"Oh, Kiyoka! Good Morning!" Her head turns as her fiance joins her on the outside deck. Miyo had finished breakfast preparations a bit earlier than usual, and decided to just enjoy the sounds of nature as she waited for him. Truth be told, she was a bit too excited and just couldn't help herself.

The two had planned a town outing this afternoon since he had the day off, as it turns out. Outings had become some of her favorite ways to spend time with the man so dear to her. So, it was only natural for her to anticipate the exciting day that was to come.

"I hope you rested well. Breakfast is already prepared and is being kept warm for us. Yurie-san is here as well."

Hana frowned lightly, more thoughtful than in sincere annoyance, thought not at Miyoko, never them; sweet, lovely Miyoko, who had the misfortune of being born to a despicable man, just like Hana herself.

And that's the thing, the root of the problem: when one (or both) of your parents is bad, you can't help but wonder just how much you resemble them, how many of the things that made them bad you've inherited, if the poison in their soul is an innate trait that's simply dormant in you and will one day awaken...

Hana understands all too well, feels a pain like Miyoko's in her very soul everytime she thinks about her father, who had let his resentment towards his mother turn him into the boogeyman of his children's nightmares...

"I have my grandmother's Quirk. That doesn't make me a hero. Not like her. Never like her." Hana signs in response, then takes Miyoko's face in her hands gently, so that they're eye-to-eye, her expression oh-so-fond and full of love.

"Having that man's Quirk doesn't make you like him. Your rage is righteous, it's a rage against the injustices of the world and wanting to fix them. You'd never do what that man did. You're a good person, Miyo-chan. Never doubt it. And if you ever do, then never doubt me, because I believe in you. Always and forever."

“Miyo.” Her name is a choked sob on his lips, and in the same moment she is at his side. “Miyo,” he cries out again, and when his voice catches, she wonders if it will shatter her into a thousand pieces. “Where are you?”

“I’m here, my lord,” she gasps out, but he does not wake. She searches for his hand in the folds of the coverlet and holds it. His skin is ice cold against hers. “Please, my lord, wake up. I’m here.”

Still he does not wake, and in the thin light that slips through the window, she sees the silvery tracks of tears on his face. Gentle as can be, she smudges them away with her thumb, and it is at her touch that he finally relaxes, letting out a shuddering breath.

Watching My Happy Marriage ep 1: Oh so she was abuse and will soon melt the ice mage heart. Got it. Watching ep 1: Oh! Oh! She was abused abused! Not media abuse where it's vague but actually abused. Holy shit! I didn't realize the affects until she start showing signs in the other house. My goodness! I hope she will be able to smile and laugh. Also, she really doesn't need the other boy. He didn't do anything and, if he's still close her family, then he really need to leave her alone. I know he says he will help but...he doesn't really have any power. P double S screw that dad for mistreating her. I can understand you being sad about your first wife death but to allow slander and mistreatment of your daughter is bullcrap.

Yeah, Miyo goes through some horrifying and awful stuff, and we've barely scratched the surface: the first volume of the LN goes into even more detail as to how badly the Saimoris treated her and how awful her life was (neither part of the Saimoris nor allowed to be with the servants, having to eat the scraps left of food or go hungry, making-by in cooking, being handed down kimonos at the end of their lives, and don't get me started on the psychological abuse too...).

What I like about Kiyoka's approach (as compared to Koji's) is that he doesn't treat Miyo with the intention to 'save' her or 'heal' her: he knows that it all has to come from her, so he supports her and offers her a place where she can be safe and loved and start dealing with the sequel of her abuse.

Shinichi (Miyo's dad) is just a piece of shit all around, taking his issues with being forced to marry Miyo's mom on Miyo once he had a better daughter at hand (Kaya + her supernatural powers). Screw him

My Happy Marriage Episode 2 Review: Supernatural World Building

First off, I want to correct myself on something. Last episode, I said that the anime took place in Taisho Era? Someone on Tumblr corrected me, saying that the anime actually takes place in Meiji era. Thank you to the person who corrected me.

Anyways, this episode is about Miyo adjusting to her life in the Kudou manor. She makes breakfast for her fiancé, but he refuses to eat, suspecting it to be poisoned. Fortunately, he regrets his actions and tries her breakfast the next day; he really enjoys her miso soup, to her surprise.

We learn more about Kiyoka and Miyo throughout this episode. Miyo is someone who lived such a harsh life. Her family is a prominent family with supernatural abilities, but she did not receive any, hence her mistreatment towards her biological father and her stepmother. As a child, she was a bit straightforward as she was looking for mementos of her mother that had gone missing; she had suspected her stepmother and it caused her to be locked in a storage room. Damn, I hate Miyo’s family so much. I think what the most heart wrenching moment was the fact that Kaya was able to see Grotesqueries and her biological father starts doting on her than his first daughter. I just want to punch all three of them.

