It's come to my attention that November is also Mizrahi Heritage Month! So if you celebrate or are of this ethnicity as well, come to the front of the line! Wanna share your stories and educate us about being #mixed #Mizrahim? Send me a DM!
"It’s #MizrahiHeritageMonth, the days leading up to November 30. In 2014, the Knesset adopted a law designating November 30 as an annual, national day of commemoration for the 850,000 #Jewish refugees who were displaced from #Arab countries and #Iran in the 20th century. It seems like a pretty niche group of people know or recognize it, but we're sure with the help of social media, it will spread.
Celebrating Mizrahi Heritage Month, remembering #Mizrahi experiences is not something everyone feels comfortable doing all year round. For those who do feel comfortable, it may not have always been that way for them, and certainly wasn’t for their parents who left their homes in Yemen, Iran, Iraq, Morocco, etc.
So, we need this month, as a reminder that we have what to celebrate, as a way of elevating stories and histories that haven’t been told, and as a booster for taking pride in our identity.
What I wish, truly, is that Mizrahi Heritage Month wouldn’t exist. That one’s identity wouldn’t be tied to one month a year and that one’s history wouldn’t be discussed only one day during the year. That our history would be taught from a young age to everyone, because it’s all of our history. That we’d know what questions to ask our grandparents. That we’d take pride in how we looked, dressed, and talked all year round.
Until now, we’ve only been telling half the story and until we’re ready to tell it all, I’ll be celebrating Mizrahi Heritage Month." - via @dalrussy
Thanks @itllbeochre for the heads up!

As we mark #MizrahiHeritageMonth, we're highlighting some amazing Mizrahi Jews who have impacted Israel & the world.
Did you know? Beloved Jewish actor Josh Gad who starred as Olaf in Frozen, is of Afghani descent. His father Shmuel was born to a Jewish family in Afghanistan and moved to Israel as a teenager. We ❤️
you, Josh!

My biggest #mixedgirlproblem is feeling like I never belonged to any group and like I didn’t know who I really was. @jesusthemiraculousone: "I'm Orianna. Growing up, high school was... Horrible. To them it was either Black or White. And that was that. Now knowing that my father is #Black #American and my mothers side is #Portuguese #Chinese and #NativeAmerican... It's a strange world we live in. It's interesting because sometimes I feel so left out. Or made to feel guilty when I share the struggle of #beingmixed. Yet everyone feels like I don't have a say because my skin is lighter. My sister on the other hand has darker skin and everyone assumes she is just black when she is mixed. It's frustrating when all people see is color. I see colors. All the time and each time I am amazed at such variety of shades that God gives us. I get fed up. Everyone tries to force me to choose which race or ethnicity I want to be when I am several. But hey! The world turns and will keep turning. As far as my concern goes, the only thing anyone needs to know... Is that I was born from thunder and God's DNA reigns through my veins. That's the only race/ethnicity they need to know." 🏴🇺🇸🇵🇹🇨🇳 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ November is #NativeAmericanHistoryMonth! @alex.ann4: "Hi there - I saw your post looking for #mixednatives, so I would like to share my experience! My name is Alexandria Sharif and I am #Black and #NativeAmerican. I was born into the #MississippiBand of #Choctaw Indians and raised on a small reservation in Tennessee with my Mom and my brother who are both full-blooded. Growing up in Tennessee, I was surrounded by family (literally). I was within walking distance to several aunts, uncles, and cousins, and though I was different, I felt accepted. But when we would travel to the main reservation in Philadelphia, MS, it was a totally different experience. I was teased for my hair, my skin, and even my lips. They knew I didn't speak the language, so they would talk about me in Choctaw. One day when I was maybe 8 or 9, my Mom put me on the bus there to go to summer school. My cousin with whom I was going to attend class was supposed to look after me, but she was so embarrassed of my skin tone that she wouldn't even sit with me. Fortunately for me, I've always had a Warrior Spirit, and I learned to fight back with my words. Eventually, I gained more acceptance through sports and my personality seemed to draw people in. It was rough being ostracized when I was younger, but as I got older, I learned to embrace everything that made me stand out. My hair, my skin, my lips are all beautiful features that make me, ME. I thought I had to pick a side, but I don't. I am #Indigenous AND Black, and I love the woman God made me." 🇺🇸🏴 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ November is #NativeAmericanHistoryMonth! @ellie_villaw90: "Hello! My name is Ellie. I was born in Vermont, #adopted, and grew up in New Hampshire. I am mixed with #Black (#Nigeria, #Ghana, #IvoryCoast, and #Cameroon) and #White (mostly #England & Northwestern #Europe). My biggest #mixedgirlproblem is having a lighter complexion and constantly having to defend my identity. I get questions and hear comments like, “what are you?,” “how can one of your parents be black…you're too light?” and “you don’t act like a half black half white person.” It often feels like society expects me to pick a side: white or black because based on my looks…how could I be & identify as both? As I have gotten older and started connecting with biological family, I have become more confident about my identity and less concerned about fitting into societal and cultural standards/beliefs when it comes to what a #mixedperson should look and act like." 🇳🇬🇬🇭🇨🇮🇨🇲🏴 ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ November is #NativeAmericanHistoryMonth!
