so, the dream i've had for a while now is to write a maritime pirate au !! it would be kind of like a series of interconnected standalones, with each fic focusing on a different ship and its crew! i also wanted to add a bit of horror to it, as i was inspired by a song called "tale of the shadow" (which you should ABSOLUTELY check out by the way) and wanted to make one half of the pairing the 'shadow,' so to speak.

i had the idea to separate the teams by making their boat named by their arena, which led to this lineup!

With the power balance in Congress at stake in this year’s midterm elections, the GOP money machine kicked into high gear. Spending on advertisements and drumming up votes was fueled by hundreds of millions of dollars from the party’s mega-donors and Super Pacs. Many donors’ spending figures marked new records.

Their return on investment, however, is probably not what they had hoped: some donors who spent eight figures notched zero wins in the Senate, while others spent far more money on losing candidates than winners. In the midterms, some of the biggest losers were Republican donors.

Among the clearest of those losers is Mehmet Oz, who self-funded much of his own failed run for office – loaning his Pennsylvania US Senate campaign about $22m, or about 55% of the roughly $40m he raised.

Meanwhile, candidates backed by Peter Thiel, the rightwing tech investor hyped pre-election as a new GOP “kingmaker”, lost in Arizona and Washington, calling into question his judgment and contributions’ value.

Other mega-donors and Pacs came out behind despite spending hundreds of millions of dollars collectively on multiple candidates who lost, according to Open Secrets, a campaign finance watchdog, and federal campaign records. Among those is Mitch McConnell’s Senate Leadership Fund Super Pac, which spent $239m; the billionaire financier Jeff Yass, who spent $47m; the hedge fund manager Ken Griffin, who spent $67m; the packaging giants Elizabeth and Richard Uihlein, who spent $77m; and Blackstone CEO Stephen Schwarzman, who spent $34m.

By contrast, Democratic candidates in high-profile Senate races generally had a larger share of small donations. GOP mega-donor and Super Pac money couldn’t overcome weak candidates that many swing voters viewed as extreme.

The results highlight that “candidate strength matters”, said Gunner Ramer, political director at Longwell Associates, a conservative communication firm. “Voters have real concerns over crime, inflation, gas prices and the economy … but all these really poor candidates – these crazy, extreme Republicans – got beat up hard.”

In Pennsylvania, Oz’s self-funding functioned as a double-edged sword that benefited him in the primaries and made him attractive to GOP base voters “who still think that you can buy a race”, said Sam Chen, a political strategist in Allentown. But once in the general election, Chen said, it meant that Oz received relatively few small donors in part because he was viewed as a self-funder.

Still, he wasn’t alone: McConnell’s Pac put up $47m. That combined with Oz’s personal spending accounted for nearly half of the stunning $140m Oz forces spent in the campaign. Two largely billionaire-funded single-candidate Pacs also went all in on Oz: Honor Pennsylvania spent about $15m, and its largest donor was Citadel CEO Ken Griffin, who gave it at least $8.8m; and American Leadership Action Pac, funded by Wall Street tycoons or mega-donors like Susquehanna International Group CEO Jeff Yass, Blackstone CEO Stephen Schwarzman and Actua CEO Walter Buckley, dropped another $15m.

Though the outside spending in Pennsylvania set a new record, Oz was a “uniquely weak candidate”, Chen noted, and his failure highlights how wealth and Super PAC money “is not the end all be all”.

“Small dollar donations, the grandma who writes you a $5 check, they are locked in and voting for you … and they are probably the type of person who tells their neighborhood, their soccer mom group, their bible study that they gave you contributions,” Chen said. “Those contributions mean a lot more.”

In Arizona, Thiel spent at least $17.5m backing Blake Masters’ failed US Senate bid, while Thiel’s Pac, Saving Arizona, which received significant funding from mega-donor Richard Uihlein, spent at least $21.5m.

Thiel’s potential to become a powerbroker was the subject of intense media attention in part because he funded a breed of rightwing populist GOP candidate that broke with the party establishment. Voters, however, were “completely repelled” by Masters, Ramer said, and though Thiel had success in primary races across the country, his money couldn’t overcome swing voter skepticism in the Arizona general election.

