Happy Birthday Smriti Mandhana- More than just a pretty face

Indian opener Smriti Mandhana has turned a year older and is celebrating her 25th birthday today (July 18). One of the youngest players to play for Team India, Mandhana had made her T20I and ODI debut at the age of 16. Although she had been part of international cricket for 4 years, the world cricket took note of her batting abilities in the 2017 World Cup.

The left-handed batter played a pivotal role in Team India gaining much-needed attention after her scores of 90 and 106* in the first two matches. Though her form dipped after the two fixtures, Mandhana remained to be a permanent member of the side and continues to face the new ball.

One of the senior members of the side now, Mandhana has played 3 Tests, 59 ODIs and 81 T20Is in her career. She has 167 runs in the longest format, 2253 runs in 50-over cricket and 1901 runs in the shortest format. Given her age, Mandhana can very well represent Team India for at least another decade. Mandhana is the youngest ever Indian player to lead the national side in the shortest format. She created history in the opening T20I of the series against England in 2019. The fall-out from this loss was massive, not least because reports of a rift between senior batsman Mithali Raj and coach Ramesh Powar came to dominate the news and eventually led to the latter’s contract not being renewed.

Since then, under new coach WV Raman, there has been a focus on trying to change the team’s style of play and put more of an emphasis on a fearless batting approach. The work has yielded results but it remains to be seen whether this new-look youthful side will succeed where the previous side – which was more experienced – failed.

A look back at India’s results since that semi-final loss shows a gradual growth in terms of performances yet old problems remain and often come to the fore when least needed.

Back-to-back Series Whitewashes

India’s first T20I series after the T20 World Cup was a tough one – a three-match assignment away to New Zealand. Despite commendable performances from Smriti Mandhana and Jemimah Rodrigues, the side could not register a single win in the series with the home side completing a clean sweep.

The main issue for the side was an over-reliance on their top batsmen – the fact that Harmanpreet had a forgettable series and that Mithali didn’t even feature until the final match didn’t help matters.

The lower-middle order didn’t contribute enough and as a result, India suffered whenever any of the top batsmen failed to produce the goods.

This was followed by a home series against England featuring three matches, with Mandhana handed the reins in the absence of Harmanpreet. The added responsibility did seem to affect her batting – she made 2 and 12 in the first two matches – but she produced a valiant 58 in the final match.

India experimented with youngster Harleen Deol atop the order but the Punjab batsman struggled against the English bowlers. The English batsmen were also more consistent and as such they too were able to register a 3-0 clean sweep over the hosts.

South Africa, West Indies Series Wins Provide Relief

India’s next T20I assignment was a six-match series against South Africa at home. The second and third match of the series were washed out, yet the result – a 3-1 win for the home team – boded well for them. It was also the series that saw the emergence of one Shafali Verma.

The 15-year old added a different dimension to the Indian batting line-up atop the order with her ability to hit the ball a long way and score quickly. This was best demonstrated by her 33-ball 46 in the second T20I.

While she didn’t deliver in the other matches, there were enough signs of good things to come from the promising youngster. To aid matters, various members of the batting line-up chipped in as and when necessary.

Shafali’s star shone brightest during the five-match T20I series that followed. She scored commanding half-centuries in the first and second T20I, winning the Player of the Match in the opening game of the series.

The series also saw India’s spinners do plenty of damage to the opposition, giving a clear indicator on how India planned to approach T20Is going forward – a top-heavy batting line-up that could score at will as well as a spin-heavy attack that could both stem the flow of runs and take regular wickets.

India won the series 5-0 and it seemed like a coming-of-age moment for a side that featured plenty of young players.

Old Demons Resurface in Tri-series

India’s final preparation before the T20 World Cup came in the form of a tri-series featuring England and hosts Australia. The series was seen as a tough test for the young side ahead of the tournament.

Since each side won and lost two games, the finalists were decided on the basis of Net Run Rate (NRR). Australia and India contested the final and India ended up coming short by 11 runs, although the loss will have hurt more given the manner in which it took place.

Chasing 156 to win, India had started well and looked in control of things. Harmanpreet and Mandhana were at the crease and only 41 runs were needed off 35 balls, with India having seven wickets in hand.

Mandhana’s dismissal, however, triggered a collapse and India were left wondering what could have been. While the side was relatively different, it brought back memories of the collapse in the final of the 50-over World Cup in 2017.

To make matters worse, India’s two losses in the series – one each to England and Australia – followed similar patterns. The middle-order did not do enough and the pressure on Mandhana, Harmanpreet, Shafali and Jemimah to conjure up some individual brilliance was evident.

