WeChat Is Introducing Contactless Payments In Hong Kong
Tumblr media
WeChat Pay, a Chinese payment application provided by Tencent, will introduce a new payment option for Hong Kong`s commuters. Starting in December, customers will be able to use their mobile phones for making payments to the local railway operator, MTR, according to a report published at South China Morning Post. Recently, WeChat`s mother company, Tencent Holdings, became the fifth-largest company in market value, replacing the technology leader Facebook. MTR reportedly confirmed that WeChat Pay terminals will be installed at some ticket machines at two stations by mid-December. However, they did not specify the exact stations that were selected. MTR`s spokesperson commented in an interview with the local media: “The company noticed electronic payments are becoming popular, with a multitude of payment options on the market. Following a study, MTR has decided to roll out the trial scheme.” It is reported that WeChat Pay is not the only possible collaborator in this project. Their major competitor, Alipay, stated that they would offer the same option in the “near future”. It is further speculated that they are in talks with MTR at the moment. Nevertheless, the spokesperson for Ant Financial, the company behind Alipay, did not confirm the statement. Still, it was said that it is "one of the possible scenarios" when Alipay launches a new feature. The mobile payment services at the railway station would probably be most beneficial for tourists from mainland China, who currently find it difficult to pay for commuting. Read the full article