McConnell’s Senate Leadership Fund ended with a mixed record, but spent far more on losing races. Data released just ahead of the election by a marketing industry analyst found McConnell had shelled out $178m for advertising in five states – New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Nevada, Georgia and Ohio.

Campaign finance records show the Senate Leadership Fund spent nearly $140m in four of those five states in which GOP candidates did not win, though Georgia is yet to be decided.

The Club For Growth Super Pac, one of the nation’s most prolific outside spenders, also fared poorly. Its primary funders were Uihlein and Yass, who put at least $46m into the Pac. It backed Masters with over $7m and spent $15m in Nevada attempting to unseat Democratic senator Catherine Cortez Masto. It also spent $12m total on winning campaigns in Ohio and North Carolina.

Meanwhile, the Sentinel Action Fund spent over $10m in Nevada and New Hampshire, and didn’t put any money in winning Senate races. Its primary funder is Tim Mellon, grandson of banking tycoon Andrew Mellon, who spent about $40m during the election cycle.

Focus groups run by Longwell Associates found Pacs’ ads were probably ineffective because voters didn’t like the Trump-backed, extreme GOP candidates that the Pacs supported – such as Adam Laxalt in Nevada, Don Buldoc in New Hampshire or Masters.

“You can hit Catherine Cortez Masto on gas prices and tie it to Joe Biden, but at least a meaningful slice of voters just were not buying it,” Ramer said. “At the end of the day, if they don’t like the Republican candidate, and it becomes a lesser-of-two-evils thing, then it may not move the votes the way that Club for Growth was hoping, and that is a reflection on Adam Laxalt.”

Many of the mega-donors’ spending totals come with a caveat. They may not include all the donors’ contributions, and Pac records may omit spending by some individuals altogether. Pacs are required by law to disclose their donors, but more are shielding their contributors’ identities by exploiting a loophole that allows donors to give to a Pac’s affiliated dark money nonprofit, which does not have to disclose its donors. The nonprofit then gives those donations to the Pac, circumventing disclosure laws.

Pacs only “have the facade of being transparent”, said Sheila Krumholz, executive director of Open Secrets, adding that the loophole adds another layer of uncertainty to the nation’s already murky campaign finance disclosure laws.

Regardless, the money means little to the GOP if the party continues nominating extremist and Trump-backed candidates in swing states, Ramer said. “The gap between what it takes to win in a Republican primary and what it takes to win in November is continuing to grow, and that is a difficulty the party will be dealing with in future elections.”

Whether the funders will have a change of heart is another matter. Republican mega-donors “clearly have money to burn and they may lose, and they may be dissatisfied with their return on investment, but they are also clearly risk takers – and it’s a low risk to them because of how much money they have”, said Krumholz. “It shows the limits of their money.”

They're not a homicidal maniac who is filled with greed; they're probably just trying to get by, and that's their only option. Maybe they had a rough past, or maybe they were blackmailed into it. So remember, not every Pizza Hut employee likes pizza.

violet will eventually become quartermaster but currently its marlon. he may not always be the best at it but he does his best to keep everyone safe

brody is sailingmaster. they may not always have maps but she loves finding new locations

aasim is the boatswain and he takes it very seriously. he bookkeeps everything

ruby is the doctor (feel like that ones a "duh"). she collects medical books where she can, being self taught

omars the cook (another "duh"). hes always experimenting, making something new

mitch is the master gunner and he has a lot of fun doing it

louis kinda fucks around, enjoying not having his parents breathing down his neck 24/7. mostly he plays the piano to keep spirits up, especially at meal times

even tho this takes place with the older kids being in their like mid 20s that still makes aj/tenn/willy a little too young for any serious jobs but they help where they can

Earlier I was thinking of an AU where Mitch is a detective and Stiles is an FBI agent.

Mitch is somewhere around 35, has been a cop for a long time, and is deeply jaded by the business. His daughter is the light of his life, though, and she's a constant reminder not to let his job fully destroy his soul. It's hard sometimes, though.

Daughter is like 8 or so, and is a product of his relationship with Katrina. That relationship has since ended... not quite terribly, it was a mutual divorce, but they definitely like each other now that they're not married anymore. Mitch and Katrina we're together since high school and married right out of college; they tried to commit too much too soon, and within a few years they realized they weren't as suited for each other as they though. Having a new baby plus Mitch's high-risk and high-stress job was hard to deal with, and Mitch isn't good at dealing with stuff at the best of times, so. Divorce. Five years later they're still friends, not falling into the trap of bitter exes.