India’s wins over England and Australia saw these four batsman do the bulk of the scoring. Given that both Shafali and Jemimah are young and still learning their trade, putting such pressure on them and expecting top-level consistency is a questionable strategy.

The bowling unit generally looked the part through the series, although how they fare in batter-friendly conditions that will offer little assistance to spin bowling remains to be seen.

In conclusion, India’s chances of ending the tournament victorious will depend largely on how well their top batsman fare – but also on the overall temperament of the side and their ability to fight back when the chips are down.

Anderson took 4-4 in early morning spell to dismiss SA t 335, Ball was still siwinging. Morkel and Philander would be handy on such wickets. Cook and Jennings felt that as both were dismissed reducing England to 3-2 in 5 overs.Root joined Ballance. Root's form has been exemplary but the innings which he played was totally world class. In swinging condictions he scored a 43 ball fifty to take ENgland to 85-2 by Lunch. Ballance was struggling at the other end. Post lunch, Philander castled Ballance. Bairstwo and Root had a 57 run stand. SA struggled to keep the intensity created by Morkel and Philander. Oliver and Morris struggled. But Morkel turned the match by dismissing Root for 78. from 143-3, England were dismissed for 205.Morris and Maharaj grabbed 3 each as SA gained a massive 130 runs lead. Anderson picked 5th wicket of the day as Kuhn was out early. Amla and Elgar took SA to safety by end of days play. SA ended day at 75-1.SA ead by 205 runs with 9 wickets in hand. Its their match to lose. What an amazing turnaround after after first set loss.</p>

<p>Muguruza took everybody by surprise by shocking in Serena Williams in last year's French open in straight sets. Her all round game with amazing forehand was key to her success. She played big points very well in that final. Against Venus who is a legend in Wimbledon center court, she had to bring her A game. There is a story around her coach as well. In 1994, Conchita Martinez became first SPanish player to win Wimbledon . It was her only slam. She had beaten Martina in that final. It was Martina's last slam final . Had Martina won, it would have been her 10th Wimbledon title. Fast Forward. Conchita Martinez is now coaching Muguruza. No other spanish ladies player had won Wimbledon since then. Venus is towards the end of her career as well. So scene was pretty much similar to that of 1994. Both started serving well. Till 6th game, there was no breakpoints. Venus saved a break point in 6th game. In 7th game, Venus had 2 break points but couldnt convert. 10th game was the game which turned the match. venus had 2 break and set points at 15-40. venus Williams had a passing shot to win but Muguruza held her nerve. Her defensive tactics ensured she brought it back to deuce. She won that game. Post that Venus was not in her self. She lost the set 7-5. She lost second set 6-0. Muguruza is the new Wimbledon champion. It was shocking to see Venus losing last 9 games in a row. She hardly fought in last few games. Muguruza has played solid tennis this week and deserves her 2nd slam. Conchita Martinez has passed the baton to her prodegy. In last 2 years, there are signs that womens tennis has few future stars lining up. Its not that they would win a slam and vanish. Muguruza and Kerber has won 2 slams each in last 18 months. Ostapenko looks like a player who can win much more. Next gen is lining up. That same cant be said about mens tennis. When Djokovic and Murray have been struggling this year, its not Raonic or Dimirov or Zverev who have taken charge but veterans Federer and Nadal who have found renewed magic. Its great to see these legends winning again. But it does not show good light on next egn players. Who are going to win mens slam 3 years down the lane when all BIG 5 would have retired ???/</p>

India have completely turned the table in their favour in the 2020 edition of the Women’s T20 World Cup. The team scored an ordinary total of 132 in the 1st match against the defending champions Australia but what happened there after became a trend. India bundled out the favorites for just 115 runs and won the match by 17-run. A tremor was felt across all the team, courtesy this really gutsy performance by the Indians.

The next matches saw India repeating the performance as India won all their matches without scoring a single 150-plus score in the tournament. If the batting order has collapsed after the departure of 16-year-old power house Shafali Verma then the bowlers have done the job to assure the team a victory.

As Team India look to create history, let us have a look at the stars in the most successful Women’s T20 World Cup editions for India.

Women’s T20 World Cup 2020, Australia

Young India batter Shafali Verma has come all guns blazing through out the series. The Haryana-born has taken women’s cricket by storm as she has kept on smashing fearless quickfire runs for India. She has scored 29(15), 39(17), 46(34) and 47(34) en route her 161 in this T20 World Cup edition till now. She is third-placed batter to have scored most runs, only behind England’s Natalie Sciver(202) Heather Knight (193) in this edition. Notably, Sciver and Knight would be deprived of further scoring opportunities as England are out of title race now.

