it’s not a mistranslation, mori ogai likes kids: an look into anime translation and the bungo stray dogs fanbase
tldr; yes mori is a pedophile, he is not a “doting father”, this is a key point to his character
4/8 people voted that i should make this post and mg boyfriend said that if that won, i then was essentially obligated to make it. so i am making it. before i begin i just want to state a few things:
1. i’m not saying “We need to CANCEL!!!! fictional character MORI OGAI!!!” i’m just trying to elaborate on a common misconception regarding his character.
2. at the same time i’m also not saying that this is a good aspect of his character. obviously. this is bad. mori is a villain.
3. this is mostly about translation and less about mori so if you’re looking just for him and don’t want any context, section four discusses him.
this will be seperated into sections to hopefully make it easier to read but overall i’m just kind of rambling and i didn’t edit this so if it’s disorganized feel free to ask questions
PART ONE: translation overview
contrary to popular belief, the process of officially translating manga or anime from japanese to english is not typically the work of one person, especially when we’re considering anime/manga published and produced by major companies (anime: bones, manga: kadokawa shoten*). at its core (though processes and the nitty gritty is dependent on tons of factors), a translation will go through at least one translator, a typesetter/subtitle timer (manga/anime), and editors. for official translations, it is REVIEWED by typically multiple editors and revisors before being sent off to the public.
i feel many people talking about mistranslations assume incompetence and that it’s just one guy doing whatever he wants with the original text while the original creators are none the wiser (this is not true). generally this is born from the common belief among anime fans that japan is full of incompetent and naive people who have been isolated from society their whole life (ex: arguments on how japan doesn’t know what black people are, “legal age of consent” debates, etc). japan is not a magical land where everybody cannot do wrong and is simply misunderstood; you are just fucking insufferable.
this isn’t to say that mistranslations don’t happen but rather that they aren’t as common as a lot of anime fans like to claim.
*kadokawa shoten is a major publisher. repetoire includes: cowboy bebop, lucky star, mirai nikki, re:zero. their videogame section also did lollipop chainsaw, fun fact.
PART TWO: translating for understanding
the intent of a translated work is not to copy the text word by word but rather to communicate the core messages and ideas to a different audience. as i’m sure you’re aware, japanese and english are two different languages. going beyond just cultural understandings, the languages themselves utilize two entirely different alphabets. with that, english and japanese have different abilities in what they can communicate with the alphabet provided! a great example of language barriers are PRONOUNS.
in a very boiled down version, english pronouns are categorized by relation to the speaker, gender, and possession.
she = girl that is not the speaker
me = speaker
his = owned by boy that is not the speaker
your = owned by the person being spoken to
our PRONOUNS are not hierarchical. an old man and a young boy will both be referred to as “he”. titles such as “mr.” and “doctor” can elaborate on status and respect, but generally, a male doctor is going to use the same pronouns as a male farmer.
pronouns obviously go a lot deeper than that and i’m glossing over a lot of stuff but if you can read what i’m saying here then you know enough english to comprehend pronouns.
on the other hand, japanese includes multiple levels of formality in pronouns. this means that their pronouns are heavily based in context and can be considered hierarchical.
in english, the sentence “he is over there” only tells us the relative location “he” is to the speaker and the area. we know nothing about who “he” is and require more information to understand his place in the world.
in japan, however, the sentence “he is over there” would be translated in a way that would either formalize or deformalize “he”, providing us information on who he is and his place in the world as well as the personality of the speaker (are they more laidback or are they polite?).
all of this is to say that if you directly translate from one language to another, you lose a lot of the original meaning. that is why meaning is more important than exact translation. so, using the “he is over there” example:
if the japanese phrase uses formal pronouns, the english translation may look something like this: “dr. lastname is over there” or “the old man is over there”. instead of just saying “he is over there”, words are changed to replicate the formal intent of the japanese dialogue.
going beyond this, certain cultural references may be added or changed to resonate better with english audiences. using a more infamous example

