So I just finished The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson and was looking up some other people's reviews and analysis to bounce my ideas off of and I found these two. Random fuckening dudes. With such gems as:

• "Shirley Jackson is an okay writer" and the opening paragraph is "not bad"

• There is SOME good writing in the book

• The end fizzles out, as all Shirley Jackson's work does

• There's too much unnecessary content, like the characters talking to each other

• Eleanor came there to disguise herself and kills herself when she's found out

• Eleanor finds something about herself is so unappealing that she kills herself so she can be special

• "The ending needed to be executed better"

• "Why is she afraid at the end??"

the way the most recent pokemon games don't let you turn off the exp share or the affection mechanic bonuses is nothing short of maddening. i think they make great accessibility features If Only They Were Optional and the flavour text is cute, but i want to have a fun casual playthrough that's at least mildly challenging without having to make it a nuzlocke or something. i don't want to feed my starter bitter medicines to make her hate me :(

#JUST LET ME TURN IT OFF... PLEASE....#i can't do nuzlockes i do Not have the willpower to stick to the rules and they stress me out haha #anyway i am a fool who's left all of my DS games in norway and i got a hankering for replaying sinnoh games #so i decided to get shining pearl right. figured it might be fun even if ill miss the 4th gren spritework something fierce #what ensued was a needlessly complicated process just to get a copy that was slightly cheaper than full price nintendo blood money #there's a store that listed shining pearl at a lower price. not brilliant diamond - just pearl #i feel like maybe it's by mistake since that's the price of a nintendo DS cartridge. so maybe wires got crossed #the norwegian version of the store does NOT have the price disparity.#anyway i can't order online without a swedish phone number. and the local store is out of stock #so i have several long walks to the store to get them to order it in for me and then to order it delivered to me etc #and then of course another long walk to pick up the mail BUT I HAVE IT NOW. I HAVE VIDEO GAME #and it's very nice and nostalgic with a couple quality of life upgrades #my first pokemon game was pokemon diamond. when i got it i was still learning english and had no idea what was happening at any time #good times good times #obviously no pokemon run is ever gonna be as challenging as my first ever run #it does not need to be! u can immediately tell that a lot of difficulty in earlier games is that leveling up your team was a hassle #and almost always required grinding. i do not miss that at all ! but the remakes seem to be Extremely Faithful #so they're not rly structured around how fast you can level your whole team #or that your pokemon are gonna start doing extra crits or hold on to last HP before u even get to the third gym #OH WELL #you know what's very exciting for me though. i have a misdreavous!!! they're pearl exclusive and not in platinum #ive always wanted to do a sinnoh run with a misdreavous on my team for some reason

#seriously seriously one of the most beautiful pieces of music i have ever heard #i feel so conflicted thinking about this but i was always afraid to get more into shinee because of jonghyun #i remember the exact day he died when i was in high school and i remember feeling slammed with the news even though he was just guy from...#...clue + note to me and as i have gotten more into kpop in the past few years i have been there for all of shinee's comebacks from don't...#...call me on and i always kept them at a distance bc even though i thought they seemed so cool i was worried to get into them and always...#...feel like someone was missing. and now that my little sister has gotten so into them i have too #and it does feel like someone is missing all of the time and we watch so much content of jonghyun together that sometimes it hits me all...#...over again how unreal and bad it is that he isn't in the world with us anymore #i am so sad too thinking about how i almost didn't hear some of the most beautiful music out of the fear of grieving him #one of the most beautiful voices and i click with his words so so much #like he's my friend and i almost never got to know him :( and that thought it so much worse than the worry of having to miss him :(#it also makes me sick bc if it would have changed anything for him at all. he's still making so many people happy. he's still there for me.#i don't get this emotional every time i listen to him but sometimes it all hits me #music #Spotify

Question for ppl who've read the Doom Patrol comics: Is the emphasis on fathers/fatherhood as prominent in any of the comic runs as it is in the show?

I'm on my...like, 4th or 5th rewatch now and I just got to the end of S1 and I'm sitting here like. Man. This show is so very deeply about fathers, specifically shitty fuckup fathers and their children. And I'm wondering if that's something like Jeremy Carver's Supernatural influence seeping and oozing through or if that's important in the source material too.

I love the show deeply and so I'd love love love to get my hands on the comics eventually but rn I have zero knowledge on them
