Here’s a cool evening breeze. If I were in the country, I’d now be taking a black bull home, the sea’s evening glow far away. It’s the time a thousand crows fly home, cawing in the aquamarine sky. Have they picked eggplants in the field? Is it about time for the rice to bloom? Lonesome, lonesome is this city, with nothing but houses, dust, and sky.
Early Autumn by Kaneko Misuzu (Translated by Hiroaki Sato)

Sono di un prezioso rosa,
più piccoli, forse, di semi di papavero.
Quando cadono a terra
i grandi fiori si aprono,
come se esplodessero dei fuochi d'artificio.
Che bello, che bello sarebbe,
se si versassero risate,
come si versano lacrime.

Ascoltate bene, fiorellini azzurro cielo,

Big Catch
At sunrise, glorious sunrise
It’s a big catch!
A big catch of sardines!
On the beach, it’s like a festival
but in the sea, they will hold funerals
for the tens of thousands dead.
(Translated by David Jacobson, Sally Ito, and Tsuboi Michiko.)
