OMG Hagio Moto drew an Eroica tribute, why haven't I seen this?

After seeing Urasawa's Eroica tribute thanks to this post, I bought the latest issue of Mystery Bonita at the speed of light. It said something rather curious on the last page: "We have Shiomi Chika in the next issue!" This could only mean one thing: These Eroica tributes by other manga artists were a thing, and I had been living under a rock!

My little research showed me that to celebrate the 45th anniversary of From Eroica with Love, Mystery Bonita started having guest artists every month starting with their 2021 July issue. As I am unable to get all the magazines (because most of the back issues are no longer on sale as e-books, and even if they were, am I that rich?), I can't confirm whether every artist drew a manga. But here is a list of contributors so far (June 2023): Shitou Ryoko, Sakai Miwa, Mineo Maya, Nanamaki Kanako, Akaishi Michiyo, Nakayama Seika, Aoki Tomm (three times), Toono Yukiko, Ogawa Yayoi, Shima Atsuko, Haruna Remon, Hagio Moto, Takahashi Miyuki, Yamato Waki, Honda, Shitou Kyouko, Hamada Shouko, Urasawa Naoki, Shiomi Chika, Nogami Takeshi, Anno Moyoco, Yamamura Higashi, and Nagano Noriko.

Begging break!: If anyone has old issues of Mystery Bonita, especially the ones from 2021, can you please contact me? They only sell the latest 12 issues on e-book stores, so I can't buy the older ones. It so happens that one of the tributes I'm really curious about, the Mineo Maya one, was published in the 2021/9 issue and I can't get it. I would eternally be grateful for (and depending on the difficulty, might be willing to translate) any Eroica tributes thrown my way.

The Urasawa one is also in the works, but I was literally screaming like a 12 yo girl while reading the Hagio one and I got overexcited. This was published in the June 2022 issue of the magazine, you need to buy that issue if you want it. Thanks to Lucas who kindly delivered these superb 8 pages to us, I literally started working on this the moment I got it while I was fangirling. I'm going to be an oddball and switch between Japanese & English VAs when I find it relevant. Also my order's gonna be based on how strongly I think the headcanon works. I'll also try to provide examples for the angle I'm going for

Tetsuo Tsutsumi Japanese: Option 1 - Akio Otsuka (Executioner from Akudama Drive). Option 2 - Jouji Nakata (Osvald from Octopath Traveler 2) English: Option 1 - Jamieson Price (Malik Caesar from Tales of Graces F). Option 2 - Jason Douglas (Kishibe from Chainsaw Man)

Middle aged men characters are my specialty so really it depends on the delivery you want. Richard Epcar (Ace from 999) could also work for English as well as Bill Butts (Ciocolotta from Jojo part 5)

Makoto Ashimiya/Fumichika Nejima Japanese: Kenjiro Tsuda (Ogata from Golden Kamuy...and also Kishibe from Chainsaw Man). Katsuyuki Konishi could also be a good example but I can't really think of an old man character. I guess Takehito Koyasu could also work? But like this is THE most TsudaKen looking motherfucker I've ever seen English: Joe J. Thomas (Nobunaga Hazama from Hunter x Hunter). His "So I did" line really cemented this casting choice tbh.

Richter Kai Japanese: Shiniciro Miki (Kisuke Urahara from Bleach) English: For this, it depends again on the delivery you want. I originally wanted Doug Erholz (maybe not like Vega from Street Fighter), but upon closer inspection, Ray Chase (Uzui Tengen from Demon Slayer) might be a better pick.

Miller (Sailor Jupiter from Sailor Moon) is also a good pick along with Heather Gonzalez (Cherche from Fire Emblem Heroes) Japanese: Miyuki Sawashiro (Kyoko Honda from Fruits Basket). Nana Mizuki could also work, though I sadly can't think of a role off the top of my head

Going for the woman who grew up a punk vibe

Yutaro Namigaki Japanese: Jun Fukuyama (Draluc from Vampire Dies in No Time) English: It's tempting to put Xander Mobus for the total Joker Persona 5 duology but ehhhhh. It depends on the delivery again. Brian Beacock (Luthier from Fire Emblem Echoes) or Steve Staley (Hubert from Tales of Graces F) could also work tbh. Maybe Lucien Dodge (Waver Velvet from Fate/Zero)

Ayame Touno English: Faye Mata (Amame from AI: The Somnium Files) Japanese: Rie Kugimiya (Rise from Persona 4)

The voices contrast each other, but I think each one compliments the kind of character Ayame is.

Here's where I'm starting to think about 1 solid casting and kinda improvising for the second one. I think the Storyteller changes voices depending on the mask they wear, so for this old man mask, an old man they shall sound like.

