One Year Anniversary Celebration Post

Oh. My. God. When I tell you that this has been a secret for a very, very long time, I mean it has been a secret that I've been dying to share for several months now! Oh, Fry 😭. Looking at this artwork again makes me want to cry happy tears! It gets me feeling all nostalgic and I miss my OC characters from the BMR series so much! Here we have Diego, Jackie and Solomon, whom you've captured amazingly with detailing the way the characters looked in my mind. Their personalities match their looks. Joel has a problem. Having settled into some semblance of a 'normal' life in Jackson that no longer involves running for his life and living off scraps, his clothes are getting a little… tight. Self-conscious, he deals with it the way he does most things - he ignores it.

That is until one day, the zipper on his jeans finally gives up after one too many desperate tugs, leaving him stuck. With neither Tommy nor Ellie anywhere to be found to get him out of the tight spot, Joel begrudgingly heads to the clothing store he’s seen in town for help - and a new pair of jeans.

There, he meets you.

Part 2: Threads

When Joel revisits Main Street Outfitters two weeks later, he finds you on your knees. Again.

Part 3: Edgestitch

You wear those jeans for Joel when you see him again at the baby shower at Tommy and Maria's - like he asked you to.

Part 4: Notch

While Ellie works her first shift at the Outfitters, Joel drops by yours to return the blouse you left behind at the baby shower. Turns out, there's plenty around the house to keep him occupied until the teenager clocks off.

One lazy afternoon, Joel tests your patience.

FAQ:

Can you explain the concept a little further?  Sure! This is a challenge for yourself to create 12 things (fic/art/gifsets/edits/anything really), one each month, based around a theme. That theme can be very structured or very loose, there are no rules. And it doesn’t have to be a big production, you could write 12 Mandalorian haikus. Or pick a different character every month and make a gif of their hands. Maybe you want to challenge yourself to write more inclusively or try a new format or finally dip your toe into smut. Pick something you want to try, or something that brings you joy--it’s about growth, community, and fulfillment. The idea is that you’ll have the support of the other Year Of makers who are all running their own challenges and hopefully come out of 2023 with some new tools/stories/fun pieces/a collection that you might not otherwise have embarked upon.

Is it only for the Pedro boys?  No! You can include any fandom you want, or no fandom at all! Just know that I’ll be posting the creations on my blog and hopefully it will be shared by some of your Year Of compatriots, and many of us are part of the Pedro fandom, so those are the eyes that will see a lot of it. But really, this is support for makers of all kinds for all their blorbos!!!

How do I join up?  Send me a DM/ask, respond to the master post, or tag me in a post about your intentions and I’ll add you to the list! If you look at the masterpost, you’ll see some of the challenges are linked to that artist’s masterlist. If you set one up, let me know and I’ll get it linked. @stealyourblorbos suggested we start a Discord coven to help us stay connected, and if there’s enough interest, I think that’d be great! Of course it wouldn’t be required--I for one am not great at Discord and am kind of a ding dong at it and tend to get overwhelmed, so would understand if anyone wasn’t into that. But I trust Jules’ expertise and think that could be a lot of fun!

What happens if I don’t complete my challenge for a month / fail the challenge? There’s no way to fail here, and if you do, that’s your own call. So you don’t do it one month. So what? Life gets busy or inspiration fails to strike. Completing this challenge is not a pillar that keeps the sky from falling down--there’s more to life than this. This is my invitation to you to let go of perfectionist completism. If it’s not bringing you joy one month, don’t do it! Join in next month, we’ll be here with open arms!!!! And if you still complete the month’s challenge but post it a week late? I will still reblog it and include it in that month’s masterlist. This is for fun. This is not to add another pressure into your life. Think of it as a book club--sometimes you don’t get the book read, but you still come to the club meeting because community, right? (And maybe because wine and cake too. I don’t judge.) As long as you get to try something new and come out of the year with something you had fun making, you’re a winner. The one-a-month thing is just a helpful guideline, as is the theme; rails to ride and help guide inspiration. It’s not a promise you’re making to anyone, no obligations to keep. You’re safe here. <3

I absolutely adore this with my whole entire heart and my soul, too. LOOK AT THEM! Look at Ellie in her fucking element! Tasting a toasted marshmallow for the first time (not even knowing it’s been stale for longer than she’s been alive, just knowing it’s sweet and gooey) and going off about space. And Joel! Joel with his “omg this kid won’t shut up”/“I hope she never shuts up” expression. He’s in his element, too- being a Dad and experiencing her joy over such a small thing. AND THE COLORS! THE COLORS ARE FLIPPING BEAUTIFUL. Gosh I love this. Thank you for sharing your work, you’re amazing!!

Stay In Bed has truly been one of my favorite things to write, I am genuinely so emotional over this series and my own relationship with it. I'm still surprised by the feedback and the love, so I would also want to thank everyone for their undying support and enthusiasm for it 🧡🧡🧡

This is from one of the scenes I wrote for chapter 6 and I can't stop staring at it. Thank you Maia for making this come to life, this made me beyond happy 🥺🧡

(I would also like to emphasize that in the story reader does not have a physical description whatsoever. I went the self-indulgent route and asked for it to be a self-insert <3)

“How do you like your coffee?” 

“With milk,” you answer. “A lot of it, preferably.” 

“So milk with a dash of coffee,” he grins, amused. “Got it.” 

It’s been a couple of days since you moved in with Joel and Sarah. It was much easier to live with the father-daughter due than you initially had thought. Tommy came over in the mornings, dropping you off to work and Sarah to school, and the brothers went to do their own thing after that. 

