget your name
A soul that burns like a match
A flame wavering in the wind
With a steady hand you'll watch it catch
And make up for all that you once held dear
The stars look down upon us
They see a thousand balls of flame
Become the tree that shelters us
They won't forget your name
A soul burning like a campfire
To connect the past to our strange world
You're timeless yet still modern
Only with you can the tale still unfurl
The stars look down upon us
They see a thousand balls of flame
Champion your highest truth
They won't forget your name
A soul that burns like a torch
A beacon to herald, a light to guide
In search of a bearer to hold up high
In the right hands you'll be all they need
The stars look down upon us
They see a thousand balls of flame
Lead a life they've never seen
They won't forget your name
A soul that burns like a firework
Flung so high and far away
A moment's hope and wonder
Revives the dying day

Aro culture is listening to that little training video at work, that everyone has to take; and sees that it about respecting the LBGTQIA+ community; and then it brings up ally’s for the ‘A’ and nothing else.
Excuse me, but no! It’s for the ace, aro, and/or agender community!!

This was supposed to be the opening to a much longer fic about these three that I got bored of and dropped. I still like it tho :)
-
“So… what now?”
Flamberge had stopped waving at the open air, letting her hand fall to her side as the last of the warp star’s glittering trail fell to the floor around them. Kirby’s starship had long since disappeared over the horizon, leaving them all standing there, completely alone in the sea of stars, watching cosmic waves lap at their feet. The sky beyond was bright, the arena itself pulsing with movement, and yet the mage sisters remained perfectly still, eyes trained on something that had long since disappeared.
They said nothing, just watching the empty space where the destroyer of all their dreams had been, cheerfully waving goodbye. Kirby had, whether they liked it or not, mopped the floor with them, and though his friend heart had cured them of their earlier corruption, it didn’t truly fix… anything. They were still stuck in the swirling gates of an otherworldly Divine Terminus, Void was still gone– defeated and disintegrated by Kirby– and the jamba heart was useless. Even Hyness was discarded like a wet dishrag at the arena’s edge, slumped over and covered in dirtied fabric so unbefitting of such a refined and respected priest. Everything they had worked their whole lives for had been swept away by the galactic tide, leaving them with nothing but each other and the vastness of space.
From the side of the arena, something moved. A familiar whine rang out through the Terminus, sending a chill up the mages’ spines. It didn’t matter how many dimensions they crossed or how fate treated them– the sound of that voice was someone they would recognize anywhere. Francisca and Flamberge rushed over to Hyness, eyes wide in surprise, while Zan stood still for a moment, frozen in shock. Her lord was there, head cocked in confusion as he stared up at them like they had simply woken him from a nap he fully intended on finishing.
“Holy shit, you’re alive?” Flamberge muttered as Francisca fretted about him, checking his face for wounds. In an instant, Zan was beside them, hands shaking and down on her knees like she was praying. The other two moved aside as she knelt further to the ground, carefully cupping Hyness’ face in her hands and bringing herself down to meet his gaze.
“My liege?” she whispered, gentle hands lifting him up incredulously as though his very existence were the holiest of miracles. Tears pricked at her eyes, and as she repeated his name, her voice grew more and more raw, spilling over with emotion. “I thought… oh good stars…”
“What of the Jamba Heart?” Hyness said with a flick of his ears. “What of our ritual?”
Zan was sobbing openly now. “Hyness, I thought… I thought we had lost you.” As she continued to speak, near incomprehensible in her babbling gratitude, Hyness looked away from her, out at the Terminus and its glittering floor. His expression became increasingly upset.
“Zanda,” he urged, “what of the ritual? Where is the Jamba Heart?”
Taken aback, Zan just stared, tears still streaming down her face. “I…”
“You failed,” Hyness said to no one in particular, his gaze transfixed at the trail left behind by Kirby’s warpstar. Zan’s hands fell to her side. “The ritual failed again.”
Zan sniffled and wiped her eyes, unable to find a good answer. Hyness’ once confused expression soured and he dragged himself up, grabbing onto Zan’s robes as he pulled himself to his feet.
“All hope is not yet lost. The future is still bright.” Hyness’ grip on Zan’s arm tightened as he struggled to keep himself upright. He turned back to them, eyes reflecting all the galaxy. Francisca and Flamberge stood to the side, unable to see the same visions in those distant stars. They spared a glance at each other, watching as Hyness lifted his broken body and proclaimed victory in the ashes of defeat.
