Damage Control - 3x08 A Very Supernatural Christmas

“Hfffttthh…!” Sam miserably sucks in air through gritted teeth while Dean wraps a band-aid around his injured finger. He’s missing an entire nail after the Walshes pulled it out with pliers, and Dean has to stop himself from exclaiming a loud and angry “Fudge!” 

For all their quaint-and-cozy 50’s behavior, the pair of pagan gods had been anything but nice: apart from the nasty wound on Sam’s finger, they’re both sporting deep knife cuts on their forearms, and the vote’s still out on who’s got a bigger lump hidden in their hair from getting knocked out. At least Dean got away with all his teeth still in his mouth.

“Hold it up,” Dean instructs, pointing at Sam‘s hand. “It’ll throb less.”

“It’s not that bad,” Sam claims, face pinched.

“Oh yes it is,” Dean chuckles darkly. He’s had his own share of ripped-out or blackened nails to know exactly how much such an injury hurts - small but torturous, and a bitch to deal with until the nail at least starts growing back. “Gimme that arm.”

Gently, he unwraps his bandana from where he’d tied it around the slash below Sam’ elbow.

“Stitches?” Sam asks, his lips a thin line.

Inspecting the wound, Dean shakes his head. “Nah, didn’t go into the muscle. Steri-strips will do the job.”

“And you?”

Sam frowns at the bloody dish towels Dean had wound around his own arms at the Walshes’ house before fleeing the crime scene.

“Same, I guess. I’ll live.”

Ten minutes later, they’re both leaving the motel bathroom with bandages around their forearms and butterfly stitches and steri-strips pulling uncomfortably underneath. In need of an anodyne, Dean walks over to the kitchenette and peers into the fridge. Its contents are bleak: some left-over Chinese takeout food and a half-eaten, re-wrapped sandwich along with a lone bottle of beer.

Not good.

“Are we out of beer?” 

”Huh?” Sam joins him, his right hand protectively cradled in his left. “Looks like it. I don’t think there’s any in the trunk. I hauled two six-packs in here when we arrived.”

“Well, we need some.” Frustrated, Dean thuds the fridge shut a bit too forcefully. “Sad enough that it’s Christmas Eve and we’re sitting in this shithole looking like Bad Santa worked us over. I’m not gonna spend the night sober on top of it.”

He casts a morose glance around the old-fashioned motel room with its smelly, threadbare carpet, outdated furniture and depressing green-brown decor. The ceiling light casts a sickly yellowish sheen over it all, and the lone art print over their beds is so faded, he can’t even tell whether it’s a landscape or a crappy still life of some kind. 

Normally, he doesn’t care all that much. He’s used to living out of duffel bags in cheap motel rooms, and he’s learned to keep his expectations low so he can enjoy the occasional perk - magic fingers, pay tv or even a whirlpool tub - all the more. But it’s Christmas Eve. His last Christmas. And he can’t help longing for some coziness and that childlike feeling of wonder he remembers from his very early childhood. 

Mom. 

She made him Rice Krispie treats when he was little, and he can still remember the scent of her hair when she lifted him up to place the tree topper on their Christmas tree.

Dad. 

In the snowy driveway of their house in Lawrence, on Christmas morning, teaching Dean how to catch a softball with his shiny new glove until his fingers were nearly frozen from the cold.

Dad.

Years later, unexpectedly making it back from a hunt in time, stepping into their motel room with boxes of take-out food - the good kind that smelled of mashed potatoes and gravy and pie. Sometimes, he brought presents - a new knife for Dean, a book for Sammy. Sometimes, he even brought toys.

Sammy.

He will never forget the night his brother gave him the amulet - originally meant for Dad, but it ended up being the most precious gift Dean had ever been given. To this day, without its familiar weight around his neck, he felt naked and incomplete.

“Well, if you want more beer, you’ll have to go and buy some,” Sam explains into his thoughts. “And good luck finding a store that’s open tonight!”

Right. Ypsilanti, Michigan, is not exactly a major city, and business is likely to close up shop for the holidays. 

Dean groans. “Dammit. I'll find one. There’s got to be a Gas’n Sip somewhere, at least.”

“Bring some food while you’re at it,” Sam suggests. “That Chinese stuff in the fridge smells like feet, and I’m not ending this year with food poisoning.”

Sighing, Dean shrugs into his jacket and digs for the car keys. Finding a place that’ll sell more than microwaved pizza rolls tonight won’t be easy. But it’s Christmas, and even if Sam's doing his best to ignore that fact, Dean’s going to try and find him a decent meal. It’s what he did when they were kids, and he’s not going to stop now, while he’s still around.

“Hey Dean, maybe gas up the Impala, too? It’s running on fumes.” 

Offended, Dean scowls at Sam. “What are you talking about? Her tank’s almost half full!”  He takes care of his car, and - unless they’re entirely broke - he never lets her run low on fuel. Hunter’s rule: always keep the runaway car in good shape. Dean lives by that law. Especially since Dad died and passed Baby on to him. 

Sam blinks innocently. “Is it? Still. Just to be on the safe side.”

Dean frowns. Something’s up with his brother. He can’t put a finger on it, but something is off.

“What’s going on with you?”

“Huh?” Sam runs his good hand through his hair. It’s getting way too long. “What do you mean?”

Dean circles a flat palm at him, gesturing. “You’re being weird.”

“I’m not.” Injured finger sticking out, Sam puts his hands on his hips.

��Yeah you are,” Dean says. “You’re giving me stuff to do, doing what you can to send me away, as if-”

He stops, realization suddenly dawning. It’s Christmas Eve. His very last Christmas. And while Dean would like nothing more than to make it count, Sam wants the opposite. He wants Dean away because he can’t bear the thought that this will be the final time. 

“As if what?” Sam inquires.

Heart in his throat, Dean looks around the room, not at Sam. Then he waves him off. “Nothin’. I’ll be quick. Ice that bump on your head! You may have a concussion the way you’re acting.”

He doesn’t have one. Otherwise, Dean wouldn’t leave him alone. But it’s the best he can come up with, and Sam seems to accept it. At least, he doesn’t come back with any kind of retort and lets Dean walk out the door. 

Outside, the air has gone crisp, and the puddles in the parking lot are turning to ice. Dean wonders if they’ll have snow tonight.

Inside the motel room, Sam turns off the ceiling light and sneaks up to the window to peer through the curtain. He can see Dean crossing the parking lot, huddled into his too-thin jacket, the paved ground starting to glitter. When Sam hears the familiar rumble of the Impala, he waits until it recedes into the distance before throwing on his own jacket and going outside.

Scanning the assortment of cars in the lot, he spots an older Honda parked in a puddle of shadows where the scantily placed streetlamps don’t reach. Even with his injured hand, it’s a matter of seconds until he’s picked the Honda’s lock and another minute until he’s hot-wired it and eases out of the motel compound as inconspicuously as possible.

Taking a left turn, he aims for a gas station he saw a couple of miles away the day before. He’d seen a 24/7 sign and a small stall selling Christmas trees - the crooked left-overs no one had wanted to buy. Hopefully, some will be left. Hopefully, the stall’s still open. For Dean, he’s going to pick the best one he can find.

Carlos’s lips curve into a small responding smile and he shakes his head. “It’s okay.”

