A Nova Sensação
“VR requires immersion in a virtual environment without sensory knowledge of the world around you. AR instead overlays virtual 3D objects over the real world to create a sense that they’re in front of you, requiring you to be aware of your surroundings.”
“'VR is a totally occluded experience,’ says Fouché. In other words, he says, it’s ‘completely closed off from your natural world.’ So, it should be a different reality that you can see, hear, and interact with.”
"The killer one problem was: Google Glass made everyone around you feel uneasy. They thought the technology was creepy, intrusive and privacy-destroying."
“Mixed reality is the result of blending the physical world with the digital world. Mixed reality is the next evolution in human, computer, and environment interaction and unlocks possibilities that before now were restricted to our imaginations. It is made possible by advancements in computer vision, graphical processing power, display technology, and input systems.”
“Our physical and virtual realities are becoming increasingly intertwined. Technologies such as VR, augmented reality, wearables, and the internet of things are pointing to a world where technology will envelop every aspect of our lives.”
youtube

Augmented Reality Opportunities and Challenges
Today’s world is strongly digitally enabled, such that the distinction between reality and digital is fuzzy. This fact strongly infers the fact of increased adoption of digital technology. According to the Gartner’s Research [1] Augmented Reality (AR)is one among the top 10 disruptive technologies of 2017. It is also predicted that AR will over-rule the existing competing technologies in terms of market value. With the advent of novel digital business models and ecosystems, there seem to be a massive change in business and customer relationship
AR AT A GLIMPSE
Augmented Reality had its baby steps in 1962, when the Scientist Morton Heilig invented “Sensorama” [2] simulator which is capable of working with visual, sound, vibration and smell as input. The first real-time AR application was Heads-up Display(HuD) developed in 1960s. HuD application is developed for pilots to make them concentrate on the line-of-sight and thereby eliminating the risk of distraction by looking at instruments. Today HuD is adapted by several car manufacturing companies including BMW, which is considered as one of the pioneers in automobile industry. Augmented Reality is an enhancement of real world where the real environment is substituted by computer generated images, thereby adding up to existing reality. “Augmented Reality” term was first coined by the researcher Tom Caudell in 1990. Virtual Reality on the other hand is a completely immersive technology, where the exact reality is approximated. Augmented Reality differs from other forms of technology as it has a direct influence the perception of human mind thought process. AR synergizes digital and virtual information with the real world.
IKEA App [3] makes the best use of AR to give a preview of how a furniture will look like and how well it suits the room. The biggest advantage is that the preview is obtained even before buying the furniture. MITSUBISHI App [4] is an AR based App to view the products how will it appear inside the room, for example the location and size of the Air Conditioner that suits the room can be concluded before purchasing the equipment. AR also finds its usability in art museums, where the painting is captured in the camera and information regarding a particular paining, for example information about the painter, cost and size will be displayed. Another potential application of AR is in Google Glass [5] to capture picture and video, get directions, transmit or receive messages and to get accurate information about a resource. Google glass is launched in 2014, but it received a lot of criticism from the public with an argument to ban the glasses, as it distracts the users and pose privacy challenges. The future of AR would be in building Augmented City, where every surface can project salient features of it.
GOOLE TANGO AR PLATFORM
Several futuristic applications could be built and deployed with Google Tango. Dinosaur App [6] was developed by American Museum for Natural History. By using the App it possible to rotate, resize or provide locomotion to dinosaurs, within the indoor space. Lenovo AR camera app is capable of generating little dinosaur or dragon. Using Wayfair View App [7] it is possible to preview the furniture, tables, lighting. Another App that could be used for preview of furniture and appliances is by using Vision Home Decorating Tool App[8]. Amazon Product Preview Tango App [9] is capable of previewing the Television on wall and to decide upon which Television size suits the room. Renovating house by previewing different flooring, different window styles or a painting could be achieved through AR. Another App for renovating the house is by using Magic Plan App, which works on non-Google Tango devices also. However, Magic Plan App works at its best in Google Tango devices. It employs two cameras, depth camera and motion tracking camera for accurate room screening. Magic Plan App [10] is used extensively by interior designers, real estate agents, architects etc. Google Measurement Tango App [11] can be substituted for measuring tape. This App is proved to work precisely in indoors. The App is capable of measuring height, width and even volume of the object. Solar Simulator Tango App [12] mimics the solar system in living room. HOLO App developed at 8i [13], is proved successful in working with holograms.
In today’s busy schedule it may be difficult for people to raise a pet. For such pet lovers, Raise App [14] is a boon. Raise App built with Lenovo AR camera, express the capacity to feed the pet and take care of his health. Bubbles App simulate bubbles in a Google Tango enabled device. Bubbles have the feature of bursting when the bubble hits real world objects.
AR in FACEBOOK
Mark Zuckerbad, Founder of Facebook, portrayed in F8 Developer Conference, 2017 that AR help mix digital and physical data in all new ways thereby making physical reality better. Three major building blocks of AR according to Mark Zuckerbad are:
1. Precise Location-achieved by Simultaneous Localization and Mapping (SLAM)
2. 3D Effects- capture and interact scenes in 3D at a higher precision rate
3. Object Recognition- Real-time visual understanding
AR Sandbox
Augmented Reality Sandbox [15] is developed by Scientist Craig Beals in 2014. Sandbox employs 250 pounds of super fine white sand which is highly reflective. 360 degree i-ball is made to focus on sandbox surface, on which the sand could be heaped and furrowed to display the topological lines on top of the sand. Topography depicts the contours of the land. AR Sandbox could serve as an ideal handy tool for teachers and professors who teach Geography.
MIXED REALITY
Most likely disruptive technologies to ruin real life human computer interaction by 2036 is Mixed Reality [16]. Unlike Virtual Reality which pulls us entirely into different world, mixed reality focus on taking digital world and pulling in out with real world. In future days, it will be possible with AR, for a student to wear a pair of glasses and live in a room covered in hologram screen and attend University classes. Mixed reality is a “passive engagement”, meaning that it is not necessary for a person to sit in a place and experience mixed reality.

