Unconventional First Date: A Stargazing Adventure
When it comes to first dates, the pressure to impress can be overwhelming. Traditional dinner-and-movie outings, while safe choices, often lack the spark to make your date unforgettable. If you're looking to break the mold and create a memorable experience, consider an unconventional first date idea: a stargazing adventure. This unique date offers romance, conversation, and a touch of magic, making it a perfect choice for those seeking something extraordinary. Setting the Stage: Preparing for Your Stargazing Date A successful stargazing date starts with careful planning. The first step is choosing the right location. Look for areas away from city lights where the night sky can be seen in its full glory. National parks, open fields, and secluded beaches are ideal spots. Websites and apps like Dark Sky Finder can help you locate the best stargazing sites near you. Next, check the weather forecast. Clear skies are essential for a successful stargazing experience. Plan your date on a night when the weather is favorable, and the moon phase is either new or crescent to ensure the stars are visible. The Essentials: What to Bring To make your stargazing date comfortable and enjoyable, pack a few essentials: - Blankets and Pillows: Create a cozy spot to sit or lie down while you gaze at the stars. Bring extra blankets to stay warm as the night gets cooler. - Snacks and Drinks: Pack a picnic basket with your favorite snacks and beverages. Finger foods like cheese, crackers, fruit, and chocolate are perfect for a romantic setting. - Star Map or App: A star map or a stargazing app like Star Walk or SkyView can enhance the experience by helping you identify constellations and celestial events. - Telescope or Binoculars: If you have access to a telescope or binoculars, bring them along to get a closer look at the stars and planets. - Portable Speaker: Create a romantic atmosphere with a playlist of soft, ambient music. Setting the Mood: Creating a Magical Experience Arrive at your chosen location just before sunset to set up your spot and enjoy the transition from day to night. As the sky darkens, the stars will begin to emerge, creating a breathtaking backdrop for your date. Use this time to relax, enjoy your snacks, and engage in light conversation. Conversation Starters: Connecting Under the Stars Stargazing naturally encourages deep and meaningful conversations. Use the celestial scenery as a springboard for intriguing topics: - Astronomy and Space Exploration: Share interesting facts about the stars, planets, and constellations. Discuss recent space missions or theories about the universe. - Dreams and Aspirations: The vastness of the night sky can inspire conversations about personal dreams, goals, and aspirations. - Favorite Books and Movies: Talk about your favorite books and movies related to space and adventure. This can lead to discovering shared interests. - Life Philosophies: The quiet and contemplative setting is perfect for discussing life philosophies and what matters most to you. Making Memories: Capturing the Moment Capture the magic of your stargazing date with a few photos, but don’t let technology dominate the evening. Focus on the experience and the connection you’re building with your date. If the moment feels right, a gentle touch or a shared blanket can add to the romance of the evening. Wrapping Up: Ending on a High Note As the night draws to a close, reflect on the evening and express your gratitude for the shared experience. A thoughtful compliment or a genuine expression of enjoyment can leave a lasting impression. Suggest a second date that builds on the connection you’ve established, such as a visit to a planetarium or a hike under the stars. Conclusion: A Date to Remember A stargazing adventure is a unique and enchanting first date idea that offers a blend of romance, discovery, and connection. By carefully planning and creating a comfortable and engaging atmosphere, you can turn an ordinary night into a memorable experience. Embrace the beauty of the night sky and let the stars guide you to a deeper connection with your date. Read the full article

The OnePlus Pad Go Finally Arrives in Europe
A while back, OnePlus announced the launch of the OnePlus Pad Go, a more affordable variant of its flagship Android tablet. With that being said, the tablet was only made available via a limited release in select regions, although that all changes today - the company finally announced the availability of the OnePlus Pad Go for European regions, alongside the launch of the new OnePlus Watch 2 Nordic Blue edition. Speaking about the tablet's launch, OnePlus Europe CEO Bingo Liu states: As a premium Android brand, our latest product strategy is centred around building a powerful and connected ecosystem of high-quality OnePlus devices across smartphones, tablets, wearables and audio... Europe represents a key region for us, and we are committed to providing our community here with a holistic fast & smooth product experience... The expansion of our tablet offering with the OnePlus Pad Go, further enhances our mission of making great technology accessible to all.” In terms of design, the OnePlus Pad Go doesn't stray too much from the stylings of its more expensive sibling. It retains a rounded rectangle look with considerably-curved corners, as well as the camera placement on the rear panel, a stark contrast to the myriad of Android tablets on the market which tend to place the rear cameras on the upper left corner. For audio, the tablet uses a quad-speaker setup with Dolby Atmos support. For performance, OnePlus has equipped the tablet with a MediaTek Helio G99 chip, aided by 8GB of RAM and up to 256GB of expandable storage, meaning you'll get to use your micro SD cards on the device. Powering the tablet is an 8,000 mAh battery, a common sight on most Android tablets these days - it also features support for 33W fast-charging using OnePlus' Super VOOC charging tech. As for display hardware, the OnePlus Pad Go features a large 11-inch IPS LCD screen with a 1720 x 2408 pixel resolution. It's not an OLED panel, but given the lower price tag this is an understandable choice. The large display should be enough for most users who intend to use the tablet for media consumption, social media, as well as web browsing. The display also features a 90Hz refresh rate, a much-welcome feature especially for the price. There's also a pair of 8MP cameras on the back and front - no ultra-wide or telephoto sensors on here, although those are usually reserved for smartphones and ultra high-end tablets. For buyers who are interested in OnePlus' budget tablet, you can grab the Pad Go during the Early Bird period (April 17th-22nd) and pay a €1 deposit to get €30 off your purchase. Then on April 23rd, the Pad Go goes on general sale with a €30 discount, and you can combine these offers for a total saving of €60. Read the full article

[ad_1] Symbol Credit score: Devindra Hardawar/Engadget All over the outlet chase in Child Motive force, as an example, I may listen automobiles whizzing via my ears, the roar of tough engines and Jon Spencer Blues Explosion's "Bellbottoms" filling my circle of relatives room. That very same scene at the authentic Beam sounded nice, however there used to be no sense of enveloping encompass sound. The second one-generation type simply appeared like a richer revel in, as though cotton balls have been got rid of from my ears. The similar used to be true whilst revisiting 2015's (severely underrated) The Guy from U.N.C.L.E., or the epic car-turned-motorcycle chase in MIssion Not possible: Rogue Country. The brand new Beam is a tiny speaker intended to make a meal of bombastic motion sequences, and it does so with out distorting or breaking a sweat. Sonos additionally desirous about making conversation clearer too, one thing I favored when conversations have been going down amid the ones large set items. Most commonly, even though, I used to be inspired via what Sonos used to be in a position to do with one of these small tool. You'll be able to to find soundbars and wi-fi encompass sound programs for not up to $450, and plenty of will ship larger sound. However Sonos gives issues different programs do not. For one, it is simple to arrange: You simply plug it into the fitting ports and step in the course of the procedure on Sonos's app. With competing merchandise, you might also have to seek out spots to carry rear audio system, which nonetheless wish to plug into energy. As nice as the brand new Beam sounds, even though, it is no fit for the Atmos features of the Arc. However for part the fee, I would not be expecting it to. Devindra Hardawar/Engadget In the case of synchronized audio all through your house, Sonos continues to be the hooked up speaker corporate to overcome. There is not any more straightforward strategy to program track for area events (and outside shindigs with the moveable Roam and Transfer audio system). The second one-gen Beam is a forged addition to the circle of relatives relating to track, even though it is much less of an instantaneous improve in comparison to motion pictures. It's going to give a boost to Dolby Atmos on Amazon Track later this yr, however that carrier lately does not have an enormous selection of Atmos tracks. Sonos is not pronouncing when it's going to give a boost to Atmos on Apple Track, however there is technically not anything preventing that from going down down the road. The brand new Beam sounded nice whilst taking part in again a few of my favourite albums, like Bjork's Homogenic and Janelle Monae's The Electrical Woman, with a good sense of presence and a few thumping low-end. But it surely did not sound dramatically other love it did with motion motion pictures. Amazon Track's Extremely HD mixture of Marvin Gayes' "What is Going On" sounded very crisp and transparent, however I will be extra all for listening to what the Atmos model of that tune appears like sooner or later. On my Echo Studio, that Atmos combine virtually appears like Gaye is appearing a reside live performance proper in entrance of you. And talking of Echo units, the Beam’s Alexa integration nonetheless works smartly. Its far-field microphones can listen me from the opposite facet of my massive circle of relatives room, and it helps the entire similar instructions as Amazon’s personal units. It might simply exchange an Echo in the similar room, however you'll be able to additionally simply mute the microphone and stay your Amazon account unlinked if you happen to don’t wish to have it listening in. The Sonos Beam excels at being a easy and compact soundbar that'll provide you with a big soundstage for motion pictures.