Makoto Furukawa (why did I think Ronaldo from Vampire Dies in No Time??) could also work English: I think this will depend on the delivery. Do you want him more cowardly? I kinda see David Vincent tbh (Henri from Iruma-kun)

Hajime Yoshimi English: He could be another potential Patrick Seitz role, but I want to avoid double casting as much as possible. Japanese: Subaru Kimura (Todo from Jujutsu Kaisen)

Hitomi Okuda Japanese: Ai Farouz (Jolyne Kujo from JJBA) English: Option 1 - Laura Stahl (Alear from Fire Emblem Engage); Option 2 - Erica Mendez (can't think of a role off the top of my head)

Characters featured: 

1. Emilia from Re:Zero

Emilia’s softspoken and compassionate nature reminds me of Sharon a lot. Both of them are quite motherly or doting towards those around them as well. However, they can also be incredibly stubborn at times and when they set their mind on something, they will not give up until they’ve reached their goal. Both characters have also lost either their parents or their guardian/the person most dear to them. 

2. Miyuki from Lucky Star

Sharon also falls under the stereotypical ‘ditzy girl with glasses’ and Miyuki is kind of an OG in this category. They also share a lot of aesthetic similarities such as the long, pink hair and the larger chest.

3. Kokoro from Darling in the FRANXX

Their motherly nature is the biggest similarity here, but when watching this anime, a lot of Kokoro’s dialogue reminded me of Sharon. Especially how she knows that sometimes people will hurt her, yet she still wants to keep on interacting/engaging with people. Both characters are also able to look past someone’s flaws and give them a second chance. 

4. Shiraishi-san from Tanaka-kun is always listless

This one is more of an aesthetic similary as well, since Shiraishi-san was the main inspiration when I changed Sharon’s design from her initial one (she used to be a self-insert so she had blue eyes and dark brown hair like me). This is where I got the red glasses and her hair color. uwu Shiraishi-san and Sharon are also equally awkward around their crushes, haha.

5. Megumi Tadokoro from Shokugeki

Both characters have low self-esteem and tend to be quite clumsy. However, they do have a lot of determination and eventually their efforts will bear fruits. uwu

6. Honda Tooru from Fruits Basket

I had never watched Fruits Basket when I originally created Sharon and developed her as a character, but I did watch the remake and during the whole thing I just kept thinking ‘Holy shit this girl is literally Sharon in every way???’ Just the way she behaves and interacts with others reminds me of Sharon’s ditzy moments so much. The Kyo x Tooru ship also gives off big Subaron vibes imo.

Backstory

Azure was the shadow. Azurline was the light. That was how it was supposed to be...well, until Azurline's untimely demise. To cover up the fact that his prized daughter was dead, Callus Peinture staged the death as Azure's.

She was forced to like the things Azurline liked, eat the foods Azurline usually ate and sing the songs Azurline would sing to their father at night. She hated it.

One day, her brother came back from his scholarship at a famous art school to come paint her. She wouldn't let him and threw a tantrum every time he tried. Although he was able to paint her, once. It was while she was unaware and when she found out she threw a fit and locked everyone out. It was on that same day, that she committed suicide, and her soul moved into the portrait of her made by her brother. After a century spent in the boring confines of the grey canvas, she was awoken when a black carriage entered her realm, thus starts her journey at Night Raven College.

Peinture is a callback to the game, and is the name of the music played when painting.

Azure is French (this was decided because all of the soundtracks were French named)

Azure has killed many a painter who dare to try and finish her before her brother. Only her brother has that privilege, in every life. Which is why she still is in black and white smh

The magic mirror's initially choice was Heartslabyul, however it ultimately decided on Terrovania

🥇 My 2022 Anime Review! ✨

The year 2022 ends in two weeks, so just like last year, it is time for me to review my 2022 anime year and give some rewards! I've watched many different things this year - and it's been incredibly entertaining.

As an FYI: this is a review of what I watched this year. It will not only feature animes that aired in 2022. Also, these are my opinions, which you may disagree with. Please don't be offended if my views are different from yours.

With that said, let's begin!

First anime watched this year: Haikyuu!!

I knew my anime year was off to a good start when the very first I watched was so great. Haikyuu doesn't need to be praised any more than it already was - and the final two movies should be a ton of fun to close out this series.

Last anime watched this year: Cyberpunk: Edgerunners

I finished the year with a gorgeous Netflix exclusive that aired just a few months ago at the time of this review. Though short to my taste, it was still a good show!

Worst anime watched this year: No Game No Life

I'm sorry to any NGNL fans who may read this, but this anime sucks. I went into detail in my review, but I found this anime pretty disgusting and boring to watch. The fanservice is horrendous, and the plot is uninteresting. For some reason, though, the movie was excellent. Go figure... There are better awards to get!

"Honorable" mentions: Kiss Him, Not Me! and A Whisker Away.

Prettiest anime watched this year: Demon Slayer S2

Was there any room for debate for this category? There wasn't, right? I don't need to explain this further. KNY has reached a level of animation that will probably not be equaled for quite a while...

Honorable mentions: Cyberpunk: Edgerunners and Kill la Kill.

