Archovember 2024 Day 3 - Gorgosaurus libratus
The apex predator of Western North America during the Late Cretaceous was Gorgosaurus libratus. Found so far in Alberta, Canada and Montana, USA, it lived several million years before Tyrannosaurus rex would appear. While it was a tyrannosaurid, it was more closely related to Albertosaurus, so much so that some scientists consider it to be another species of Albertosaurus. Gorgosaurus is the most numerous tyrannosaurid in the fossil record, known from dozens of specimens. This abundance of fossils has allowed paleontologists to investigate Gorgosaurus’ ontogeny, life history and many other aspects of its biology. For example, in 2023, a 5-7 year old juvenile Gorgosaurus was discovered with stomach contents consisting of two intact Citipes juveniles about a year old. This showed that younger Gorgosaurus’ were mostly eating prey much smaller than them, and were probably not hunting in packs, as the meal would not have been large enough to share. That being said, only the remains of the hindlimbs and caudal vertebrae of the juvenile Citipes were present, suggesting that this Gorgosaurus may have had a preference for the muscular hindlimbs. Many Gorgosaurus specimens also preserve evidence of facial scars, a result of intraspecies facebiting.
Gorgosaurus would have lived on the coastal plain along the western edge of the Western Interior Seaway, an inland sea which divided North America in half during the Late Cretaceous. The area was subtropical with periods of drought. Conifers would have dominated the forests, while the underbrush consisted of ferns, tree ferns and angiosperms. Gorgosaurus is best known from the Dinosaur Park Formation. Here, it would have lived alongside another apex predator: Daspletosaurus wilsoni. While these tyrannosaurids were roughly the same size, they may have preferred different types of prey, allowing them to coexist without too much competition. And there was a wide diversity of prey here, from many of the most famous ornithopods like Parasaurolophus walkeri, Corythosaurus casuarius, Gryposaurus notabilis, and Lambeosaurus lambei, to beloved ceratopsians like Styracosaurus albertensis, Centrosaurus apertus, Chasmosaurus belli, Spinops sternbergorum, and Vagaceratops irvinensis. There were also ankylosaurs like Anodontosaurus inceptus, Dyoplosaurus acutosquameus, Edmontonia rugosidens, Euoplocephalus tutus, Panoplosaurus mirus, Platypelta coombsi, and Scolosaurus. Pachycephalosaurids included Foraminacephale and Stegoceras validum. Gorgosaurus also shared space with other, smaller theropods, like the ornithomimids Ornithomimus and Rativates, caenagnathids like Caenagnathus, Chirostenotes, and Citipes, dromaeosaurids like Dromaeosaurus and Saurornitholestes, and troodontids like Latenivenatrix and Stenonychosaurus. Dinosaurs were not the only animals here, and Gorgosaurus would have also had to share space with the giant azhdarchid pterosaur Cryodrakon, as well as alligatoroids like Albertochampsa and Leidyosuchus, and choristoderes like Champsosaurus. Gorgosaurus is also known from the Two Medicine Formation and Judith River Formation.

WELL GATHERED FRIENDS, 810NICLE DAY IS FINALLY UPON US!
I am pleased to announce that - in celebration of Legends of Metru Nui's 20th anniversary - 0m3g4's Kanohi Forge is updating to include Metru Nui Matoran Kanohi Mystery Packs! (Try saying that six times fast!)
Each pack will include two random Kanohi from within my current molds - the Great Hau, Pakari, Miru, Kakama, and introducing the Akaku and Huna; as well as the Noble Ruru, Mahiki, Matatu, Komau, and introducing the Huna, Rau, and Kiril!
Pieces can appear in Red, Yellow, Blue, Black, White, and Bright Pink, all blended with a matched Silver for the era! Blend affects can be quite varied based on colour, shape, and batch so each piece is very unique!
Get your hands on some here!
For y'all familiar with my previous blind bags (which are still around!) These Metruan packs are guaranteed good quality unlike those.

Every Bionicle mask-power summarised.
Hau: Everything-proof shield
Kaukau: "Hey, wanna see how long I can hold my breath underwater?"
Miru: Somewhat balanced flight powers (can't take off from a standstill; horizontal movement at least somewhat controlled by wind)
Kakama: Wheeeeeeeee!