4kids changed dialogue that likely originally referenced an enjoyment of onigiri to revolve around food that american kids are more likely to be familiar with. though in this particular instance the translation feels silly and unnecessary (since brock is obviously not actually talking about jelly-filled donuts and the onigiri staying in the visuals of the scene just creates confusion), the intent carries over. brock likes a food with flavored filling that is easily transportable. this scene was translated with audience understanding in mind and that is the point!
PART TWO POINT FIVE : why understanding matters
if you’re thinking, ‘well hey, i think understanding is stupid. why can’t anime just carry over japanese phrases and terms and just explain them later???’. well first off, they do. to avoid jelly-donut incidents, foods and places are often left romanized rather than changed and translator notes are utilized to explain these things to english audiences. HOWEVER, if you keep every word that doesn’t have a direct literal/cultural translation, you end up with this:

this specific example comes from a fan translation of death note. by prioritizing keeping the original work intact, the translator created something that would be mocked on the internet for years. they did not need to explain what keikaku meant, they just needed to put “plan” in the sentence in the first place. “all according to plan” is more understandable to audiences than “all according to keikaku (btw keikaku means plan)”. it simply distracts from the point of the scene rather than adding to it.
PART THREE: actual mistranslation
as mentioned earlier, mistranslations DO occur. however, most mistranslations happen intentionally. whether it be for censorship purposes or a miscalculation from the editors, a lot of the most famous mistranslations happen for a reason.
sailor moon is the best example of this. despite being produced by a major company and generally having the resources to create a good translation, the examples of mistranslations in the anime and manga have warranted hundreds of their own articles and thinkpieces. why were the translations so fucked? it wasn’t by accident but rather shoddy attempts at censorship.
most famous would be how in the original english version, sailor neptune and sailor uranus were said to be cousins. they are not. they are girlfriends. and it wasn’t until the show was retranslated by viz media in 2016 that they were allowed to be girlfriends!
some other intentional mistranslations in sailor moon include
- changing a gay man to be a straight woman
- cutting out/toning down violence and death
- fully cutting out episodes or scenes and reversing scenes that were kept to make them longer
- different names
- more slang (this is a pretty common mistranslation and generally the editing of dialogue to be more #cool with the kids is the most prevalent type of change in translations. such as atsushi saying bruh)
- moral recaps of episodes
PART FOUR: what the fuck does this have to do with mori.
i really did all of this explaining to showcase how there is literally no fucking way that mori was poorly translated in english. it is literally impossible for his behavior to be an accident and, unless we need to put the editors and translators in jail, there is no way somebody would add that character trait to him if it wasn’t involved in the original.

here is just one example of so many. but pay attention to fukuzawa’s word choice. do you still LUST after young girls. lust, as a word, refers explicitly and solely to sexual desire. if the translator wanted to show a nonsexual relationship towards young girls, the word lust would not be used. the usage of lust is intentional and, again, unless somebody needs to be put on a fucking registry, not a word you can use by accident.
it’s also really important to consider his ability. and before you say that the real mori ogai was asexual so that means bsd mori’s ability doesn’t refer to sexual desires, be serious. no longer human isn’t about how osamu dazai can cancel out other people’s abilities, it’s a fictional autobiography about a guy named yōzō who is the bojack horseman of japanese literature. their abilities tend to relate pretty loosely to their namesakes and the characters themselves aren’t 1:1 representations of their authors.
with that being said, the book vita sexualis was banned at the time for being an affront to human nature. all mori said was that he doesn’t think he feels sexual attraction. asexuality doesn’t matter in our society like nobody gaf the way they did when the book was released. does it not make sense for asagiri to adapt the impact of his work as opposed to the work itself. we do not see asexuality as a taboo crime but liking kids is something we all agree is an affront to human nature. so it makes sense that his ability reflects sexual attraction that horrifies us. odd writing decision but you can see how he got from point a to point b. his ability is a reflection of his sexual desires and as you can see from the yosano flashback, he is able to change elise’s temperament and appearance (as during the war, she was taller and more obedient) if he so chooses. her existence as a petulant child is deliberate.
so it is with all this being said that the original intent for mori was to be a creep and that is carried over in meaning by the english translation.

