Where I’m currently living, I’m almost perfecting situated between Guelph, Kitchener and Mississauga, but I don’t follow the steelheads at all. Got the chance to go to The Kitchener Auditorium, tour it with some of their front office staff and watch a Rangers/Storm game.
I’m looking forward to Sarnia giving London a challenge this series. The Knights need that to prove themselves.
I’ll be honest, I don’t really follow the WHL much outside of Leafs prospects because I’m not able to go to games given my location. But I’m trying to get into it more because junior hockey is fun. They are good, but make mistakes.
Feeling conflicted for OHL western conference finals... LDN vs SAR
I'm devastated bc Sarnia beat Guelph, but they also have Sasha Pastujov and Ty Voit. I'm cheering for the players and not the team, I guess lol.
I dislike London a great deal for a variety of reasons (although I take a great deal of joy seeing their coach Dale Hunter lose his mind).
I have no idea what's going on in the eastern conference.
I personally am a Sarnia hater. It seemed like every game I’ve gone to for the past little while has been against Sarnia and I’m just so exhausted of watching them play. Pastujov and Voit are the only players I like on Sarnia rn.
London isn’t bad, I’m a Brochu fan tbh. But I’m not a fan of the team as a whole (even though I follow the team on instagram 😂)
The east is so weird, I don’t really play attention to the other teams in the OHL after Guelph, Kitchener, London because those are the teams that are closest to me. So I also have no idea what’s happening there.
Been keeping track of the OHL draft tonight, so we’ll see how that goes 😂

Mild gripe of course but I feel like many fic writers are unaware that major junior teams will only play teams from other leagues during the Mem Cup finals. Your Mississauga Steelhead or Kingston Frontenac is not going to see the Blazers on a regular basis. Do you know how far Lake Ontario is from Kamloops

Have you ever read anything about why Jack decided not to go to college? I know he was projected to go first for a while and his goal was to make the team right away, but Quinn and Luke committed to Michigan at like 14. So when jack was 14 too it was kind of a long ways off from him knowing he’d go first overall. I wonder what his parents thought since their dad has said multiple times that their kids all playing college hockey was their dream
this is a kind of long answer so buckle up. first of all, as kids, jack was very different from luke and quinn. obviously all 3 are elite players now, but both jim and ellen have said that jack’s trajectory differed from a young age. so while quinn went 8th round in the ohl draft, the plan for him was always college and it wasnt until he was at the program that he started to be seen as a top player. but jack as a player was so elite so young that people were talking about him going first overall before he was in high school. he applied for exceptional status for the ohl so he could play as an underager but was denied (bc he was so physically immature and would have been playing against men) but had he played in the ohl, he would have not been eligible for the ncaa. so for a while that was the reason. and then he went to the program and after his first year a lot of michigan fans had hoped that he would graduate HS early to go play with quinn at umich, but he said that he wanted to stay where he was for his development. and at this point he's been the presumptive first overall pick for years, it wasn't until the year of the draft that kakko was seen as a serious challenger. most first overalls go into the nhl their draft year, with some exceptions like owen power obviously, but for the most part, 1st overalls who play in college either have earlier birthdays than jack (so would age out of the ntdp etc before their draft year like auston matthews) or graduate early on purpose to play in college. quinn's birthday actually falls in the weird category of spending 2 years at the ntdp and still needing to graduate early to go straight to college. to sum things up, college hockey was yes the dream for quinn and luke, but jack was always different and their parents have said as much. they wont explicitly say it, but they knew jack was going into the nhl long before 14. and i don't know how close it actually got to happening, but in summer 2018 jack was (allegedly) stopped by the admissions department from going to umich where sometimes they will fudge stuff for elite athletes. but i kind of doubt he would have gone anyway, because he loved the program and it was hockeyhockeyhockey 24/7 in a way college just isn't, and he lived close enough that he saw quinn all the time.
from earlier that year,
And Quinn said he'd be happy if Jack played for the Wolverines next season. “Playing with my brother would be a dream come true,” Quinn said. “He’s gotta make his own decision.”
and
Jack and the Hughes family has options. Along with U-M, the Mississauga Steelheads drafted him with the eighth overall pick in the 2017 Ontario Hockey League Priority Selection. Or he could stay at NTDP for the second year. “It could be a perfect scenario,” Jim said of Jack going to U-M. “But they’re not there yet. The beauty is Jack is in a really great spot right now. He values the development he’s getting with Seth and Wrobo.” Quinn said he and his brother haven’t talked about next year's possibilities yet. They’re focused on what they still can accomplish this season, on their respective teams.
and then here's an article on him choosing to stay at the ntdp that year. so the reasons he didnt commit young were mostly that he didnt know if he even could go to college, and then he almost did go as a 17 year old but ultimately did not. every school in the country would have tripped over themselves to try to nab him, but it was assumed by umich and everyone else that if he went to college, it would be there. but pretty much everyone at the time expected him to make the jump to the nhl immediately in 2019, including himself, he was very vocal about wanting to do so.
#this is long and rambly i hope it makes enough sense and answers your question#i should have a tag for these things#answered