Pakari: Kinda like the Berserk Pack from Doom
Akaku: X-ray specs
Huna: Stealth mode
Rau: Google Translate
Mahiki: Illusions, but also just full-on shapeshifting for some reason?
Komau: Hypnotism kink
Ruru: "Night vision", which canonically manifests as a torch-like beam projected from the mask's front, and gives the wearer actual night-vision, and yet more x-ray stuff
Matatu: Gmod Physgun Telekinesis Addon 2004 No Virus
Calix: Basically X-Cell from Fallout 4 but without the intelligence boost
Elda: Thing finder, for finding things
Suletu: Telepathy and also psychic torture
Sanok: Aimbot
Kadin: Very unbalanced flight powers (literally the only downside is that the user can't hover in place)
Iden: Out of body from morning to night/Dance floor packed and I'm feeling alright
Arthron: *Whale noises*
Faxon: "Hey, wanna see my animal impressions?"
Zatth: Kinda like if going "pspsps" had an equal chance of attracting a cat, a bear or a car-sized land-octopus
Garai: Gravity-y-y-y-y-y, on me/Never let me down, gent-ly damn, two Gorillaz references in one post; I'll try to use another band next time
Volitak: Same as the Huna but worse
Tryna: Wise fwom your gwave!
Jutlin: Rust-vision
Avsa: *Vampire noises*
Felnas: Messes up your abilities, but only through touch for some reason?
Mohtrek: I have no idea how I'd condense this mask's timeline-fuckery into a single se- where did all these scars come from?
Shelek:
Crast: Pushes others away
Mask of Mutation: Guess.
Mask of Scavenging/Vulture: Like the Avsa, but it only works on the recently-deceased
Pehkui: Makes you tiny
Mask of Clairvoyance: The last word of this post will be "diversity"
Kualsi: Nightcrawler powers
Mask of Emulation: "Hey, wanna see my non-animal impressions?"
Mask of Growth: Makes you big
Mask of Rahi Control: Gives you all the powers of a zookeeper
Avohkii: Let there be light!
Kraahkan: Actually I changed my mind; there should darkness
Mask of Psychometry: Ever wondered where your favourite shirt came from?
Rode: Mask of Seeing Through Your Shit
Olmak: Now you're thinking with portals
Mask of Charisma: Actually functions more like brainwashing
Olisi: Isn't it weird how Bionicle's most notable use of the "mad oracle" trope is A. unreliable and B. a giant Frankenstein-man who commits body-horror on random people?
Kiril: Basically the opposite of the Jutlin
Mask of Intangibility: *Ghost noises*
Mask of Possibilities: Essentially the Improbability Drive from Madness Combat, but on a smaller scale
Mask of Elemental Energy: who cares about this one like seriously it barely appears outside the games
Mask of Adaptation: Turns you into an environment-specific action figure
Mask of Aging: The mask that makes you old
Mask of Biomechanics: Essentially the Gmod ragdoll-mover addon
Mask of Conjuring: I'm just going to copy what Biosector says, since it's really convoluted and complex; "The Mask of Conjuring is a Kanohi that allows its user to verbally program a limited power into the mask for a brief period of time. The user must describe in detail the power desired and at least one weakness. If the phrasing is spoken wrong, it causes intense psychic backlash in the user's mind. The user can use a programmed power for fifteen minutes (with a Great version), and after the time is out, the user must wait thirty seconds to activate the mask again. The Noble version will only work for five minutes. Another weakness is because it requires time and speech, any enemies nearby can hear in detail what power to expect and what its weakness is. Because of this, the usage of the mask is more commonly done alone. It is also capable of being programmed with the powers of other masks, such as the Kanohi Hau."
Mask of Freezing: What do you think it does
Mask of Fusion: Combines things • Mask of Healing: Heals stuff
Mask of Incomprehension: 👁️🧠🫵🥫🚹🇮🇹📤
Mask of Rebounding: Something something rubber glue etc.
Mask of Reconstitution: Literally just another Mask of Mutation, but slightly worse
Mask of Sensory Aptitude: 'Cause I've got one two three four five/Senses working o-ver-ti-ime!
Mask of Undeath: I live... again!