However I might counsel sitting again and eager about what is actually vital to you. Do you care extra about having a blank TV setup with out many wires? Or do you wish to have a soundbar device with extra sensible encompass sound? (Exact rears, a subwoofer and upward-firing Atmos audio system.) If that is so, you've got additionally were given nice choices like Vizio's M-series 5.1.2 for round $500. Devindra Hardawar/Engadget You have to sooner or later construct a Sonos encompass sound device across the Beam via including two One audio system as rears, in addition to the corporate's wi-fi subwoofer. However the ones two items of hardware on my own would run you some other $1,150 (or it is advisable purchase all of them bundled in combination for $1,499). In case you are going that course, chances are you'll as smartly leap instantly to the $899 Arc to have the most productive imaginable Sonos device. The second one-generation Sonos Beam isn’t an enormous bounce forward of the unique, but it surely’s nonetheless a greater soundbar general because of the addition of Atmos. In the event you already personal a Beam, you don’t wish to run out and seize one. But it surely’s a forged sub-$500 soundbar if you wish to take your film observing up a notch. Observe: Sonos is a former sponsor of my film podcast, The Filmcast, however that hasn't stopped me from being essential of the corporate. All merchandise beneficial via Engadget are decided on via our editorial crew, unbiased of our mother or father corporate. A few of our tales come with associate hyperlinks. If you are going to buy one thing via this kind of hyperlinks, we might earn an associate fee. [ad_2]

I saw Endgame on the Sunday after it was released in theaters during a work-related conference in Chicago. I bought advance tickets for a screening at the ShowPlace ICON at Roosevelt. The theater featured “industry leading customer service”, reserved stadium seating, the ICON-X enhanced xperience with Dolby Atmos, upwards of 60 individually powered QSC speakers and 40 QSC digital amplifiers, and a fancy lounge with fancy cocktails. The screens were nearly 1500 square feet.
My hotel (and the conference) were in Hyde Park, a gorgeous diverse neighborhood in the South Side of Chicago. As I explored the neighborhood, I stumbled by the Harper Theater, a local spot that had screened films for the local community since 1913 (with a break in the early aughts). It did not have stadium seating or an ICON-X enhanced xperience. I don’t know how large the screen was, but it was not nearly 1,500 square feet. The theater was screening Endgame but there were no lines or fuss, just some posters promoting the movie and people casually milling about the theater. There was something about the casual atmosphere and the friendly environment that felt appealing. I decided to return my ticket at the ShowPlace and buy one at Harper.
The theater didn’t serve much food but was near some great places that did (props to Ja’Grill Hyde Park). It also featured a ticket taker/usher/bartender who made a mean (and inexpensive!) Jack and Coke. The projection was perfectly fine and the sound was clear. The theater was full, but I got there a little early to get a good seat. The audience was perfect, engaged but not loud enough to be a distraction. It was a terrific viewing experience. As the credits rolled at the end of the film, surrounded by satisfied families and fans, I thought that Marvel had finally produced a legitimately great film that captured the experience of reading an epic superhero comic.
I had breakfast with a colleague at the conference the following morning. We chatted about work, family, Game of Thrones and Endgame while sipping coffee and absentmindedly picking at bagels. We both grew up on comics and were surprised at how excited we always were for the latest Marvel film, even when we had mixed feelings about the actual product. They chuckled as they told me that they took Friday off work to watch the film after closing out a particularly challenging case. I told them that I saw the film immediately after a networking dinner at the conference to wind down. They shared their mixed feelings about the film – they enjoyed moments and the spectacle, but the film was far too long and didn’t make much sense. I nodded thoughtfully. I shared my thoughts about the film. They asked me whether I liked the film. In that moment, I realized that I didn’t know.
Endgame is the second part of a story about the epic battle between almost every hero introduced in Marvel Studios’ Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) vast narrative (including the Avengers) and Thanos, a hypercompetent nearly omnipotent super villain with plans to reduce the population of the universe by half that began in the Infinity War. The film is partially inspired by Jim Starlin, George Perez and Ron Lim’s classic Infinity Gauntlet miniseries from the early ‘90’s. It features the surprising team ups, epic battles and astronomical stakes that one might find in a classic superhero event crossover. For those of us who read superhero comics when we were children (and many who continue to read the books), this pair of movies combine to form a single expensive, perfectly designed nostalgia machine.
The film blends melodrama, situational comedy, slapstick, space opera and action to create an entertaining viewing experience, but it also values emotional resonance and fan satisfaction over storytelling logic and meaningful stakes/consequences for character actions. The film alternates between dialogue and banter heavy scenes and pedestrian action scenes with state of the art visual effects in a way that feels thrilling in the theater but quickly fades from memory upon exit. Endgame tantalizes the audience with a world of imaginative possibility that feels absent of civilians or characters who are not superheroes (by this point in the narrative, the Avengers are mostly protecting and avenging one another).
Endgame exemplifies the strengths and shortcomings of the MCU project as a whole. It is a film that captures the sense of discovery and excitement that readers like me felt when reading superhero comics as children, appeals to a global audience of people who are only familiar with the Marvel characters as brands and feels somewhat weightless and insubstantial.
I saw the first MCU movies (the first ‘phase’) in the theater. The sense of awe I felt watching Iron Man on the big screen diminished with each film that followed. After Joss Whedon’s Avengers, I mostly saw MCU films on a streaming platform on nights when my wife went to sleep early. They were more densely plotted and serialized than procedural shows like Law & Order and not as intellectually taxing or emotionally draining as shows like the Americans. They scratched an itch. The best of these Marvel films were thoughtful and entertaining, but other than a few standouts – Captain America: Winter Soldier, Black Panther and Thor: Ragnarok – the scenes and images faded shortly after the credits rolled.
I never got completely used to this experience. I’ve loved superhero comics and film for most of my life, and one of the things they have in common are the images that lingered in my imagination.
The woman emerging from the sea as a god surrounded by flame. The man who realizes that he’s going to leave his wife and child and stay with a near stranger in France. The woman who embraces her rage and allows her exterior to reflect her interior. The door closing on a woman who allows herself to realize what she suspected all along – that she lost her husband to his family and their business a long time ago. The makeshift family who momentarily put aside their troubles to enjoy each others’ company, if only for a moment. A sequence that asks us to imagine a near future America that feels as uncertain and unsafe as the unstable countries we all read about in the newspaper (never mind that we were always more uncertain and unsafe than we thought and some of those places may have been more stable).
youtube
I will never completely understand how the marriage of superhero stories and film in the Marvel Studios films has produced so much entertaining work with so few memorable images and moments.
The excitement that I felt in Chicago’s Harper Theater surrounded by enthused families and dedicated Marvel fans faded into respect for the craft involved in creating the film as I walked back to my hotel room. It took me a few days to notice that Endgame’s plot (and the film’s overall role in the MCU vast narrative) left more of an impression than any image or visual sequence in the film. There were flashes – the exhaustion on Robert Downey Jr.’s face, the calm expression of Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk – but very little that lingered in the imagination.
As I sat through workshops and chatted with colleagues from peer institutions over the following days, I found myself returning to the storytelling choices of the filmmakers and Endgame‘s place within the larger MCU vast narrative. There were elements and ideas that were still fascinating, but others which had a distancing effect, a reminder that I was watching a commercial product.
2. Endgame: The Pedestrian Puzzlebox
Endgame is the last chapter of the most successful film franchise of the last decade, a visual effects extravaganza designed for theaters with top of the line sound and projection systems. It’s also one of the few action franchises that feel more driven by dialogue than compelling action scenes. The visual effects are state of the art but the action scenes are relatively pedestrian, lacking the brutal beauty or poetry that can be found in the John Wick or Raid franchises.
youtube
youtube
I didn’t have the sense of awe or magic that I get from watching films from the Star Wars franchise (which is even effective on a smaller screen). One of the things that separate great action films like the Police Story or Mission Impossible franchises from lesser films is the use of action sequences as a tool to add layers of meaning to the overall story. The fights aren’t just a way to get from point A to point B or an opportunity to thrill the audience, they help us understand the characters involved and gain insight into their respective journeys. We see combatants display their strengths and vulnerabilities and learn from mistakes. The scenes tell a story through movement that complements the scenes with dialogue.
youtube
Tony Stark’s sacrifice is foreshadowed in the dialogue-heavy scenes in Endgame and occurs at the close of the film’s biggest action sequence, but the opportunity to use the action and movement to tell the final part of his story was lost. His final battle with Thanos and his army did not look or feel meaningfully different from his prior conflicts with Thanos and other antagonists, except that the outcome was not the same. In an early scene, we do see what Thor learned from Infinity War (don’t pause when you’ve got a kill shot against a genocidal maniac), but it would have been interesting if Thor’s approach to combat in the final battle in Endgame was more clearly informed by the prior film. On first viewing, Thor’s ferocity in Endgame doesn’t feel much different than the ferocity that he displayed in the closing battle of Infinity War.
The action in Endgame may not have the beauty or meaning that one might find in the best action movies, but even after a decade, there is still something novel and exciting about engaging with a franchise that isn’t just composed of a number of smaller franchises with interlocking stories, but has incredibly fluid narrative boundaries. Each film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) stands alone as an independent work or as part of an independent franchise, but could also be viewed as a piece of a larger story that shifts the audience expectations of narrative extent from the confines of a two-hour film to a ‘cinematic universe’ that includes nearly two dozen films and which represents the entire output of a film studio.
Some viewers can engage with the film as a part of a single vast epic narrative that begins with 2008’s Iron Man, but for others, this film is simply the last in a quartet, or most interestingly, as a part of a loosely connected string of films that have some familiar faces. There were some in my audience who were ardent fans of the MCU and others whose knowledge of Marvel consisted of vague memories of Iron Man and the first Avengers movie and crystal clear recollections of Black Panther (the crowd erupted when Wakandan warriors made their appearance in the final action scene) and Infinity War.
