I need to talk about Miss Magix (but not the thing you're thinking of)

Of course, S1E12 of Winx Club is mostly remembered for well... the the time this happened.

But also there was one thing that really stuck out to me when I rewatched season 1 recently. I and plenty of others have talked at length about how winx is too centred on it's main character Bloom. But this episode was a rare case especially in the first season where Bloom took the backseat with the episode mostly being focussed on Stella and Lucy. Stella is trying to bunk off from studying a little longer before her exams by being at Miss Magix, she's definitely the least academically in focus of the Winxes so it's in beat for her character, so much so she ends up suffering the consequences for it by failing. Lucy on the other hand goes a little deeper, she's very insecure about her appearance and so when the Trix deceive her into giving her a new look, she signs on instantly, only to be betrayed at the end when they turn things back to normal. This is all alongside the rift between her and Mirta where Lucy wants to be more like the Trix and Mirta is distrustful of them and believes Lucy is blindly walking into some trap of theirs. This rift is also generally underdeveloped and incomplete but that's a story for another time.

Regardless, it's cool to have an episode where Bloom isn't the main focus for once, I can't think of many others in season 1 where she wasn't front and centre stage. It's not a great episode by any means, it's pretty average and even if it's legacy hadn't been knocked down by a certain afro scene I don't think it'd be remembered as anything too special. But I think it's a nice exception to a very frustrating rule.

okay, okay but before we start: I’m gonna mention how the episode might be seen as problematic in the following. However, I don’t think that rainbow had any bad intentions scripting this episode. It’s a filler episode that shows us how mean the Trix are. Point. That’s it. It’s not intended to harm anyone. But I will come to this later.

Bloom: The nine nymphs are sculpted on the facade. The middle nymph is Daphne.

➡ And I will say it again. You don’t get sculpted in the facade of a temple, if you’re only 16 years dead. It has to be longer ago ago.

Icy: You remember Lucy? She asked me if we could help her win the beauty contest.  😈

Yes, I can see why people find this episode problematic. After the waves of body-positivity etc. I can see why. However, this episode has to show us how mean the Trix are. They use Lucy simply for entertaining themselves. They are mean. Yes, and this episode has to show that to us. And I think, the way they diss Lucy is very well written. And I find it mean, what they do. But after all, being mean is their job. I am not a fan of beauty contests at all. They often deliver a wrong image of perfectionism that I don’t share. And again, that is me. Some people might find validation in it. After all, people are all different. However there is a certain beauty standard, that most people share. And one can not deny, that Lucy does not fulfill this one. The intention of her design is being ..ugly. Truth hurts sometimes but it is. If you compare Lucy to her new fake-appereance one has to admit, that most people would prefer the latter. And it IS mean, that Lucy couldn’t win the contest with her real looks. But it’s a beauty contest after all, those stupid contests are superficial af. Again, this episode doesn’t want to show us, haha lucy is ugly, it wants to show us uhhh the trix are mean bitches. The second thing, that is criticized is this scene:

There was a YouTube short recently, that showed this scene and marked it as problematic. Bloom hears a girl crying and looks what happened and than the girl here said, that her hair suddenly puffed up. Now, many people consider this as racism because of how the hair style turning into an afro is described as something bad. HOWEVER, if you search for racism, you will find it anywhere. I, as a little kid, always understood it in a different way. She wasn’t complaining about the look of hair hair but of the consistency.

When Bloom touches it, it is all wobbly. Not like a normal afro should be. So it is the texture of her hair that changed. And yes, the girl said, she had straight her before but it’s her hair getting wobbly which made her upset. I can see how especially for people with afro-like hair see this as a discrimination. And it sucks, but I think that rainbow did not want you to feel bad at all. The scene is risky, yes. It could have been scripted better, yes. But I doubt, that there was any harm intended. 

To sum this up, I don’t like the episode too much. It’s a filler episode and a bit boring too. (But it’s nice to see the trix having fun ngl). And I can see why many people don’t feel well watching it. But we should all keep in mind, that rainbow created this show for little girls. To make them happy, to make them belief in themselves and not to question their style. Winx has so much diversity in it, so that everyone can relate to the characters and I love that. I just hope, I could take the bitterniss a bit out of this episode, if you were offended by it. I just want to remind, that Winx is overall a series of great diversity and positivity that certainly doesn’t want to harm the watchers in any way. Okay, let’s continue the episode:

What makes the episode way more problematic, than it actually is, IS following:

WHAT are Faragonda and Griselda doing there? Isn’t it mostly teachers who should not support these kind of events? And btw, there isn’t much audience there, is it? Maybe Miss Magix is a super odd contest, which nearly no one under 40 is watching in the magical dimension, who knows.  😂

what would have made the episode better too, would have been if the viewer would think, that Lucy’s talent, doing ballet, at least would be real. But the sparks surrounding her suggest, that the Trix also gave her that talent. Which is a pity. It would be cool, if Lucy would excel in ballet.

Yes Bloom, of course there has to be something going on if a person dares not to be immediately nice to you. Omg Bloom, whyy. Stop being such a bratty main character.

ngl I never quite understood, how Stella thought dancing like that is a talent. but hey. It’s kinda nice that they gave her a funny talent like this and not something girly.