Mask of Weather Control: /weather clear 18000
Mask of Weight Increase: Literally just a Garai that can't make things lighter
Ignika: Do-anything MacGuffin that turned into a guy once and also became God's hat for a bit
Vahi: Time isn't holding up/Time isn't after us/Same as it ever was/Same as it ever was...
Mask of Creation: Just kinda lets you make stuff, while also celebrating the Matoran Universe's cultural diversity!

First post of 2024: More Shuu!!
I was tempted to try and make pseudo-human designs for Miru and Kaku, but quickly realized that even in that sort of situation they still show up as odd packing peanut bird children. Velli encouraged me, though, so I continued forwards and made these little things after finishing episode 3 of Holiday Star

Last time we saw this party, they were on their way out of the Temple when they were found by Untazi, the cultist priest. The cultists working beneath him pose little threat to the party, but Untazi calls upon the power of Zehir, and an Eidolon comes to his aid, taking control of a giant snake statue.
Mirus the incubus and Nuhlu the Yuan-ti Pureblood support, but it was mainly the newcomers, Ziku, Cherchael, Earl, Quierk, and Noelle, who won the fight. Cherchael Tidal Waves the underlings into submission, Earl corners Untazi, and Quierk confronts the statue. Noelle gets up, even after being KO'd to get the finishing blow on Untazi.
On their way out of the Temple, they grab the unpoisoned food the chef Malison had prepared and have a refreshing meal with the slaves before a long rest. The next day, the slaves are already looking better.
Cherchael decides to do a tarot reading to assess their plans for the day, drawing The Hermit, the 9 of Wands, and the Knight of Pentacles. She reads this as yesterday's events being a good move, we should continue on a similar pace, and if we commit, the plan will succeed.
They leave the slave hostel and meet with Palmira and Nuhlu on the first level. They're briefed on what has happened in the Temple since. The other two Nightmare Speakers are on high alert but most of the other Yuan-ti are unmoved. The Yuan-ti Pureblood are now a united front and will help the party where they can.
The group moves back up to the second floor. Ziku finds a prayer chamber leading to a door she was never allowed to enter. Curiosity getting the better of her, Ziku barges past some Malisons to open the door.
The party and some nearby Purebloods help Ziku to defeat the Malisons, but the mystery door lead to their egg chamber for the Temple, and a pack of Broodguards jump out to attack. Ziku and the Purebloods work together to settle down the Broodguards, who are trained to always obey any Yuan-ti.
The party and their allies take time to rest before heading up to the Third Floor. Quierk overhears a conversation in the next room, the upper brass are trying to increase security on this floor. Quierk decides they need to shut up whoever is saying this, and rushes out to attack.
They arrive in a large hall, where Melashi, the second Nightmare Speaker, directs a group of Malisons to attack the party. Ziku and Cherchael move out to pick off single targets. Quierk and Noelle defend themselves at the door.
Earl moves up ahead to take advantage of a sacrifice pit, and pushes in one of Melashi's guards, before he and his Echo spear it to death. Melashi tries to warp Earl's mind, but he shakes it off, his echo approaching menacingly. Ziku moves in too, and between she and Earl, Melashi has no escape and is bisected by Earl's Halberd.
While searching her body they find a Ruidium shortsword on Melashi's body. It seems the Apotheon's curse has already reached beyond Ank'Harel.
Next session, they will hunt down the third Nightmare Speaker, and perhaps confront Shisara, the tyrant of this temple.

May I inquire people well-versed in making bonkles in stud.io help?
I've seen a Kaukau with a separate visor being used. Looking for it, I found a Miru with separated forehead part (MNOG-style) in KrayDay's pack, iirc. But no Kaukau.
Does anyone know where to get a Kaukau like that?

Some Stud.io stuff...
as the title suggests, have some pics of a project I was working on recently, as a result of having grabbed just about every Stud.io parts pack I could find and get my hands on.
As such, I present to you, the ‘01 combiners: the Kaita Mata, Akamai and Wairuha!
TBH, I had a different set of masks in mind when I set off to do ^this^, but apparently the KhingK pack is not available anymore (or at least it’s damn near impossible to get one’s hands on the last version produced by VootCaboot ever since they dropped KhingK’s stuff from their Gdrive of packs). Apparently, there was a lot of drama there re: KK, which I don’t have anything to do with (and thus won’t get involved with, either). Also, as I noticed due to the masks I did use, the Kaita probably inspired the creation of the original Teridax build.