Fresh out of rehab for drug and alcohol addiction, lead singer TK and his band Stranded are pushed into a tour he's not sure he's ready for. To combat the bad press from his very public hitting of rock bottom, his label suggests they take up-and-coming country singer Carlos along with them. Between TK's still healing wounds and closeted Carlos's fears that his parents don't support his musical career, a rocky start might turn into finding exactly what they both need.

Jensen: I do love- I do love “Mystery Spot,” because it was such a fun episode for me. Because I just didn’t care. (audience chuckles) ‘Cause I was just dying all the time. Fan: Hi, guys. (Jensen: Hi.) (?It’s been real?). How’re you doing? (Jared: Hi.) Um, question for both of you guys. Um, do you ever do your own fight scenes? And, if so what kind of preparation.. or training.. do you have?

Jensen: Yes and none. (audience laughs and oo’s. Jared laughs.)

Jared: I think (looks at Jensen) we do all of our own fight scenes but they’re also (looks at fan) by.. stunt.. uh, actors who.. do the more intense.. part of the fight scene.

Jensen: You know, like- like, when you see one of us, you know, flying into a bookshelf, or, (Jared: [nods] Yep.) you know, crash into a table (?or something?) (Jared: [nods and points to himself] (?that’s me?).), (nods and points to himself) that’s me. (audience yeah’s and laughs. Jared laugh) Umm.

No. They- they don’t- they don’t nes- they don’t even allow us to do it, just for insurance purposes. So, that’s when the stunt guys come on. And that’s why I say, you know, (looks at Jared and gestures to them both) we basically run, jump, and fall down. And those guys do the actual stunts.

Uhh, a lot of the hand to hand- hand to hand combat stuff is- is.. that’s us. And, you know, we’ll go over it that morning or the day before.. (Jared: Right.) and just kind of get a feel for it. And, you know.. we do that pretty quick.

Jared: (to fan) In some of the fight scenes we have some preparation. The first one that was he against I in “Skin” (Jensen: I loathed.) in season seven- (looks briefly at Jensen) Yeah, we had to- We came out on the weekends and we trained with this, uhm.. (looks at Jensen) uh…

Jensen: Well, no. The first one (points to Jared) would’ve been the “Pilot” when we first (gestures) see each other.

Jared: (nods) The first one was the “Pilot” and- (nods) Yeah, that’s right. The “Pilot” one we had loads of fight training. (Jensen: Tons.) (counts on his fingers) And then, the one we fought each other again, we also had loads of fight training.

But, since then it’s more- Since we have the basics, you sort of block it out (Jensen nods) and then you kind of rough it in. And you do it kind of half speed. And then the stunt guys get in and (swipes hand) tear the place up.

Jensen: You know, the more you do- uh, and, we’ve done it a lot. So, the- the more you do it kind of the easier it becomes every time there is a fight scene. So, it’s like.. preparation becomes less and less and less. (shrugs) But you can still get the performance out of it.

Jared: I’m just saying, I don’t know. It could (flings hand up) probably kill demons. Or unalive demons. (Jensen: prob- probably.) I think that’s a (flings hand up) cooler weapon than a knife. (Jensen: Yeah.) The eyes (shrugs and stares out) and then dead.

Fan: Um, one of my, uh.. favorite season trailer episodes is, um, “Born Under a Bad Sign.” (Jared: Yeah?) And I wanted to know what was your favorite scene to shoot in that episode?

Jared: Uhhh, that’s a great question. My favorite scene to shoot in that episode... was... the getting exorcised scene. It was fun because.. I was tied up, so I didn’t have to move around. And it was fun because then I got to do that demon thing, where I.. was like, “Ah, you think you’re cool with the.. Devil’s Trap,” and I made the ceiling crack? That’s like- (turns to Jensen, nodding and flings his hand up) See, I like the eye thing. (?I knew I like that thing?).

Jensen shrugs. The audience laughs. Jared turns back around while Jensen wide eye stares away from him and then rolls his eyes. The audience laughs louder.

Jared: Um, it’s fun-

Jared slowly turns back to look at Jensen, but Jensen looks away. Jared turns back, but quickly looks back at Jensen and Jensen looks back and pumps his eyebrows, smirking. Jared turns back to the fan and laughs. Jensen chuckles to himself.

Jared: (shrugs) Well, big for you.

The audience laughs and oo’s. Jared laughs. Jensen rolls his eyes and nods. Jared turns back to look at Jensen. Jensen possibly says something, maybe “yeah,” off mic or just makes a face while chewing gum, but Jared laughs harder because it. Jensen also starts laughing.

Jensen: Uumm, (Fan: And my second ques-) Now on to the important question, yes. (audience and Jared laugh)

Fan: Yes. Um, okay, my second question for Jen, um- (Jared: Filler questions.) it’s for Jensen. Um, my other favorite season episode is “What is and What Should Never Be.” And I wanted to know what was your favorite scene to shoot that episode?

Jensen: Uumm, (lip trills) there were a couple. Uhhh, I really like the- the-uhh, when Mom opened the door. (audience aw’s) And, um, just being- (throws up hand and tilts his head back and forth at the audience) (audience laughs) (to fan) Uh, (Jared: Dirty minds.) it-it was just really hard to play, you know? It just like it w-was a lot of conflicting.. feelings and-and that- that I had to- to-to do without.. (gestures to and from his head) saying really anything.

Um, I also really like the scene (points at Jared) between he and I, uh, in the.. the dinning room. Because it was the first time sss- It was really the first time ever.. that.. I’ve had to do a scene with him.. (points at Jared) and he wasn’t.. who he normally is. (Jared: Right.) Uhm, (?Fan?: Mhmm.) all the (moves his hand back and forth), you know, the quick banter and the, you know, just the- the energy that I wo-ub, you know, we normally like have in the scene was completely gone because (points at Jared) he couldn’t react normally (points to himself) to me because I was the brother that, you know, was a, um- a mess up and, uh, you know, just a load of crap.

And- and he didn’t really care about.. me, in that scene. And so... to play against someone who I’m so used to having a certain dynamic with and having him not giving me (hand swipe) anything back was really, (wide eyes and flings hand up) really interesting to me.

Jared: That was. That was hard to do. I remember we were both-

Jensen: (points to Jared) You- you were- ee- I mean, (nods) it was difficult.

Jared: (?losing my mind?) because I wanted- Kripke to had to keep on with me in that scene in the dining room when he pulls me aside. I kept on having- I kept on clicking back to the (thumbs to Jensen) rapport that we usually have on screen, which is that brother-brother thing. But, Kripke’s like, “No!” We kept going back to, you know, you know and love Dean. (Jensen: Normal world, right? [nods] Yeah.) This is somebody you don’t know. And he’s like, “You don’t hate the guy. You just don’t know him. He.. up and left and he’s kind of a.. loser. He doesn’t do much. And you just never known the guy.”

And so, that was so hard. And that was like, “I don’t know if I could do that.” (Jensen nods) It was so tough. It was kind of sad. How sad is it that, I watch that episode and I’m like, “Aw, how sad. He has a normal life.” (audience and Jensen laugh) (?Did everybody call that?).

Jensen: (shrugs) Well, you know.

Jared: That’s a- that’s…

Jensen: So- (gestures to fan) Yes.

Fan: I was gonna ask you to demonstrate. So, you would give us a little (?flavor of him?).