It’s also super mean that Stella gets an F for her test later. I mean, she DID something in the test. It wasn’t all good, but her intions were right, weren’t they? Mean of Paladium. a D or an E would have been rough enough imo.

Hi there! First of all, I have the banned episode from this ancient Mondo DVD, since it's been taken down from youtube and other streaming services, even in italian. I will sub this ep regardless of the infamous scene, since I don't think there's anything controversial outside of that

In short, TLDR, in my humble opinion, the scene is racially insensitive and overly meanspirited from the heroines we should root for. The average italian kid didn't think much of it when it aired and re-ran, Italian adults lack the cultural context of black hair outside the country so most didn't understand the complaints and non-white italians did not seem to make any noise about this online. If anybody can prove me wrong is welcome to provide sources that I missed.

There was some disco resurgence in the early 2000s around, in Italy and Japan, so that's what inspired the scene, likely.

Is there a history of discrimination over textured and curly hair in Italy? As far as I know, no. You see white people with dreads and braids all the time and for historical reasons, curly and textured hair is common in people's genes. From what I've seen from italian forums and social media, I have read no complaints from black italians about the scene, so it definitely didn't move the italian black community or anything to stir any controversy.

Alright. With that out of the way... As a kid, I didn't think too much of the scene. I didn't think "wow, that hair is bad/ugly/something mean", or anything of the sort, and this seems to be the general sentiment from other italian watchers. I didn't think anything of the poor black girl being mocked. Being from a filler episode, the scene is rather forgettable to the average euro person.

I thought the hair wasn't even normal afro hair. And so did many others, according to italian social media posts...

I thought it had become JELLO! The hair is shiny and makes a strange noise when Bloom touches it. I'm still sure it's jello.

Bloom touching the hair unprovoked is also kind of nasty.

Some don't believe it's jello at all and I can't fault them for it, since the poor girl doesn't say any details. Just that her straight hair turned into "this thing".

The language used in this scene is meanspirited.

"What did she put on her head?" is a bit too much from Stella. You see a girl crying and you mock her?

The Winx don't even do anything for her, just standing back and watching. The Trix mocking her is one thing, but the Winx could have tried to help, only for them to give up as the girl has a breakdown, I dunno, better than nothing or Bloom's terrible attempt. The whole scene isn't easy to save and I don't think anybody should bother, not even the 4Kids edit improves it much. Just cut it out.

The joke was likely at afro hair looking funny itself, rather than make the black girl seem undesiderable for having an afro, as I've read from some interpretations. All italians I've read and asked agree that they didn't think maliciously of the scene as kids nor now. At least there's that.

A surprising amount of people thought the scene wasn't racist at all though, and couldn't understand why would this be offensive, while those who agreed it was bad still argued that banning the episode was too much.

The italian side has been very focused on the whitewashing discourse, though. Not since Magical Adventure as some have noted, but ever since the fairy couture dropped.

so remember when the specialists had dragons?..

they used to ride them throughout seasons 1-3 and it appearead to be part of their training.

first years at the Red Fountain must be dying for the day their training with the dragons starts. because - dragons!! those mythical, badass, fire-breathing machines of destruction - they are probably so sacred in Magix's culture due to their ties to the Great Dragon!! who wouldn't be excited at the opportunity?

it might even be a rite of passage for the specialists. like, yes - you train, you go on missions, you give your oaths to protect the balance of the universe. but it is once you earn the privilege of riding a dragon - once you bond with them, properly and spiritually - only then, can you call yourself a true Specialist.

even though it is a mandatory part of their education, once you pass the course - you are not required to ride or even guaranteed to have a dragon. you gotta bond with one first, and put in the work of training, taming and flying with the creature regularly. it's a huge commitment, both personal and academic (considered outdated too, now that cosmic ships are a thing) that not everybody is willing to make.

from the boys, Sky and Riven believe in the image of a perfect specialist the hardest. the upholder of good and right, the dragon rider, the knight. both of them so desperately want to be that, to quell their inner voices that tell them they are too rotten at their core. they pursue dragon-riding beyond the mandatory course, and get to keep their dragons upon graduation.

Sky's dragon is small, yet quick as lightning. He lovingly calls her Pearl. Sky hesitates to ride her into battles, instead taking her flying laps around Erendor.

Riven's dragon is a Big Boi, nicknamed Fang. Riven felt connected to that big, hurt tomcat of a dragon immediately - for Fang, it was more of a slow burn lol.

Timmy had a legit allergy on dragons. poor boy barely survived the course and staunchly relegated himself to cosmic ships.

Nabu was never an actual Red Fountain student, so he didn't get to train with dragons - but he is very curious of them and loves to study them from a distance.

Brandon never felt as free as when he was riding a dragon's back. his trainee dragon was named Sunrise - for her golden, shimmering scales and fiery temperament; they loved to fly together. however, he didn't continue the training, since his team already had two dragon riders and he wanted to be practical.