The Worst Night Since the Last Worst Night
I’ve never posted about this fic on this account, so I guess today is the day to talk about it.
At the very end of 2016, I wrote a Yunoteru-centered fanfic titled The Worst Night Since The Last Worst Night. It takes place in the middle of volume 11 of the manga/episode 23 of the anime, and I think it slides well into the existing continuity.
It’s four chapters long, and I’d appreciate it if you decided to give it a try.
Summary:
With all of the other diary holders dead, Yuno and Yukiteru have been living at the Gasai household and watching the the number of singularities steadily increase as the apocalypse looms. After a rough day of distrust and hurt feelings on 7/25, sleep doesn't come easily for either of them - leading to a 3:00 a.m. conversation.
Excerpt:
As he stepped into the kitchen, Yuki saw the source of the sounds he kept hearing. Yuno was standing there with a glass of water in her right hand. In her left, she was pulling a carving knife out of the knife block on the counter, then dropping it back into place, then repeating the action over and over. There was a ker-shink as she withdrew it and an uh-ching as she dropped it back into the block. The noises repeated each time as she pulled the knife out, then in. Out, then in. Out, then in.
It looked like — well, it wasn't  smart or appropriate to think about what it looked like. Yuki did his best not to stare at the knife block, locking his face onto Yuno's. "Uhhh, hiii," he said gently. "Sorry. You, uh… you having trouble sleeping?"
Yuno nodded a little. Ker-shink. "The sirens outside woke me up a few minutes ago," she told him. "Lots of traffic noise on the nearest streets, too, so that didn't help." Uh-ching. "I felt thirsty, so I just came in for a quick sip."
"Same here," Yuki said in agreement. Ker-shink. "The thirst part, I mean. I didn't actually hear anything from outside." He felt a lot more nervous than he would've liked, and only partly because Yuno was playing with the knife. Uh-ching. It was also partly due to seeing Yuno in her short purple nightgown.
"They're evacuating the city," Yuno explained. Ker-shink. "I wonder where they think they're gonna go. There's no running away from this one." Uh-ching. "Sad and stupid, really." Ker-shink.
Operation: Don't Look at the Knife Block is a spectacular failure, Yuki thought to himself. Maybe I can get her to move away from it instead.
"Soooooo," Yuki began awkwardly. He paused and tried to smile in a desperate attempt to lighten the mood. "Do you, uh… like crescent moons?" he asked, gesturing towards the kitchen window. Totally lame, Yukiteru, he thought. At least I sound like I was joking.
Yuno turned and moved away from the knife block, setting her glass of water on the counter as she went. Thank GOD, Yuki thought quietly, gritting his teeth in a combination of delayed stress and sharp relief.
As Yuno got closer to the window, she appeared to become transfixed by the sight of the moon. She stopped in the middle of the floor, staring up at the light beaming down upon her. "They're okay," she answered him finally. The serious tone of her response was entirely at odds with Yuki's goofy question.

I’m hoping to one day write more with these two in the future beyond that WIP, as well.