Harley-Foerster primer
Making my case for why you should ship these two rookies
Tyson Foerster
He’s a rookie on the Flyers with really excellent advanced stats, whatever that means. He had a slow start to his season, but he stayed positive, and he recently hit his stride. Lately he’s been scoring a ton of goals:
youtube
All of his cellies are just him flinging his arms up in the air in pure joy. He is almost always smiling.
He cares about his teammates and doesn't like beating them even in pointless competitions.
In this clip, Tyson wins a meaningless accuracy shooting competition against Cam York and a few other Flyers. When asked how it feels, Tyson answers "not good, he's my teammate." We love a professional athlete who just wants to have fun with the boys.
When he isn't smiling, he's extremely expressive:
He has a well-documented history of frolicking
Also one time he dressed up as a playboy bunny. How that alone has not yet launched 1000 fics, I do not know.
So: Tyson Foerster is a sweet ball of sunshine and an A+ goal scorer, secure in himself and his masculinity.
Thomas Harley
From Syracuse NY, he’s the star (heh) rookie defenseman of the Dallas Stars.
We love him because he's a total babe and also very good at hockey.
He was highlighted on the NHL Network for leap year as a player who's taken a bit leap forward.
drysdalc on Twitter created a dizzying fan edit of him scoring goals and running his hands through his hair, if you'd like further justification.
Personality-wise, The Athletic said the following:
"Harley has always been a soft-spoken individual, especially in front of the microphone. There’s a looser version of him, one who picks playful fights with Wyatt Johnston in practices and during warmups, as he did on Saturday. But the most impressive thing about Harley has always been his maturity."
Sometimes he looks a bit deer-in-the-headlights during interviews. In my opinion this only adds to his charm.
Foerster/Harley
I hope I've convinced you that they're both at the very least plausibly nice boys. But why the two of them together?
I invite you to cast your thoughts back to September 27th, 2019. Harley is a recent draftee of the Dallas Stars. He played a few pre-season games, then was sent back to the Mississauga Steelheads of the OHL.
He gets off the plane and immediately plays a game against the Oshawa Generals, which he loses 5-6. The very next day, he plays another game, this time against the Barrie Colts. Thomas's team loses again, 7-3.
That season, Tyson Foerster was playing on the Colts. In that 7-3 game, Tyson recorded 6 points, including 3 goals.
"Foerster put himself squarely on the draft map on a late September day against the Mississauga Steelheads. He recorded six points including a hat trick. Then he went on a crazy point streak recording points in 13 straight games which including six consecutive multi-point efforts." - The Athletic
See? Huge deal for Foerster, and he got there by absolutely grinding Thomas's team into the dirt.
Thomas responded aggressively the next time their teams played each other, on 12/20/2019. In that game, Harley recorded two points and two assists, and the Steelheads beat the Colts 8-2. They played a few more times, including an overtime win for the Colts and an 8-1 Steelheads win.
After that season, Harley and Foerster didn't face each other again, as they both spent time in the minors. But this year, they're full time with their respective clubs. The Flyers and Stars have played two games this year.
The first, on October 21st, 2023, went to overtime. The Stars won 4-5. Tyson got a couple of shots on goal but neither player was particularly decisive.
The teams faced each other again on January 18th, 2024, AKA Tyson's 22nd birthday. This time, to the shock of basically everyone, the Flyers beat the absolute shit out of the Stars—but it took them a little while to get there.
As the second period was winding down, the Flyers were only up by 1. The shots differential was dramatically worse, at one point 28–3 in favor of the Flyers.
In the final minute of the 2nd period, Thomas high-sticked Tyson in the face. Miraculously, the Flyers scored on the associated power play, and it only got worse from there. The final tally was 1-5 in favor of the Flyers. Arguably, the Harley/Foerster penalty was the beginning of the end.
To summarize:
9/27/19: Thomas Harley plays 5 pre-season games with the stars and gets sent down back to Mississauga 9/28/19: Foerster’s Colts win 7-3 against Harley’s Mississauga, Tyson Foerster gets 6 points including a hat trick 12/20/19: The Colts play Sauga again, Mississauga wins 8-2 and Thomas gets a hat trick 2023–2024: Thomas Harley and Tyson Foerster are finally up with their respective teams for the season. 10/21/2023: Harley and Foerster play their first game against each other in the NHL. Neither of them does anything particularly of note. 1/18/2024: Harley and Foerster play their second game against each other in the NHL. Thomas highsticks Tyson at the end of the 2nd, arguably costing the Stars the game. Oh, and it’s Tyson’s 22nd birthday.
In conclusion, you should ship them because:
sunshine-quiet is a fun pairing
their games against each other, while few, have a lot of drama
they're both very cute
edit 4/22/24: additional information has surfaced for me personally, which is that Tyson's roommate Joel Farabee is a longtime friend of Thomas Harley. This is very important and relevant information that everyone should know.

