Doggett is again the right pick for Congress’ District 37

U.S. House District 37 Lloyd Doggett

These days it can be less than flattering to be called a fixture in Congress.

It can mean you’re old or coasting in a government body not known for getting things done.

But if 77-year-old Lloyd Doggett is a fixture in the U.S. House of Representatives, where he has served since 1995, it’s for the right reasons.

It’s because Austin and Central Texas voters want him there looking after them and their best interests.

As our Editorial Board has noted before, Doggett is a proven fighter for Austin.

It is why we recommend voters elect the Austin Democrat to a 16th term in Congress over Republican candidate Jenny Garcia Sharon, who declined an invitation to meet with us, and Libertarian Girish Altekar.

Early in-person voting in the Nov. 5 elections begins Monday, Oct. 21 and continues through Nov. 1.

Doggett is seeking his third term representing the redistricted turf of U.S. House District 37, which stretches south from Austin to San Antonio.

Throughout his career, Doggett has demonstrated he is attuned to Austin voters’ values and needs, and uses his knowledge, clout and advocacy to be effective.

Such was the case in 2023, when after a string of potentially catastrophic near-misses between aircraft at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, Doggett called for 'swift and forceful action' by the Federal Aviation Administration to increase the number of air traffic controllers for the airport.

In a statement to the Editorial Board in late September, Doggett said the FAA, despite agreeing that a shortage of controllers at ABIA is serious, had yet to increase their number.

He said he would continue to press the agency to 'safeguard the public and avoid a catastrophe.'

And in February, Doggett said the airport has received over $100 million for airport expansion and other needs through the federal Infrastructure Law, legislation which he said every Texas Republican in Congress opposed.

But in an interview with the Editorial Board, Doggett noted the bipartisan effort he supported with the help of two key Texas Republicans — U.S. Rep. Michael McCaul and U.S. Senator John Cornyn — to pass the CHIPS and Science Act, which will provide $6.4 billion in funding for semiconductor production giant Samsung’s manufacturing facility in Taylor.

Doggett’s longtime advocacy for things like lowering prescription drug prices and passing gun reforms rarely receive assists like that in the Republican-led Senate.

But he remains a dogged and thoughtful advocate for Austin voters. It is why we recommend voters keep him in Congress

Today the class was canceled because of the typhoon because it rained so hard so the class was canceled i just did my assignments and i didn't finish it because i also had work to do at home because we were flooded and there was a lot that needed to be cleaned and done because of the flood, we entered the house.

Even though there is no school because of the heavy rain because of the typhoon, i still worked on my assignment because there was a lot of work due to not being able to go to school because of being suspended because of the typhoon because of heavy rain almost all the houses were flooded.

SEPTEMBER 4, 2024

We already have school, it's not that rainy, but when we were in the second subject, it suddenly rained very hard, what we did in the first subject was hopefully perform, the role play we did, but it didn't last because we practiced first, ma'am said it is said that the next time at our UTS, we did a quiz and give a pair work.

Today there was no school because it rained so hard this morning what i did was missing was an assignment to make a journal for UTS, but it didn't finish because there was too much and i also did something here at home because it was raining a lot it might flood, but let's go into our living room, but it's better because it's raining intermittently, for sure i'm going to school tomorrow.

I just did an assignment because our class was suspended because of the typhoon i did all my assignments, especially the assignment that was close i actually did it when i was in the i do this while there is no class and then i also help with homework to clean because we were almost flooded.

Woke up feeling refreshed after a good night's sleep had a delicious breakfast of scrambled eggs with avocado toast and a cup of coffee spent the morning catching up on emails and organizing my to-do list for the week ahead , went for a long walk in the park with my dog, enjoying the crisp autumn air and the colorful leaves.

Tears in Abia as tanker crushes fresh graduate after clearance

A fresh graduate of Abia State Polytechnic, Aba, Miss Ezekiel Mary Ogechi was on Tuesday, crushed by a fast moving tanker in front of the institution. Ogechi, who studied accounting in the Polytechnic, came to the school to carry out academic clearance, in preparation to go for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme, but met her tragic end. DAILY POST gathered that after carrying out the clearance, she exchanged pleasantries with her classmates, expressing joy that she would soon be mobilized for the NYSC. The late student was said to have made distinction in accounting and was seen as a shining light in her department. It was learnt that she already received a scholarship from an organization to do a post-graduate course. “Unfortunately, she was hit by a tricycle while trying to cross to the other side of the road; before she could get up, she was then crushed by a fast moving truck,” a source told DAILY POST. On realizing that Oge, as she was fondly called, was lying dead under the truck, infuriated students of the Polytechnic mobilized for a protest. “The management of the Abia State Polytechnic and the Students Union Government of the institution saved the day as the angry students were begged to calm down,” the source further stated. No statement had been issued by the Polytechnic about the development as of the time of filing this report. Also, a message sent to the spokesperson of Abia State Police Command, ASP Maureen Chinaka by DAILY POST on the matter was not replied. Recall that late last year, a man in his late 30s was also crushed by a trailer in the state. The Keke rider was said to have been contracted to take the children home, but he ended up taking them to an unknown destination after picking them from school. The kidnapped students are identified as Mmesoma, Testimony, Godswill and Chinwotito, children of one Chimobi Agah, a resident of Umuagu, Umuahia. Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Abia State Command, ASP Maureen Chinaka, said the incident was reported at the Ohuhu Police Station on November 28, 2023. The police spokesperson said the parents of the missing children reported that the Keke rider took them to an unknown destination. "They reported the matter to the Ohuhu Police Station and the DPO in charge of the division swung into action, searching for the kids in the neighborhood, including hotels. “Investigation is ongoing on the matter,” she said. It was gathered that the father of the children, Agah, is an indigene of Amasiri in Ebonyi State but resides and does business in Abia State. Agah was said to be in Enugu State on a business trip when the incident happened. He immediately returned to Umuahia after his wife informed him of the development. It was also gathered that the Keke rider was not known to the family before he was engaged by the mother of the children to take them to their school.