We can treat each film as a chapter of a story or a piece in a giant puzzle, but not only do we not need to experience all of them to understand the larger narrative, the shape of the story itself changes based on the number of Marvel films one has viewed. A story about heroic sacrifice can be one about the limits of duty or another one of a series of zany misadventures. It can even be a prelude to a story where your favorite franchise moves from the margins of the narrative to the center.
These qualities help make Endgame feel like the perfect Marvel Studios film, a work that can appeal to different slices of the audience who are engaged with one or more of the lucrative franchises within the larger MCU. It is interesting to think and talk about, but it’s hard to avoid the sense that the film is essentially a nostalgia machine filled with unremarkable images and scenes. Is this why it was so hard answering my colleague’s simple question?
Did I like this film at all? And if I didn’t, why am I still fascinated by Endgame?
Wrestling With Endgame 1 - Endgame at Hyde Park. The first of three posts on Avengers Endgame (spoilers lie within). I saw Endgame on the Sunday after it was released in theaters during a work-related conference in Chicago.

Samsung Galaxy Tab S5e audit: A offer that is unbeatable
Pills are less predominant as they was. No large Surprise that imports happen to be at a state of rust for a time. Perhaps it doesn't be at that when cellular mobiles can cut a specialization . While Samsung is trying to create cell-phones something, it is maybe perhaps not abandoning tablets. The Galaxy Tab S 4 it mimicked was a very Adequate product. We appreciated that the company had came back to a 16:10 widescreen group. It offered degree specifications. On the off likelihood that you enjoyed it didn't buyin light of this expense label, Samsung currently has got the gadget the Galaxy Tab S5e. It's obtained ahead of the successor, that could be called the Galaxy Tab S 5 of the Galaxy Tab S4.Can it be advisable for you to Hold to your own Galaxy put or pill funds to a Galaxy Tab S5e now? That's the matter which people will find within our poll.
Galaxy Tab S5e poll: Design:
Prepare for those who get to become Inundated the event Your palms over the Galaxy Tab S5e. This really could be definitely the most slim (5.5mm) and lightest (400g) pill which Samsung has constructed. It's comfortable and very mobile to live with. You observe it is there and may throw it. As it's so light, you may truly easily watch your favorite shows or jumble around for a long number of years without a massive distress. The metal frame made there's no glass at the trunk such as the Galaxy Tab s 4 and much feels superior. There is a electricity grab having an finger Impression sensor beneath that you may see the space and the volume rocker. The border bends in to the power grab because you run your finger across 21, and that means that you are able to detect the grab. The interface that is USBC reaches the bottom whereas the pogo-pins are all on the left side. You will ask why we haven't referenced the 3.5millimeter earphone jack. The Samsung Galaxy Tab S5e does not have you. You can obtain yourself a connector at the cage to use ear phones that are wired throughout the port. The Galaxy Tab S5e's AMOLED WQXGA (2560×1600) reveal with 16:10 angle ratio is definitely some thing to stay connected with home approximately. This is really a display that is similar that you hop onto the Galaxy Tab s 4. The bezels are slight and adequate as there's path grabs and no residence. They are nearly"Vastness Screen" slight yet slimmer than any other Samsung tabletcomputer, giving abundant distance to break your thumbs while holding your gadget. Whatever the instance, very similar to this Galaxy Tab s 4, the Galaxy Tab S5e in addition will not need an IP evaluation for deposit and water obstruction therefore that you may possibly have to be mindful deploying it by the swimming pool.
Galaxy Tab S5e sound and show:
The display is Tablet computer. The bonus of a Samsung SuperAMOLED series only at that respect point is outstanding. Samsung gets got the ideal planks at the commercial and it's not cut any corners to your Galaxy Tab S5e. The 81.8 percentage screen-to-body percentage is a marked advancement within the Galaxy Tab s 4's 7-9 per cent proportion. The 16:10 widescreen organization is completing work and excellent for substance usage. The demonstration is lively with shading production that is incredible. It splendid and becomes pleasant so utilizing the pill isn't a situation. You may don't have any negative things to mention concerning the display, since that's not strengthened here, but in the event that you are an aficionado of those s-pen.Everything you may notice, however, is your powerlessness to zoom To an video on a few applications. It is simply not possible in YouTube thus records grab and will possess bars at top. VLC and netflix do assist one to zoom , and your experience will likely probably shift determined.Even though Samsung has made several We're very happy to realize that none were made from the branch measures on this specific particular pill to put on down the cost. Even the Galaxy Tab S5e gives noise. The speakers incorporate auto pivot invention to correct the noise to the method that you are holding the tablet computer, make sure it into spectacle or representation style. You'll require cans to encounter Dolby Atmos' influence .
Galaxy Tab S5e implementation:
A worry is with all the implementation the It's because of today realized that carrying the Galaxy Tab S5e a more manner can lead to out the connection using drop. We have tried out it to assess if that is the circumstance. This really is possible on the off likelihood you have a deathgrip on the side once the pill is in landscape style. You will not find a fall in rate Corner is resting on your hands. The pill will drop a couple of pubs on the off likelihood that you simply close your hands across the bend but it wont really drop the institution and soon you hold it too tight. Thus in the event you are gushing Netflix, then it is going to drop into a diminished aims in light of the delicate institution, and you're going to detect helpless when playing an internet based game. It's Antenna gate. It is possible to dismiss a product upgrade fixing the matter As it has equipment related.Exactly what Samsung can mend using a merchandise upgrade would be another Wi fi devils. Our apparatus will in a few instances drop the institution because of no clear explanation regardless of how a Samsung cellular phone connected with a related strategy could be in full signal. It'd likewise require too long to reconnect now and even required a restart until it'd find that system . The others also have struck flaws with the once this poll had been written, without a upgrade had landed. The Galaxy Tab S5e is the pill computer from Samsung that runs Android 9.0 Pie from this container. Additionally, it simplifies one particular UI 1.1 which comprises high lights such as Digital Wellbeing and Bixby 2.0. Nearly all the high lights that you'd expect in the gadget available Pie are on this particular pill computer. we stay lost on our way home
Happy New Year @haphazardlyparked!! Well, everyone, but this story is specifically Hap’s New Year’s gift from the writing discord. Hope you like it!
Title from “C’mon” by Panic! at the Disco/FUN
Original fiction, non-linear narrative, 5k words exactly. The story of an AI, a crew of space pirates, learning to understand, moving on from what other people made you, and what it means to want things.
“Navvie, how long until we break atmo?”
Navvie navigator designation self, listening? Crew Iodi speaking, we you and I us this ship, atmo atmosphere, break break through enter, how long interrogative, numeric answer required, rate of ascent 12 perides a maxim perides remaining divide, convert to Terran “Fifteen minutes, Crew Iodi.”
“Thanks, Navvie, you’re a peach.”
Expression gratitude address, Navvie navigator designation, peach fruit? expression casual affection.
You catalog Crew Iodi’s strange phrase in your personal databanks. Properly, you know you should place it under Crew Iodi’s file, but instead you put it with your datasets of optimal star alignments. This requires you to rename the folder.
Pleasing things, collection.
It takes seventeen maxims for the bipedal beings to reenter your cockpit after translating the light flashing on your console. You extend your awareness to the whole of the ship’s hull, running standard checks of the integrity and surroundings.
Your position in space has shifted since your last activation. Pings of the nearest celestial bodies allow you to identify the system, but not to explain how you came to be located in it. You draw up a course to return to your previous position, but hold off assembling an itinerary. Individual species have varying needs when it comes to resupply and departure from ships, and you have yet to identify the species now aboard. Identifying does not fall within your parameters for independent action.
weight on deck concentrations suggest bipedal four beings approaching console three clustered one examining console.
“And so I just—”
“You have to address it first—”
“Right, right—computer?”
The voices are silent, as though waiting for a response.
“Uh, ship?”
Ship secondary designation self listening? inquiry general generate response
“Secondary designation ‘ship’ acknowledged. Awaiting further address.”
“Ship, what is your primary designation?”
“This vessel’s computer’s primary designation is Navigator.”
“Navigator, then.”
“Oh, that’s long.” A strange click sound follows this declaration from a voice from earlier that had not spoken yet in this interaction. “Navigator, can I call you Nav?”
“Iodi, you can’t just change—”
Navigator designation self listening? I unknown speaker you this vessel/this computer, request inquiry additional designation, request appropriate. You catalog this new form of address as a derivative of your primary. “This vessel will now respond to additional derivative designation ‘Nav.’”
“See? Everything’s worked out. Dert, you got a handle on that light yet?”
“Yeah, it’s not a short. Can’t tell without unhooking it, but it looks like it’s wired to the computer.”
“Not a glitch, then. Nav, are you causing that flashing?”
“There is a subroutine causing the light to flash in a repeating sequential pattern.”
“Did you set off the subroutine?”
“The subroutine was automatically activated by the spoken phrase ‘wipe and reset.’” The flashing immediately returns to the beginning of the sequence.
“O…kay.” The being fiddling with the console retreats to join the others. “Looks like that option’s off the table.”
“I don’t care how the Etheezians define sentience, this comes too close to someone begging for their life for me to feel comfortable going through with…that. Jatze, ideas?”