(Brandon misses Sunrise terribly, but she seems to hold a grudge and doesn't grace him with her attention when she visits)

Helia doesn't have a dragon anymore. nevertheless, he visits the dragon barracks and helps take care of them. both Fang and Pearl are very familiar with him - not affectionate, for that privilege is reserved for their riders, but not cold nor threatening either.

he did have a dragon, once. Dream. he was a young dragon - Saladin had raised Dream himself, promising the creature to Helia upon the latter's birth. the Specialist and the dragon's bond was so deep, Dream would often take on Helia's emotions.

Dream died on one of the missions Helia led. the boy was not resting well, training too much and eating too little - he was consumed with the responsibility of being his team's leader, and Saladin's 'prodigal' grandson. Dream took on his worries' as well, growing restless and tired. on that fateful day, the young dragon was not strong enough to stave off the rush of monsters - and was brutally massacred by them, in turn.

Helia dropped out of Red Fountain the next morning and never rode another dragon.

Episode 10 season 2, moment where they're solving the puzzle to get the codex

Well, it's more like favorite moment for all the Trix, i guess, but especially Icy because she says "i love you" to Darcy, then threatens to fucking kill her lmao, DODGES THE ATTACKS, KILLS SKY, and solves the damn puzzle like a queen.

This is what pops in my head when i think of a "favorite Icy moment"

Tho before I rewatched, i'd say that it's season 3 episode 1. Actually, this is still iconic Icy moment and I love it just as much (can't say the same about the rest of season 3...)

Like. First of all, who was that genius that said, hmm yes, let's send ICE witch in the ICE prison, sure nothing can go wrong! Second, Icy is SLAYING. Her line after she frees herself... It still echoes in my head in russian, because that's how i first heard this moment. Then

Just look at her and look at Darcy and Stormy. SHE'S SLAYING AND HAVING FUN.

ALSO I LOVE (and hate) moment from season 2 where she freezes Tecna second before she transforms. I love it because like SLAY, as you SHOULD, BUT I HATE IT BECAUSE IT NEVER HAPPENS AGAIN. Like the winx always have fucking plot armor, and when they don't - this happens.

I actually love every moment of her being unhinged, and every moment of her using too much power for something that doesn't need THIS much effort. Like in episode 2 she was trying to blast the winx and burry them under the snow and like, half of Magix could see the light from it. Girl they are just freshments, you don't need to be so extra. Or in the next episode where she creates the damn iceberg to freeze Bloom (AND SHE MISSED this is funny and not offensive to her character because Bloom just got lucky) OR WHEN SHE FREEZES THE LAKE AND CREATES PILLAR OF ICE AS TALL AS FREAKING CLOUD TOWER IN THE FIGHT WITH BLOOM. Like. Yes. She's so damn powerful and doesn't afraid to show it. (Like Darcy and Stormy were exhausted much faster and they didn't use nearly as much magic as Icy) (season 3 did her dirty and i hate it. >:\) (season 3 lobotomized the trix, fuck this season) WELL EVEN IN SEASON 3 I REMEMBER ONE MOMENT where she was trying to find pixie village and was just FREEZING THE WHOLE FOREST? And when she's like getting mad and her power thickens in the air, like, how FAR can it go??

She's so extra.

OH ALSO.

The second film. Every second of her being on screen. God damn i love this film, let me fill this post with screenshots from it (PLEASE GIVE ME THIS DAMN MOVIE IN 4K 😭😭) (Also WHY DIDN'T THEY KEEP THIS STYLE IN 3D. IF THEY DID I WOULDN'T DROP SEASON 5, I'D EVEN WATCH THE THIRD MOVIE, WHY WHY WHY...) (In the perfect world winx reboot has this style and it slays.)

In russian we have 2 versions of "you" - singular ("ты"), which is used for casual talks like with friends and people you know very well; and plural ("вы"), which can also be used as singular for people you respect or don't know too well (your boss, older people and like that). using "ты" talking to someone older than you or someone you don't know counts as disrespect. So the fact is, in this scene Icy uses "вы" talking to the king. Idk why, i just think it's funny detail. She'll threaten his life and demand something, but with respect ✨✨

i DON'T KNOW WHERE ELSE TO PUT IT IN THE POST, SO I'M SAYING IT HERE! On rewatch i noticed that Icy has the least amount of verbal spells from the main cast (winx+trix). At least it feels tike it. Like, in season 1 i think she literally used only 3 verbal spells in 3rd episode. She's so good that she doesn't need to say her spells out loud most of the time! I'm gonna rewatch everything again, just to count every verbal and non-verbal use of magic by all of them. And then find ratio of verbal to non-verbal spells for each of them.

also side note, i was looking for Icy's spells, but noticed something else. when Bloom transformed, in english Icy says

ONE THING ABOUT HANNI WAS THAT SHE WENT ALL OUT FOR HER BIRTHDAY — STARTING IN THE MORNING. At about 7.50 AM sharp, a strident tune blasted throughout the dorm and made you and Minji flinch awake in the confines of your bedsheets.

Minji groaned, tugging the blanket over her head whilst you pressed the pillow over your face. It hadn't worked because she instantly burst through the doors, dancing her way in and yelling at the top of her lungs of how it was her birthday.