is peanut going to play in the nhl?
y'all are making p grow up too fast 😭😭
peanut's considered a high level hockey player from an early age. she's always been amazing for her age, but when she moves to toronto, plays in the gthl and later in the ohl (gets exceptional status to play as a 15 y/o and is drafted by the mississauga steelheads, so she's close enough to live in toronto w/ everyone), she suddenly gets a lot of media attention. the biggest question is if she's going to play in the nhl or pwhl.
like, she has a legitimate chance to be drafted as a high pick in the nhl bcz she has such a strong hockey resume (played in peewee growing up, gthl in toronto marlboros - later captain, and ohl for mississauga steelheads - captain at the age of 17, played u16s for us - captain, played u18s for us - captain, plays in the wjs for us - got the 'a' at age 17), and she's got connections. she's a hughes-matthews, and her step-dad is barzy, so the media's going crazy, bcz she has the chance to be the first female drafted by the nhl, and she might even go first overall.
but p wants to go to college, she doesn't want to quit lacrosse just yet, so she doesn't know what to do. she listens to everyone's advice, and chooses not to go for the draft at 18 (the first eligible year). she goes to northeastern for two years, finally making the decision to enter the... pwhl draft the year she turns 20 (final year of her eligibility).
she's drafted first overall by pwhl toronto, and finishes her northeastern schooling online. her rookie lap is insane, the entire hughes-matthews-barzal family exploding into cheers.
her first game is incredible, she scored 4 goals and the game winner in ot. after that, it's history

a running list of very niche nhl facts that break my brain a bit:
- tim stutzle, matthew knies, seth jarvis, jamie drysdale, and matt rempe were all born in the same year (2002)
- matthew knies and mason mctavish have more olympic experience than auston matthews and connor mcdavid
- vegas has played in just as many outdoor games as toronto since the 2017/18 season
- travis dermott was drafted one pick ahead of sebastian aho in the 2015 draft
- trevor zegras was drafted by the mississauga steelheads (ohl)
- the leafs have won the same number of games outside of north america as they have playoff rounds in the past 20 years (2)
- the last canadian team to win the cup was the canadiens in the 1992/93 season, and only 15 different teams have won it in the 30 years since
- auston matthews is only 12 goals back from current 3rd place holder dave keon in all time leaf goals despite playing 518 fewer games
- john tavares has played more games for the leafs than zach hyman did
#dont even know how to tag this#i wish i could internalize school work the way i do info about hockey#will add as i continue to do meaningless research

shane wright trade scenarios
hi everyone!!! i am wanting to cover this more potentially on the pod next week, but i did want to make a post in advance breaking some stuff down.
obviously, we all know that the kraken do not intend to send shane wright down at the moment, but i think the likelihood of him being sent down after wjc is probable. the ohl trade deadline is in mid-january and with all the movement that's happened recently, the chances of him being in the ohl again is VERY HIGH. likely though, it won't be with kingston. the fronts are likely going to tank the rest of this year if they receive the memorial cup bid to have a good team next year. with the current improvements within their conference, i say that's the most likely outcome.
so...who in the ohl is MOST likely to get shane wright?
let's start in the eastern conference, based on standings
ottawa 67s
unlikely. they are looking for continual, sustained success after last year's rebuilding year. it's also not a place he'd likely WANT to go.
2. north bay battallion
nope. they just acquired josh bloom from the saginaw spirit and are going all in this year, but they've found their guy
3. mississauga steelheads
i'd honestly love to see it. it makes sense strategically. they don't have a 100% number one centre, a game breaking star. but they're deep enough to support shane, and this is really their last year to do it all before they fall back to mediocrity. it's also close to home, so that would be a good confidence booster for shane. i think it would cost mississauga the moon and more to get him, but i think they have what it takes to get it done.
4. peterborough petes
it'd be fun to see him with otter again, but it's unlikely. while the petes don't have a true #1 centre, they do have an overager in that spot already. also petes are just rising from their rebuilding years, they won't want to spend the draft capital
5. kingston frontenacs
no he's not staying.
6. barrie colts
no, they're middling and will sell off to rebuild at the deadline.
7. hamilton bulldogs
no, they're rebuilding, just after their mem cup year
8. sudbury wolves
thought they'd be better and contending this year, but likely not until next year so...no
9. oshawa generals
no, they're also mid rebuild
10. niagara icedogs
haha nice joke
and now the west!!!
windsor spitfires
absolutely yes. it'd be out of conference, which is likely what the fronts want AND the spitfires have enough depth to make it through multiple playoff rounds. they've also lost wyatt johnston, meaning a trade for a high-end top centreman is probably in the cards for their trade deadline
2. saginaw spirit
they're doing well, but with the bloom trade, it's clear they view this year as not their year. likely, they're wanting to extend their window to the end of michael misa's tenure there, a year longer than the typical mem cup window. if shane was more than a rental? yes. but he's not
3. owen sound attack
absolutely. this is the first time the attack have been relevant in a LONG time. they must know that this year is their year to go for it, no matter what. 100% they are the most likely team that is willing to lay it all down to get wright. it's just that he would never accept a trade there
4. flint firebirds
just sold off their captain, so they likely know that they're middling and will not be contending this year.
5. sarnia sting
just got sasha pastujov but they're also middling due to their goaltending. it could happen, but i highly doubt it. they aren't true contenders this year anyways
6. london knights
one of their first rebuild years in a while, so yeah, no.
7. erie otters
on the upswing, but their true contending years will be when their young stars reach their peak
8. soo greyhounds
rebuilding, NEXT
9. kitchener rangers
huge sellers at the deadline, 100% not going to try to contend this year with their situation
10. guelph storm
underrated crasher from this year. they missed their window HARD.
anyways hopefully that was helpful!!!! if anyone has anymore questions pls send them to me, but be prepared for askbox purgatory. even if i'm trying my best to answer!

