it is. i’m no stranger to racism in world-building, i’m a dragon age series veteran. i think i falsely believed that a game studio in 2023 might be able to do a little better.

but what i’m asking is this: why do potential romantic partners (namely, astarion with deep gnomes in my personal experience) say racist things directly to the player character with no repercussions, apology, or option to correct or reflect?

and why MUST racism within the context of the game’s setting even be part of the world building? what does it provide? is it worth the discomfort of non-white players?

i want to be clear that i am not scolding, saying anyone shouldn’t play the game, or saying that anyone who plays the game is racist. i am just asking people to ruminate on this, and maybe, if they can, help demand better from game studios.

what does it mean for a white player to play and enjoy this game, and see racism as a necessary and inherent to any world, or maybe just a fun bit of grittiness?

how will racist behaviors, comments, micro-aggressions of in-game friends and lovers affect players who have faced real-life racial adversity? would it be as fun for them? is it worth the harm? with no option to correct a character or have them learn, how might someone feel?

i know as a native person, hearing astarion write off my character’s kin as less-than, hardly even people, was deeply upsetting to the point where i’ve been reluctant to pick the game back up again— because it reflects real life situations i’ve been in, and been privy to. it left me feeling a breach of trust with no remedy or ability to correct.

No, liking fictional cop/fash/genocider characters generally doesn't directly reflect on the ethics and principles of a person or creative. In that same vein, liking a character of colour or oppressed character doesn't necessitate that said fan/creative is an ethical or consistently anti-racist person.

But larger patterns of fan idolization versus fan indifference tends to reflect the problems of the larger cultures that we inhabit/are subjected to. This isn't a call to shame or harass anyone, or fake an appreciation or denouncement for specific characters as a way to deflect criticism. But when someone notes a phenomenon both in the media we enjoy AND the fandoms that stem off of said media, the response isn't to become defensive or deny it altogether.

My dash is nice but I've heard murmurs of disk horse and I just hope we're not about to victim blame characters who were taken advantage of, groomed, abused, and/or have had their clear sense of devotion and loyalty hijacked by bad actors or incredibly powerful forces using these people to fulfill their own agenda.

Anyway to the anon months ago who told me, to paraphrase because they were longer-winded and not as nice, “Disney doesn’t resort to calling fans racist when faced with valid criticism, that’s ridiculous” when I criticised Disney and a certain actress falling back on “if you don’t like Kenobi then you’re racist” as a shield against bad writing, what’s your excuse for Netflix pulling the same nonsense with Witcher: Blood Origin? Or really any of the other recent movies because “if you don’t like this piece of media you’re a racist” has been all of Hollywood’s shield against criticism for years now.

what’s gonna motivate me to finish my book is the fact that people are so goddamn ignorant about the past and that writers are also so eager to appease these people. they write perfect, successful women & men who uphold today’s standard of goodness unwaveringly during past time periods, which is so massively unfair to the women & men of yesterday who couldn’t be those people. because it didn’t work like that. women suffered. they took pills and starved themselves and said nasty thing about one another because that’s what they’d been taught. sure there were exceptions but even those exceptions wavered; they cheated with men or cheated on them. they were bad mothers or lackluster mothers. they drank excessively and they suffered mental breakdowns that didn’t harm only themselves. and the men! so many of them suffered too. they were expected to uphold a level of masculinity that was just stupid. they went to wars and saw their children go to wars. they were expected to live with it, to not talk about it, to not even pretend they wanted to talk about it. and god forbid you were attracted to another man! my god, it was a death sentence. i’m pleased to be writing characters who are assholes. i would’ve been one too and i’m sure everyone who tries to pretend they are so morally perfect would be the biggest ones of all.