"Get up, you lazy roaches!" She had exclaimed. You and Minji simply sent a similar groan of annoyance to her. Hanni rolled her eyes, the loud bass seemingly shaking the ground more until you felt it in your chest.

One moment, you were on the verge of sleep, and next, you were crying out in shock as a heavy weight had flung onto your back, wriggling like a fish out of water.

"Hanni! I'm going to kill you!" You whined loudly, and it only earned a giggle to taint your tired ears. Clearly, her mind was coloured with anything but seriousness and empathy for your sleep schedule.

She kept complaining about how you can't be tired and that a simple Magix coffee would fix your system. Bearing in mind, you and the girls left for the salon at around 1 pm.

So, Hanni had woken you up even though you should have resided in your bed for a few more hours. 3 hours at most to regain any type of energy that was stolen by her.

Right now, you were sipping on a creamy coffee whilst waiting for Hanni to talk to the receptionist at the salon. It was a pastel pink and beige business with fancy, oval mirrors, hearts clipped onto every corner, and the softest lighting that stretched on to fill the entire room.

It was utterly adorable.

Containing a yawn, you took another swift sip. Minji chuckled at you after easily sipping her iced fruit tea. A watermelon flavour.

"At this rate, you might fall asleep standing," she teased you with a nudge to the side. In retaliation, you nudged her back.

"Shut up. The coffee is doing its job," you remarked. Minji hummed in mock understanding, nodding.

"Of course, by making you yawn more." She raised an eyebrow at you, but you didn't miss the sneaky smile creeping at her lips. Deciding not to entertain her jokes, you stuck a tongue out at her, fueling her giggles.

The treatments varied, but you only desired one thing — sleep. Extra sleep was everything to you, so you chose the hair treatment where they would wash, dry, oil it, and whatever. It was honestly a parade of self-care that Hanni happened to be paying for.

Besides, dozing off would cut off all the chances for those pesky flowers to bloom in your hair if an emotion swept you away in its currents.

Honestly, you really shouldn't have felt like this — the fatigue was slowly returning to your body the more you went to classes, but you didn't want to tell your mother of it. Neither did you want to acknowledge the sharp thoughts of self-deprecation, the words hitting like arrows.

Hurtful and offered no easy way to heal.

After Hanni touched up the colour of her electric blue and pink side fringes, she had yapped about how incredible this new music café was, how they had newly opened and she could hear the melodic tunes from miles away. Almost as if it was singing to her even through her dreams.

With touched-up hair tied in the way you desired, you and the girls walked down the sprightly street. Dani had her arm linked with yours, noticing the claws of fatigue engraved into your features.

She didn't comment on it, though, which you were grateful for.

"Omg, here it is!" Hanni exclaimed, pointing to this purple building, the neon blue sign competing with the daylight. This music café was called a simple 'Magix Melody', and inside, the pink sunset lighting was sprinkled into places across the interior, the walls a copper colour that instantly filled anyone with warmth.

You and the girls entered, a ding calling out to any servers nearby. The place oozed with warmth compared to the chilly breeze outside. You shuddered.

A waitress directed everyone to a long table that stretched on for the whole café, and placed the menus diligently before everyone.

"Guys, don't even think of getting too much. Otherwise, we can't eat at the restaurant I booked," Hanni said as she propped herself on the tall stool.

"Yeah, Minji. You always over order, and then we have to sit through your indecisiveness," Hyein said with a pointed look. Minji scoffed, swiftly flipping the page of the menu over.

"I do not. I'm just hopeful," she attempted to correct everyone. You and the girls chuckled slightly, not believing her poor attempt of constructing a lie.

"Well, we can't risk getting things we don't like." Dani scanned the menu with you. The drinks definitely looked delectable. And then, Hanni gasped.

"But look! There's a literal 'Sonic Swirl' drink! We have to get it—"

Minji clapped a hand over Hanni's mouth. Or, she reduced the volume by twenty per cent, glaring at the loud one, who was now glaring right back.

"We know, Hanni. We all have menus as well," she chastised and let her hand fall. You and the others smiled whilst Hanni rolled her eyes with mirth.

"I'm the birthday girl, so I can be as loud as I want."

"Yeah, if it doesn't get us kicked out." Haerin put the menu down with a raised eyebrow, the small patch of purple skin beneath her bangs shining slightly.

"To be fair, we are the only ones in here," you said, gesturing to the vastly empty spaces with tranquillity floating at every corner.

Hanni beamed, nodding as if you had given her a great reason to be celebrating her birthday so loudly. "Yn gets it."

"But, you do give headaches," you added on, casually staring back down at the menu. Failing to realise the sulk stitching into Hanni's face, she simply left it at that.

Halfway through, after getting the drinks and some pastries, your phone vibrated on the mahogany table. When you looked, Leerae's name popped up on the glass phone, asking where you were.

You scanned the messages diligently before turning to the girls. "Girlies?"

They all perked up simultaneously, as if in sync.

"Leerae said she saw us in town... she wants to know if she could join us?" You said to them, wanting to be a nice person to Leerae.