The abuse has caused her to be so withdrawn that she had to apologize to protect herself. I can actually relate to the apologizing; I once had a bad habit of apologizing a lot when I was a teenager because I had hurt my friends who in turn decided to isolate me. Because I didn’t want to feel hurt again, most of my teenage years was spent me apologizing out of habit. Kiyoka even said that apologizing loses its meaning if constantly said, which is super understandable; I apologized so much that I was wondering if my apologies were actually genuine once I reached my early twenties. Fortunately, I am no longer apologetic now. It was a bad habit to break out of.

Kiyoka seemed like a jerk at first, but it was understandable why he was doubtful. He explained to Yurie that his past fiancees only wanted wealth and status from him, which is a turn off for him. It also seems that he’s the commander of an Anti-Grotesquerie unit. I guess this explains the premise of the show—fighting grotesqueries? Kiyoka has supernatural abilities which he can use easily; it even has convenient usage like heating up a bath. I’m glad that Kiyoka knows that his words had hurt Miyo, so he made it up to her by eating her breakfast. It seems that he is quite interested in her background as she doesn’t look like a daughter from a prominent family.

Yurie is very sweet. She has known Kiyoka the longest so she knows what sort of person he is. She even tells Miyo that he is actually a kind person underneath his ice. Since Miyo didn’t run off, it makes me wonder how many fiancees didn’t listen to Yurie’s words and just ran off.

Meanwhile, at the Saimori house, Miyo’s old room is being used as a storage room. Kouji is determined to protect Miyo however he can. However, it also seems as if the Tatsuishi family was wanting Miyo to marry Kouji and not Kaya as she has Usuba blood or something. It seems that Miyo’s a lot more special than she seems…

I want to talk about the voice acting. It’s amazing. Reina Ueda is known for her soft tone, but to make Miyo a bit older, she makes her voice a bit deeper, but still has her signature soft voice perfect for a soft-spoken person like Miyo. I can hear Ueda also sounding lifeless which also fits Miyo. Kaito Ishikawa is nailing it as Kiyoka. I’ve never heard him use such a calm voice and I think he should get more roles like this in the future! It’s so nice to listen too!

I’m honestly enjoying this anime. I can’t wait to see more now that we have a bit more world-building withe the insertion of Grotesqueries, supernatural abilities and so forth. I can’t wait to see what it is that makes Miyo so special. Most of all, I want to see Kiyoka warm up to Miyo and for Miyo to open up to him. I can see potential!

🥇 My 2023 anime awards! ✨

Hello! Since we're slowly approaching the end of 2023, I wanted to give awards to the animes I've watched this year, just like I did in 2021 and 2022!

Before we start off, I want to clarify two things. Firstly, this list contains animes I've watched this year, not necessarily animes that have aired this year (though there are some of those, too). Secondly, these are my opinions, which you may disagree with. Please be sure to stay respectful. With that said, let's begin!

First anime watched this year: My Hero Academia

I began 2023 with the well-known MHA. I doubt it requires an introduction, as it is one of the most famous animes out there, but I wanted to say that, even if it has some lows (especially in S5), it remains a great anime that deserves the recognition it gets.

Last anime watched this year: Ao Haru Ride

I actually finished watching this one today. It was a pretty good ride (pun intended), though it did leave me a little disappointed. Still, it makes for a good romance/character study show, which I recommend.

Worst anime watched this year: Abunai Sisters: Koko & Mika

Do not watch this sh*t. Or, you can, to have a laugh. It is evident in my mind that this anime is the worst one in existence. Nothing in this piece of garbage is done even remotely correctly, so save yourself the trouble.

Prettiest anime watched this year: Oshi No Ko

If there's one thing I can't take away from Oshi No Ko, it's how beautiful it looks. We were all hooked on the art and animation from the first second, which then stuck. The character design, in particular, is breathtaking.

Honorable mentions: Demon Slayer S3, Insomniacs After School, Call of the Night

Best plot in an anime watched this year: Monster

It has aged like fine wine. Monster has many qualities, but its plot is the first one that comes to mind. It is the near-perfect combo of suspense, adventure, and psychology. It perfectly fits with the art style and the characters, too! A great gem!

Honorable mentions: Hunter x Hunter, Code Geass, Black Lagoon

Best action scene in an anime watched this year: Netero vs. Meruem (Hunter x Hunter)

I did not hesitate for even a second when choosing the winner for this category. Of all the scenes that make HxH such a unique experience, this one stood out the most. It is the climax of one of the best arcs in Shonen history, executed perfectly. I have shivers just thinking about it!