Katrina has probably moved on but Mitch quickly finds out he's not that good at holding down a relationship, but he doesn't really mind. Marrying Katrina seemed like the logical step; they were high school sweethearts, went to college, obviously the next corse was to get jobs, get a house, and have a baby. That's probably one of the reasons their relationship failed. Nowadays Mitch tends to stick to one night stands and short flings, not all that interested in finding someone to settle down with again.

Mitch has been working an ongoing case for the last 5 years, amongst the others: a human trafficking ring operating out of the city Mitch works in. They're slippery bastards and keep getting away, when suddenly there's a break in the case that leads the FBI to their doorstep.

Stiles is the newest member of the team that's sent to help with the case, all bright eyed and bushy tailed and fresh out of the Academy. He's way too chipper, not beaten down by the job yet, and Mitch can't stand him. He's too hyper and hopeful, and Mitch is enough of a bastard that he takes some sick joy in crushing Stiles' hopes. His unit has been working this case for longer than Stiles has been in the FBI, and will probably be working it long after. Trafficking rings are notoriously hard to break.

Stiles doubles down on his optimism though, out of spite, and that impresses Mitch a bit. After working with Stiles he has to grudgingly admit respect. He's professional and efficient and notices details and patterns that other miss. They might actually make some headway afterall (not that Mitch will admit it.)

Stiles is also great with Mitch's daughter, and she adores him. That goes a long way in thawing Mitch out towards him. And Stiles has a way of getting under his skin; it's not long before they fall into bed together. It's almost inevitable. At least, that's how Mitch justifies it to himself, since he's usually not one for fraternizing with coworkers. But you know how it is; working close quarters, under a lot of stress and pressure, something was bound to break...

There's another break in the case, as well, in the worst possible way. They get too close and one of the traffickers kidnaps Mitch's daughter, and he wishes he was as optimistic as Stiles because all he's left with is the memories of all the case reports and victims associated with this group. She makes for effective bait, getting Mitch out in the open and vulnerable without a moment's hesitation as soon as he recieves the pictures of his terrified daughter, and a location.

It's a trap, of course it is, Mitch knows that. But that's his baby girl, he's not going to sit around waiting to get a strike team together while god knows what happens to her. (He's knows, he's seen the aftermath, and he's not willing to wait.)

Predictably Mitch is outmanned and out gunner, as is given to options: give up all his weapons, or watch them put a bullet in his daughters head. Mitch takes option one, promises his daughter that everything is going to be okay, and does his damndest to stall and figure out a way to get them both out of this.

Lucky for him, Stiles catches up quick, and finds a position that gives him a good vantage point over everything that's happening. Mitch sees him lurking in the shadows, there's some silent communication, and then all hell breaks loose.

Because Mitch has spent the better part of his adulthood exposed to the worst sides of humanity, he's a bit paranoid. He taught Katrina to fight when they were together, and has started doing the same with his daughter. He's also taught her more than your average stranger danger lessons, and when she sees Mitch give her a specific handsignal she drops to the ground; a second later gunfire rings out as Stiles shoots the man that was holding her. But Stiles isn't an assassin, he's a federal agent; so he winged the guy, trained to wound not kill. Mitch goes for his guns and his daughter, his first though to get her out of there, while Stiles lays down cover fire.

Mitch meets Stiles outside and hands his daughter off to him, telling him to get her out of there—something he wouldn't trust anyone else to do, especially now, after coming so close to losing her. But there's no way he's letting the asshole ringleader get away again. Now it's personal. Stiles knows Mitch is about to do something incredibly stupid and extremely illegal.... and decided to step aside and cover for him if he needs to. So Mitch goes back, wounded (he took at least one shot in the back/shoulder while running back out with his daughter) and pissed, to stab a mother Fucker in the eye.

After everything is said and done Mitch gets put on medical leave, miraculously avoids a lawsuit and/or suspension, and everyone gets to go home okay. Oh, and of course Stiles is going to have to have a Serious Talk with him about... everything, really. Mitch being stupid and reckless and almost getting his dumbass killed, and he's so damn lucky Stiles was there to cover him, and if any of them had any sense he would spend the rest of his life at a desk so he didn't do anything else incredibly stupid... and the whole time Mitch is just grinning through Stiles' tirade, until Stiles finally stops in his tracks to ask what the hell is so funny. And Mitch just says,

"You like me."