Generally, she didn't really hang out with you guys much, but she had allowed you deeper into her social circle. You didn't feel as if you were invading her space.

A silence fell over the group, one swarmed with unease and bewilderment. Confusion, really. Then, Minji straightened her back as she sat opposite you, hand idly twisting her cocktail glass.

"It's up to Hanni," she chimed, and all eyes snapped to the birthday girl. Said girl in question sipped the baby blue and crimson drink, her extended silence anchoring your positivity to the ground.

"I mean, more the merrier, I guess," she said with a small shrug, smiling kindly. It was that type of smile that couldn't reject anything

"You sure? I can just lie and say we're going home," you suggested and refrained from picking up your phone before a decision was reached. Hanni shook her head.

"Just invite her over. Maybe we could make her pay for our meals." She slightly smirked.

Leerae was joining after all.

WHO EVEN HAD A 2 WEEK BIRTHDAY ANYWAY? Heeseung did, of course. One to celebrate outside and at home. Jungwon found it a little ridiculous, but it was his wish to do so.

And he couldn't argue with that.

First of all, the day started at one PM when Heeseung slept in and snored without a care in the world. Considering he wanted to go out, the others truly thought he would bail and forget about going out.

It wouldn't be the first time he had done that. Though, despite the doubts from the group, Heeseung was ready by two PM, dressed in some dirty charcoal pants, a hoodie he easily zipped up, and a hat atop his wine-red locks.

Heeseung walked into the living room, seeing the boys already gathered and sat in the lounge, either on phones or talking. He frowned.

"So you guys were ready this whole time?" Heeseung inquired with a sag of his shoulders. Jay scoffed, leaning back with crossed arms.

"We've been ready since twelve. You know, because we had alarms."

The others murmured in agreement, causing Heeseung to give a vulgar gesture with his middle finger.

In town, the chaos was no different with the boys muttering what restaurant to go to and why they didn't care that Heeseung didn't have breakfast.

"It's your fault!" Jake had exclaimed.

"I was literally pre-finishing my homework," Heeseung remarked back as the group walked into the busy town centre of Magix. Sunghoon smirked a little, as if he knew something the others didn't.

"What homework? All I heard was your keyboard. And since when did you ever do homework before the weekends? You do it the hour before class," he called him out.

Heat rushed up Heeseung's neck, dismissing the words with a wave of his hand, and shoved his hands into his hoodie pockets.

Jungwon rolled his eyes, but it wasn't unfriendly at all. The boys were still discussing the place to eat when Jungwon was hurled forward by Riki. He turned and gave a look, which Riki just shrugged.

"They keep arguing over the restaurant they want to dine at. But to be honest, I choose that one." Riki pointed up ahead on the left.

The diner had a pastel yellow canopy, glass windows that had thin, yellow writing that displayed the name.

"Taste of Magix?" Jungwon repeated as they approached the front door. Riki hummed, hanging an arm around Jungwon's shoulders, directing him there.

Without even deciding, the other talkative members followed along, as if magnetised to Jungwon. That's what always happened. It was an unspoken dynamic that made up the friend group.

Jungwon walked, and they followed.

Once in front of the doors, Jungwon caught sight of the slight emptiness that pervaded the tables, leaving them absent. It left an ease that solidified his decision to go in, even if Heeseung didn't say where he wanted to eat.

"How about here?" Jungwon suggested to the others when he glanced over his shoulder. Heeseung was currently pushing Jay, Sunoo was laughing beside a smirking Sunghoon. And Jake was recording, of course.

When Jungwon spoke, they all straightened slightly. Heeseung stepped up and examined the shop with a fleeting gaze before nodding.

"Sounds good to me," he said with a shrug. The others murmured in agreement, and before Jungwon knew it, he was ushered in first without a second to steady himself.

The glass door hit his back as the others gathered behind him, urging him in, and he yelped when the door gave way and made him bump into the next thing there.

The next thing was a back and a startled 'oof' from whatever he bumped into. Glaring at Riki, Jungwon turned and froze when he saw you.

There you were, in a cosy cardigan with navy and beige stripes and a black skirt. And your eyes widened as they stared back at his, the pink, flushed flowers of embarrassment sprouting spontaneously in your hair. Jungwon raised an eyebrow but realised he was just standing there.

"I'm... so sorry," Jungwon mumbled after clearing his throat. The boys behind him finally stopped pushing and making a hassle. You peeked around him and saw the same six boys from the dragon incident.

One of them stopped, Sunghoon, and recognition swept over his eyes, face softening. You looked away to an awkward Jungwon.

"It's fine. Um, what are you doing here?" You asked softly, your tone melting his heart slightly. It felt like a burn in his chest, but one that he enjoyed slightly.

"Heeseung hung wants to celebrate his birthday," Jungwon replied smoothly. Your eyes lit up, and you pointed behind you to Hanni, the girl with pink and blue highlights.

"Hanni's birthday is today as well." You smiled up at him sweetly. He returned the look of ease before Heeseung wrapped an arm around his shoulder, pulling the younger one in.

That must have been the dude called Heeseung. You gave a wave, to which the taller dude smiled before turning to Jungwon.