In bowling department, Poonam Yadav has scalped 9 wickets. The Agra-born single-handedly won the match against Australia and that spell of 4 for 19 would be remembered for long. In the other matches too she has delivered every now and then to give India an edge over oppositions. Pacer Shikha Pandey has scalped 7 wickets for India and given India a good option in the opening spells. The nation would be expecting these three gems, along with others to fire together in the finals on Sunday.

Women’s T20 World Cup 2018, West Indies

Harmanpreet Kaur and Smriti Mandhana starred with bat for India in 2018. Captain Harmanpreet scored scored a ton and finished with 183 runs at an average of 45.75, while Mandhana scored 178 at an average of 35.60 to help India reach the semi-finals stage. India won all their matches but failed to overcome the England barrier in the semi-finals. Harmanpreet and Mandhana were the 2nd and 3rd highest run scorers, respectively in the 2018 edition.

Mithali Raj scored 107 runs at an average of 53.50. While Mithali’s run may look less in comparison to Kaur and Mandhana’s but each of her knocks were valuable at the top of the orders.

Radha Yadav, with 8 wickets was the highest wicket-taker for India in that campaign.

Women’s World T20 World Cup 2010, West Indies

India reached the semi-finals stage of the 2010 edition as well. On the slow surface of West Indies, skipper Mithali Raj led from the front and scored 145 runs at an astonishing average of 72.50. She finished as the 2nd highest run-scorer in that edition.

India off-spinner Diana David was the leading wicket-taker of the tournament as she went on to scalp 9 wickets. She bowled with a miserly economy rate of 4.18 in the series

<p>Ramkumar Ramanathan was world nuber 222 before he entered Antalya open. He won 2 pre qualifying and 2 qualifying matches to enter main draw. He reached 2nd round with ease as well. He played top seeded Dominic Thiem in 2nd round. The way Ram dismantled Thiem with his serve was shocking. His serve was working like a dream. With confidence on a high, he found range in his groundstrokes which probably took Thiem by surprise. he won  63 62 to reach QF. In QF he faced veteran Baghadatis. 2006 Australian open finalist also found Ram's serve tough to read. Indian won the first set in tie breaker. He lost second ste 63. Both had chances to close out early in 3rd. Both didnt tale charge. It went to tie breaker again. Cyprus player took lead and had 4 match piints . Ram crawled back to 6-6. But Baghdatis then won it 8-6. SF was so close for Indian. This should give him immense confidence that he cna comoete at this level.In all he beat world number 58 in round 1, world number 8 in round 2 and gave world number 50 a run for his money.He should get well into top 200 after this result.</p>

<p>India played WI in 2nd womens champions trophy. Brilliant spin bowling by Sharma, Raut and Poonam Yadav ensured WI were restricted to 183. That was a haunting score for WI mens team as they lost 1983 finals chasing that. Can their womens team take revenge? India lost Raut early. Sharma fell soon after. India were 33-3. But Mandhana and Mithali Raj steadied India's chase. They had 108 run stand. Mithaly had scored fifties in last 7 innings. She missed scoring 8th by 4 runs. Mandhana though scored century, thereby becoming youngest player to score century in womens world cup.India won by 7 wickets with more than 7 overs to spare.</p>

<p>3rd ODi between IND vs WI was played on Friday. Overnight rain ensured pitch was slightly damp. WI put India in without thinking for more than a second. Pitch was playing tough, It was seaming, also holding a bit. India lost Dhawan and Kohli early on. India were reduced to 34-2. Yuvi joined Rahane and steadied things. Runs were tough to come by. Run rate was hardly 4 runs per over. Yuvi was trapped LBW again by leg spinner. India reduced to 100-3. Rahane found tough to rotate strike. His strike rate never crossed 70. He and Dhoni initial partnership of 40 runs took 15 overs. India were 151-3 by 40th over. India had to make a move . Dhoni started that. He was dropped twice of Bishoo's over. He made WI pay for that. Rahane got out for 72. he took 112 balls to score that. But he ensured wickets didnt fall in a heap at the top. Jadhav joined Dhoni . They both scored 81 runs of 46 balls. Jadhav ended at 400 of 26 balls. DHoni ended at 78 of 79 balls. Dhoni's innings could well be a match winning one. 252 would be tough chase on this pitch. But pitch was easing as well. Umesh Yadav started brilliantly for India as he castled Lewis early on. WI then had a good stand. Hope brothers took WI to 54-1 by 13th over. Post that WI lost way. Pandya and Kuldeep reduced WI to 87-5. Though Muhammed fought hard, India won by 93 runs. Kuldeep shined again with 3 wicket haul. Ashwin also picked 3 fer.</p>