Jensen: A body swap with, uh, (points to Jared) (Fan: Yeah.) Jumbo, here? (Fan: Yes.) (audience and Jared laugh) (points to Jared) You want me to imitate him? (Jared: [off mic] Oh!) (Fan: Yes, please.) (gets up and shakes his head to the audience) Gladly. (Jared laughs. The audience screams and laughs) It would be something.. something about like this.

◘LA Supernatural Con: Jensen doing his Sam impression by wfsarah◘

Jensen puts his mic down on his seat and then steps away from his chair. He hunches over and places both hands in his pockets. He looks up squinting with pursed lips and begins to walk forward looking around. The audience laughs. Jared throws himself forward laughing. Jensen’s steps get more and more exaggerated as he walks off the front right corner of the stage onto the autograph tables. Jared throws his head back and laughs.

Jensen turns around to face the crowd with his shoulder line to his ears before he starts his walk back to his seat. Audience members scream. Jared and the audience laugh. Jensen begins to violently nodding before he reaches his seat. Jared is wiping tears from his eyes and then holds his hands out and shakes his head. Jensen turns around, scratches his nose, bows to the audience, and then sits down smirking. The audience claps and cheers. Jared claps his mic, nodding and says “Alright. Alright,” off mic, then laughs some more.

Fan: Thanks for that, but I do have a small question for Jared.

Jared: (?Do, we?) (laughs)

Fan: Um, someone asked earlier if Jensen would be doing anymore plays on stage. Any ideas for you to do any?

Jared: Uh, me? (Fan: Yeah.) (thumbs to Jensen and laughs) Not if I look like that. (Jensen and the audience laugh) Um.. (laughs) I’d love to. I saw Jensen do that play. He-he.. kicked ass. (audience yeah and woo) And, uh, it was exciting (?to see him? or ?and for him?). (audience cheers and claps)

(gestures to audience) And, I don’t know if any of y’all guys got a chance see it, but I know we had people who seen it before. But, it’s really exciting and I was sitting there watching and my heart was beating so fast. I was like, “Dude, he doesn’t get any second takes.” Like, it hit me hard. (Jensen nods) Because, I did plays in high school and stuff, but this is in front of.. major paying audience. It’s a huge.. theatre, you know? Housing some big.. names.

Uhm, so I’d love to do it, but h-h-hopefully, um.. my career keeps going this way and I-I- I keep on.. working and establishing.. enough of a name for myself in this business, so I can.. afford to do a play (Jensen nods) in, you know, however- (squints and flips up his hand) Does that make any sense? (Jensen: No.) (Fan: Yes.) (audience laughs) (turns away nodding) No, okay. (turns back) (?Jerk?)

Fan: So, no (?Equus?) in the.. near future?

Jared: Not in the near future. I’d love to do a play at some point in time. (nods) But, I can’t foresee (gestures) in the near future.. given the chance to. (nods)

Fan: Well, thank you, and thank you for doing everything you do. I love the show.

Jared: (claps leg) Thank you.

Jensen: Thank you. (Jared and audience clap) (turns to his right)

Jared: Hello.

Jensen: (turns to his left) Next.

Fan: (?still have one?), uh, for Jensen. (audiences oo’s and laughs) Do you know- I-I asked you-

Jared: What was- Who was your question to?

Fan: Uh, what?

Jared: Uh, the stolen one.

Jared: (scrunches his face) Stupid questions.

Fan: Uh-

Jensen: What was your brilliant question? (Jared and audience chuckle)

Fan: Um.. Do you plan on wearing, uh, a kilt anytime soon? (Jared laughs, then nods. Audience laugh and claps) It really is.. awesome.

Jensen: (to audience) Let me rephrase that. (to fan) What’s your odd question? (audience and Jared laugh) (Fan: (?it’s my favorite?).)

Umm, (to audience) I- As some of you may know I wore, uh, a kilt in, uh-uh-uh, “10 Inch Hero.” (audience woo’s and claps. Jared nods) And.. (holds a hand up) Which was part of the character. (audience laughs. Jared looks down and smiles) It’s not something I do on a day to day basis. (audience and Jared chuckle)

Umm, (to fan) my answer would probably be no. (audience and Jared laugh.) Uh, unless, you know.. (shrugs, shaking his head, then looks at Jared) unless it’s Halloween, you know what I mean? (Jared: [nods] [off mic] Yeah.) Yeah, okay. (turns to his left then back to fan and shrugs)

Fan: (?Yeah, okay.?) Thank you.

Jensen: Sorry, (flings hand up) I didn’t have a more interesting answer for you. Like, “I’m wearing one right now, underneath.” (audience laughs. Jared smiles) “I just took it off.” (Jared says something off mic) Yeah. (laughs) “I just changed. It’s what I sleep in.”

The audience and Jared laugh. An audience member lets out a loud woo. The audience laughs. Jensen had turned to his left, but then slowly gives a face to the audience. The audience laughs harder.

Fan: Uhm, I actually have two questions and Jared can have the second one. So it’s.. (audience oo’s, aw’s and laughs. Jensen bobs his head and smirks) Sorry, Jared.

Jensen: Yes. (Jared is looking down, sad-frowning)

Fan: We didn’t have enough time to finish our questions with Jensen, so you’re finishing us up.

Jensen: (to Jared) Yeah. (nods) (?Just saying, man?).

Jared: Alright, fine.

Fan: Alright, um, so, you just had the opportunity to act on stage and you’ve done film and television before. What’s your favorite medium and why?

Jensen: Umm, (lip trill) ..I’d have to say that, uhh, of all the jobs I’ve had probably the, like- I’d say my favorite.. would have to be (Jared: Days of Our Lives.) (audience laughs) half hour- (laughs)

Jared: (?Sell out?), but Days of Our Lives.

Jensen: Would have to be half- a half hour sitcom. Uh, I did- I did a show. It’s like the first thing that I did when I moved to LA. It was, uh, a show called, “Mr. Rhodes.” And it was a half-hour sitcom on ABC.

But, the great thing is.. you-you rehearse all week.. and then you preform in front of a live audience. So, it’s basically the best of both worlds. You get TV and you get, you know, uh, theatre. Um, so you get that-that kind of immediate, uh, gratification from an audience, but you also have the ability to go back and redo it if it messes up.

So, um.. I- And (to Jared) the schedule just unbelievable. (Jared: Yeah.) I mean, (to fan) you work for three weeks and get a week off every month, are you kidding me? (audience laughs) I- (shakes head) I just, (to Jared) you know, those “Friends” people had it made. (audience laughs) (to fan) So.

Fan: And then, my second question, which Jared can answer, because it was for both of you.

Jared: Okay, I’ll answer it. (audience laughs)

Fan: Um, (Jared: If I must.) how difficult is it to imagine Special Effects like the black smoke? What kind of, um, eyeline match do you have?

Jensen: I’m glad you asked. Um, (Jared and audience laugh) (laughs)

Jared: I’ll- (bumps Jensen’s arm) go ahead and take this one. (Jensen: [nods] Alright.) It- it started out pretty tough, ‘cause you- you’re lookin’ at tape and, you know, I mean, pieces of tape, like x-marks on the box. And they’re going, “It’s a-“ you know, “It’s a demon on fire and smoke.” And you’re going, “Ahh.” You know? (audience laughs) Like, you don’t know what to do. 

