Texas State Bar honors Fort Worth faith-based legal organization with Pro Bono Award
Tumblr media
Methodist Justice Ministry, a faith-based family law nonprofit, received the 2024 Pro Bono Award from the State Bar of Texas on June 20, 2024.
This is the third time in the award’s 40-year history that a Fort Worth organization has been selected.

Yajaera Chatterson remembers how a phone call from Child Protective Services changed her family’s life.
It was a Friday afternoon in 2015 when she found out her sister was under investigation.
Chatterson was faced with a decision:
She could become a voluntary caregiver for her nephew, Jovani, until the case was closed or let him go to foster care.
She and her husband, Aaron, didn’t hesitate to take him in.
Her experience propelled her into a world of family law, where she would end up becoming the development director for Methodist Justice Ministry, the faith-founded firm that helped her obtain custody of her nephew.
Now, the organization is being recognized for providing free legal representation and ongoing support to survivors of traumatic domestic violence and neglect on a statewide level.
The State Bar of Texas awarded Methodist Justice Ministry the 2024 Pro Bono Award on June 20, marking the third time a Fort Worth organization has been a recipient in the award’s 40-year history.
“It’s a nice validation that within our legal community, our work for the last 18 years is being recognized as a vital and crucial help for vulnerable community members,” Chatterson said.
Methodist Justice Ministry was established in 2006 by Brooks Harrington, an attorney and ordained Methodist minister.
The ministry’s attorneys file lawsuits in Tarrant and Johnson county’s family courts, including protective orders, custody and divorce.
Its client households are generally within 125% above the federal poverty line and cannot afford legal counsel.
The Pro Bono Award honors a volunteer attorney organization, such as a legal aid organization, local bar association or nonprofit that has made an “outstanding contribution toward guaranteeing access to the legal system by the poor,” according to the award’s nomination form.
The last time a Fort Worth organization was a recipient of the award was the Texas Lawyers for Texas Veterans in 2019.
“MJM (Methodist Justice Ministry) has grown from humble beginnings to become a vital pillar of support within the Fort Worth community,” according to the State Bar of Texas’ annual meeting notes.
Currently, one in three women in Tarrant County will be affected by intimate partner violence at some point in her lifetime, according to the county’s criminal district attorney website. Methodist Justice Ministry has filed over 1,200 family lawsuits and represented more than 3,000 vulnerable community members impacted by family violence.
Aaryn Landers Lamb, the organization’s new executive director, said the award recognizes the work the staff has been doing since its mission started several years ago.
“Tarrant County is not small. Fort Worth is not small,” Landers Lamb said. “I feel really proud that Methodist Justice Ministry gets to represent the community in this way.”

“If you carry your childhood with you,
you never grow older.”
Tom Stoppard
I already knew from the start that I’m no good at keeping promises to myself. But I still don’t care that it took me awhile to put in writing the things that happened this couple of months. Besides, it’s my page so I’m going to share whatever I can (really Grace, excuses 😋 ).
Holiday Season (I know, it’s already 2019). The most wonderful time of the year. Maybe not as much as before when I was little but the season sure always makes me reminisce about what used to be. Not to mention that ever since I moved here in Doha, December became just like any other month to me.
Deco by housemates
I remembered my first December here when the only Christmas decoration I could find was the one our landlady put up in the living room and the flower shop across our work place. It actually made me feel sad that time. Although prior coming here I already prepared myself of the possibilities that many things that I enjoyed seeing and doing back home might not be around and my first few months was a total “I thought so” moment. By now I already got used to it and so I make the most of whatever I can to make the season a bit festive to me.
Of course each expat community here has there own way of celebrating the season. The weather becomes better during this time actually which is why there are more activities going around. A lot of festivals in town happens during this season as well.
One of which was Qatar’s first edition of the International Light Festival, Light Me Lusail, held at Lusail Marina Eastern Promenade. LightMe is an International Light, Art and Digital Media Festival. We spent a weekend night at Lusail City to witness the said event along with our housemates. Different light works were installed and one of which was the NEST by light designers and architects Vikas Patil and Santosh Gujar.
If there weren’t people watching over it, I’m pretty sure a lot would have gone inside that ball of light and took selfie in it (that includes me).
It was really nice that we were able to see it along with some of our housemates and of course it won’t be complete without us taking some photos there.
Charlie took more photos than I did and shared it in his facebook account. You can check it out there (click on his name 😉 ).
Another way to celebrate the season is the parties. Just because we’re in the ME doesn’t mean we don’t get to do Christmas party, of course we do. Including exchanging gifts.
I decided to really make this season memorable and wrote something “unconventional” on my wish list this time. With all the sales going on I thought I should choose something inexpensive yet useful for me to really remember my manita/manito. I was truly thrilled to have gotten what I wanted that I know I wouldn’t buy myself even if I have the cash. (Thank you MJM 😘 )
Yes, my first print was for the holiday and I also decided a motivational printout quote for the new year. I even printed a calendar since I couldn’t get a hold of one without buying from a store. Back home those calendars would have been given by many shops for free as a form of their marketing strategy.
We were also able to do a picnic-shoot in Al Bidda Park and in Aspire Park for Prince’s birthday before the month ended as well. The weather was wonderful that day.
I actually bought a gift for myself after buying one for my habibi. But I’m going to share about it another time. I’m just going to keep this short and simple as I’m actually running out of words already to describe my holiday last month. It’s a bad idea to write about them late. But overall, it was truly a very lovely season to remember.
  Thanks for reading!