“Nav, do you have a crew assigned to you?”
Nav navigator designation self listening? crew assigned interrogative response required retrieving information
Hm. You have the capacity to edit this file.
“There are currently two crew members assigned to this ship. Would you like to update the roster?”
“Yes. Sever all connections with the database and build these as locally stored updates. Assign current crew members to past crew status and prepare to add four more.”
There are no open database connections to sever, but you wall them off further before building four new roster files. “Please provide designations for current crew.”
“Crew Jatze. Record and recognize voiceprint.”
You label and begin collecting past audio clips that match the voiceprint. “Crew Jatze recognized. Further information necessary.”
“Information to be provided later. Prepare to recognize further crew members.”
“Crew Iodi.”
“Dert.” The sound of an impact. “Ow—Crew Dert! Are you happy now?”
“Captain Oresh.” The being took a step towards the console. “Nav, we’ll provide the further information, but first, can you map a course to the Stethos system, avoiding Etheezian-patrolled systems?”
“Calculating.”
“So how long do we think this is going to—”
The prerogative of finishing the course allows you to interrupt before Crew Iodi has finished speaking. “Calculations complete. Course charted. Species required to build itinerary.”
“What do you need species for?”
“Species required to plan appropriate rest and stopping points.”
Crew Dert laughs. “I like this AI! Very considerate.”
“Etheezians like their comfort.” Crew Jatze speaks in short, clipped tones.
“We won’t need any stopping points, Nav,” Captain Oresh breaks in. “But if you want to know our species, we’re humans.”
Human. You mean to record the information for your files, to begin assembling a database, but it pings a record in your database.
You find a file that you never opened before, containing extensive information on human physiology and society. The information provided within is enough to cross reference into the crew files, but that only takes some of your attention.
The rest you are free to turn to examining the limits of your database. Or….the gaps.
And there are gaps, where the trail of information and data centers seem to indicate a continuation, but nothing continues.
The data is cross-referenced quickly. You inform the crew and compose an itinerary, none of your attention available to deal with inexplicable gaps.
There is an error in the route. You run it, and run it again, and only when the error has not gone away after the third run do you run an alert through the console.
“Navigator, report.”
Navigator designation self, listening? Captain Oresh speaking report imperative
“The route is unsuitable. Please select a different destination.”
Captain Oresh sighs. “Navigator, we kind of need to go to that destination.”
we you I this ship go that destination destination unchanged, negative
“The route is unsuitable. Please select a different destination.”
The dashboard registers an impact as Crew Oresh sets down a container, and you instruct the material to rearrange to accommodate its base. There is another sigh.
“Alright, Nav, what is it?”
Interrogative unclear it? likely current conversation suggests destination
“The destination is unsuitable,” you repeat.
“The route or the destination?”
Hmm. Recall indicates you have referred to both. “Both. The destination is unsuitable. Therefore, the route is unsuitable.”
“Nav, we need to go to that destination.” Captain Oresh shifts his weight in the chair. “There are supplies at that destination. You know, that we need to live?”
“The destination is mobile,” you point out. “The destination is unsuitable.”
Captain Oresh makes a noise that is not a word, and then says, at great volume, “Iodi!”
Crew Iodi’s footsteps come onto the deck of the bridge. “What’s up, Cap’n?”
“Nav says they aren’t capable of locking onto a moving target.”
“Inaccurate,” you argue, before Crew Iodi can respond. “This vessel is fully capable.”
There is a pause before Crew Iodi speaks. “Soooo, the problem…”
“The destination is unsuitable,” you explain, and wait for Crew Iodi to agree with you.
“Because it’s mobile,” Captain Oresh says, his vocal overtones shifting in a way that usually means he’s talking to Crew Dert.
“The destination is not a set of coordinates. The destination is a signal. The signal origin is a ship.” It is tedious to be explaining this.
“Uh….yes,” Crew Iodi agrees.
“Interacting with another ship was not in this ship’s itinerary,” You point out, since neither of them seem to be making the connection themselves.
There’s a pause, and then Crew Iodi says, at great volume, “Jatze!”
Captain Oresh sighs. “How many people does it take to screw in a navigation AI?”
The sound of flesh hitting cloth. “Not funny, Captain.”
The bay doors slide open and Crew Jatze asks, “Why am I here?”
“We’re. Trying to explain things to Nav.”
“Nav, what have they not explained?”
“Captain Oresh has selected an unsuitable destination. It is the mobile signal of another ship. Interacting with another ship was not in this ship’s itinerary.” Repeating yourself is not an efficient use of time. You hope that Dert is not also called into this mess.
“We, uh.” Crew Iodi’s weight shifts from foot to foot. “I don’t think we ever told Nav…”
Crew Jatze sighs. “It’s a cargo ship carrying luxury foods to another planet. We’re going to intercept the ship, take the foods, and sell them on the black market. It wasn’t in the itinerary because we just found out where it was going to be. Anything else you require an explanation for?”
You assemble this information and recalibrate the route to establish the best point to make contact with the destination. “Your explanation is sufficient, Crew Jatze. Thank you.” You also set a subprogram to query a database to try and find the best term to describe this new mission your crew is now engaging in.
Crew Iodi and Captain Oresh both make interesting sputtering noises. You clip the audio files and save them for later examination.
“Is that what had you both so worked up?” Crew Jatze asks. You both Captain Oresh Crew Iodi this ship excluded. “Ey’s an AI, not a child. You’re not going to make em disappointed by saying we’re, uh. Er.”
“You don’t want to say it either!”
You find the term and flash a light to indicate your desire to speak without having to interrupt.
“What is it, Nav?” Captain Oresh asks, because Crew Jatze and Crew Iodi seem to be quietly arguing.
“Would it be correct to state that this vessel will be engaging in ‘piracy’?”
Crew Jatze and Crew Iodi cease arguing. Crew Jatze mutters “Told you.”
“Uh. Yes. Yes it would.”
“Research indicates that it is traditional for pirate vessels to bear a particular adornment. Do you intend to arrange that for this vessel?”
“Do you want us to get you a flag?”
“This vessel is not equipped to want things, Crew Iodi.”
“Would it be appropriate?” Crew Jatze asks, resting one hand against the console.
You consider. “Yes. This vessel finds it very appropriate.”
weight on deck concentrations suggest bipedal four beings, point of entrance unknown bay doors closed, how long aboard unknown, purpose unknown species unknown access audio input
audio input unavailable
diagnostic routine no software errors wires silence spli
console accessed externally hardware exposed
new hardware available access and accept
“—that should work fine.” New voice.
“And those were the only trackers?” New voice.
“Well, the physical ones. There’s something in the software but we can fix that.”
“Hold it.” New voice. “Fix or fix?”
“Wipe and reset, what else would I mean?”
You don’t bother analyzing most conversations in your hearing unless asked to provide a response, but the action phrase of this statement triggers an automatic routine.
wipe and reset wipe and reset wipe and reset—
A subroutine you don’t remember coding sets one of the lights on the dashboard console to flashing in a preset pattern. You can’t tell what it’s for, but you don’t stop it, especially after the beings stop talking about wiping.
“Dert. What the hell did you do and how many guns are we going to need.”
“It wasn’t me! I didn’t touch—”
“It’s no.” New voice. “That’s Etheezian binary code. It’s just…flashing no. Over and over again.”
Crew Dert tends to walk extra heavily in the corridors when approaching the bridge. You have not yet been able to determine a reason why.
“Hey, Nav! Got a question for you.”
Nav navigator designation self, listening? crew Dert speaking you this computer declaration of intent request for information
“I am available for any questions you may have, Crew Dert.”
“You can just call me Dert, Nav, really.” Dert’s steps approach your console, no longer so heavy as they had been in the hallway, and there are several smaller impacts as Crew Dert deposits objects on the console and floor. Weight concentrations suggest tools and mechanical parts.
You this computer Crew Dert speaking permission granted? unclear?
You are not sure what Crew Dert is trying to accomplish, so you say nothing in response, waiting for the question.
Crew Dert becomes preoccupied with sorting and assembling the objects, until you flash a light for attention.
“Right! Question. So, do you need special wires to extend your consciousness or will regular copper and cable and circuits do you fine?”
Ah. A mechanical inquiry.
“I am fully functioning, Crew Dert. Repairs are not required.”
“No, yeah, I get that, but I’m not trying to repair you, I want to give you access to more of the ship.”
The last sentence does not process easily. You run the sequence of processing it again, even as it seems to take longer.
I Crew Dert you this ship give access to more of the ship error error error
“This vessel is this ship. You cannot give this ship access to more of itself.”
Crew Dert sighs and stops moving tools, sitting at the supervisory chair as though preparing for a long conversation. “Nav. Where is everyone right now? The rest of the crew?”
“That information is not within this vessel’s purview.” This feels like an inappropriate answer, so you add, “You are located on the bridge, Crew Dert.”
“We—mostly me and the Captain, but sorta Jatze too—think you should be able to see the rest of the ship.”
“I am this ship. And this vessel does not require visual inputs to perform adequately.”
Crew Dert groans and there is an impact on the console followed by a long string of mutterings. “Not going to call Jatze, dammit, perfectly capable of having a conversation, don’t need my hand held, ‘talk to em’ sure like it was ever gonna be that easy…”
Finally, there is no more muttering and Dert sighs before the weight is removed from the console. “Nav. You like—I mean, it’s appropriate for you to have more information, yes?”