As you can see here, I’m mostly using parts from @valtarshol and Kingsidorak’s numerous and varied parts packs, with some scattered bits from other, smaller collections (like Rothanak and Godfyr, in this example) as well. And yes, Akamai’s left arm has a universal joint in it. Thank Valtarshol for that, it’s pretty neat. And his hand on that arm is made of some of Val’s Turaga foot design, with the axle-sockets clipping through the back because there isn’t an axle hole (Imma poke Val about that later...)
Another shot, where you can see more of Val’s handiwork in the Onua digging claws. They’re articulated, with about 16 parts per claw!
Back shot. Surprise, btw! The lower torso pieces have a gearbox function available (again, thanks to Val), tho I had to cheat to do some torso piston capability on the black and brown bodies. Oh well, not like I’m making these IRL!
Wairuha, more of the same from before, though with the addition of the large Kopaka sword from Turret 3471. The large axe head (and the shield bits) come from Valtarshol, if anyone’s curious, and the rest of the axe is vanilla pieces in weird colors. The big green “hand” on the right arm is from Kingsidorak.
The Miru is also from Rothanak, same as Akamai’s Hau.
Rear shot. Second verse, same as the first.
@wjbs-bonkle-au and @bethveni might appreciate these too, idk. Or not. Hope someone enjoys them, at least. Not gonna render them, at least not rn: got other ideas to get out of my head, as well as other plans to do things with but I’ve also been putting off because of executive dysfunction.

On this Day
May 30th 2018
I did another Drawing featuring Spot @murumokirby360 and he entered Weapon's Bed from Sonic Adventure 2. Depending on the Story, Spot is assigned to rush into the Government Base. Like he got into his Murukir Walker and entered this level. Like he said he'll go first to extract the troops and then carry out his plans. This was drawn ever since a terrible thing happened. So I came with let's say Miru's Adventure 2, Spot assigned Lisa to go into the Federal Commission Office so she can set the timer on these Dynamite Packs so once that's in place, they'll blow up the building to get a chance to know what hit them, then Luna is assigned to go to the Government Electronic Store and get the Switch Consoles. In Maxwell's Adventure 2, Spot was assigned the same tasks for Shadow and Yinna. But Spot told the gang they only got 30 minutes to pull it off and only get one try. So then Spot, Lisa, Shadow, Luna and Yinna will be ready to do their tasks. They especially have to do it before the bomb goes off.
People I tagged @bryan360

* ∙ ✰ ◞ ⤫ ( 𝒕𝒂𝒌𝒆 𝒂 𝒑𝒊𝒄𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆 ) june 2023 / the airport appearance at jeju finally puts everything in place for miru / 400 words.
for the past couple of days, miru feels like she’s been living in a limbo.
everything felt like a dream, and it was almost as if she was moving like a robot that was programmed to follow the new instructions given to her. instead of waking up and going to train with the regular trainees, she found herself in a room with the other iaem members, coming up with choreography for what will soon be her song.
that’s all to say that nothing actually felt real just yet. even as she’s packing for the jeju island trip—was that even the right term when they’d be working there anyway?—she’s more occupied with what the island will look like rather than the activities she’ll be doing there. the phone call with her sister has made her giddy, but nothing’s been enough to prove to miru that this wasn’t all some giant april fools joke being played on her.
it’s the moment she steps off the airplane and out to jeju airport when everything dawns on her. there are flashes going off and a few people screaming out the names of the other members. she takes a look around and is almost in awe at how natural the original members look. surely, she looks like she’s out of place.
suddenly, there’s a camera in front of her, and she’s taken aback. however, it’s at this moment where miru realizes that she’s a part of this too. she’s a part of iaem. not officially just yet, but she will be very soon. that was the whole point of this jeju trip along with this airport appearance. she’s a bit surprised to see a trail of reporters focusing on her, but she does her best to look like this is a piece of cake.
the only time she’s ever been photographed was for the local newspapers back home when her team did great. this, however, was on another level. by the time the girls have made it out of the airport lobby and into their vans, miru can’t even recall what just went on.
everything sort of flew over her head because of how hectic it was. nevertheless, it was a little more realistic than whatever’s happened so far. maybe it’s because her surroundings have changed, but it’s really become apparent that her dreams are coming true.
now, she can’t wait for what’s to come.