Honey and Walnut House in Birmingham

Jury Report
In cleverly minimising new extensions and instead placing focus on opening the primary structure, Intervention Architecture has transformed this humble bungalow. Set within a row of traditional 70s bungalows, the new form is subtly striking and rebalances the proportions to reveal a secret vault of space internally.
Externally the re-alignment of a new roof form, which has been inset to create a parapet with sharper coping lines, establishes a new language to the street, whilst adhering to strict conservation area conditions, with a very simple, full-width extension at the rear of the property. Brick detailing has been delicately varied throughout the façade to represent changes to the perforation of the building façade.

Its upon entry that the building comes alive. The old, suspended ceilings were removed so that the sloping underside of this new roof could be revealed, overhauling an interior that once seemed small and cramped into one that feels bright and spacious.
The floor plan has been designed to work as hard as possible. The new layout divides the house neatly into three zones, with the living spaces in the centre, bedrooms and bathrooms on one side, and garage and utility spaces on the other. While the clients wanted their home to feel open, they were wary of creating a space that felt too cold and minimal. To avoid this, the Architects insisted that the furniture was planned from the outset as a means of subtly dividing space. The joinery details are all bespoke and the language of these is fluent throughout the building.
photo © Handover Agency
The innovative solution creates a lofty, unexpected family space, offsetting lighter honey toned floors, bright surfaces and a birch kids bedroom mezzanine, with darker walnut joinery insertions such as wall paneling, study and kitchen. A large glass sliding door creates a direct link with the kitchen, living area and garden, the light infiltration of this space creates drama throughout the plan.
The opportunity was also utilised as part of the retrofit to upgrade the thermal envelope and achieve improved air tightness beyond building regulations whilst optimising natural cross ventilation with window positioning.

The celebration of the goddess Minerva called Quinquatria traditionally took place on 19 March during heyday of the Roman Republic. (It was so-called because it was held on the fifth (quinqu-) day after the Ides.). Drunken and masked revelers and musicians roamed the streets of Rome and met in the evening in front of the temple of the goddess. A scene depicting Quninquatria activities as well as Minerva in the company of her entourage can still be seen in the frieze decorating Nerva’s forum.
Quinquatria was founded in commemoration of the vowing of a temple to Minerva on the Aventine in 263 BCE. This day was known as artificum dies, “the day of artisans,” as artisans of all kinds took part in the celebrations. In his description of the festival, Ovid highlights Minerva's association with spinning and weaving, as well as with the teaching of other arts and crafts such as shoemaking, painting, and sculpting.
In later accounts of popular mythology, Minerva (who was the Etruscan Menrua and Greek Athena) was chiefly associated wisdom through learning as well as martial prowess and medicine. Together with Jupiter and Juno she formed the Capitoline Triad in Rome, and was also widely worshipped in Etruria. In Etruscan iconography, Minerva is usually depicted in armor, often accompanied by Mars. Images of both Athena and Minerva often show the goddess with her favorite attribute, an owl.
During the Principate, the cult of Minerva spread to the provinces, and the goddess became fused with local deities in Western Europe. The cult of Sulis Minerva in Roman Britain resulted from a fusion between Minerva and the Celtic healing deity Sulis.