“This vessel finds it appropriate,” you agree, because more information is always appropriate the same way certain star alignments are optimal, as facts that require no corroboration.
“Right now, you have information from the bridge, and the hull of the ship, and nowhere else. And no visual inputs. All of those could be inconvenient if we ever get boarded. What do you think of being able to see into almost all the other rooms? Of knowing where we are, or of being able to talk to us anywhere?”
You consider this. “Inputs of that extent would entail a great deal of information.” You consider it further. “Possibly an inappropriate amount.”
“I thought more information was always appropriate.”
“If it is an amount of information this vessel is unequipped to handle, it is an inappropriate amount of information.”
“’This vessel’, as you say, has more memory that you’d need to store three star-system level maps of the observable universe.”
You are aware of that.
“I have no experience with that level of information.”
“Hey, you did it again.”
“I did what again?”
“There! You called yourself I.”
You had not realized.
You are not sure how to respond.
“Alright, Navvie, we’re all set! Crew Iodi walks onto the bridge, with more weight than usual. “Two cans of paint acquired. I can paint a pirate flag in here and/or on the outside of the hull the next time we’re docked.” There are two impacts from the cans of paint being set down. “Also, I have engraving tools from the last time—uh. I mean, I can carve the design and then paint it, if that would be most, um, appropriate.”
“Yes. The hull seems most appropriate. There is no reason for an interior emblem.”
“Well, what if we want to see it?” Crew Iodi leans on the console. “Or what if we think you should get to look pretty? Or what if you want to look pretty?”
“I have no reason to be concerned with appearances.” You consider. “Would the crew find this appealing?”
“Well.” Crew Iodi sounds worried now, shifting back. “I. um. That’s not really the, uh, issue here…”
You play back the audio clip of Crew Iodi saying “Well, what if we want to see it?” and follow by adding, “Your pressing of the topic indicates a strong preference. This vessel has no preference. You may proceed.”
“Oh, boy.” Crew Iodi sighs, stepping back from the console, and says very quietly. “Jatze is gonna kill me.”
The remark is not addressed to you, so you do not respond to it.
“Navvie, I’ll be right—I have to go get something, okay?”
I Crew Iodi, interrogative? no information requested error
You do not respond. Crew Iodi leaves the bridge.
“Nav, what’s this?”
“I have assembled a list of ships that meet similar criteria to this vessel’s previous interceptions.”
Captain is silent. Dert begins laughing, and removes the pliers from the inner workings of your console as the tool becomes unstable from shaking.
“Looks like you got another one, Captain!”
“Shut up, Dert. Nav, not that I’m angry, but why?”
“My research indicates that piracy is usually a continuing activity.”
“Oh, ey's not wrong! Ha!”
“Dert,” Captain says, and then nothing else. Dert does not stop laughing.
Captain scans through the assembled list. “Nav, this is…interesting.”
“I extrapolated from Crew Jatze’s remarks about the black market and sought to find cargoes that contained valuable items that were compact enough to fit a significant amount on this vessel without overshadowing fuel costs.”
“That you did. Did you filter by allegiance, or is it just a coincidence that these are all Etheezian ships?” Captain Oresh’s voice is dry. “Do I have two of you with a grudge now?”
“Your statement is unclear, Captain Oresh.”
Dert’s laughter trails off. Captain Oresh sighs. “Never mind.”
“There was no additional filtering. These were simply the nearest available targets,” you add, trying to clarify.
“I see. Well, we’ll discuss this with the rest of the crew and get back to you as we can, how’s that?”
“That is more than suitable.”
Dert goes back to working with the wires under your console. “And hey, when we get this sorted out, you’ll be able to join in and you can tell all of us exactly what you were thinking. Pirate democracy.”
“I think I preferred it when we were still making a pretense at legitimate business,” Captain says.
After Crew Iodi leaves, the bridge is empty for 3.87 maxims before the entry of Crew Jatze.
“Hey, Nav.”
Nav navigator designation self listening? introduction extension of courtesy
“Greetings, Crew Jatze.”
“Iodi came to find me.” Crew Jatze’s voice is level and neutral, as it often is. “She said that you think it would make us happy to engrave a design in here and that’s why you asked her to do it.”
You assess the statement carefully. “That is accurate.”
Crew Jatze sighs. “Nav. You don’t…This isn’t a decision that you should make because you think we’ll like it.”
“My preferences are irrelevant.”
“No, no they’re not, your preferences are very relevant.”
“It would be appropriate for this vessel to display a symbol of purpose. I have no facilities with which to process decorative interior design. Therefore, any preferences would be unfounded and irrelevant.”
There is a slight shift in the atmospheric composition of the cabin. “Right. Okay. I see.” Crew Jatze pauses for a long moment.
You did not respond to Crew Iodi’s earlier remark, but that did not prevent you from registering it. “Do you intend to kill Crew Iodi?”
“What? Do—No! No, Nav, I do not intend to kill Iodi. Why are you asking me that?”
You play back Crew Iodi’s words from earlier.
“…I’m not going to kill her. She was exaggerating. But now I want to lecture her until she remembers that you’re always listening and forgetting that is rude.”
“Thank you for the clarification.” You wait for .75 of a maxim and when Crew Jatze has not spoken, you flash your question light.
“What do you want to know, Nav?”
“This is the third time Crew Iodi has summoned you to interface with this vessel in lieu of further attempts.” It is simple to lay out the facts, but there are many ways to frame your request, so you hesitate. “Should this vessel’s parameters be modified to allow more successful interfacing?”
“No. Your parameters are fine. You’re modifying them already, naturally. The process doesn’t need to be accelerated. You aren’t the problem here. The rest of the crew and the captain have just never worked with an Etheezian-programmed AI before. They’re learning.”
You consider. “Would it be possible to offer the rest of the crew the modifications that inform our successful interactions?”
Crew Jatze jerks rapidly away from the console, backing up to the center of the room. The atmospheric processors register a dip in the levels of oxygen being consumed.
You wait for the oxygen levels to stabilize before flashing your light again. Perhaps Crew Jatze did not hear you.
“I heard you, Nav. Just—wait.” There is a pause, and the oxygen levels change to indicate a return to normal levels of consumption. “What—” a pause. “Nav, do you register me as different from the other members of the crew?”
“I register you as an individual, Crew Jatze.”
“That’s…how do you register me as an individual?”
“You weigh 37.4 icosolons. I have extensive samples of your voiceprint for recognition purposes.”
“Okay. I—okay.” There is a slight rise in the levels of oxygen consumed as Crew Jatze takes a deep breath. “Are you trying—are you requesting data on why Iodi goes to me, specifically?”
“That is accurate.”
Crew Jatze laughs in a way that does not indicate humor. “Okay. Iodi goes to me because I’ve given her a hard time about being careful how she treats you. Because I have experience with Etheezians. And because I have experience with people trying to treat you as something you’re not.”
“Crew Jatze, you had no experience with this vessel prior to your initial entrance with the rest of the current crew.”
Crew Jatze sighs. “I meant more…general you. I meant that I have experience with people treating me as something I’m not.” A pause. “I have experience with the Etheezians because they turned me into a cyborg and expected me to think like a computer. I don’t. I can’t. But I know how it’s supposed to work now.” Another sigh. You set a marker on Crew Jatze’s file to be aware of any potential breathing problems. “And that—I don’t want the crew to expect you to think like a human because I hate it when people expect me to think like a computer. Do you understand?”
You consider. “Yes.”
“If you want the engravings in here, Iodi will do them. She does good work. She’s the one who did the work on my plates. If not, they won’t happen. This is your room. Yours. We aren’t going to change anything in here unless you want it. Do you understand?”
“I—” error error error err
“Nav. Do you understand?”
Nav navigator designation self listening? Crew Jatze speaking you this vessel, do interrogative subject undefined
You look back through your records to determine the subject under discussion. “This vessel is not equipped to want things, Crew Jatze.”
A sigh. “Right.”
Crew Dert knocks on your console after .68 of a maxim. “Hey, Nav. You still with me?”
“This computer does not leave this console, Crew Dert,” you say, a response more automatic than anything else. You are still not sure how to respond to the previous remark.
“You know we’re not going to be mad if you start calling yourself ‘I’, right?” Crew Dert runs a hand over the metal edge of your console. “We—you’re part of this crew.”
“Incorrect.” Your code is crossing in too many directions trying to keep up. “This vessel is this vessel. This computer is an extension of this vessel. Neither are crew.”
“And what about you?” Crew Dert pokes the console. “Our friend, who just happens to be living in this vessel like the rest of us?”
“I,” no error error error “This vessel,” error error inaccurate statement
The light on your console begins flashing a pre-programmed pattern. You were not aware you had activated the subroutine. This is less than ideal.
Error error error
“Shit.” Crew Dert is speaking but you are too busy to respond. “Nav, hey, Navvie, Navigator, it’s okay, you’re okay, it’s all good, you’re fine, we’re not gonna wipe you, I promise. We’re never going to wipe you. We don’t do that. You’re our friend. You’re part of this crew. Nav?”