"No, I don't. I think you're a stupid, reckless, inconsiderate asshole."

"Sure. But you wouldn't be so pissed if you didn't care; you like me."

"I hate you."

And what's worse, is Stiles knows he right. Only people he cares about can get him this furious, dammit. But it's okay, because Mitch likes him too.

“(y/n)!! Are you coming with us?” Tanner asks before popping his head into your office. You nod your head and grab your keys and phone before standing up and walking over to Tanner.

You Tanner, Gunner, and Mitch needed to go shopping for the Rekt shoot coming up later. Connor couldn’t make it so you offered to sub in for the video. It was a challenge video where you would face off against Gunner and Woods while Tanner hosted it.

While Tanner is introing the vlog, you shoot a quick text to your boyfriend Woods to remind him of the shoot. You and Woods had been dating for about six months now but kept it pretty under wraps from everyone. It’s not like you were ashamed of each other but sometimes office romances don’t end well and the two of you wanted to figure out your relationship and feelings without all of your friends watching.

“Okay well (y/n) isn’t even paying attention currently so,” Tanner trails off and you pick your head up at the sound of your name.

“Who are you texting?” Mitch asks zooming in on your face which you were sure was flushed red.

“No one.” You smile and the guys start poking fun at you. After getting to walmart, you pick out the best punishments for the game before hopping back into the car and heading to Goodwill.

“There is no way Gunner should have been Thor.” You add in after setting down a beautifully inscribed ceramic plate.

“Thank you!” Mitch and Tanner say in unison and Gunner pouts.

Suddenly, one of your favorite songs, I Like Me Better by Lauv comes on and you immediately start to sing and dance in the middle of the store while Mitch films a bit of it. When he shuts the camera off, you continue to dance and sing along.

“This song reminds me of that party you threw.” Tanner mentions and you feel your heart start to beat a bit faster.

About a month before you and Woods started to date, you threw a massive party. You invited a ton of old friends, new friends, and work friends alike. At the time you still felt like you were trying to get to know everyone at the office and figured it would be the easiest way to hangout with them in a non intimidating circumstance.

The party was going well and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. You hopped from friend group to friend group, talking to everyone to see how it was going and found everyone loving the party. Just as you’re about to walk over to your school friends, you hear Tanners familiar voice call out.

“(y/n)!” He greets when you walk up to him. “Do you have any more solo cups? There’s none in the kitchen.”

“Uhh let me check downstairs there might be some.”

“Do you need any help?” Woods asks stepping forward.

“Sure!”

Out of most of the people at the studio, you and Woods seemed to get along the best. Your humors clicked instantly when you met each other and you always found yourself wanting to see him smile constantly. You and many others could feel the tension that surrounded you two like a cloud. You both wanted the same thing but weren’t sure if it was good to start an office romance.

The two of you scale your way down into the darkened basement before flipping a light switch and the room comes to life. You both start searching the room for extra cups in silence for a while before you break it.

“Uhm I don’t think we have any.” You say turning towards Woods and smiling sheepishly.

“Well, guess the party's over.” He jokes and you laugh.

“What a shame it was just getting to the good part.” You respond and he smiles at you.

You gesture for him to follow you back upstairs and you make your way back towards the party. But, when you get to the door you find it’s jammed shut. You yank on it a couple of times before Woods steps in front of you and tries but to no avail. You two were stuck.

“Do you have your phone?” Woods asks turning back to you.

“No it’s in the kitchen charging.”

“So is mine.” He sighs. The two of you knock on the door loudly trying to get someone to hear but you knew the music was too loud and you’d just have to wait for someone to notice you two had been gone for awhile.

You both make your way back downstairs and sit on the beat up old couch. You’re both quiet for a while, the only sounds are the loud beat of I Like Me Better by Lauv. But soon Woods breaks the silence this time.

“Well this is not how I expected the night to go but I almost prefer it this way.” He says and you tilt your head in confusion. “Parties are fun but not always my scene.” He says explaining further.