Best plot in an anime watched this year: Death Note

It's a classic; I'm not taking many risks with this one. Sure, the second part wasn't as much of a masterpiece as the first one, but we're talking legendary status here. Death Note has the perfect combo of mystery, psychology, and drama. I was entertained from beginning to end, and the plot is one of the reasons why.

Honorable mentions: Attack on Titan and Steins;Gate.

Best action scene watched this year: Asta & Yami vs. Dante (Black Clover)

This choice was very hard, admittedly. It's not necessarily the prettiest in terms of animation (even if it remains gorgeous), but it had me vibrate the most. There's so much going on during that fight, and it comes at a moment in the anime that makes it even better. Close call, but it gets the nod!

Honorable mentions: Uzui & Tanjiro vs. Gyutaro (Demon Slayer S2) and Black Bulls vs. Vetto (Black Clover).

Best romance in an anime watched this year: Kaguya Shinomiya & Miyuki Shirogane (Kaguya-sama: Love is War)

Another difficult call to make here, but the protagonists from Kaguya-sama get it. They fit their anime perfectly, and Season Three was a masterpiece, winning them my vote. Two cuties!

Honorable mentions: Rintaro Okabe & Kurisu Makise (Steins;Gate) and Kyo Sohma and Tohru Honda (Fruits Basket).

Funniest anime watched this year: Kaguya-sama: Love is War

Another award for this anime. Honestly, it gets it thanks to the narrator - the best human ever to live on this planet. I laughed more than I care to admit when watching this anime - which is incredible when you know it's not only a comedy but much more than that.

Honorable mentions: Food Wars! and Spy x Family.

Saddest anime watched this year: Clannad

Clannad is known to be a tear-jerker, so this is not a big surprise. The first season may not have been remarkable, but Afterstory is a freaking masterpiece that made me bawl my eyes out like a little baby - and I'm not ashamed to say it.

Honorable mentions: I Want to Eat Your Pancreas and Steins;Gate.

Best opening in an anime watched this year: Shinzou wo Sasageyo! (Attack on Titan)

Do you think there's anything to be said about this opening? It slams like every SNK opening, but this one always gives me goosebumps. It's intense, it looks beautiful, and it hits so, so hard.

Honorable mentions: Dive Back In Time (Link Click) and Black Catcher (Black Clover)

Best scene in an anime watched this year: Attack on Titan

I won't describe it here not to spoil people who may not have seen it, but it's in the second part of Season Three. It has earned legendary status without even featuring the protagonist, which is remarkable.

Honorable mentions: Kaguya-sama: Love is War, Assassination Classroom and Haikyuu!!

Worst character in an anime watched this year: Kyuubey (Madoka Magica)

Another difficult call to make here, but I've decided to go with this insufferable cat. Anyone who's watched Madoka Magica knows how annoying he is, even if there was competition!

"Honorable" mentions: Makoto Hanamiya (Kuroko no Basketball) and Langris Vaude (Black Clover)

Best character in an anime watched this year: Yami Sukehiro (Black Clover)

Words aren't enough to understand how much I love this dude. He singlehandedly made Black Clover unique for me, and I have no doubt he'll continue moving forward. He outclasses everyone else by a mile, and his memorable moments are numerous. Add a charismatic personality, and you get one heck of a character.

Honorable mentions: Kaguya Shinomiya (Kaguya-sama: Love is War) and Anya Forger (Spy x Family).

Best anime watched this year: Attack on Titan and Death Note

I simply couldn't choose. Both are timeless masterpieces (the former isn't even finished yet) with more incredible moments than I could count. Earlier this year, my pick would have been Spy x Family, but in the end, it has to be these two. Eren Yaeger and Light Yagami are legendary characters; both plots are incredibly well-crafted, the casts are amongst the most famous ever, and the excitement I felt when watching those two animes was greater than any other this year. Simply incredible.

Honorable mentions: Spy x Family, Haikyuu!!, Kaguya-sama: Love is War, Demon Slayer S2, Black Clover, Fruits Basket...

Those took me more thought than you might think, but I'm satisfied with those picks. I've watched plenty of excellent animes this year, meaning 2023 will probably be a lighter year. Nevertheless, masterpieces are still waiting for me to watch, so I'm not too worried!

To finish this post, here are my tierlists for the year! Like last year, there's one for openings, one for main characters, and one for anime entries! Just so you know, the main characters are those with that title on MyAnimeList, and the anime entries are those with a page on MAL. Also, those are organized chronologically, meaning there's no difference within the ranks between left and right.

First off, the openings!

As you can see, there are basically none I didn't enjoy listening to, and a good number of them are either great or even better.

Next, the main characters!

As you can see, there are a lot. 294, to be precise. It was not always easy to keep this one coherent, but it reflects my thoughts well.

Last but not least, the most important tierlist: the one for the animes themselves!

I think this one shows how much I require to put something into the S+++ tier, as even some animes I could praise for days fall short. Still, it shows how many beautiful things I've watched this year and all the fun I've had. Happy times, let me tell you!
