Are you Nicaraguan?

Yes! Well, I'm a first-generation American, but my family is from Nicaragua.

I've spent several summers visiting my grandparents, aunts, and cousins.

I have a strong love for the country, but the politics hurts me terribly.

I grew up with people not knowing Nicaragua, and any time brought up in class, it's always something negative.

So, having Miss Nicaragua win Miss Universe is amazing. Because we never won anything. And we have something to be proud of. To unite us.

Miss Universe 2023 Sheynnis Palacios' national costume by designer Jorge Salazar was inspired by the great-tailed grackle bird "El Zanate" found only in Nicaragua (Lake Nicaragua and Lake Managua) and Costa Rica (Caño Negro).

It's a medium-sized bird with a long, graduated tail and fairly long black bill and legs and pale yellow eyes.