An afternoon with Avegant’s prototype light field display headset
I’ve seen the light.
A few weeks ago, Avegant showed off an early look at some of the crazy tech it has been working on that — in its most simple terms — seeks to make head-mounted displays function more like human eyes. It’s an ambitious goal with more than a few interested parties. Many top tech execs and investors have high expectations for smart glasses to usher in the next computing platform wave, but in order to do that there are some major, non-trivial advances in near-eye display tech that will need to happen.
One of the most-hyped and least-seen technologies that will allegedly solve many of these problems is “light field technology,” which Avegant is using this bulky feature prototype to showcase.
TechCrunch had the opportunity to bring cameras in and capture early demos of the prototype headset while also getting the chance to chat with Avegant CTO Edward Tang, who was available to offer a little clarity as to what “light field displays” actually are….

NASA is using a mixed reality space station to train astronauts
NASA has always embraced emerging technology for visualization, even if that tech was seemingly developed for frivolous entertainment. We recently covered its holographic Mars exhibit, and the many 3D resources that NASA makes available to developers and educators. Now, the US space agency has partnered with Epic Games’ Unreal Engine to create a mixed reality International Space Station simulator.
To become a qualified NASA astronaut, candidates spend up to two years of training learning the ropes through intensive classes and simulations that help them prepare for working while weightless, navigating around different parts of the space shuttle and international space station, and serving as each others’ emergency medical technicians, among other things.
In the past, astronaut training meant dives in a “neutral buoyancy lab,” a giant pool that holds 6.2 million gallons of water, and spending time at NASA’s “space vehicle mock-up facility,” a life-sized…

Sundance merges VR with real life through props, AR, and vibrating suits
You can’t try this at home, even if you wanted to. Today’s premiere of the 2017 Sundance Film Festival’s New Frontier exhibit proved there are vivid opportunities for a third kind of virtual reality beyond tethered and mobile: VR installations. Outside the headset, custom art and physical effects set the scene before you enter, deepen the immersion while you’re enveloped in VR, and cement the memory after you emerge.
This is the evolution of VR. Head-mounted TV screens gave way to motion tracking and the ability to walk around. Haptic controllers let us see and feel our hands. But now vibrating suits, elaborate settings, fantastical props, projections, augmented reality, and scenes you act out push VR experiences into meatspace.
Here’s how the next generation of story tellers are putting the reality back in virtual reality.
Crystal Vibes, Rez Infinite, and the full-body Synesthesia Suit
The most visceral collision of VR and our traditional plane of existence comes…