If it wasn’t going to end here, when would it end? If the dissolving of Void Termina into a million tons of space dust and raw friendship energy wasn’t enough… what was?

Characters: Sherlock Holmes | Herlock Sholmes (Dai Gyakuten Saiban), Mikotoba Yuujin

Welcome back Mod Jake ! :>
If you don’t mind answering: How do you feel about the current remaining contestants (as of Episode 15)?
Hi anon, thank you! These might not be thought out super well but here are my basic takes:
Jake: The blorbo from my show! I feel like the build up to Jake’s character arc was dragged out in the first 12 episodes or so, but for the last three I’ve really enjoyed him— Tom was really holding him back clearly. His friendship with Aiden one of the highlights of the season for me. It’s nice to see him become more honest and emotionally mature and happy after everything he’s been through. If he doesn’t make the finale I’m going to sob.
Ally: Hot take but I like antagonist/morally gray Ally for the most part. The idea of a character who is so online that they become too insecure to function, who ends up pushing people away and becoming hated in their quest to be loved, is really interesting. And frankly sometimes characters have to become worse before they get better. However, within the context of the show’s pattern of either having the female characters work as support for the male protagonists or villainizing independent female characters, I do see why people find it frustrating.
Grett: Grett’s another character who had some weird build up (up until episode 13 she just felt like “Yul’s poor sad meow meow girlfriend” to me tbh, I felt like she wasn’t doing much) but I do like what they’ve done with her in the last few episodes. She’s clearly been through a lot of hardship and it’s nice to see a character come out on top of that. I also loved her friendship with Gabby, it was really cute and I wish it would’ve lasted a little longer, it’s nice to show Grett reconciling with her past by improving for the future and treating the person she was the worst to with kindness, as opposed to Yul who was terrible to her and left even worse. I would’ve written her a little differently but she still deserves to win imo. Also she slays always.
Riya: What did they do to my girl?? I loved Riya’s arc in season two, I thought she and Ellie had two of the best villain arcs in the series and I thought Riya was one of the best season two characters. But they really flushed that down the drain by making her comically evil and forgetting her motive. In season two Riya was a villain but she was sympathetic; she gradually lost sight of her morals in a quest for affection and fame, alienating her closest friend (Rosa María) and ultimately putting herself in mortal danger, which caused her to somewhat see the error of her ways. In the beginning of season three I think they tried to carry this over, showing her inner conflict in earlier episodes like episode 3. But by episode 14 they’d just…totally lost what made Riya human— a desire to fit in to what other people think of her (whether that be movie star or villain), close relationships with Connor and Alec, guilt, a sympathetic past, everything that happened in the season two finale— now she’s just evil because she’s evil, full stop. It’s really disappointing, because having her try too hard to lean into her villain persona and ultimately snapping out of it would’ve been so much more interesting, and I feel like if that’s what they plan to do later then they’re building up to it terribly tbh.
Connor: I really liked Connor in episodes 1-7, I thought he was a good straight-man and foil to Riya and Alec, I thought he was just pleasant and I liked seeing his growth from season two to now. But these last few episodes have simultaneously made him very unlikable while also making him essentially the main character, for some reason. The nepo baby plotline wasn’t built up to at all and it really undermines the successful businessman thing he had going, which made him feel more mature and intelligent; plus making him a union buster on top of that is just poor taste, like wtf. Having Jake as his right hand makes Jake more likable but it just makes Connor seem pathetic having this dude constantly go “nooo Connor pull it together remember that speech you gave us? really cool”. Like yeah Connor rallying the heroes together that one time was good, a little corny but ultimately good for the plot, but other than that all he does is be passive aggressive (or just aggressive) with Riya and Alec and be sad. Also making his feelings for Riya just disappear?? What?? He was in love with her, they understood each other in a way that no one else did in season two, his love for her humanized him a lot and vice versa with Riya’s feelings for him. Why remove that entirely? Sorry if I’m being harsh but I’m honestly really disappointed in how Connor’s being handled, he and Riya and Alec were a highlight of the early episodes and now they’ve been reduced to like the TD love triangle 2.0. But like, fanon love triangle, where Courtney is ridiculously evil for some reason and Gwuncan are just poor sad babies who did nothing wrong. Also if Connor makes the finale I’m going to be so annoyed. He doesn’t need three million dollars, he’s already rich.