But, there’s been a learning curve (Jensen nods) of.. filming it and remembering how you feel in the scene on screen-

Fan: Is it like following it across- Do they like have like a pole? Do they have something-

Jared: Sometimes. (Jensen nods) Every now and again they’ll have, um, a-a tennis ball at the end of a pole. Uhm, and they’ll sort of run it around. Otherwise, uhm.. you know, you’ll- your eyes will be here (gestures off to his left) then they’ll have, “Okay,” it goes to the next part and you’ll have to look at the next part.

Uhm.. but a lot of times luckily.. they’ll.. have us.. sync it up. You know? Because we get- we get a chance to do it (cycle gesture) over and over and over again. So, I think rarely we probably get it right the first time. But, we can just do just a series of, like, you start there. Go to the next one. Go all the way there and back, you know?

Jensen: (to fan) It’s a lot- You got a lot of different factors that kind of, uh, that come into it as well, you know? Uh, in the episode, “My Time of Dying” where I run in and I see like, the- the grim reaper, like, hanging over the- the hospital bed. That was actually just an electrician with a pole and (mimics bowl) a-a bowl at the end of it, um, as an eyeline. But, they needed something- (*missing coverage)

Fan: Um, I was just wondering if the Funyuns and, like, the Zagnut candy bars if those were written into the script or were those stuff that you guys liked, and so that’s why they got them or?

Jensen: (to Jared) They were written into the script, weren’t they?

Jared: Yeah, (Jensen: [nods] Yeah.) I never had a Zagnuts. I-I love Funyuns. (audience laughs)

Jensen: Yeah. (nods to fan) They-they- that’s a- that was a writing- a writing call. (Fan: Thanks.) Yeah.

Jared: Also they- once again, there are many factors like.. you can’t just- uh, they must also have some sort of deal or Funyuns says (?)-

Jensen: Got to get (?airline nuts?).

Fan: Yeah.

Jared: You can’t just throw Coca-Cola and Reese’s pieces and stuff and go like, “Okay, look, here’s your M&M’s.” And M&M’s is going, “Uh, we didn’t tell you, you could use our M&M’s.” So, I guess they went out to Funyuns and had to get approve and stuff like that.

Jensen: Well, they- they write what-

Jared: It’s probably a personal favorite of mine.

Jensen: They write what they want and then they see if they can get that. And if it’s just, you know, the- uh, if it’s too difficult then they might change it to something else. But, I can’t imagine Funyuns and, uh, were too hard to get, yeah. (shrugs) So. (pumps eyebrows at audience) (audience laughs)

Jared: It’s probably like, whoever wrote it probably really loves it, you know? It’s like all the characters really have a different, uhm- in different small (?towns?), like, you know, uhhh- Who was- What was the name of- in Croatoan, um.. Bargus or something like that. It was like someone’s best friend (Jensen nods) or the writer’s best friend and they used their, you know. So.

Jensen: Yeah. All the names- (Jared: Yeah, are all-) are all-

Jared: Like, that was my first grade teacher, you know? (Jensen nods) So.

Jensen: Yeah.

Fan: Okay, but then on that note, do you have a favorite- What’s your favorite snack food or junk food to eat just whenever?

Jensen: (points at Jared) Anything with sugar. (audience laughs)

Jensen: Um. (looks at Jared and chews his gum and starts the jingle) Dun, Dah, Dah, Dah, Dah, Honey, Honey. (audience laughs) (exhales) (?Oh boy?).

Jensen: Uhm, (shrugs and flips his hand up) I don’t know. Whatever’s available is fine. Because I’m hungry, you know. Yeah. (Fan: Thank you.) Beef Jerky, ehh, you know? Sugar. (audience giggles) Doughnuts. (shrugs looks to his left then goes back and shrugs again) or whatever. We’re not picky.

Jared: (off mic) (?Okay,?) thank you, (?um-?)

Jensen: (turns to his left) Hi.

◘Jensen and Jared in LA: Jensen on playing Dean by BabyBlueSteel◘

Fan: Hello, boys! (chuckle) (Jensen: Hi.) I’m ap-apologizing to Jared now because I already asked him these questions. (Jensen looks at Jared) So, I’m asking Jar- Jensen first. (audience giggles) But then I have a question for both of you to make up for it.

Jared: (sighs) I’m (?okay, he can go first?). It’s what he does.

Fan: So, um, this is about getting into character of Dean. Is there a certain facet of Dean’s personality that’s hardest for you to portray on screen? And on top of that, is there a certain side of Dean that’s your most favorite to play?

Jensen: Uhh, I’d say the most difficult is just his affection towards his brother. (Jared laughs. audience laughs, oo’s, and aw’s) (shakes head) (Jared pouts) I struggle with it daily. (audience laughs and aws. Jared laughs) (smiles) Uh, no. 

It- um.. I don’t know. I mean, when- when you- when you play a character, uh, as- as much and as intensely as-as we do it-it-it becomes very, euh.. natural, um, to.. you know, feel or know what- how he would react or what he might do in a certain situation. (Jared nods)

Um, you know, the emotional stuff is always tough. And that’s tough for both- Uh, (Jared waves at the audience) (turns to Jared) (Jared nods to Jensen) I-I don’t know. (to fan) I think that’s tough for playing any character. Uhm, to-to, you know, figure out-

I do know that it is easier now, um, I think I touched on this before, for, eh-eh-I think (gestures to Jared and himself) both of us to-to get into a kind of emotional, uh, state.. in the scene than it used to be before we, you know, knew each other that well. (Jared: [nods] [off mic] Right.)

You know, now- I mean, back then you had to like (points to his head) think about something that would really get you worked up. But, know it’s like, you know, we know these characters so well, and we, you know, we know each other so well that we can just use each other to-to- to get, you know- to get where we need to be. So.

Um, you know, I-I- I don’t know. I think the- the part that I like the most is- is just his, uh- um, when he gets snappy and sarcastic and cranky. (audience giggles) That’s always fun for me to play. (smirks) Because then I don’t have to be in real life.

◘Jensen and Jared in LA: directing ambitions? by BabyBlueSteel◘

Fan: And, um, have either of you ever thought of maybe trying out, you know, directing an episode or helping to direct an episode or directing, you know, something that you guys enjoy or look forward to maybe doing in the future?

Jensen: (looks at Jared then back at fan) Um, it’s something I’m- I’m interested in. Um, Iii- I know that it’s, uh, you know- It’s- it’s very difficult for.. (smacks lips) our show specifically (Jared: [nods] [off mic] yeah.) to allow one of us to direct an episode. Simply because they can’t lighten our, um- you know, our load. As- as far as the ac- the acting work goes.

Um, you know, you have, uh, you know, like, uh, I’m going to use “Smallville” as an example, because Tom’s a friend of ours. And-and he’s directed a few episodes and.. it’s much easier for him because he’s got cast of, you know, nine or ten. (Jared: [nods] [off mic] Yeah.) So, they can write heavy.. other characters and lighten his load the- the previous shows so that he can prep for the next episode. And then lighten his load on the-the episode that he’s directing, so that he can concentrate on directing.