Hey I just remembered you watched Mirai Nikki a while ago, did you finish it? I really wanted to hear your thoughts on it
Oh! Yep, sure did! I finished it... a few weeks ago? I think? Idk lol
Ultimately, I do not have a ton of thoughts on it? My best friend liked it, so I watched it because he's always watching things I like so I like watching thing he likes lol. I honestly didn't know anything about it going into it except that Yuno was a yandere. So the whole plot line being the fact that someone wanted to become god was a pleasant surprise
I don't have much to say about the plot itself. It was pretty straight forward. I think the pacing was a little wonky, which was why it took me a bit to finish the series, considering how short it is. Usually I can mow through something of that length in a day or two. It just took me a bit to get genuinely hooked, because the first part of it was a little slow, and the first few encounters with other diary users were a little repetitive. My attention wasn't truly grabbed until the part with all the dogs, and then I was like "oh okay this is starting to get genuinely interesting now" and then I was hooked hooked as soon as Yuki's parents died and he went off the deep end and started justifying killing people because if he became god he could just bring them back and reset everything. That was genuinely really interesting.
I also figured out the plot twist of Yuno being from a different timeline really early on? I mean, they basically put that in the intro, so I think you were supposed to, but as soon as they found a third body with her dead parents I was like "oh yep, this Yuno came from a different timeline and killed the Yuno from this one so she could get to Yuki." It wasn't a bad plot twist, and it is good for plot twists to have clear hints, but it might have been a little too predictable for the tone of the series.
Um... of course there is Yuno and Yuki's whole relationship? It obviously is super unhealthy, and while on one hand that is extremely obvious, there are times the anime seems to try and make the audience genuinely root for it, and frame it in a cute, loving light which was... not great? I also just have a lot of beef with "yandere" characters, considering how they're violent caricatures of borderline personality disorder, which is bad obviously. It's not that Yuno herself isn't an interesting character, but given the context and the whole "trope" of yanderes and how those characters contribute to those harmful stereotypes of BPD, she makes me a little :/ I couldn't really thoroughly enjoy her because of that. Like we all know I love a fun, unhealthy, codependent toxic relationship in fiction, but given all of this ^^^ yeah, not for me, I have to admit
And then everything at the end with Murmur was.... so very strange? Idk, very rushed, and felt out of place, I would have preferred that not happened and she not meddled in the game at all.
I did like a lot of the side characters though! My favorite was... fuck, I can't remember her name, but the bomb lady with the eyepatch! She was cool! And her little romance with the detective guy was fun, I genuinely really liked all of that. The couple that made was a diary user was also nice too, I liked them, and their deaths kinda hurt
Overall, I don't have a lot of super strong feelings about the series one way or the other. It definitely wasn't any pinnacle of fantastic storytelling, but I don't think it was horrendous by any means. It had some really interesting aspects, even if most of them weren't explored to their fullest potential. The fan service was a bit much at times, but when is that not true of fan service so eh, not much to say in that department
But yeah! Those are my (albeit jumbled) thoughts about the series :D

Time travel in SnK
EDIT: Although the comment that made me realise it was rather rude I have to admit that it’s wrong what I stated about AT holders being able to talk to another through their memories, as in Eren’s case it’s only possible thanks to Zeke. That being said, my post is not entirely pointless, as the question remains if time travel in general is a thing in SnK considering the fact that Eren did influence the past, though through Zeke and not through the AT’s skills.
So it’s confirmed that the Attack Titan can time travel through memories, but I‘m wondering if they’re able to change the past and, consequently, the present and future? We know that they can see the past and future of their titan, but can they actually change anything or is it something like the Three Eyed Raven from GoT in the sense of “the ink is dry”? We know that Isayama is a huge GoT fan so it wouldn’t be too surprising if he let himself be inspired by that. But I’m also thinking of the Netflix series Dark, in which the characters find themselves unable to change the past during their time travels - although they want to (and try to) because they know the future and want to change/avoid it. Unfortunately it was not yet revealed why that is, but the general message that comes across is that some things are simply meant to happen to make other, more important things possible.
Anyway, once time travel is involved in any story it all becomes ridiculously confusing and abstract. It’s no help that we got contradicting hints this chapter. First Grisha states that the AT is able to foresee the future by looking into future memories and doesn’t mention any more than that.

Then he lets himself be influenced by Eren, which indicates that it must be, in fact, possible to somehow influence/change the past.

So, on the one hand, there’s a question I’ve already seen other fans asking: Why would Grisha let himself be influenced by Eren and kill the family if he knew it’d be a mistake (as he’d seen the future and doesn’t want it to come true)? The answer could be that Grisha doesn’t think the AT is able to change the past anyway, as he himself (implicitly) stated, so he’s doing it because it’s “meant to happen”. Still another option would be that Grisha hadn’t seen the future yet when he killed the Reiss family, but only when he touched Frieda during their fight and by then it was already too late. That still leaves the question why he would then go and give his titan to Eren anyway, but maybe time traveller Eren forced this event later, too.
On the other hand though, there’s the question why Grisha would tell Zeke he has to stop Eren if he thought that wasn’t possible in the first place - since he already saw the future in which Eren’s dream comes true? Also, by speaking to Grisha Eren basically is already influencing the past in a way, making him kill the whole Reiss family - and this is where it gets complicated.
Once changing/influencing the past is possible, multiple alternate timelines may be created. It’s hard to wrap one’s head around this because at some point, you lose track of which timeline is the “real” or “original” one and also of what’s even the past anymore. Because once you travel into the past, it kind of becomes the present, and the present is what defines the future. There are different kinds of concepts for time travel in fiction. Take Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, for example: Harry and Hermione travel through time in order to “change the past” (e.g. rescuing Buckbeak and Sirius), but they’re not really changing the past, because everything they do during their time travel has basically already happened when it was the present (Hermione throwing the stones, her howling in the forest, Harry’s patronus, etc.), confusing them at the time because they didn’t know why it all happened (until they lived through it again). So in this example, there’s only one timeline, and it’s not really possible to change it, as time travel, if it happens, is predestined. In Game of Thrones it’s basically the same, because there’s only one timeline that Bran/Three Eyed Raven can see, but not change - “the ink is dry”. In the manga/anime series Mirai Nikki though, for example, multiple timelines are created through time travel, and like this it is actually possible to change what has happened and to create a whole new future in an alternate universe.
The question is: Which concept does Isayama plan to use for SnK?
I know this scribble doesn’t answer anything really but I needed to get this out of my head. Ignore me or tell me your thoughts, I’m seriously curious where this is going.