Alec: Alec has gone from one of the most calculating and clever villains in the show’s history to a groveling little baby man and I don’t like it. On one hand I do like the idea of Alec growing a conscience after all he’s done to manipulate the game, and I do think it would be cute if that came from his relationships with Riya and Connor. But on the other, he’s become too pathetic imo. Alec’s defining traits are his intelligence, apathetic tendencies, and level-headed demeanor, and they’re really stripping that all back to make the audience sympathize with him when we already could’ve done that easily based on what’s already there?? The Riyalec kiss scene was really good at this; it showed us Alec’s and Riya’s deepest insecurities and regrets, then showed us the two understanding each other and finding comfort in that. Shipping aside, I genuinely think maintaining a positive relationship between them, friendly or romantic, would make them both feel more human while also allowing them to both remain as antagonists because they both would enable each other. They just took all the edge away from his character for like, mid yaoi crumbs. The way Riya is written vs how Connor & Alec are written actually feels reminiscent of how some m/m fics will demonize the fuck out of a character’s girlfriend or female friend or etc to prop up the male characters as sweet angels who’ve done nothing wrong, if I’m being honest.
Overall, I loved Aleconniya until episode 14 but I just want all three of them gone at this point because their writing is really far off from their original characterizations and it’s overall just not very good. But I do enjoy Jake, Grett, and Ally for the most part and hope they make the finale. Sorry this got kinda long, thank you for the question anon!

I am writing a character with FASD. The information I've found on the condition is all about how it looks in children, but as the story goes on, he's going to age, and I wonder if any of you might have some idea of how the symptoms might look in a teen or adult, or know where I can find that information.
Hi asker,
I found you some resources!
MedicalNews Today has a quick, easy to read summary to start off
This PDF about Adults with FASD from The Center for MSACD at Emory University is another easy to read general overview
A scientific paper, What Happens When Children with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Become Adults?, from the National Library of Medicine
This PDF resource about supporting adults with FASD by Community Living British Columbia, which includes a common developmental profile
This page on resources for and about adults with FASD by the National Organization for FASD Australia, which includes two PDFS by the organization (one on how to support adults with FASD, and one for young adults with FASD), as well as various links for resources and information both for and about people with FASD
This resource page meant for adults with FASD from the National Organization for FASD UK, which has information on FASD as well as resources that can help the person
This page on Understanding and Supporting Adults with FASD from the Indiana Alliance on Prenatal Substance Exposure
This PDF of a paper, Understanding and Supporting Adults with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder – Strategies for Health Professionals: an Opinion Piece, of course aimed at doctors and whatnot, from the Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences (Vol 16 Number 3 Article 2)
Also, feel free to scroll through our intellectual disability tag; about a third of people with FASD have intellectual disability due to it (source).
Hope this helps,
– mod sparrow

serious word of warning about a server that's been making the rounds
i've debated about making this post a lot, for a lot of reasons. i'm concerned about making it as a trans person and as a relatively new blog, though i've been involved in the whump community for years. i hope you'll hear me out and i'm not looking forward to whatever backlash may come my way, should anyone actually pay attention to this at all.
the short version is: the whump discord server 'whump lovers collaborate' (@/whumplovers-collaborate) is unsafe and hostile to trans people and the server owner will not take action to shut down transphobia, nor will she allow her mod team to do so. i am certain this would apply to other bigotries as well. i know this because i am trans, and when i called out some disgustingly transphobic commentary being made by a member of the server i was blamed for causing drama, essentially, and there was a rule added to the server not to talk about 'controversial topics' or get into arguments, and that was all that was done.
the much longer version is under the cut. i just can't sit on this anymore after seeing that the server got advertised in the whumptober server (to no fault of the whumptober mods who didn't know about any of this, they're fine) and also seeing hundreds of notes on posts broadcasting it. this server is unsafe for trans people and the server owner is actively enabling bigots. given the whump community has a bit of a transphobia problem in some places, i wanted to make sure no trans person or ally was unwittingly walking into that without warning. i'd appreciate it if you would spread the word as well, to keep trans community members and allies safe.
so, here's what happened:
i was in the whump lovers collaborate server for a while earlier this year. in february, a member of the server started spouting off some extremely transphobic rhetoric, including talking about inherent biological differences between men and women, that women are inherently and unchangeably weaker than men, that men have a 'biological instinct' to protect women, and other things. (there was also some bizarre commentary about how abuse or assault committed against men was inherently less upsetting, and often funny to witness because of this).