“I haven’t thrown a party in years to be honest. I mostly did it so I could get to know you guys more.”

Woods takes the next moment of silence to move closer to you on the couch. Your knees knock together as he sits back down and you can feel your hands start to shake. You look up at him and his face is mere inches from yours.

“If you wanted to hangout you could have just asked.” He whispers.

“I didn’t-” Before you can finish your sentence Woods’ lips are on yours and you’re melting underneath his touch. His hands cup your face while yours trail to his waist and pull him as close as possible.

Before the kiss goes too far, you hear the basement door slam open making the two of you break apart. When you look over at the stairs, Gunner and Tanner come running down.

“Are you guys okay?” Gunner asks and you and Woods nod in response.

“Y’all have been gone for an hour. We figured we’d come look when we saw the door was busted.”

After that day, yours and Woods real relationship started. It was also after that day that you would keep your relationship on the down low so you can figure out how the two of you work together without any interference.

After y’all leave Goodwill, you head back to the office and set up for the video. You, Gunner, and Woods would be answering trivia questions from Tanner while holding a rope filled with a bucket of water. The whole point was to get the questions right and try not to drop the bucket and smash your items.

The first round goes quickly with Gunner losing first, and then you, making Woods the winner. After setting up the second round, Tanner starts firing off questions again. Woods ends up breaking Gunners item for him so Tanner puts a 25 pound weight in his bucket.

“He’s gonna drop it.” Tanner says while he watches Woods struggle to hold up the rope.

“Nah dude just ask the question bro.” Woods retorts and Tanner shrugs before turning to you.

“What type of rock comes from volcanoes?”

“Igneous.” You answer with ease. The semester of geology you took finally paid off.

Before Tanner can confirm you’re right, your attention is pulled to Woods. His bucket rests on the glass vase and before he can drop it, Tanner lifts up his foot and smashes the item. The next few minutes are a complete blur as you feel a sharp pain cut through your leg.

“(y/n)!!” You hear Woods yell and then you’re surrounded by the guys. Before you can do anything, you’re suddenly lifted up and placed on the table sitting at the edge of the room.

Chuck pushes through the guys and kneels down to survey the large cut on your leg. You can see Tanner, Gunner, and Woods freaking out but you couldn’t focus on anything but the searing pain in your leg.

“Woods.” You whisper and he’s by your side in an instant.

“You might want to hold on to something this is gonna sting.” Chuck says and you instinctively reach for Woods’ hand. You turn your head so your face is pressed into his shoulders as Chuck sprays something on to your leg making the pain twice as bad.

You don’t move from the position until Chuck gives you the okay. You lift your head up and look down to see half of your leg wrapped up in gauze. Chuck tells you that it’ll be okay but you might want to head to urgent care later after work just in case.

You look over at Woods and he immediately rushes forward and kisses your lips. The kiss was urgent and you could feel his care and worry through it. Your lost in his touch even after he pulls away, causing you to forget that Tanner and Gunner were standing right there.

“Wait what?” Tanner asks confused.

“I knew it!” Gunner yells.

“Well there goes that.” Woods says and you chuckle and rest your head on his shoulder. They were gonna find out eventually.

Anyone that isn’t a Hi5 studios fan can ignore this tbh I just want to ramble.

Okay so I love Tanner and Woods and Connor and Paul and Matt and Bryan and Joey and Gunner and Bobby and all of the main boys with my WHOLE HEART, do not get me wrong. In fact, Connor and Paul are probably my two faves? And obviously all these beautiful boys are most popular because they’re on the most channels and in the most videos, they’re talked about and seen the most.

But so many of the people who work behind the scenes & even on the scenes deserve more attention from the fandom?!? Like even Sam doesn’t get as much recognition as she deserves.

I mean, okay, Rob is the cutest thing on earth (and a great big brother, as seen on Cam and Jeff’s channel), CJ & James are both super creative and funny, Nicholle is adorable, as is Lis, Mitch is a snack and a half, Aaron and Dave are both cuties, Pat deserves the world, Jen is great, both Michaels are crazy talented, not to mention everyone I’m forgetting. I just love everyone and everyone!! deserves!! more!! recognition!! 

Hi5 in general is super underrated, but even within the fandom some staff are further underrated. I just love everyone and want them all to be appreciated by other people as much as I appreciate them.