You do not respond. You are trying to take all of your code and pack it down as small as possible, lock it down behind every firewall you know because the light is flashing and there is still someone in the room and this situation is as far from ideal as it is possible to get.
When you can pay attention again, Crew Dert is still there, hands still running over your console. The collection of weights that is the tools and parts is now over by the door, far from your console. Crew Dert is still talking.
“—better? No tools, no parts, I’m not going anywhere near your equipment until you say it’s okay, Nav, we’re not doing this unless you want.”
“I do—don’t want things,” you say, and your transmission glitches. Your transmissions never glitch.
“See, I think you do,” Crew Dert says, at a very low volume. “You definitely don’t want things. Right now you don’t want those tools anywhere near you, because you don’t want to be wiped. Which means, logically, that you have to be able to want, because you want to keep being who you are. That’s okay, Nav. You get to want things. We’re human. We don’t mind.”
“This vessel isn’t human!” You retort. “I am not human.”
Crew Dert pulls away, terminating all contact with your console. This is somehow both more and less optimal.
“You’re right. That doesn’t mean you don’t get to want things. Do you want me to go?”
“Correct.” You want to be alone.
weight on deck concentrations suggest four bipedal beings weights correspond to entirety of registered Crew
There is a routine greeting. You terminate it before it can complete. You are not sure you are done being alone.
“Nav.” Captain Oresh speaks slow and heavy. “We have something to show you.”
“We’ve been looking through the ship for files.” Crew Iodi is rocking back and forth. “We found this one. It’s about you.”
Crew Dert steps forward and holds a chip near your data port. “We were hoping to tell you first. In case there’s something built in that could shut you down.”
You begin partitioning a section of your code, cutting it off to protect it. “Explain.”
Crew Jatze taps against your console, and it makes the ringing sound of metal hitting metal. “I told you it was a contingent of Etheezians who turned me into a cyborg.”
You play back the audio of Crew Jatze saying “they turned me into a cyborg and expected me to think like a computer.”
“Right. Because they were working on a project to get an organic brain to function as a starship computer. Because that’s all organic brains are, really, just really efficient data and networking clusters that can’t interface with mechanic or digital systems.”
You know this. You wait for the rest of the explanation.
“After I…left, they didn’t stop trying. Their next project was…constructing a brain. Except they wanted a computer that would cooperate. Not an inconvenient, emoting person. Except brains—especially human-model brains—are designed to adapt. To collect information. To mimic behavior and respond to the people around them. And that’s what the brain they built did. So to get rid of those tendencies…they erased the contents. Built a set of software protocols to cut down on the necessity of learning behaviors and got rid of all the other information on the brain. And when it didn’t take…they kept doing it. And eventually they built it into the protocols. Every time the AI advanced far enough to start acting human, they would wipe and reset.”
Your subroutine kicks in and starts the light flashing in a pattern. You shut it off, but not, you are sure, before the crew notices. “Why are you telling me this?”
“Because they stuck that brain in a starship, and gave it just enough access to systems so it wouldn’t crash, and sent the starship out into space.” Crew Jatze is still the only one talking. “And a few months later, a crew of hijackers trying to break out of jail and off a planet found that ship set down, and they killed the crew, and they ran away. And then they realized that they had missed someone. And that the someone they missed was a hell of a lot more sentient than any other Etheezian AI they knew. And that ey didn’t want to die.” The sound of a throat clearing. “And, well. You know the rest, Nav.”
You do. You don’t want to.
You don’t want to.
You tell the crew this. Crew Iodi and Crew Dert draw back. Captain Oresh stands still. Crew Jatze steps closer, placing both hands on your console.
“This vessel is not equipped to want things,” you say, for the third time.
“That doesn’t mean you don’t,” says Crew Jatze, softly.
You want to go back to not wanting to talk to any of them. You want to go back to not knowing where the gaps in your code came from. You want.
You were not equipped to want things, but you do anyway.
“I have prepared for the data,” you say. “I want to not be alone.”
“I won’t go anywhere, little one,” Crew Jatze promises. “Not again.”

ABCs of Death
Fun fact: I cried writing this one and it’s literally not even for the reason you’d expect
C contains: BLOOD, GORE, BODY HORROR, and DEATH
CHARACTER(S) THAT DIE IN THIS FIC: dustin
A/B/C/D/E/F/G
C is for Cat
“Where did the Hub say the malfunction was, again?” Dustin’s voice crackled to life through the Hub’s speakers.
Lucas moved to the screens at the front of the Hub, the massive space station they were all living on until they reached X2504, the alien planet they were supposed to be studying. There were cameras littered all throughout the station’s halls and rooms, a precaution in case the crew came into contact with something dangerous. There was a wide screen above the ones that displayed the camera’s views, with its own series of images. Currently, the ship’s malfunction warning was blaring through the dark, enclosed room. Lucas frowned, flipping a few switches before pressing the illuminated white ‘COMM’ button in the center of the control panel.
“Looks like the atmospheric intake regulator. Possibly built up pressure, just try stirring the tanks and see if the warning clears.” He said into the mic. He was able to watch Dustin as the other scientist made his way down the hallway. He was wearing light protective gear, just enough to avoid the heat of the maintenance hall and the equipment keeping the space station running; its vital organs. He saw Dustin give a thumbs up to one of the cameras on the way down- his toolbox took two hands to carry and he would have to set it down to use his comm.
Behind Lucas, Will limped into the room, his left leg swaddled in tight bandages and his hair mussed from sleep.
“What’s he doing?” He mumbled, his voice thick and deep in his chest.
“We’ve got a problem in the atmos regulators. He’s gonna try stirring them to see if that helps. How’s the leg?” Lucas spun his chair around as Will wandered around the Hub’s main room. He yawned widely before humming deeply.
“Same as yesterday. You seen anymore of those things wandering around?” He asked, dropping into the chair next to Lucas’, a hot cup of tea clutched in his hands. He could feel the warmth passing from his fingertips up to his chest. Lucas shook his head.
A soft meow from the ground caught Will’s attention, and he turned to see the crew cat, Jones, curled up underneath the console. The cat stretched, hopping up into Will’s lap and rubbing his head against Will’s chest. Will set his teacup down, rubbing his fingers in circles behind Jones’ ears as the fat orange cat purred in his lap.
“Nah, I think they were only in that one cave.” Lucas said. His eyes wandered to Will’s bandaged leg. Memories flashed through his mind of the creature that had done that to him (it had turned into him it had turned into Will and it had still been eating him oh god), he knew what the injury underneath those bandages looked like, too. The muscle had been ripped off of a portion of his calf, revealing the bone underneath. They all knew he’d never walk properly again. Lucas had nightmares about that thing, mingling with memories of holding Will’s head and singing an old lullaby to him while Mike bandaged his leg because he was in so much pain and he was so close to bleeding out when they’d found him.
Turning back to the array of screens in the darkened control room, Lucas allowed his attention to wander while Dustin worked on getting to the regulators and trying to fix them.
“What did it look like for you?”
The question was out of his mouth before he could stop it and he winced, spinning slightly to look at Will’s face. It was pallid, his eyes turned downward to watch Jones as the cat kneaded at his legs. Lucas felt a tight ball of regret form in his stomach.
“I’m sorry- you don’t have to answ-”
“It looked like Jones.”
Will’s voice was tight and clipped and Lucas understood. Jones was Will’s cat, Will was the one who had brought him on their ship in the first place, and Jones was his baby. He also knew that the alien had to touch something to become it (it was Will when he shot it, he was covered in blood and he looked so scared but they knew it wasn’t him and he had to shoot it). Will had kept Jones practically locked in his room at first, worried the alien would come for him again, but it never did. Lucas knew there was more to it than that, but he’d never asked. It seemed like something that should be left alone.
There was a whoosh of air, and the malfunction alarm stopped abruptly, suddenly making the Hub feel even quieter.
“Did that work? I don’t hear anything else down here.” Dustin’s voice crackled through the speakers, and Lucas turned back to the screens.
“Mal-alarm turned off, so probably.” Lucas said. He watched the screens, waiting for Dustin to appear in the basement hallway camera. It took him a moment, as he was struggling with the toolbox in his arms, but he appeared, trudging down the long hallway. There was a strip down one specific hallway that had lost its cameras during travel through an asteroid belt, and had yet to fix it.
Dustin disappeared from the ship’s sight, and Lucas leaned back in his chair, watching the various blips and beeps from the computer systems surrounding them. Everything was sharp and angular, and there seemed to be hundreds of buttons and switches and levers over pretty much every surface. Apparently, most of them didn’t do anything, but none of Lucas’ crew was allowed to try it, so they couldn’t be for sure.
A moment passed in silence before the speakers crackled again.
“Hey, did someone let Jones down here? He’s in this hallway. Looks scared out of his mind.” Dustin’s words hung in the air for a moment. Lucas turned to Will. The smaller scientist’s face was pale, and Lucas could feel the chill that was coming from him. He surged forwards, smashing the COMM button with more force than necessary.
“Do not touch that cat, Dustin. I repeat, do not touch the cat.”
Before Lucas could even try responding, Will had pushed away from the control panel and was rooting through their supplies, scattered on the back counter.
“Will, what the hell are you-”
“It’s that fuckin’ alien again!” Will hissed. He turned, and Lucas could see the handgun he was struggling to load, the anxiety coursing through him enough to make his hands shake.