"Are you gonna get us a table or keep staring at our fairy here?" Heeseung said, loud enough for you to hear and for the embarrassment to sweep up your neck.

Even Jungwon wanted to crawl into a hole and die, but he settled for nudging the older one in the ribs. Heeseung recoiled, rubbing his side with a scowl.

"I was waiting for them to get a table first. We're in line."

Heeseung glanced to you and the other girls again and gave a sly smile. You didn't exactly know what plans were being built behind it.

"Why don't we join you?" Heeseung chimed up, realising how red Jungwon's ears had gotten, and when he said that, Jungwon whipped his head to the older one.

Raising a sceptical eyebrow, you glanced at Heeseung and then back to your friends. Hanni was still talking to the waitress, and the girls, plus Leerae, were huddled around. Well, this was a tiny bit awkward.

Turning back to Heeseung, who was getting burned by Jungwon's sceptical stare, you spoke. "I'm... not the one to decide that."

Now, Heeseung's curiosity intrigued him more as he leaned forward to you.

"How come?"

"It's... Hanni's birthday. So, you would have to talk with her, to be honest," you said with a slight nudge of the head to your friend. Heeseung's eyes lit up as if some revelation had shined upon him.

"Birthday? What a coincidence! My birthday is today as well!" He exclaimed. Jungwon scoffed in response, a slight mirth in his eyes when he glanced at you.

"Not really. His birthday is next week. He just wants to be dramatic and celebrate it this week," he said, making you smile a little. Heeseung stuck a tongue out at Jungwon for revealing his secret.

"Don't say it too loud. We might not get a discount," mumbled the older one.

From behind you, Hanni went to grab your hand when she saw the familiar faces of the boys. When she saw Jungwon, she gave you a sly side-eye, to which you frowned slightly, knowing there was a landslide of thoughts she wanted to tease you with.

More plush pink flowers sprouted in the sides of your hair, and your cheeks burned.

"So, what's going on?" She inquired cheekily. Heeseung returned the same type of grin, and you noticed how similar their vibes were. Both of them had ingrained seeds of mischief in their demeanour.

It made both you and Jungwon nervous.

"Well, I was suggesting merging our tables together. But I had to ask the birthday girl apparantly," Heeseung replied easily. Hanni quirked an eyebrow, glancing to you thoughtfully.

God knows what she was even thinking. You thought it was a girl's day out. Then, she smiled and straightened her posture.

"Sure. Why not."

That's how you found yourself sat along the long couch, two tables pushed together, and with Jungwon sat next to you, arms almost brushing timidly.

You were holding your breath half the time, attempting to rein in the shyness sprouting in your chest, making it hard to think. Of course, Hanni had to agree. Of course, her sociability had to welcome anyone so easily. Sigh. She was just too kind.

It was admirable in a way.

Jungwon shifted, glaring at Heeseung because he knew that his hyung placed him there purposely. Heeseung ignored him, as if his gaze wasn't cutting into his very skin.

Distracting yourself with the menu, the waitresses soon came and took the orders in, and that left you on the edge of two simultaneous conversations. One is the boys, and then the girls as well.

You fiddled with your black skirt, stiffly sitting and pondering to yourself. You might as well make use of this awkwardness and let it evolve into something amicable.

Biting down on the anxiety, you shifted your gaze to Jungwon, who fiddled with his glass phone, sitting as silently as you.

"So... do you and Sunghoon duel each other often?" You asked timidly. Jungwon, not hear a word you said, abruptly lowered his head to you only to bump hard into your forehead.

A burst of pain erupted in the spot. and you winced along with Jungwon. You touched your forehead, and Jungwon panicked.

"Fuck. I'm sorry," he murmured, his hand brushing against your forehead, making your eyes freeze as he did that. The words dried in your throat, and you didn't understand how he had quite the effect on you.

More pink flowers sprouted in your hair, and his eyes were drawn to them, his hand already brushing past your locks to caress them out of pure curiosity. You don't think you were even breathing.

"Sorry... um, what did you say?" He asked, removing his hand from your head, and you let out a small puff of air.

"I was asking about your duels with Sunghoon... if it happens often," you repeated, more awkwardness gripping your tone and forcing your eyes to wander down to your skirt.

A small chuckle left his lips, the memory of your older brother laughing at him engraved in his mind. Like another sore memory he had to live with.

"Oh... that. You... uh, didn't see me fall, did you?"

A small smile and laugh slipped past your lips, amused mostly. The reaction already gave him an answer, and he ran a hand through his dark locks.

"Don't laugh..."

"I'm sorry, I... I didn't mean to. It's nothing to be embarrassed of," you reassured him, small, golden flowers replacing the pink ones that dissipated.

"And these..?" Jungwon questioned softly, his hand obliviously plucking the magic flower from your hair, only for it to crumble into specks of sparkles before disappearing completely in his palm.

Again, your muscles bolted into place until he took his hand away. Clearing your throat of the memory of a moment ago, you spoke. "They're flowers that pop up according to my emotions, so don't mind them."

There was an intruige that sparkled in his gaze, and he crossed his arms, eyes stuck to the sides of your head.

"That's... interesting, actually." Jungwon tilted his head.