With Joel’s back turned to you, you look down at your sketchbook and add another line to what is supposed to be his unruly hair. He really needs a haircut. 

Surprisingly living with him isn’t weird at all. He made you feel welcome. No awkward glances, no awkward touching. Just neighbors helping each other out. He places the steaming mug next to you and leans on his elbows. He looks at what you’re drawing and raises an eyebrow. 

Joel brings the mug to his lips. 

“You’re paintin’ me?” 

“I’m sketching you,” you answer. “You’re a lovely specimen.” 

“Is that so.” 

The scent of coffee fills your lungs. Lifting your gaze, you observe his facial structures. You see the imperfections, take in the sight of his eyes, his bushy eyebrows, and the bald patches in his beard. You want to touch the small beauty park right in the corner of his eye that’s impossible to see unless you’re an inch further away. 

 If he knew how you saw him—if he knew how big he was in your mind— Joel would be terrified. 

“Do you like art?” you ask, taking him by surprise. He takes a sip of his coffee and your gaze drops back to your sketch.  

He hums, fingers thrumming the kitchen counter. “I like your art.” 

“I should take you guys to an art gallery or something,” you say, smiling. “If you like mine, you’re going to go nuts over the things that are out there.” 

Joel pouts and you roll your eyes. “What are you looking at me like that for?” you ask.

“I like your drawings. They’re—They feel close. I don’t know how else to describe it.” 

It’s because it’s you who I think of when I create them. 

“Do you know Salvador Dali?” you ask, then quickly add. “Or Dorothea Tanning?” 

“Sweetheart, the only artist I know is Da Vinci and I’m not even a hundred percent sure he is one.” 

“He is,” you affirm him excitedly, looking back up. “I love surrealism. It’s when everything gets really weird basically. So—wait let me show you. I think I have a couple of pictures between the pages.” 

You miss the way Joel’s lips slowly curl up, adoration and fondness adorning his face, softening the edges. He comes closer. Your pulse quickens as your fingers rush to find the images, and when they do you basically rip them out from between the pages 

“Look.” 

All of them are images from Dali’s artwork. Mainly butterflies. Joel observes them carefully, touching them as if fearing he might stain them. You urge him to take a closer look by placing one between his thick fingers. It’s The Butterfly Rose. 

“Never thought you would do homework for a hobby.” 

“It’s not—” You let out an exasperated sigh, cutting yourself off mid-sentence. “Do you think I want to work at the coffee house forever? It’s not just a hobby. And of course, as an artist, I look at other art to be inspired. They make me feel things.” Seeing the startled expression on his face, you add, “Don’t you get like…shivers or something when you see a very nice wooden table?”

Oh, you made him uncomfortable. You sense that in an instant. His fingers trace the image of the painting, looking down, you notice the crease between his brows deepening with concentration. Was he concentrating on the image? In your words? You have no idea—the only thing you know is that this man concentrating on art is making your insides clench with a need. 

“Sorry,” he grumbles. “I didn’t mean it like that. I do think you’re a serious artist. It’s just…fuck that came out wrong. I just didn’t think you would put in this much effort to somethin’ I said,” he shakes his head. “Shit, I’m bad at this.” 

That undeniable need to touch him comes rushing back. You bite the inside of your bottom lip instead. “ I think I might’ve overreacted after hearing the same thing from my brother all the time. It’s all good. You might be the only one that takes me seriously so it was unfair for me to jump to conclusions like that.” 

“He don’t support you?” 

“He does…” you trail off. “In his own way, I guess.” 

“That doesn’t sound like support,” he answers, clicking his tongue. “And just FYI I like your butterflies better, sweet tea.” 

“Sweet tea?” you ask, lips curling with amusement and eyes widening with shock. 

He shrugs. “You said you liked Dorothea…somethin’---” 

“Tanning.” you quickly say. “So Sweet Tea as in…the last syllable of her name?” 

“Would you rather I call you Tea?” he asks, raising an eyebrow. 

“Nope!” you grin, your heart elevated. “Sweet Tea is perfect.” 

With a soft smile, Joel places the picture in front of you and gently taps on it. 

“Well then, Sweet Tea,” he says. “Tell me more about this surrealism thing.”

Ezra at MoMA — In the Dark

The lush greenery in front of him soothes him, the deep shadows of the jungle beckoning him closer. The rounds of the leaves, the sloping curves of the woman, the weight of the heat held in the picture itself. He feels warmer just looking at it, as though the implicated humidity in the scene radiates from the canvas and it takes the chill from his skin; his cheeks still tight from the bitter winds outside. Letting his eyes go out of focus, he allows the tension to drain from his body.

He’s never been able to fully articulate why he loves this painting so much. If asked, he would only say it seems to bring him comfort and beginning during his early days in the city, he’s visited it more times than he can count. He’s memorized the picture, has a postcard of it in his room, has thought about buying a print for his house, but deciding that nothing would come close to the real thing, he’s never done it.

He tried to show it to Cee once, waiting for the same intense connection from her. And while he could tell she appreciated it, she didn’t quite get it — but then again, neither does he.

Karrde's Fandom Friday Rec #3 (03/03/23)

My last rec this week has to go to @mjpens for this The Last of Us artwork with Ellie and Riley. I have been looking forward to this episode for FOREVER, and I think Maia's art perfectly captures my favorite moment from the episode, the last real moment where Ellie and Riley are happy together (and are as carefree as two kids can be in the apocalypse). I love everything about it from the style to the lighting, and I think it absolutely depicts the characters perfectly. I LOVE IT.