(shakes head) It’s just.. not- it’s just not that doable for our show. So, um- You know, is it- is it doable at all? I-I- probably, ‘cause you know. Will it happen? (shrugs) Depends. Depends on if the writers are willing to, you know.. go the extra mile and make it- you know, make it feasible for us. (nods)

Fan: Good. (Jared: [off mic] Yeah.) Okay. (Jensen: Yeah.) Thank you very much.

Jensen: (nods) Yeah.

Jared: Thank you. (Jensen turns to his right.)

Fan: Hi, Guys.

Jensen: Hi.

Jared: Hello.

Fan: In “Tall Tales,” when Bobby first comes and you guys were recounting your views of each other at the.. bar. Did you guys enjoy playing kind of, like, extreme.. (Jared: I hadn’t been.) caricatures (audience giggles) of yourself? Like, you were.. really nerdy. And (Jared: Yeah.) his.. was hitting on girls.

◘Jensen and Jared in LA: Dean talking with himself in DALDOM by BabyBlueSteel◘

Jared: (nods) I loved it. I thought it was (?good, because-?)

Jensen: I did too. (audience and Jared laugh)

Jared: Yeah, I thought it was fun. I knew it was gonna be.. um, really funny sequence, because reading the script I was laughing out loud. You know, lot of times when I read the script I’ll kind of go, “huh,” you know? (Jensen smiles) Or, “Oh, that’s going to be funny.”

But, I was reading the script and just laughing. I was like, “Man, even I can’t mess this up.” (chuckles) (audience laughs) Because I was, “Alright, let’s go at it.” It was- It was a- it was a lot of fun. (turns to Jensen) (Jensen nods)

(to fan) The whole episode was a lot of fun, you know? We like those. We really enjoy the- um, we do. (slight turn to Jensen and flips hand) I know I do and I know (thumbs to Jensen) he does enjoy the kind of lighter moments of Supernatural. I mean, it can be so dark and so ominous so often that it’s fun to.. get a scare but also get a laugh, you know? (nods) (Jensen nods)

Fan: Yeah, then I have a quick question for Jensen.

Jared: mhm. (nods then snorts and then leans back) (audience giggles)

Fan: Um, in- I forgot the name of the episode. W-Where you guys went through the- uh, like, Bobby’s dream, like the (?living room?)- (Jared: Dream a Little Dream?) (Jensen gestures to the audience. Audience answers “Dream a Little Dream”) “Dream a Little Dream,” yes. (audience laughs. Jensen smirks.)

Um, what was it like yelling at yourself? Like, you enjoy- like, did you enjoy that (?acid trip?)-

Jensen: That was a really, really hard scene, umm, I’m being serious. That-the-the- the director, uh, I love to death, his name is Steve Boyum. Um.. you know, he had- he had somethings in mind they wanted to do during that scene. And, um, you know, when you’re dealing with a television schedule sometimes it doesn’t always allow for the (hand quote) artistic shot to be done, because you got to get your basics. I mean, you gotta, you know, essentially cover your ass otherwise your-your- your gonna, you know? The network is gonna come down on you.

So, ee- doing that, you know, I had to play, um, I had to play one side of the scene.. uuhhm, a certain way and (shakes his head and slaps his leg) (to Jared) God bless him, I can’t remember his name, but the-the- (to fan) the guy who stood in for me (Jared nods) on the other end, um, knew all of my lines, (Jared shakes his head) backwards and forwards. And I was so impressed with him. Um, and (scratches his head) I’m killing myself to think of his name.

Jared: (?It was a big scene?). It looked like a five or six (Jensen: [nods] Yeah.) (?scene was it?)?

Jensen: And, you know- But at the same time I couldn’t tell him how I wanted to play the scene. I couldn’t be like, “Listen, act just like me.” (audience laughs) So, I had to remember in my head how I was going to be delivering those lines to me and then react off of the way how I was thinking about those lines- (closes his eyes and shakes his head, holding his hand up) It was very confusing and it was very difficult. And it was very challenging, so, you know, at the end of the day I was like, “Phew, mark that off the list.”

But, uh- and then I think the most difficult thing was the, uh-um- I had to.. get into the demon- Like when I get shot, and the blood all over my face and put the- the eyes in and- (shakes head) and I gave that weird voice, which I don’t know where that came from. (audience laughs. Jared snorts) Um. And then I had to get all cleaned up and go back into the scene and do another take of, (Jared: Oh god.) like, only because- because he wanted- he had time to get that kind of (hand quote) cool double cut shot.

And so, by then I was just like, “Steve? This better be the most un- This better win you an Emmy.” (audience laughs then claps. Jared smiles) (shakes his head then nods) Yeah. Thank you. (turns to his right)

Jared: Ah.

Jensen: Hey, hey. (?Big D?).

Fan: Um, she took my question. I was gonna ask Jensen what it was like to act with a Jensen Ackles guy, but (Jared and audience laugh. Jensen nods his head) she stole my questions.

Jensen: And of course you have a backup question?

Fan: No, I don’t.

Jensen: Fantastic. (Fan: But-) Thanks for coming up. (Fan: No.) (audience laughs) (laughs)

Fan: I’m a smart one. Um, inn “Dream a Little Dream” (Jensen: Yeah.) Dean has to.. go into his dream and he looks at the character Lisa, who he liked, um, who thought Ben was his kid. (Jensen: mhm, mhm.) Um.. what do you think about Dean’s longing to have that family?

Jensen: Umm.. (smacks lips) You know, I-I think it’s- it’s written in the d-that- it’s something that he longs for, you know? It’s-it’s- I think that, you know, you saw obviously first.. season, uumm, his drive.. and his intent on having that family.. reunited. You know, (gestures to Jared) getting him, finding Dad, and having everybody together and how much that meant to him.

So, you know, it’s something that he never had. And he sees it and I-I think that there’s envy there, but at the same time I think that he knows that he could never- (shakes head) He could never settle into something like that. He’s seen too much and done t-so much that it just- it’s kind of irreversible.

Um, so, it’s-it’s more of a.. longing sadness than something that he really yearns for. (nods) Yeah. (Fan: And-) (to Jared nodding) That’s a pretty good answer wasn’t it? (audience laughs)

Jared: Pretty good. I’m (?fucked?). (?I’m like-?)

Jensen: I might- I might write that down. (Jared laughs)

He had a time finding how to act without Dean, because they really are a double act. He commented on the bullet scene, poking around the fake chest prosthetic and pretending to sew it up, and the fake skin was peeling around the edges and it looked really gross. Jared stands, clapping. Jared finishes first and then moves to the left one and starts jumping to try and reach closer to his printed face, making the crowd laugh. Jared settles for signing above Fred’s face and Jensen sided to the other side underneath Dean’s face. The boys hand back the sharpies to the creation employee and then start their walk off stage.

Favorite Character: TK

Character you relate to the most: Carlos. Especially his relationship with his father.

Favorite Episode: 3x08 'In the Unlikely Event of an Emergency.' However, 'Red vs. Blue,' 'Roadkill,' 'Bad Call,' and 'Push' are also up there.

Hottest take: The Texas Ranger storyline was terrible. The investigation itself was boring, and the case scenes felt disjointed and made little sense. The emotional aftermath was cathartic, but the case itself was lacking. It also really bothered me to hear Carlos say, 'You helped make it right for Julio,' to Wyatt (or something along those lines). I find it perplexing that the writers felt the need to frame a man being shot dead by Sam as "justice". Overall, it was a messy storyline.