"More like annoying. They come up everywhere," you corrected him, thinking of all the times your emotions showed in class and gave way your unknown answer to the teacher. Jungwon just nodded with mirth.

"Hey, at least we can tell if you're lying," he teased, making you roll your eyes slightly despite the warmth you felt from the small interaction.

"I'm an honest person anyway," you mused, tilting your chin up at him when he turned. Tilting his head in that attractive way again, he smirked ever so slightly.

"I'll take your word for it."

The interaction was short, but it a sprouted a sweet bud in your chest, filling the awkward gaps that had cracked there. For now, you were satisfied with that. And you knew you wanted more of what his words could plant into your chest.

Hot Take: Season 1 is better than Season 3 overall

I have to emphasize the overall because season 3 has a better main villain, better world building, and better transformations. However in terms of pacing and overarching story Season 1 is better and thus I found myself enjoying it much more.

Like, season 3 is great. However, when you think about it, Valtor’s only actively seeking out power from other villains when he gets involved with Diaspro and Cassandra. Otherwise he doesn’t do much, well, other than terrorized the Council of Light and turning Faragonda into a tree but not much of a power seeking quest you know, especially since he’s built up as a big threat. Also, the fact Radius was left hypnotized for so long urks me because they show Stella could defeat Cassandra and Chimera at any point but nah, we have other things to focus on. And the fact Valtor puts all of his stolen magic in a box instead of absorbing it is…ugh, so lame! There’s also Musa being toxic but the narrative portraying it as Riven being a problem. They did give us Nabu but he started off by stalking the Winx so uhhh, yeah, Timmy is still best boy!

Meanwhile, season 1 had like an escalation of the threat. The Trix went from mean girls to war criminals and it felt well paced with their goal to get the Dragon Flame. And the filler was fine because it helped us know the characters, while in season 3 it felt like the plot was getting dragged (WE DID NOT NEED THAT DIGIT EPISODE!!) Character arcs like for Bloom and Riven was also so much better in season 1. Bloom mostly learns about magic and having friends instead of being the weird girl with a power fantasy, and her discovering her origins before putting an end to the Ancestral Witches’ descendants. And Riven learns to be an anti-hero instead of a jerk after learning Darcy was using him. He was fun as a villain’s spy and a hero. Also the fights were epic for the fairies, especially the finale, that was really fun. I personally loved it more, my own gripe is the Miss Magix episode but honestly they could cut the racism with the afro hair and I’d be fine with it existing since again, season 1, we get to get used to those characters.

In conclusion I think season 1 is better because of the character arcs for Bloom and Riven, the story escalation and the fight scenes, as well as not having as many inconsistencies or annoying parts as season 3, not to mention the Trix utilizing the Dragon Flame’s power while Valtor puts the second sun of Solaria in a jewelry box.

I swear I dont wanna be mean but why does everyone keep making stella fat. Why is it that the most attractive character, whom everyone finds beautiful inside the show, is the one who is always turned fat. Like... No one would find her attractive if her canon design was like that. I promise im not being mean but I feel like the artists are always projecting themselves onto Stella and wanting to be loved like she is, cause usually the ones making her fat are fat too, like I saw your selfies and you're a bit curvy. I promise im not being mean im just curious.

For starters, send me more fat Stella’s if you can I haven’t seen that many made and would love to see more varied takes on her appearances in redesigns.

Secondly, I made her fat because I think it’s nice to have the character that’s canonically considered to be the most beautiful girl in all of magix, a fashion icon in the magical dimension, a very celebrated trendsetter, be something other than the stereotypical concept of socially acceptable fashion tropes. She isn’t an hourglass, she has cellulite and stretch marks, she’s super pear shaped, and that can be and should be considered something to be normal, since they are, and shouldn’t be seen as things that need to be hidden. Having that put on a loud and proud fashion girly seems good imo and it can only really contribute to good stuff for body image stuff and representation. I did it so people like you could reconsider that beauty is something that comes in multiple forms and shouldn’t have to fit one type of standard. If we wanna get super technical too those standards also very from culture to culture and I image that’s extended even further in Winx club.

The girls are all aliens from different worlds. There’s bug people. There’s a lady in the miss magix episode that has tentacle hair, a blue body, and tentacle hands and feet. I highly doubt beauty standards in canon would be the same as what you’re saying, ie that no one would consider her beautiful. As if people who look like her irl also would inherently be considered not beautiful too. I know lots of people who have people that think they’re the hottest thing ever and they have all sorts of different body types and traits. Lets just call it realism lol

I’m not really projecting any of my physical stuff on her also, outside of I guess stretch marks and cellulite?? But I put those on other characters too so I don’t really think that holds up. I actually put my old body type on Flora since she’s my favorite, but now I’m way more midsized, like a slightly thinner Bloom from my stuff (love this unit of measurement gonna start using the gorls as a reference point for my appearance going forward lol). I’ve always had the “socially acceptable” fat type of body, ie hourglass with even proportions and a super snatched waist. I just think it’s tired and trite to constantly reenforce the idea that “the hot fashion one” needs to be tall and thin all the time, and if she is made fatter, that she needs to look like I did ie not much of a tummy with super equal proportions, big boobs, and a big ass.