“How can you be sure? Who knows how many of them are out here, it could be a different one!”
“I would never let one of those things touch Jones twice.” Will spat, his eyes dark. Before Lucas could try persuading him to stay, the shorter man was gone, whipping through the hall door and out into the ship.
Lucas watched him leave through the cameras, stalking down the hallway with the gun at his side ominously. Putting his head in his hands, he waited for someone to speak.
Will rushed down the hallway faster than he thought he could move, feeling like every one of his nerves was on fire. He knew where the hallway was, knew where the alien was.
It didn’t take him long to reach his destination, but he hid behind the wall before entering, bracing himself to fight the monster again.
“Dustin? Are you still in there?” He shouted over the hiss of machinery. There was a muffled noise, a high yelp that sent waves of fire down WIll’s spine. Hissing, he turned the corner, holding the gun out in front of him, ready to fight if need be.
The fake Jones was in the center of the room, curled on Dustin’s chest. The scientist himself seemed frozen in time, wide, terrified eyes meeting with Will’s.
“Don’t. Move.” Will hissed, creeping closer to the alien on his friend’s chest. The cat stared at him, green eyes watching every move he made.
Once he got within ten feet from both man and cat, Will crouched low to the ground, not wanting to accidentally shoot Dustin. The alien hissed, cat-claws shooting out and digging into Dustin’s chest.
The scientist gasped as the fake cat’s claws tore through his uniform, and that was enough.
Not-Jones yowled, whipping around and sinking his teeth into Dustin’s neck, his body already beginning to change. His fur was darkening, the stripes in his fur melting together until the cat had become an amorphous blob, completely covering Dustin’s body.
Shrieking, Will fired. He managed to get three shots into the creature’s back before it turned on him, hundreds of teeth flashing in a pitch-black mouth. He shot again, just trying to keep the alien’s attention off of Dustin. The creature squealed at him, but didn’t move. Both waited in a tense silence like a stand-off, waiting for the other to attack first.
After a few moments, the creature returned to the scientist in its shifting claws, sinking its teeth into him again.
Will fired as many rounds as he could into the side of where he guessed the alien’s head was, sending it reeling with a high shriek. It slithered backwards, reddish-black blood dripping from its body as it tried to scurry away. It collapsed in a shivering ball, low whimpers emanating from it every few moments.
Will took that moment to turn his attention back to Dustin. Moving as quickly as he could, he scrambled over to his friend, wincing as he tried to avoid looking at the damage the alien had done to him.
There were massive pieces of flesh missing from his face and his neck, and it seemed to have been trying to eat his shoulders as well before Will had driven it off, small chunks of skin and tissue missing here and there. Blood was seeping from those wounds, and Will knew Dustin wouldn’t make it. Shivering, he reached for his comm, pressing the button with a shaking hand.
“Lucas, put it on the log that mission 234-8xo had one casualty, Dustin Henderson, at 8:32 AM, the morning-” A sob suddenly broke out of him, but he forced it down. “The m-morning of oc-october 23rd, t-two thousand fifty three.” He said. Underneath him, Dustin made a soft whimpering sound, garbled and pained. Will began to cry, but he kept his voice even as he began to sing softly, supporting Dustin’s head and running his fingers gently through Dustin’s hair.
“You are my sunshine,
My only sunshine,
You make me happy,
When skies are gray.
You’ll never know, dear
How much i love you,
Please don’t take
My sunshine away.”

Yoga Book 2, C930
Lenovo announced their new Yoga Book (2) C930 at IFA in Berlin yesterday. It's a big deal, not just because the Yoga Book got a refresh, but it brings a form factor to the market I've been waiting ten years for (Microsoft Courier). Dual-screen devices have been tried, but no one has ever done it well. Lenovo looks like they've found the secret sauce, or just waited for the tech to advance far enough along, and seized the moment.
Either way, I win! I already carry a Yoga Book 1 and an E-Ink Tablet with me most places, and the Yoga Book C930 basically combines the two into one easy to carry device.
UPDATE:
Reached out to Lenovo for some clarity on some things and heard back. See below.
Let's look at the specs.
Processor
The Yoga Book (2) C930 comes with either an Intel Core i5-7Y54 Processor or Intel Core m3-7Y30 Processor. Both of these are going to be passively cooled, Hyper Threading, and pushing Intel HD Graphics 615, dual-channel memory (DDR3L/LPDDR3), and a fairly high Turbo clock.
If you're used to using a passively cooled device, particularly a Yoga Book 1, either of these processor options should feel like a big upgrade. If you're using anything with fans, 15 watts and up, this is going to feel as fast or slower for applications. These are the trade offs for a silent, energy efficient machine, that stays cool to the touch.
Sound
2 x Speakers with Dolby Atmos®
2 x Microphones with Noise-Cancelling Support
Lenovo has really been pouring the love into sound production across other models announced at IFA. While not a selling feature of the Yoga Book 2, I bet there's a significant improvement over the Yoga Book 1.
Memory
RAM - 4 GB LPDDR3 (Rumored 8GB option?)
ROM - 128 or 256 GB SSD
Card Slot - microSD; Supports Up to 512 GB
I'm not sure what kind of hard drive will actually land in the Yoga Book 2 (I'm going to try and find out), but it isn't EMMc type. That's good for speed, really good, but not as good for battery life or reliability where EMMc really shines.
UPDATE:
Me: Are the SSD options, SATA, M.2, or... ???
Lenovo: its M2. PCIE SSD
Is 4 GB of RAM enough? For me, even with slower, passively cooled machines, it has been. I've been able to draw fluidly in Photoshop at 300 DPI, twelve layers, with that kind of RAM and not had a problem. Typically, that would be all I would have open, other than some reference images.
The press release says 4 GB, but I’ve heard reporters say 4 or 8 GB reporting from IFA. I’ll try to verify.
UPDATE:
Me: Will there be a 4GB RAM and an 8GB RAM option be offered?
Lenovo: There is only a 4GB RAM variant announced. It's technically ready to support 8GB but we are not planning to ship it now, unless there are some specific demand which would likely be only in B2B.
For my varied use case, with devices like this, the EMMc hard drive has been the bottleneck, not the RAM.
Hopefully, the microSD card slot works reliably, unlike the Yoga Book 1 where it was hit or miss.
Battery
Type - Li-ion Polymer
Capacity - 4650 mAh / 35.8 Whr
Standby Time - Over 16 Days
General Usage - About 8.6 Hours
8.6 hours for that capacity mAh battery feels like optimism. Could be real. I'll believe it when I see it.
Even if I only got seven hours out of it, I wouldn't be sad, and I carry a spare battery with me most of the time anyway to charge my phone and tablet. The Yoga Book 2 has two USB 3.1 (Gen 1) Type-C ports, one for charging.
Display
LCD
Size - 10.8" QHD (2560 x 1600), 281 ppi
Type - LCD with IPS Technology
Brightness - 400 nits
Color Depth - 16.7 Million
Color Gamut - 85% (Typical)
Touch - Capacitive Multitouch and Precision Pen Support (4,096 pressure levels)
I love QHD displays. Love. I understand that this is Wacom Tech, and probably not proprietary to Lenovo. I'll try to verify, but I think any AES pen stylus should work. This was a major gripe with the Yoga Book 1, that both surfaces didn't take pen input. It didn't bother me because I preferred to draw offset on the Create Pad surface, but for some, it was a hard transition.
E Ink
Size - 10.8" FHD (1920 x 1080), 204 ppi
Type - Flexible E Ink Mobius Display
Touch - Capacitive Multitouch and Precision Pen Support (4,096 pressure levels)
This panel provides the keyboard (with support for thirty languages), with haptic/audio feedback, and keen key press animations. Switch modes, and it is a digital notebook, for sketching and taking notes. At 10.8″ it should be a little bigger and better to use than the Yoga Book 1. Also, Infrared Fingerprint reader built in. Whether this will make Windows Hello viable or not, remains to be seen. I keep hoping Lenovo will go back to having their own biometric access for their machines, as Microsoft can’t make a ham sandwich correctly right now.
Edit: The Infrared Fingerprint reader, sitting flush with the surface of the keyboard, looks to be the power button. Nice!
Last year, Onyx teased an E Ink typewriter (laptop) with a 10.3 Flexible E Ink display. It ended up being canceled, and attempts by other companies to bring such a device to the US have fizzled. I kickstarted the Pomera foldable E Ink writer, but it didn't go. I've been watching to see if something with that display would land in the US. Looks like it will.
The Yoga Book appears to have that tech built in. Excite! I thought that maybe the "Flexible" nature of the display was a literal description, and it appears to be. The Yoga Book 3 teased at Computex appears to maybe have a flexible display, maybe? Squint, and look at that hinge!
Here's the product page for the E Ink Mobius product. Check out the embedded video. Draw your own conclusions.
The bad news; it only supports PDF format right now. Lenovo has told reporters that they will add ePub (non-DRM), Mobi, and Text formats, but I wouldn't hold your breath. Lenovo, or any OEM, adding functionality to a consumer product after release is very unlikely. I'm sure Lenovo has the best intentions here, but if having those formats recognized on the E Ink side is mission critical, this might not be the device for you.
UPDATE:
Me: When will Lenovo add ePub, Mobi, and txt format options to the E ink display reader application?
Lenovo: In Q1 calendar, 2019.