Favorite OG 911 Character: I haven't watched the original series, but among the characters from the OG series that appeared on Lone Star, I'm going to say Marvin.

Favorite Ship: Tarlos, but also Paul/Marjan, their friendship is the best.

Most Underrated Character: Pearce. I love him; he's such an asshole sometimes, but he brings something different. Also, he's probably the most sane person at times.

Underrated Ship: Billy/Owen. Listen... The two of them being romantically involved? I can envision it. It's totally possible that they have already been discussed in the fandom and I simply missed it because I'm really new.

One thing you would love to see: Andrea, in any shape or form. Please, give me Andrea Reyes. Also, I know that it won't happen for obvious reasons, but I would've loved to see Detective Carlos Reyes.

March 22nd and all the birthday references in ST

Will's birthday has always been important.

A birthday mug in episode 1

Same mug in Mike's basement. We see it in scenes with El in S1 and Will in S2. Yeah, I think birthdaygate could be about her, too. Will is the only character whose birthday was used to literally save him and the whole town. And we've seen El's birth and birth certificate, but we still don't know when she was born? Strange

The I forgot your birthday card in Will's room in S1

But in S2 we only see it when Joyce looks at the Will the Wise drawing. In all the other shots the card is not there, and the drawing is on another wall. This could be a hint at different timelines (of a timeloop?) More screenshots here

Basically, I have two theories about Will's birthday: either people really forgot it in S4, or the Will who was born on March 22 is the brown-eyed Will in the Missing poster, in the timeline we see in the shed scene, and not the hazel-eyed Will we see in the rest of the show. Maybe they hid the truth in plain sight, they let people believe that his eyes were different because he was possessed. But then in S3 they show that Billy's eye color never changes (here) Can't wait to see what this means

No birthday card in these shots

Lesbianmindflayer found a video posted on the official IG account in August 2017. At the time, they had already filmed S2, they knew there was an important scene about Will's birthday, so why posting the wrong date? Is it actually a mistake, or that's really his birthday in another timeline? We'll see!

The amazing shed scene. One of my favorite! Joyce talks about Will's 8th birthday. That was in 1979, the year of the massacre. She also mentions his rainbowship, a hint at his queerness, but also a reference to the lab. And I think there's a connection to the "rainbow rocket" near Creel House, and the ship of Brenner's father, who was involved with Project Rainbow, and the first man to wind up in Dimension X. This scene is so important!

Will drawing a spaceship could also be a parallel to Olivia Dunham (Fringe), who drew what she saw in another universe. A Zeppelin

3x03. Happy Birthday and '76 on the poster. The lifeguard is talking to El and Max here. My theory about what this could mean and what might have happened in 1976 here

The original title of episode 3x06 was The Birthday. There is no birthday in that episode, but after the intro, the song that plays is Stand up and Meet your brother, and then El meets the Mind Flayer/Vecna (as a lab kid, Henry is kinda her brother), who is possessing a boy named William. A surfer boy.

Episode 3x08, posters of Firestarter and Sixteen Candles. Will is associated with fire, and in Sixteen Candles a girl hopeful thar her 16th birthday is the beginning of a great year, is shocked when her family forgets it because her sister is getting married the next day.

Sixteen Candles and a boy's 16th birthday are also mentioned in S4, and it is likely that S5 is set in 1987, after the time-jump, when Will is 16.

S4. There are so many mentions of birthdays in this season, it's crazy to think that the writers forgot Will's birthday.

Birthday party at Rink-o-mania. I could be wrong, but it looks like a party for two people, to me. And there's a hidden reference to the massacre. The game Asteroids was released in 1979 (here)

When did you first start watching Lone Star? Who or what introduced you to the show?

I started watching the day the pilot episode aired!! I’ve been a huge fan of 9-1-1 since it aired and when I saw they were doing a spin-off with Rob Lowe I was immediately on board!

Marjan!! I want to see everything about her life in Miami and I want a closer look at what life was like for her, Paul and TK when they first got to Austin!! I want to see them exploring ATX, checking out the food trucks and the river walk and the hikes in Zilker park. I want to see them bonding over being new in town . I wanna see Marj and Paul teasing TK over Officer Hottie.

What is a scenario or storyline that you would like to see in season 5?

I want to see TK and Marjan working together on a rescue! I want to see them hanging out after. I want to see some firefam in the engine, I love and miss those scenes so much. I’d love a goofy episode like the jinx from 9-1-1. I’d like to see Carlos and TK facing something together instead of Carlos running off on his own in secrecy.

What do you think is going on in this still?

Paul has taken revenge for Puddinggate™️ and Carlos is plotting his maniacal response.

We all know about the elusive 5x05 spicy scene that has been teased, so what is your prediction for how it could possibly top 1x02?

Tarlos is out at the Reyes family ranch™️ and they go for a horse ride, they get caught in the rain and TK’s horse gets spooked and throws him off. Carlos has to carry TK back to the house, three miles in the rain with his shirt unbuttoned and billowing in the wind. When they get back they make sweet love for 14 hours on a bearskin rug in front of a roaring fire. Fade to black.

Where was the Tarlos honeymoon in your mind?

Cabo! Their parents paid for it as a consolation for not being able to plan the wedding. I wrote a fic about it!

1x10 the Truth — This scene is so so so so personal (the whole episode, really) because of my own experience being hospitalized. And all the emotions! The way they look at each other! AAAAH!

1x17 trust fall — I've tried doing trust falls before and have never been able to do it, so the fact that Jane and Lisbon/Simon and Robin can do it? The TRUST!! But also it's the way he's so upset she doesn't trust him and the way he lowers himself to look her in the eye and she can see it's so important to him that she do the trust fall so she gives in!!

1x19 what are you thinking? — This has always been one of my favorite scenes because they just make eyes at each other for literally 30 seconds???? 30 seconds is a significant amount of time for a show!! And she finally gives in and asks him what he's thinking and 😭

1x23 choosing life — Lisbon telling Jane that people need him, Jane saying he should've been dead so that they could get Red John AND THEN SHOOTING THEIR ONLY LEAD to save Lisbon. All of it. SOOOO important. He chooses life, over and over and over. And he chooses her life, over and over and over.

also I just have to mention them in the rain. they are holding. hands. come ON.

Season Two

2x03 tears — Honestly all of this episode, but it's so heartbreaking the way she's trying to hide it and he notices and you see him soften. Like he's always loving with Lisbon but he becomes so gentle when he sees how upset she is. Also the end scene is so cute ("hush!" and Jane peeking back in 😭)

2x06 prison visit — The "I can just hit you with my chair" "I think you'll find it's bolted to the flooooor" exchange is just so them and I really love it LOL

2x09 tiara — Another scene that is just so them. The way she just ignores him, the way he dresses her up... it's such a sweet little moment.

2x11 dance — Listen. I've danced with people before and I have never wanted to be that close to them. It is so unnecessary how tight she's holding him AND YET!!!! Like she's fully resting on him!! GOD!!!! (Also the Caskett parallel 😭)

2x16 if I were dying... — Okay, I have mixed feelings on the whole situation because yeah, he shouldn't have lied, but the way she's so surprised and touched that he wanted to call her (whereas it's obvious to literally everyone else). I wish he had been able to answer and tell her what he would've said... although it probably wouldn't have been the truth

Season Three

3x01 sheep dip — Everything about this little clip. The way Jane turns the tv on over and over. The way Lisbon gets frustrated with him. The way Jane mimics her. It's just so good and I always laugh when I see it.

