I think the kids playing chess were six and three, two older children who both started living at the facility at age 17-18. (then again, that's IF the teaser is a flashback.)

This scene in the Six comic vaguely reminded me of the Rainbow Room set up, particularly the building blocks. Twins Jamie and Marcy, numbers 9 and 9.5, being the subjects seen crawling in sync.

From my understanding it seems like the comics are a merely an expansion of the Stranger Things universe and more so filling in the cavities left by canon. Personally, I get the impression that the specific numbers heavily focused on in the comics are set up to be insignificant and brushed over, or just entirely rewritten. Avoiding any radical contradictory in the show and allowing the Duffers the utmost creative freedom. For example, Jody Houser was directed to avoid featuring number 001 in her extensions of the Stranger Things universe, so I’d assume that the Duffers have there own big plans, grander than the numbers extensively explored throughout the extension universe.

If it’s a flashback (which I’m not convinced it entirely is in the slightest) then I’d estimate it’s taking place smack dab in between of Terry barging into the Rainbow Room and Brenner beginning sensory deprived experiments with El or just much further down the timeline. I’m talking early to mid 70s as Becky Ives states that when Terry joined MKUktra it was supposedly ramping down. The Rainbow Rooms abruptly different than the room El and Kali are seen playing in during Terry’s repetitive conscious, it’s smaller and less funded. The children playing also appear to be roughly in between the age El and Kali are in Terry’s memory. But unlike Kali and El their heads are shaved and dressed in a hospital gowns opposed to a uniform. Of course there could be younger numbers but El’s cell doesn’t appear to be the one she resided in throughout her major expirments with Dr. Brenner.

There’s plenty of inconsistency but the mismatched chess sets are certainly a salient cause for skepticism, the tradition chess set seen amongst the wreckage of the Rainbow Room then the set resembling that from Blade Runner being used by the older subjects. There’s running speculation that the HNL footage is documenting the aftermath of a horrific event that occurred in the Rainbow Room occupying the young numbers. Making me believe that the older subjects aren’t in the Rainbow Room with the younger subjects at least at the same point in time.

It’s worth mentioning that it appears they’re continuously filming in heavily forested areas, which coincidentally is what Hawkins Laboratory used to cover up Will’s disappearance, convincing the general public that Will got lost in the woods. Possibly other children or teenagers for that matter, are going missing, making them the older subjects at the Lab.

I hadn’t seen this particular photo upon my initial post speculating the identity of the subjects playing chess but multiple older actors have been spotted on set, with hospital gowns and even shaved heads.

But they don’t at all look like the subjects heavily discussed back in January.

They all appear to be older than the younger subjects in the Rainbow Room so it’s more or less safe to assume that there’s more young adult numbers.

Yeah even though it was never confirmed I always thought the first 10 subjects were from when Terry and the rest were still volunteering for the experiments and after the lab stopped the tests, they learned that Terry was pregnant and saw the perfect opportunity to continue the tests even if they weren't supposed to and that's why there's only Eleven left. But now that I think about it idk how Kali would fit into that

Yeah like I love the theory that the first few test subjects weren't other kids with powers, but the MkUltra test subjects at Hawkins Lab, but at the same time that makes me question how the lab would have transitioned into the stuff with other kids? Because as far as we know, the only connection is what happened with El, but she's much younger than Kali and probably the other subjects as well, and the lab finding out she got powers as a result of MKUktra must've happened well after they started taking these other children

I love the way you think, and you are 100% right, but I want to clarify something:

Project MKUktra, the notorious US based bullshit involving the CIA and, eventually, LSD experimentation, actually started in the 50s shortly after WWII and was staffed with scientists collected by the US from the Axis powers via the Paperclip Project. The SDI has it's roots in the space race, which was the front-facing propaganda and back-end national defense initiative against the Soviets which included but was not limited to space spying and attempts at space-based defense systems.

MKUltra was halted in the early 70s and SDI publicly started in the early 80s.

Truthfully, it works both ways. What is most interesting to me, particularly with the MKUltra angle, you can either see Project Shadow as the START or the END of that initiative. With SDI, again, the Eclipse Canon and the ARK as a whole is the beginning of G.U.N's space initiative or the jumping point for their forward-facing public program.

I don't know if it was intended by the writers to work both ways. I think, largely, they just moved it to the 70s since 2020-50=1970 but like... I think it's a neat little continuity detail. I do wonder how much info on these projects they will use as inspiration and worldbuilding.