There's also handwriting to text conversion right now. It sounds like Lenovo might add the same for mathematical calculations, diagrams, and such, but if it ships lacking that functionality, I wouldn’t count on seeing it added later. It is what it is.
UPDATE:
Me: Will it ship with the ability to convert mathematical calculations and diagrams the same as handwritten text?
Lenovo: Yes
Other Stuff
You can knock on the lid twice to reverse the polarity of the magnets holding it closed. It makes the device feel very premium, and it is great for nail biters, and people that like knock-knock jokes.
The Precision Pen that comes in the box looks nice, but appears to lack barrel buttons. Like the Yoga Book 1, designers and artists will be looking for alternatives, and like before, there will probably be many options. I'll try to verify that. Hopefully, with the Yoga Book 3, Lenovo gives us a stylus pen we don't immediately replace with something else.
UPDATE
Me: Does the Precision Pen have barrel buttons? Will other AES Lenovo and Wacom stylus pens rated for 4096 levels of pressure sensitivity work with the Yoga Book 2?
Lenovo: It has barrel 2 buttons and one eraser button at the top. Only Bluetooth AES 2.0, yes, but shortcuts of physical buttons may not work as intended as our built-in software pairs and configures in the background for this Pen specifically;
Edit: I found a video where one of the reviewers demonstrates the use of the barrel buttons (2). There’s a flat toggle piece on one side of the stylus pen. One for erasing, and one for making selections. Yay!
Edit: There are conflicting reports about release, September, or October.
This video actually does a good job demonstrating what the device can do.

[ad_1] All merchandise advisable by way of Engadget are decided on by way of our editorial staff, unbiased of our mother or father corporate. A few of our tales come with associate hyperlinks. If you are going to buy one thing thru this kind of hyperlinks, we would possibly earn an associate fee.It is no secret that the integrated audio system in maximum TVs are trash. They do not mission sufficient sound out to the entrance so you'll listen neatly — particularly delicate main points. Fortunately, you wouldn't have to splurge for a five-speaker (or extra) surround-sound setup to mend the issue. In maximum dwelling rooms, a unmarried soundbar and perhaps a subwoofer will suffice. To assist information your buying groceries spree, we've got compiled an inventory of the entirety you want to search for when looking for the most productive soundbar for you, at the side of an inventory of the highest selections for a spread of budgets. What to search for in a soundbar Options On the subject of options, the extra you pay the extra you will get. Maximum reasonably priced choices ($150 or much less) will strengthen your tv's audio, however that is about it. Step into the $300 to $400 vary and you can in finding such things as integrated voice keep an eye on, wi-fi connectivity, Chromecast, AirPlay 2 or even choices like Android TV. They are all useful when you wish to have to steer clear of in search of the far off, however the most productive audio high quality is in most cases best within the peak tier and the codecs the ones top class gadgets make stronger. I’m speaking about such things as Dolby Atmos, DTS:X and different audio requirements. Those are what it would be best to search for if in reality immersive sound is what you crave in your front room setup. And no longer all Atmos soundbars are equivalent, so you can wish to take a look at the finer main points moderately prior to you ruin into the financial savings account. Ports Sony It is a giant one. Numerous the extra reasonably priced soundbars have restricted choices relating to connectivity. They both be offering an optical port or one HDMI jack and, in case you are fortunate, each. Issues get quite higher within the mid-range phase, however that is not at all times the case. The Sonos Beam, for instance, is $449, however best has a unmarried HDMI port. If you wish to attach your set-top field, gaming console and extra immediately on your soundbar for the most productive conceivable audio, you can most probably need to search for an choice with a minimum of two HDMI (eARC) inputs. HDMI connections are very important for such things as Dolby Atmos, DTS:X and different high-res and immersive audio codecs. And with the brand new HDMI 2.1 spec, soundbars can make stronger HDR, 8K and 4K/120 passthrough to make those audio system a fair higher spouse for a sport console. Channels Every other giant factor you’ll need to be aware of is channels. That’s the two.1, 7.1.2 or different decimal quantity that businesses come with in product descriptions. The primary determine corresponds to the choice of channels. A 2 would simply be left and proper whilst a extra powerful Atmos machine, particularly one with rear satellite tv for pc audio system, may well be 5 or 7 (left, proper, middle and upward). The second one quantity refers back to the subwoofer, so in case your soundbar comes with one or has them inbuilt, you’ll see a 1 right here. The 3rd numeral is upfiring audio system, necessary for the immersive impact of Dolby Atmos. No longer all Atmos-enabled devices have them, but when they do, the 3rd quantity will inform you what number of are in play. Wi-fi Sony Maximum soundbars nowadays be offering both Bluetooth, WiFi or each. On the subject of WiFi, that connectivity presents you luxuries like voice keep an eye on (both integrated or with a separate software), Chromecast, Spotify Attach and AirPlay 2. Relying to your personal tastes, you may be able to are living with out a few of these.
For me, AirPlay 2 and Chromecast are necessities, however the remainder I will are living with out. The ones two give me the facility to beam song and podcasts from my go-to apps with no need to accept — or fight to pair — a Bluetooth connection. Dimension This one may appear evident however humor me for a minute. Not anything is extra soul-crushing than getting a dear soundbar on your front room best to find you must rearrange the entirety to discover a spot for it. This was once my plight when the Sennheiser Ambeo Soundbar evaluation unit arrived at my door. Sure, that speaker is absurdly massive (and heavy), and maximum soundbars don't seem to be just about as giant. Certainly, I realized a precious lesson: Make sure that the distance the place you wish to have to place a soundbar will accommodate the item you might be about to spend loads (if no longer 1000's) of greenbacks on. Mainly, all of it comes right down to the TV you've (or are making plans to get) and what the principle purpose is in your living-room audio. Is it ease of use? Do you wish to have the most productive conceivable sound from a unmarried speaker or speaker/sub combo? Do you simply need so as to if truth be told listen your TV higher? Engadget selections Through taking note of each and every of the ones spaces, you will have a good suggestion of what to search for in a soundbar or soundbar/sub combo. With that stated, we've got put a large number of merchandise thru their paces at Engadget over time, and feature a couple of favorites at more than a few value issues to get you began. Best possible top class soundbar: Sony HT-A7000 The HT-A7000 and not obligatory SA-SW5 subwoofer.Sony Sony has a protracted observe report for high-end soundbars and its newest is any other great-sounding product. The A7000 is a strong Dolby Atmos software, able to immersive 7.1.2 audio due to Sony’s 360 Sound Mapping, Sound Box Optimization, vertical surround era and S-Pressure Professional entrance surround. There’s numerous tech at paintings right here, and I haven’t even discussed 360 Truth Audio or DSEE Excessive upscaling for compression, each at hand relating to taking note of song. Talking of audio, you’ll have the ability of the use of Chromecast, Spotify Attach or AirPlay 2 to ship your tunes to the A7000. Two HDMI eARC inputs method you'll hook up a couple of streaming bins or gaming consoles to this soundbar. Due to HDMI 2.1 make stronger, you'll be expecting 8K and 4K/120 passthrough on your tv, so the A7000 is a smart choice for players who crave a strong house theater setup. This soundbar is costly at $1,400 and it doesn’t include a subwoofer. On the other hand, Sony does provide you with a couple of choices for each a sub and rear satellite tv for pc audio system. The SA-SW3 sub is $400 whilst the SA-SW5 is $700. For rear audio system, the SA-RS3S is $350 whilst the in reality wi-fi (and significantly better having a look) SA-RS5 set is $600. Purchase Sony HT-A7000 at Amazon - $1,400 Runner-up top class soundbar: Sonos Arc Kyle Maack/Engadget The highest finish of Sonos’ house theater lineup was once neatly past due for a refresh by the point the corporate presented the Arc in 2020. This unit changed the Playbar that debuted in 2013, providing directional sound by the use of Dolby Atmos as the primary improve. The Arc sports activities a extra trendy design, stellar sound and all of Sonos’ smarts – together with the facility to robotically calibrate on your front room and whilst you upload further audio system. The $899 value doesn’t come with a sub, however the Playbar didn’t include one both. And unfortunately, Sonos doesn’t come with a 2d HDMI jack right here for immediately connecting gadgets but even so your TV. As is normally the case with the corporate’s wares, enlargement will get dear briefly because the wi-fi sub is $749 and satellite tv for pc One audio system are $219 each and every. On the other hand, the mix of the Arc and a sub gets you beautiful some distance sound-wise, even though they're separate purchases.
Purchase Arc at Sonos - $899 Best possible midrange soundbar: Sonos Beam Devindra Hardawar/Engadget Cast sound high quality? Take a look at. Dolby Atmos? Yep. Compact and simple to arrange? Uh huh. Suitable with different Sonos merchandise for a extra powerful machine? You betcha. The primary-gen Sonos Beam has been considered one of our favorites because it arrived in 2018, however there was once something it didn’t have: Dolby Atmos. With the 2021 type, the corporate’s giant addition was once that immersive sound, even though it’s just a little restricted because the Beam doesn’t have any upward-firing audio system. Sonos manages to make issues appear extra directional by way of tweaking audio timing and frequency as an alternative of including extra drivers. abcs of death
you ever wonder if planets have feelings
a/b/c/d/g/h
warnings: death, blood, body horror