3x08 crime scene — When Lisbon makes that comment about "if Jane were here, he'd make some snarky remark." Like... the way they influence each other! The way she knows what he'd be doing! The way you know she's missing him and worried about him! Also Lisbon knowing they're his family.

3x12 IT WAS A RHETORICAL QUESTION — Idk why but this has always been one of my favorites, like her exasperation just makes me laugh so much! But this whole episode is so fun, like when he makes fun of the rhyming/rhythm 😂

3x19 ...she was — I love Lisbon watching Jane's tape. I love that it's something I'd expect Jane to do and not necessarily Lisbon and I love the way it can apply to Lisbon as well... but also the "she was" absolutely destroys me every time.

3x23 bomb — There are lots of moments in this episode I want to mention (the dress!!!! angry little princess!!!!) but I think Jane finding Lisbon is my favorite because it shows how much she trusts him. And I love that she tells him she doesn't need him to come but he eventually needs to check on her 🥺

also I just have to shoutout the pocket rocket introduction because it's just sooooo funny the way he says that right after introducing Rigsby so plainly

Season Four

I've basically decided I'm not stopping at five because season four is one of my favorites lolol

4x01 picking Jane up — I just... I love that Lisbon is waiting for him. I love the way they look at each other. I love that Lisbon is literally injured and still picks him up.

4x09 ice cream — they're so 😭

4x10 saving Jane — This is honestly one of my favorite scenes of the whole series. The way she drops the flashlight and just sprints in (think about how FREEZING she must have been, the water was cold and then after she was wet and it was night), the way she's crying, the way she's saying "please..." and the fact that she's his most important person, the person they ask these questions to... AAAGH (also the way he tugs on her jacket when he asks what her name is in the hospital)

4x10 other scenes — Her calling him Paddy 😭 Sitting by the lake 😭 The hospital scenes and then when she challenges him and says "take a drive with me" (also it literally made me spiral thinking about how many places they drive together because I know how far apart these cities are and like... THEY SPEND SO MUCH TIME TOGETHER)

4x15 in the car — I laugh EVERY. TIME. At how she can't just let them go, she has to get in herself, how she just shoves Jane to the side... I love that scene. I love jealous Lisbon so much (I love jealousy in my characters, it's just so funny...)

4x17 I missed you — ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!!! (also that one tmsource set that is like them after being apart for like... a day)

4x18 tiger — It's just such a cute moment, I can't not mention it.

4x20 pervy perv perv — the way she's called to pick him up, then the way he says pervy perv perv, the way she says that is "profoundly" illegal, and then at the end when he wants to keep it quiet and in the most petty way possible, Lisbon goes, "no." I love this whole episode, it's so funny. I love that she's amused by him joining the play. She's come to just adore all those annoying, pain-in-the-ass things about him <3

4x20 ending — Lisbon is the only one who hears the pain in Jane's voice and she looks up and watches him walk away and I just 😭

4x24 — I'm not even gonna specify for the heading lol this whole episode is insane!! HAND. HOLDING. HAND HOLDING!!!! "Love you." ???? But mainly the church scene. It's so beautiful and also so funny ("I hate you Jane. I HATE YOU." and "okay we are in a church."). When Lisbon says "I have not been sleeping, I've been—" like you can tell how much she cares about him and how worried she is and I love how the rest of the team knows too and are careful about it with her.

Season Five

this has devolved into me not narrowing down... makes me want to go back and add to the other sections... but I won't... lol I truly am trying to keep it to five but some I just have to do more.

5x01 car ride — Okay, I say car ride, but this whole episode I love. I love how jealous Lisbon is. I forgot how mad she is until I went back and rewatched it and it's just... so funny how angry she is. I love her so much, she's so unaware 😭 Also the car conversation. Them dancing around the topic and Jane making fun when she hints at it. GAH

5x02 hospital — it's the way she just automatically goes with Jane. But also them being silly together 😭

5x08 car crash — Lisbon is SO. SOFT. The way you can see how worried she is. The way her voice is so gentle and soft. The way she comforts him. GOD I DIE

5x12 Lisbon's office — The way Jane just automatically sits down and stays with her and helps. The way they know each other so well.

5x13 partners — Another all-time favorite. The way he pulls her in and the way she's so upset and the way he has such a soft spot for her 😭

5x14 poker — I love the way Jane teases her (and that it's Simon and Robin playing). I love these moments of their friendship and all the time they spend together.

5x17 Kansas City — fkjda;fja I just. They're so. I can't. The way Jane smiles at Lisbon as she's singing and how Lisbon forgets herself for a moment. I can't!!!!

5x20 I need you — It's the way he hears it and immediately comes. The way she admits it. How happy and reassured she is when he comes because she knows that she's important, she's his person. (Also I know you love this episode so I don't need to tell you why I think of so many other scenes to include too!)

Season Six

6x02 cleaning Lisbon's face — I mean, the whole thing, but the way he just runs out and is shouting that he needs water, that's the most important thing, and then he cleans up her face... knowing what that must have been like for him... fjdajf;a my heart is exploding.

6x06 saying goodbye — This one's pretty self-explanatory. It's painful but also so important.

6x07 in the hospital — Her saying she wants to stay with Jane 😭 The fact that she would never be anywhere else. GAH

6x08 phone call — Again, all of the episode, but especially the phone call. I love that she has the recording, I love that all he wants is to talk to her (if I were dying I'd want to call you...) and I just... gahhhh.

6x09 Jane's letters — It hurts my heart, but it's so important to me. The fact that he writes her all those letters. That she has a special box for them. That she takes it out like a treat and reads it and is comforted by it. Lisbon's life is so clearly lonely in 6x09 and it breaks my heart and I just love her so much... and it truly does not seem like she dates anyone or anything like that in those two years. She reads the letters and holds onto them and she can't send anything back but the fact that he sees so many things to remind him of her... I could go on and on.

6x09 hug — Her voice is soooo soft when she says "I missed you too" and also she's literally smushed into him!!!! The "nice beard" comment!! The way they hold each other so tight!!! GAH!!!!

6x16 blanket — I have such mixed feelings about 6x16... but I love so much of it. I love that she looks at him and smiles and puts the blanket over him.

literally all of Blue Bird, of course.

Season Seven

I'm excluding "White Orchids" because I'm pretty sure it would be my whole top five. And I'm going to try to keep it to five... gaaaah.

7x06 gift — She kept the pieces. She. Kept. The. Pieces. She put it back together. I think she looked at it and held it and maybe even used it when she missed Jane. She held onto it until it was right to give it back to him. His love language is gifts too so you can see it means so much to him. (Also, again, my love language, so I melt)

7x07 — I know it's cheating but... like... all of their scenes. I love that he asks her if she wants him to come and I love that she wants him to come. I love that her first "I love you" is so her. I love that Jane immediately goes to her old room. I love their talk in the trailer.

7x08 come to bed — I mean. As much as I wish we had like ooooone bedroom scene, I love that we see them in bed together multiple times. It's just so sweet and so significant that Jane is in pajamas and in a bed. Ugh. I can't.