seeing this and being unwilling, as both a trans person and someone who believes it is important to not let bigotry go unchallenged, i stepped in and called out these statements for being both factually untrue and steeped in both misogyny and transphobia. this person and i went around and around in circles as he asked 'genuine questions' which were just thinly veiled excuses to continue needling me on the subject. eventually, i shut it down by saying that this was not the appropriate venue for a transphobic cis person to get educated about the nuance of the trans experience and trans issues, but what he was saying was transphobic and he needed to stop now that he'd been told that.
throughout this interaction, mods were emoji-reacting and responding to other things. at no point did any mod step in to help me or shut down the transphobia or at all intervene in what was happening. after i shut things down for good, one of the mods said 'thanks for keeping everything respectful' which was a truly laughable thing to have said in that situation.
after this, the server owner made an announcement that said, among a few other things about Not Fighting: "Friendly reminder that we are all here because of what we have in common, our love of writing We are not here to debate controversial issues Or say harmful opinions If you cannot hold a conversation without being civil and without escalating conflict, back away from the channel, and cool down All involved in a conflict are responsible for turning a chill space sour No matter how right you think you are (I’m not saying no mention of controversial things is allowed per se, I’m saying be civil, if that means avoiding controversial topics, avoid away)"
this is not an appropriate response to one person espousing blatant transphobia (among other disgusting views) and being called on it. a rule was added that if a mod or the server owner asked you to change the subject from a topic, you had to do so immediately and there should be no more discussion of it 'by any of the participants'. no rule was present to begin with making clear that bigotry was not tolerated, nor was one added.
subsequently, the server owner made it clear she had no interest in protecting marginalized community members, and that she blamed me for what happened because i refused to allow rampant transphobia to proceed unchecked.
when either asked by other server members about what happened or when asking server members who left why they left (which is a weird thing to do on its own) the server owner responded by essentially throwing a fit and asking what she was supposed to do? kick the transphobe out? she whined about how the person saying something should be done about the transphobe was assuming that she hadn't already done anything.
(she also said that she hadn't done anything. the person was not warned, muted, banned, there were no consequences. but she whined about the assumption that she hadn't done anything about it.)
she also said that it wasn't just the transphobe's fault. "[transphobe] was not the only one at fault there in that others contributed to the conflict by engaging them, drawing out more of their unpleasant opinions. If I punished [problem person] alone, the others might think that they were in the right" that is a direct quote from the server owner. i was clearly the person she was speaking about, and she refused to enforce consequences on the transphobe because that might lead to me thinking that it was okay to call out transphobia and protect myself and other trans people in that space.
when i spoke to a few of the other mods about what happened, the response was disappointing, to put it mildly. the mod team had apparently tried to argue with her and get her to enforce a no bigotry policy but she was afraid of causing arguments and didn't want to deal with conflict, and so refused to do so. this is not acceptable behaviour for someone who is in charge of such a large space. you cannot be this conflict-averse and also run a server of hundreds of people, especially if the outcome is protecting bigots.
the mods i spoke to also got defensive and upset when i pointed out that by not expressing disagreement with the owner's actions and by throwing up their hands and saying 'oh well, nothing we can do!' they were also tacitly endorsing transphobia and a community that protects transphobes at the expense of trans people. they were unwilling to do anything in the moment, and failed to do anything after the fact either.
i have screenshots and proof of all of these events, but i didn't add them here bc i didn't want to make this even longer. please feel free to contact me directly if you would like any further information or to see proof of what i have mentioned here.
in short:
please do not join this server. you will not be protected there, as the server owner cares more about making it as big and as popular as possible than she does about keeping her server bigot-free. please do not promote this server or allow this server to be promoted in your own spaces either. please do your part to keep trans people in the whump community safe.

Leaving Kindergarten Mafia
There have already been a few posts floating around about the Discord server implosion of Kindergarten Mafia. They do a great job of outlining the events that happened, with documentation, directly from the folks who were harmed by the server owner (Hann) and mods that helped enable their racism. (Snake and Mouse, Jinx1, Jinx2, mousydentist, Faye, among others.) So I'm not going to do that.
These are my own thoughts on the specific racism and tenets of white supremacy that I observed in the server as well as a general commentary on joining fandom spaces.