<p>Wimbledon seeding and draw is out. wImbledon is the only slam who alter seeding. They dont only take ranking into account but also considre their recent grass court record. Murray was top seeded. Djokovic was 2nd seeded. Federer was 3rd seeded and Nadal was 4th seeded. Murray starts his campaign against a qualifier. He could face Fognini in 3rd, Kyrgios in 4th round, Tsonga or Wawrinka in Qf and Nadal in SF. Nadal could face Istomin in 2nd round, Khachonov in 3rd round, Mueller in 4th round, Cilic or Nishikori in QF. In other half of the draw,  Djokovic could face Del Potro in 3rd round, Monfils in 4th round , Thiem or Berdych in QF and Federer in SF. Federer starts against Dolgopolov in first round, could face M Zverev in 3rd round, Dimitrov in 4th round, Raonic or A Zverev in QF and Djokovic in SF. Cant wait for Wimbledon to begin. Can Federer win record breaking 8th Wimbledon or Djokovic come back to form by grabbing his 13th slam or would Murray defend his title to grab his 3rd WImbledon or would Nadal spring everybody a surprise !!! It’s not hard to tell that Smriti Mandhana has evolved in her twin roles in the Indian side since her up-and-down World Cup last year. On the field, she has done what most of India’s other batsmen have failed to do since the start of the South Africa series last month: score runs consistently. Off it, she is approaching the T20I vice-captaincy head-on, by taking responsibility.

On Thursday, following India’s fourth straight loss to Australia – a six-wicket thumping in the T20 tri-series opener after being whitewashed 3-0 in the ODIs – Mandhana took sole ownership of a collective failure, instead of sidestepping it. This despite top-scoring for India with an attractive 41-ball 67.

“I am taking that blame on myself, that if I am set and middling the ball well, I should continue, like Mithali [Raj] di does. We have to learn from seniors,” Mandhana reasoned, when asked if the repeated failures of the middle order to build on her starts have been a cause of personal disappointment.

“It’s very easy to blame others and not put it on ourselves. As a player, it is easy to say that they didn’t perform, but the fact is that it is really hard for a new batsman to come and bat, and it is really [important] for a set batsman to play. So it is much easier for me to continue till the 20th over than for the other batsmen to come in and bat.”

It is little surprise that while defending the batting line-up’s inconsistency, Mandhana invoked the example of Raj, who for much of her career has struggled to find support for her prolific returns at the top of the order.

Since the end of the World Cup, Mandhana has scored more ODI runs – 350 – than any other India batsman, and at a better average – 58.33 – as well. In T20Is, she’s been second-best behind Raj in terms of runs and averages, though her strike rate of 148.72 has been far superior to Raj’s 109.94.

After successive low scores in the last match of the South Africa tour and the first ODI against Australia, Mandhana has been in rollicking form, clobbering three consecutive half-centuries. After scoring 67 and 52 in the last two ODIs, she made the fastest T20I fifty by an India women player, on Thursday, even as her team-mates, barring Anuja Patil, failed to build on the platform she laid.

“I would have been pleased if I would have continued for 20 overs, and we would have had a good total and eventually won the match,” Mandhana said. “I have been timing the ball well, and we [as a team] are not learning from our mistakes from what we had [made] in the one-dayers. Like, I am getting out after getting set. So, that is the takeaway from this match.”

The upswing in Mandhana’s form this home season has largely coincided with the absence of Jhulan Goswami from India’s attack. Goswami is now back after recovering from a heel injury, however, and that could just be the spark India need to rebound from their series of losses to Australia.

In the tri-series opener, Goswami picked up three wickets, and the nature of two of them – knocking back the middle stumps of Alyssa Healy and Ashleigh Gardner – particularly pleased Mandhana.

“It was amazing to see some bowleds of some Australian players. [Goswami] coming back to the team has been a boost to all the bowlers, because they have someone like Jhulu di to guide them.

“We are doing the same mistakes in the bowling unit, one is performing and others are not supporting. As a bowling unit, if there is pressure from both ends then the batsmen will go and try something else. Our bowling unit has to step up and create the pressure which we haven’t done in the ODIs.”