7x09 conversation — I love that this is Lisbon's first casual "I love you." I love that she's stroking his arm the whole time. I love how hard it is for him to say what's going on but that he does it anyway. I just love it so much.

7x12 ring — I love that Lisbon asks about the ring because she's the only person who really can ask about it, but then she apologizes later because she realizes she shouldn't have asked about it (which is exactly why she's the one who's allowed to ask). I love how Tork's comment is what makes her apologize, and I love how protective she is. The way she instinctively straightens up when he starts talking, the way she angrily goes after him and says "yeah, the wife and kid." The way it sort of stops her in her tracks when she thinks about what the wedding ring means for Jane. And then I have to just mention the way she says "don't you ever do that to me again ever" after she got so mad at Jane for not wanting to lose her/interfering with her job. The way she interrogates and says "I don't think you understand how important this is to me" and how much you can see Jane has influenced her. How Jane is more important to her. How fiercely she loves him and is afraid of losing him, the way you just see it so plainly.

okay... that was a lot and I know I left out a bunch, but I really did try to keep it to 5 (mostly). Anyway. I look forward to your comments as always! <3 Thanks for letting me cry about them! (also I think I literally spent over an hour writing this fkjdkal;fj;)

very insightful your previous posts from last week that explained the storytelling this season because i couldn't help feeling like there was a missing piece. Which I totally understand the fact that we can't see or have everything on TV. I'm satisfied either way but somehow I just can't help feeling like we could've had something more out of episode 5.

Oh me too I'm genuinely satisfied anyway, because IT'S TARLOS!! aka the best and only love story ever!! and also simply because we have the fandom experience that truly indulges all of our thoughts and what ifs with fics and discussions and headcanons etc.

you know i was actually just thinking of how the choice of the whole therapy thing did not fully sit right with its building blocks because it relied on the time skips to tell us about the problem but over showed trying to solve it in whole 5 minutes of therapy. this didn't really land for me even though i reallyyy enjoyed watching it! like I'd rather just cancel the therapy thing altogether over getting too much of it when the showing of the build up to getting there could've been more cogent in my opinion.

that's why i reimagine how 5x05 would've been more compelling if those opening 5 mins were divided into two scenes where it really shows Carlos being truly absent and letting the case consume him completely, and TK is so supportive and trying hard not to break down under the weight of feeling abandoned.

(excuse the messy thoughts okay) a scene where :

Carlos actually skips their plans for the night altogether, and TK who made plans for them to dine out somewhere because they haven't been able to spend time together lately, brought a gift and is all ready at home texting carlos because if they're late they're gonna miss their reservation and carlos keeps saying he'll leave work soon, TK ultimately gives up, the plans are cancelled and it's not the first time. and he's just sitting there spiraling, doesn't even change his clothes, he's utterly crushed and wants to cry because he's alone and it makes him sick like a kid to be abandoned like that and have it come from carlos, the only person that would never let TK feel that way. but he puts on a brave face when carlos finally gets home, he looks really distressed it worries TK that this is not just guilt over skipping plans again, he greets TK and makes an attempt to apologise before he goes to sit on the edge of the bed, and everything just reflects in the mood of the loft where it's barely lit like usual and the only light in their bedroom is coming from outside, carlos just folds in on himself and cries.. like truly breaks down. letting everything out, all of his pent-up strain and grief and TK rushes towards him and moves into his space and sits in front of him (like their 3x08 and 4x01 parallels) and he immediately starts comforting him in that way where he whispers to carlos his familiar strings of hey, and breathe and it's okay, and carlos' voice is broken, trying to hold back the next sob and having difficult time trying to string words into a coherent sentence

"TK.. I'm stuck. everything feels like a dead end and I don't know what else to do and- I'm sorry I'm not good enough, it's my fault for dragging this for too long because I should've solved the case long time ago but I couldn't and I just don't know- I'm so sorry I-"

"hey hey hey, breathe baby" TK pulls him to his chest then cups his face between his hands, telling him that hey no you're incredible, you're resourceful and capable but it's not easy and it's not supposed to and that's not your fault-

"I'm sorry" carlos immediately cuts him off

because this TK right here, his support, his patience feels jarring because carlos fully expected to come home to TK rightfully lashing out at him for canceling on yet another thing they planed to do together, but no, he's right here holding him and reassuring all his worries and he's so so gentle it triggers all of the guilt of the unspent love and time he should've been putting into their marriage. it drags him down to sincerely apologising and it's one of those moments where he'd call him TK by his actual name because that's when he really wants TK to knowww how he really feels

"Carlos.. it's not the first time where we end up like this, you know that. you lose yourself there for too long, it's like you're letting go of everything else we have, you make me miss you like hell, and I feel like we're already starting to drift apart"

"no please don't say that, I don't want that, I'm done making you feel this way, I'm done wasting the time i get with you, i am so sorry baby I know i haven't really been a good husband-"

"you're an incredible husband okay"

"But I'm not TK, and I'm not trying to do better, and I promise you to do better".........

and carlos begins again by suggesting that TK once told him to join him in the grief counselling meetings and that he'd love to go to one now with him..

like that's the moment in the storyline where carlos makes the promise to do better and then by the end of the episode we see the resolution of it, and we get the confirmation that they went to grief counselling or couples counselling together and it happens over them having ice cream during a night walk after dining out because carlos managed to get a table at that restaurant again, TK filling him in on all the 126 drama he's been missing or something that TK took up that carlos didn't really get to hear about how it's going..

ok so say i *may* be getting into the tarlos fandom courtesy of the overlap between the tarlos and rwrb fandom, what are the *must see* episodes you would suggest that i check out? also pls include that hurt/comfort hospital scene for reasons aaahhhh

I keep saying it but I love the way all of my fandoms are overlapping and colliding so much. I love the way that you say you *may* be getting into the fandom . If my instincts are correct, you're more than halfway there already so there's no point denying it lolol - the last two people who told me that they *might* be getting into the fandom very quickly spiralled to become people who write/make gifs for the fandom 😂 (hi friends, yes I'm calling you out, you know who you are).

I didn't want to mislead you with a list of must see Lone Star eps, so I polled a few friends to make sure that this list was supported by more than one person and I'm pleased to report that there was almost universal support for every ep on this list😅

A list of must-see Tarlos episodes for your consideration, if you don't want to watch every ep:

Season 1: 1x01-1x03 (1x02 is the source of some of *those* gifs), 1x08, 1x10

Season 2: 2x04, 2x08, 2x10-2x12 (2x12 is the source of *those* gifs)

Season 3: 3x01-3x04 (3x04 has the hospital scene you're after), 3x07 (baseball!)-3x08, 3x13 (some suggest 3x11-3x12 are also essential, but if you're trying to minimise, then just 3x13), 3x15, 3x18

Season 4: 4x01-4x04, 4x08, 4x12, 4x15-4x18 (4x16 has that soulmate scene)

If anyone thinks I've missed anything essential, please feel free to let anon know in the comments!

There is also this collection of Carlos Reyes edits (thanks @howtosingit) which has every scene Carlos has been in on the show, which means that it also includes every Tarlos scene (and the all-important brightened proposal scene where we can actually see their beautiful faces). If you choose to watch that way, there will be some important TK scenes that you miss, but I don't know of a resource with just those clips available.