Kinda related to that also, I made a post about a lot of character design “rules” too that I think are kinda outdated and annoying, at least to me, since I’ve seen them a million times. We all have. So I decided to do something different that I think would be good for normalizing traits outside of what we consider typically acceptable for that kind of character.

I’m already very loved also and don’t need to project anything on Stella lmaooo

I got multiple partners, great friends, do modeling, and am slaying with my own fashion and appearance stuff outside of that too. That’s all independent of whatever I’m doing with her physical body type when I draw her.

Gonna level with you also, you going “I’m not trying to be mean” doesn’t erase how weird this ask is. Sounds like you have your own gripes that you need to work through. Like, if you consider those traits on Stella ugly, that means you definitely have some internalized hatred for fatness, skin blemishes, scarring, and other peoples’ general appearances if they don’t fit some specific molds that aren’t realistic for the majority of people. Even if it is just genuine curiosity, being aware of this stuff going forwards and reevaluating how you view beauty standards and bodies in general would do you a great benefit imo.

Thanks for going through my old selfies tho it was pretty weird of you but at least make sure to leave a like on them. I looked hot when I was fatter and I look hot now too sharing this with the world is the least I can do💕✨💕✨

Any thoughts about the Reveal concerning Bloom's heritage? Who learns first, when, in what circumstances?

Okay there's different parts of the Reveal of her heritage. There's the general 'this is probably what you are' reveal, the 'your family is from Domino' reveal and the 'oh shit you're a Princess' reveal.

So the general reveal kinda happens right off the bat.

Bloom knows she's adopted. When Stella shows up and explains 'hey there's a world of Magic' and the whole 'Earth doesn't have Magic', they discuss what's happening. Well them, plus Bloom's parents and also Faragonda because Stella brings them all to Alfea.

Given the circumstances, they realize it's likely that Bloom originally came from one of the other Realms and ended up on Earth. It's not even unrealistic, as people do visit Earth (like Stella did in the first episode). So a family on vacation that gets separated somehow makes sense.

As for Domino

That happens during the Miss Magix episode as the focus is being rewritten.

So like. One thing I'm leaning heavy into with this is the 'presented as Fantasy but also very Sci-Fi' where all the different Realms are different Planets and everyone has different funky biology. This would be something kinda in the background but not fully explained until now.

Bloom was initially under a Glamour Spell, created by Daphne so she'd blend in on Earth. But now that she's awakened her Magic and transformed a few times, the Glamour has worn off. While her Faerie Form already had some dragon imagery, this is now 24/7 scales.

She wakes up with dragon-y features, freaks out, and the girls connect the above dots. She gets a crash course of the different alien biology. With Stella using this as an excuse to drag them to the Miss Magix competition as it's a fashion show that really highlights the different appearances (alongside different Realms' beauty standards.

Anyway!

Another plot point is that people, like. Know about Domino. The whole Incident™ only happened less than 2 decades ago, after all. And there's also a handful of survivors.

So people know what Dominians look like and can connect the dots with Bloom.

As for the Princess thing!

The first ones to figure it out are Faragonda and Tecna.

Faragonda is suspicious in general. Like at first she's fine to think that Bloom just 'ended up on Earth'. But Dominian features, plus being actively under a Glamour that someone had to have cast on her, Bloom being incredibly powerful, and then she starts dreaming of someone named 'Daphne' and..... well, if Domino's younger Princess /was/ alive, she'd be just about Bloom's age, right?

Tecna also connects these dots around the same time. Though she's unsure who to bring this up to. She does tell Faragonda who's like 'look I have also connected the dots but we need to investigate and be sure because this is something Major.'.

Later on we also get Timmy connecting the dots when the Winx explain everything to the Specialists.

We get a funnier moment of connecting the dots with Griffin because Faragonda takes Bloom to Cloud Tower to search their Library (instead of the sneaking in from Canon). And as Bloom explains what they know she's just side eye-ing Faragonda like "Girl I KNOW you have connected the dots just tell her already damn it".

I don't think the Trix /fully/ connect the dots, but they do realize that Bloom has the Dragon Flame for some reason. They probably question 'who the fuck is she to get this power???'.

Originally everyone who had connected the dots were doing the 'ya know what let's wait and see what all is happening so it doesn't freak her the hell out' thing and not telling Bloom

But then they realize that the Trix are an actual legitimate threat and not just 'school rivalry gone too far', and they're targeting Bloom, and ya know what she deserves to know why. So now the whole gang knows.

I think they're kind of in denial until they actually go to Domino and see Daphne's Ghost and all and it really hits 'oh fuck she's the lost Princess'.

Winx, The Roxy Chronicles: Lucy and Mirta

Not really redesigns, just giving these poor girls proper magical forms because c'mon why not

They would be just minor characters in TRC, it felt right to include them and show that they're doing well as adults

And why yellow for Lucy? I think it's too safe putting her in dark blue or green, Lucy's got a lot of depth to her and I didn't want her to look standard. So her witch form is yellow, based on her dress from Miss Magix