The Steelheads franchise is expected to bolt Mississauga’s Paramount Fine Foods Centre for Brampton, TSN hockey insider Darren Dreger said on the social-media site X, citing sources.
The team confirmed the report in a message to season ticket holders, the news website Insauga.com reported, saying the move should be made in time for the start of the 2024-25 OHL season. The team reportedly plans to move into the nearby CAA Centre, which housed the Brampton Battalion until 2013 before the franchise marched to North Bay.
When the Steelheads’ move becomes official, it would end a 26-year tradition of OHL hockey in Mississauga, which began hosting the IceDogs in 1998 before the franchise moved to St. Catharines in 2007. The Toronto St. Michael’s Majors immediately replaced the IceDogs in 2007-08 before being sold in 2012 and renamed as the Steelheads, who made the OHL final in 2017.
Brampton also entered the league in 1998, making a trip to the OHL final in 2009 before heading to North Bay amid declining attendance. The Steelheads have also struggled to draw fans, averaging a league-low 2,256 spectators per game this season, according to HockeyDB.com.

Wheeling Nailers Re-Signs Forward Boomhower to ECHL Contract
The Wheeling Nailers, proud ECHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins, have announced their 13th player signing of the 2023 offseason. Wheeling has re-signed forward Shaw Boomhower to an ECHL contract. Boomhower, 24, will play for the Nailers for the second time in his career, as he was a member of the 2021-22 team that helped Wheeling win its first playoff series since 2016. Shaw brought lots of physicality to the lineup that season, as he led the team with 127 penalty minutes in 31 games. He also contributed to the offense with five goals, eight assists, and 13 points, which included a career-best four-point game in a 6-2 triumph over Kalamazoo on January 21st. This will be the forward's fifth season as a pro, as he spent two years in Cincinnati and also saw AHL action with the Rochester Americans. Last season, Boomhower was limited to four games with Kalamazoo due to injury. The Nailers acquired Shaw's rights from the Kansas City Mavericks prior to the ECHL Trade Deadline. "We are excited to have Shaw back, as he saw firsthand what it took to win two seasons ago," said Nailers Head Coach Derek Army. "Last season, we missed his physical element. When Shaw is on, there aren't many players like him in this league, and we saw how great he was at complementing our top offensive players." Prior to turning pro, the Belleville, Ontario native played two seasons of junior hockey in the Ontario Hockey League for the Mississauga Steelheads and Ottawa 67's. Boomhower reached the postseason in both campaigns, which included a run to the J. Ross Robertson Cup Final in his rookie year of 2016-17 with Mississauga. Shaw notched a goal and an assist in that championship series against Erie. Overall, Boomhower amassed 16 goals, 17 assists, 33 points, and 159 penalty minutes in 99 OHL contests. Shaw Boomhower and the Wheeling Nailers will open the 2023-24 season on the road against the Cincinnati Cyclones on Saturday, October 21st. The team's home opener is Saturday, November 4th against the Reading Royals at 7:10. Season memberships and other terrific ticket plans for the 2023-24 season are available now by calling (304) 234-GOAL. The Wheeling Nailers, considered one of the top things to do in Wheeling, West Virginia, provide affordable family entertainment for fans throughout the Ohio Valley. Read the full article