Honorable mentions: All Might vs. All for One (My Hero Academia), The Final Confrontation (Attack on Titan Finale), Sukuna vs. Jogo (Jujutsu Kaisen S2)

Best romance in an anime watched this year: Fuyutsuki-san & Himuro-kun (The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague)

I'll deal with these two in more length later in this post, but I absolutely adored Fuyutsuki and Himuro's relationship. Everything about them made me a silly, blushing mess. They're straightforward characters when you think about it, but perhaps it's part of what makes them such great characters in my mind. I love them!!

Honorable mentions: Miyo & Kiyoka (My Happy Marriage), Tomo & Jun (Tomo-chan is a Girl!), Ganta & Isaki (Insomniacs After School)

Funniest anime watched this year: Great Teacher Onizuka

GTO's a classic and for all the right reasons. You cannot stop yourself from laughing at Onizuka's antics. Nonetheless, GTO remains more than a mere comedy. It's this mix of humor and seriousness that makes the funny scenes even funnier.

Honorable mentions: Buddy Daddies, Nodame Cantabile, Spy x Family S2

Saddest anime watched this year: Hunter x Hunter

Thinking that HxH is a childish show based on the first few episodes alone is a grave mistake. This adventure is a rollercoaster of emotions, and a few scenes, in particular, come to mind that will most likely make you tear up. Even if it can be painful at the moment, these events are part of what makes this show legendary!

Honorable mentions: Oshi No Ko, Attack on Titan Finale, Code Geass

Best opening in an anime watched this year: History Maker (Yuri!!! On ICE)

This anime is well-known for many things, but its opening theme is cruelly underrated! It fits the show to a T and is so catchy and fun to listen to! I've undoubtedly listened to it dozens of times during the year, and it's one of my favorites overall! Kudos to Dean Fujioka for such a masterpiece!

Honorable mentions: Venus Line (Birdie Wing: Golf Girls Story), Idol (Oshi No Ko), VORTEX (Link Click S2)

Best ending in an anime watched this year: Tokyo et Paris (Nodame Cantabile)

Such a fantastic song for such an underappreciated show! It has definitely gone off the radar due to being from a relatively unknown anime, but I loved this theme from the first time I listened to it! It's not the style of music I typically listen to, but it makes a great change of pace, and it totally fits with the ambiance of the anime!

Honorable mentions: Mephisto (Oshi No Ko), yurukuru love (Tomo-chan is a Girl!), Yofukashi no Uta (Call of the Night)

Best scene in an anime watched this year: Hunter x Hunter

I'm not gonna be able to go in-depth about this scene due to risks of spoilers, but fans of the show probably know what scene I'm referring to here. I'll just say that it punctuated a fantastic moment in the story and closed an arc in the most remarkable of ways. Truly splendid.

Honorable mentions: Oshi No Ko, Attack on Titan Finale, My Hero Academia

Worst character in an anime watched this year: Koko & Mika Abunai (Abunai Sisters)

They're pieces of cr*p, in short. I don't even want to talk about them since their whole existence is a mistake and should be avoided at all costs. See, flawed characters can have redeeming features. Not only do they have none, they're enough to worsen the whole industry.

Honorable mentions: Miyabi Aizawa (GTO), Minami Uezono (Ex-Arm), Mikio Tanuki (A Girl & Her Guard Dog)

Best character in an anime watched this year: Fuyutsuki-san (The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague)

I kinda went over why I love her so much in an earlier category, but I just want to reiterate: she makes me happy. The thought of her (but also of Himuro) is enough to make me smile. Whether it's her voice, her design, her personality, her bonds with the others... Everything about her is so excellent; I can't help but love her. She'll go unnoticed because she is from a show that's not so popular, but that doesn't make her any less fantastic.

Honorable mentions: Himuro-kun (The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague), Lelouch Lamperouge (Code Geass), Eren Yaeger (Attack on Titan)

Best anime watched this year: The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague

I think it was somewhat predictable, thanks to the huge amounts of praise I gave the show earlier, but this award, probably the most important, has gotta go to this anime. It also aired this year! Tuesdays were days I was looking forward to last winter for this show alone, and it definitely helped me get through tough times. You probably will hear very little about it as it's not a big production, but it had everything I watch anime for: the music, the art, the cast, the relationships, the cute moments... I even bought the manga to know the rest of the story, which I usually never do! Hopefully, we get a second season someday, though I'm slightly worried. In any case, if you're into cute workplace romances, I can't help but recommend this anime a million times. You won't regret it.

Honorable mentions: Hunter x Hunter, Perfect Blue, Insomniacs After School

Overall, 2023's been another excellent year of anime, whether for me or the community as a whole. We got a ton of fantastic shows and great sequels. I'm personally looking forward to more of the same next year, with great names either airing or coming back!