Lynn's Bionicle Media Looking-At Thing Part 2: Power Pack, or: "That One Time I Had To Download Alcohol 120% Just To Run A Random Bionicle Promo Disc"
Also please note that this is pre-lawsuit, so they throw around the T-word a lot. Be warned.
I was going to record a video for this, but OBS didn't like this one so it'll just be screenshots. Not that it matters, since most of the CD isn't animated.
When you start the program, a cool little intro animation plays showing a zoom into the island of Mata Nui, specifically the northern part where Po-Koro is.
You are then plonked into Po-Koro. You can pan the camera left and right. Here's a stitched-together image of the entire view:
Now for the individual things, starting from the left and going right.
Onewa overview
A picture of Onewa that you can click different parts of to learn more about him.
Bionicle trailer thingy
For some reason, the map of Mata Nui shows a trailer that seems to be original, and I wish I could get a recording of it, but alas, I can't.
Pohatu overview
The Onewa overview, but for Pohatu.
The Toa icons along the bottom play their respective promotional animations but doesn't change the viewed Toa, which is good because I don't want to use up this post's image limit with 24 screenshots of each Toa's overview, mask and tool.
Golden Kanohi Treasure Hunt
A simple quiz that, presumably, was part of a contest. Can you solve it?
Hafu overview
Ah yes, the man himself, who was included with physical releases (which I don't have; I'm using the version from Biomedia). This overview is different compared to Onewa and Pohatu's, as it lacks the icons along the side, and reveals extra details when you click things.
Bionicle: Quest For The Toa gameplay demo
Ok so this is. A weird one. From the name you'd expect, like, a short playable demo for Bionicle: Quest For The Toa (which uses its original name because 2001), but it isn't; instead, it's a gameplay showcase that appears to have been recorded from a GBA via camcorder.
Mask room
And finally, the mask room. You can click the masks to read about them. Also the word "Miru" is spelled wrong.
And finally, the most important feature...
The exit button
This quits out to this screen:
Anyway I've reached the image limit, which does mean I can't include the fact that the Hau's description claims that it can't protect against surprise attacks.

I did see that answer from him, but to be honest, it doesn't really mean much to me what Greg thinks? Idk, the Bionicle fandom as a whole has been far too reliant on Word of God in general, and it's hurt as much as it's helped. Whatever Greg's thoughts on the matter are, he never wrote about any other Toa Kaita in the official story, so anything else he has to say about the matter is more or less moot in my eyes. The vagueness of these particular answers doesn't help their case.
Okay, and I apologize for this, but can I go on a little rant here about BS01 deciding the canon shape of the Rua is a silver Hau? Because it's stupid. It's incredibly, mindbogglingly stupid, and it's a perfect example of what I mean when I say the fandom depends on Greg's word way too fucking much.
As you pointed out in the tags, Akamai, as a word, means wisdom, and Wairuha means spirit, and indeed, we know from the 2001 story bible that the two Toa Kaita's domains were switched at some point in development. Akamai was always planned to be the combination of Tahu, Onua, and Pohatu, but was originally set to be the Kaita of Wisdom, while Wairuha (always Gali+Kopaka+Lewa) would have been the Kaita of Spirit, later changed to Valour. Somewhere along the line, the decision was made to make Akamai the Spirit of Valour, and Wairuha the Spirit of Wisdom. Why not swap the names too to keep the meanings consistent? I don't know, but they didn't. And it lead to a lot of confusion in some parts of the marketing.
Most obvious is the Power Pack set, which includes a silver Kanohi Hau it describes as, and I quote: "the Kanohi Rua, the Silver Mask of Valor, worn by Toa Kaita Wairuha formed from Tahu, Pohatu, and Onua." Tell me, do you notice anything wrong with that sentence? Like the fact that it is entirely incorrect? The clear mix-up in this description, you would think, would be enough to make anyone think that it can't be taken as canon, it's too blatant an error.