Rarely do I emphasize my age but it's relevant so here we are : I am 35 years old this year and Kindergarten Mafia was part of my first baby steps into any fandom. Ironically, my hesitation to join fandom ended up being proven because I had heard, for a very long time, that fandom spaces were dominated by racism and a failure to acknowledge POC fans. For a long time, I was complacent and felt "safe" in that server of 300+ folks.
Until one Native member spoke up about the usage of "spirit animal" as appropriative and the cracks in the foundations began to show themselves to everyone and not just the people with marginalized identities.
I had already started to feel uncomfortable in how the server dealt with ableism. There was also a member who I've previously called out on Tumblr, for usage of the m*dget slur in their story, and who became extremely vocal recently. (Spoiler alert - they wrote an entire essay excusing their usage of it, multiple times in the fic, because they couldn't be creative or bothered enough to come up with an alternative for a "short person".)
Without further ado, let's get into it. These are all from the link above, "tenets of white supremacy in organizations" (and yes, a Discord server of 300+ people absolutely DOES count as an organization).
1. Sense of Urgency, such as prioritizing quick or highly visible results that can exclude potential allies. -> In the server, both server owner and problematic mods continued to emphasize that their "missteps" (i.e. racism) was due to needing to seek a solution ASAP for the good of the server.
2. Worshipping the Written Word, such as valuing strong documentation and writing skills. -> Rebuttals to POC/marginalized folks were constantly full of dictionary definitions, copied over.
3. Believing in Only One Right Way, such as concluding something is wrong with people who refuse to adapt or change. -> POC members and allies were banned when anger was expressed because OUR anger suddenly made it an "unsafe" space for the server owner and problematic mods.
4. Paternalism, such as decision-making processes that are only understood by those with power and unclear to those without it.  -> Despite multiple server users disagreeing with the server owner's tactics (including the co-owner, who stepped down), Hann continued to defend + make decisions.
5. Defensiveness, such as spending energy trying to protect power or defend against charges of racism. -> There's too many examples to cite here. But in the end, it was claimed that the initial problem was solved. And then the problem mod was invited back. With additional defense of why.
6. Power Hoarding, such as feeling threatened when anyone suggests organizational changes. -> Instead of wanting to listen to marginalized identities, the server was threatened with a shut-down. Multiple people stepped up to take over as server owner. But power hoarding was more important so not only was the server shut down... it was resurrected from the dead to include their favorite (white) people. This leads us to...
7. Believing I’m the Only One, such as thinking that if something is going to get done right, then ‘I’ have to do it.
8. Fear of Open Conflict, such as equating the raising of difficult issues with being rude or impolite. -> The initial issue around the problematic phrase was ridiculously hush hush. POC members were banned for their (rightfully so) angry remarks.
9. Believing in Objectivity, such as considering emotions to be irrational and destructive to decision-making.  -> Not just the server owner but the people who rushed to defend them and the problematic mods, claimed to be impartial and objective, based on their queer identities or other things. As humans, none of us can actually be objective and all of us are a little racist because racism is a systemic problem that we were raised under.
10. Claiming a Right to Comfort, such as scapegoating those who cause emotional or psychological discomfort. -> In the end, it was clear that only whiteness was valued when POC folks + allies were banned or made to feel uncomfortable enough to leave (such as myself).
I know I've only posted my thoughts/feelings vs documentation (which, you shouldn't always demand because see above for "worshipping the written word") but if this screenshot of the new rules for the new server doesn't convince you that something (racism/cult-ism) is wrong with these folks... I don't know what will.
Tumblr media
TL;DR - Ownership and modding of a large Discord server doesn't make you a god. You are, unfortunately, still a puny mortal with the biases that come along with being as such. I'm sure it was a fun power trip for those involved but I am happy to expose the rotting underbelly in a way that I see fit.
In conclusion, I leave you with further reading that will help decolonize your mindset and has done a much better job at showing that the problems with the Kindergarten Mafia are not unique (as they claimed). It is one that those of us with marginalized identities face constantly and we are fucking tired of running into this and being treated in a way that emphasizes the problem with our existence in real life. Intersectionality and decolonization is what will actually liberate us, and without both, online spaces are simply the same reflections of real life.
At the very least, I hope it gives some of you food for thought.
(I will also post my Scathing Letter™ that was my last message in the server as a separate post because I am wordy AF and this is already too long.) [1/26/2024 update] Now with part 2 because apparently I had more things to say.
