Introducing Deklyn

The sun rose upon the bloodshed of a night’s battle. Steel sabatons stepped through and over the bodies of the dead. He stared down at them with a coldness he forced into his heart. There was no room for anything soft here. It would be too easy to destroy him if he allowed himself to feel anything for these people. Enemies. That’s all he could afford to see them as. The sun’s radiant gaze lifted through the field and he turned to look upon it. Another day that he could count as his own.

He removed his helm and took a deep breath. Iron filled his lungs. He brushed away the honey wheat strands of hair stuck to his face and let the cool breeze calm his racing heart. The battle had only just ended and he still felt the rage of battle within his veins. Coming down from a fight was always a struggle. Deklyn was never good at lowering his defenses, and surrounded by the enemy, even defeated, wracked his nerves.

Deklyn continued to march through the cacophony of bodies, silencing groans of pain with his blade. He said nothing. Not even a prayer for them for they were corrupted creatures. Their plague had harassed the lands he was sworn to protect far too long and far too frequently. They didn’t even deserve a prayer. Not that it would do them any good. They were already doomed, souls bound to a wickedness that could never be undone. Ungodly magic that should never be touched. And yet someone had. And someone was taking full advantage of the power that came with corruption. Deklyn knew this to be fact and with each throat he tore open with his blade he swore he would find the source of this undead curse. 

He approached the next body, pressing the tip of his blade to its head and tilting it from side to side. The thing’s chest rose and fell with labored breaths that rattled its lungs with a sickening mucus. It was probably a man once. Deklyn could still make out the general features that matched his own. Ears, eyes, a nose and mouth. Gnarled and curled in on themselves now. A pitiful version of life. 

He couldn’t look upon it any longer and lifted his blade to make the death blow. In that moment, the creature sprang up with an unnatural speed and dug its claws into Deklyn’s armor. The steel groaned under the powerful grip as he caught his footing, feet digging into the bloody mud. He pushed his weight forward, narrowly avoiding those snapping jaws. The cracks of its teeth against teeth rang in his ears and he felt the bile rising in his throat. The thing was damn near impossible to hit as it wrapped itself around him, knife-like fingers clawing into his armor searching for an opening. It needed something soft to latch into, to pour its corruption in. He wouldn’t let that happen. With his free hand he slammed his gauntlet into the creature’s mouth, sucking in a breath as it dug its teeth into the metal. The metal caved into the force, pushing brutally against his hand, but he did not relent. Through clenched teeth he growled and pushed the face away from his own, watching it gnaw on him. The steel wouldn’t take much more than this and he didn’t waste another moment. He lifted his blade and slammed it through the creature’s chest as soon as he had pushed it far enough away from himself. 

The creature released his hand from its teeth and let out a throaty cry. It tried to scramble away, shoving off of him and to the ground where it clamored. Deklyn slammed the sword deep into its back, twisting the blade. The creature went limp but he wasn’t going to risk another attack and made his final blow to remove its head completely.

I once read that the four saddest words in the English language are "I'm used to it." And that about sums up Tiger's life.

Beyond hunger and exhaustion and pain, what he's used to most is isolation. Even as a child (before his life became a living nightmare), his father was gone for months at a time, his brother worked fourteen hour days six days a week, and his mother wanted him to sit quietly studying without bothering her. He's had a long life of loneliness and doesn't trust that he won't always, inevitably, end up alone again. So naturally he pushes people away and doesn't let himself get too comfortable with being wanted.

The words if they’re difficult to read say “I don’t like being alone - it’s just what I’m used to.” I felt like making a moodboard kinda thing! It's funny because I'm writing Tiger with a mindset exactly like his. I don't consider what he's been through that often, but when I think about it too deeply, it's actually heartbreaking and then I feel bad I've put him through so much haha. And despite it all he'd still give the shirt off his back to help someone in need. But oh, sorry, no- he's very cold and aloof and rough, not a bleeding heart at all, definitely not. Very badass. Don't cross this guy!