But apparently not! Because some fan took it upon themselves at one point to ask Greg to clear up the issue, asking if the true appearance of the Kanohi Rua was a Hau, as it appeared in the Power Pack set (and also Bionicle Heroes, which also mistakenly called it the Mask of Valour, which is shaped like a Hau, funnily enough (: ), or a Miru, as it is depicted in MNOG and literally everywhere else. And Greg's response was, and I quote again: "The Rua on the set is canon."
The set is canon. Which is what he always said when asked something like this. Every time. Of course, this time, that particular phrasing is entirely unhelpful, because Toa Kaita Wairuha is a set. A combo model, sure, whose green Miru certainly isn't canon because we know the Rua is silver. But I think, in this case, it should take a little precedence over the Power Pack, which rather obviously doesn't even know what it's referring to! It uses the name Rua and then uses half the details of the Aki in its description. It can't be trusted! Especially not when we have several other sources from MNOG to the comics, to the Legend of Mata Nui cutscenes, to the actual Wairuha model itself to confirm that the Rua looks like a Miru! Of course it does, none of Wairuha's components wear a Hau! And if that's still not enough, Wairuha Nuva's Rua Nuva also looks like a Miru Nuva, not a Hau Nuva, and there's no bad marketing to disagree this time! But no, because the question posed to Greg mentioned the Power Pack specifically and he then gave his standard answer (likely without thinking about it for more than half a second) the "canon" appearance of the Rua is now declared to be a silver Hau, which again, conflicts with every single actual appearance of the mask in-story.
Just ugh. I'm sorry, that has nothing to do with the Kaita themselves, it's just incredibly frustrating to me personally. Because it's the most common sense thing to figure out, but someone had to run to Greg to do the thinking for them, and his vague as balls answer has led to the obviously incorrect choice being declared "canon." It's ridiculous. That's what upsets me about it the most. It's just the ruling of one fan-run website, it means nothing in the long run. It's just so obviously wrong, but you can't convince anyone running the site of that because "Greg said so," and that, apparently, makes it law, no matter how stupid it is. And it's very stupid. I know that's mean, and I feel bad for it, but it's true.
I am plagued by thoughts of Toa Kaita and how their names and titles are determined.
Is every single one unique? That leaves the most room for creativity, and means the result of each fusion is dependent on the personalities of the individual Toa components, which seems like the most narratively satisfying option. But also, if every possible Kaita is unique, how do they avoid overlapping domains? Eventually Valour or Wisdom are going to be really fitting for some other combination of three Toa, or they'll just run out of fancy mental concepts to name themselves after.
Alternatively, do the names, or maybe just the titles, of any given Toa Kaita, depend on the elemental combination used to form them? Does every instance of Ta-Toa+Po-Toa+Onu-Toa result in Akamai? Does every instance of Ga-Toa+Ko-Toa+Le-Toa result in a Toa of Wisdom? I went and learned some math specifically to determine that there are 560 different possible 3-element combinations that can be formed from the 16 Toa elements, assuming all three have to be different, because that makes the most sense to me. 546 if Light and Shadow could not coexist within a single Kaita for some reason, and 455 if you don't count Shadow at all. Those are still really big numbers! But it seems a lot more feasible to come up with 500-ish attributes for each combination to represent than for each of the infinite combinations of individuals to result in something completely unique. But then again, it seems awfully limiting to simply assign a default attribute based on elemental alignment without taking into account the personalities of the constituent Toa at all. Would Vakama, Onewa, and Whenua really result in a Valour combination rather than something more tailored to them? Could Tuyet and Nidhiki really be part of a Wisdom combination?
Then perhaps there is a set number of possible Kaita and which of the limited (but likely still beyond extensive) list of possibilities the fusion forms is dependent on the three Toa's personalities? That feels like it's getting dangerously close to personality-based categorization though, and I've seen enough bad YA to know that's never a good idea.
Is any of this important at all? Oh no, not at all, we only ever see two Toa Kaita in the entire story and even they barely matter, this absolutely isn't the sort of thing that needs to be thought about deeply at all. But here I am, distracted by it anyway.
#bionicle#toa kaita#rua#tsd rants#i think you're right about the masks btw#especially since the toa mata had their golden kanohi by that point anyway#it's not specifically those mask powers that make wisdom or valour#it has more to do with the toa wearing them#(which is another reason the rua shouldn't look like a hau but i digress...)