Mirrored Perspectives - Future Diary Fanfic
I’m struggling to write my next chapter of The Yearbook, and during my attempts to make progress I accidentally wrote something else entirely for a much-deader fandom yet again. So yeah, I feel like I’m disappointing both other people and myself, but at least I’m writing something?
This one-shot is an all-third-person consideration of how Yuno Gasai and Aru Akise both wound up at the same conclusion: That the best way to keep Yukiteru safe is to kill the other person.

Help me human! I have seen comparisons where some would say I'm reaching, and I have only shared my findings with a few. I am quite sure 99% of them have no idea what I am talking about, but as another human that likes the boys that are crazy about love, maybe you can help me? Please, I must give these other humans a chance at peace!
I’m here to spread the word!  Yanderes for all!  We’ll show th-*trips and falls face first* …I’m okay.  
A-hem, well, despite my inner me yelling something about me “not being qualified” to represent well…anything, I’m gonna ignore her and indulge a little.
Yeah, sometimes it can be a little hard to explain to people exactly WHY we like yanderes.  There will be some cases where you will find that either some people just won’t get it no matter how much you explain to them, or they kinda do get where you’re coming from but can’t sympathize with you because it’s just not to their tastes.  And that’s okay.  Eventually you will be able to find people with similar interests, trust me.  You can never force someone else to like something though (if anything, that’ll make them hate it more).
I started this blog as a way of self expression for myself (like to get my own personal taste in yanderes off my chest).  Along the way though, it’s actually become a nice way to explore the different facets of people’s fascination with yanderes in fiction.
I actually had a conversation with my brother not too long away about how I had an interest in yanderes while he had an interest in tsunderes.  He could kinda get where I was coming from because he’s also a fan of Mirai Nikki/Future diary, so he knows what a yandere is and perceives Yuki and Yuno’s relationship to have culminated into pure romance (like many do).  So that kind of helped, but I also realized when talking to him that it’s a lot more difficult for me to explain something like this when talking with someone.  I’m a much stronger writer honestly.
And thus I started pumping out analyses from this blog.  It was mostly to kind of organize my thoughts.  Sometimes you don’t actually pinpoint right away what you like about something until you lay it all out on a table.  That’s when I realized “oh!  I like the terror more than the romance!”  So I found something I was excited about and got to writing.
Along the way, people on tumblr started to show that they had similar interests, so clearly I had nailed at least ONE aspect of the yandere that people could relate too.  But during the process I would also get people who would not only expand upon what I had said, but were also not afraid to voice their view and tastes for yanderes.  And so far all of these people have been very amicable towards me, so thank you for that :)
After seeing these different points of view, I thought “hmm, I wonder how hard it would be to try to think from another’s perspective.”  There were certainly parts I agreed with, like I didn’t object to a yandere being redeemed.  So I started to have all sorts of questions pop up in my head:
What is a yandere?  Are they always bad?  How are they a horror character?  How are they dangerous?  Why are people initially attracted to them?  Can they become a genuine love interest?  What kinds of good endings have I seen?
I think of the material I’ve watched or read from books, manga, anime, films, and games to use that in a more generalized format to try to come up with a couple of ideas.  Now what I say IS mostly my opinion, but I try to stay broad enough and list story elements that I feel show up frequently enough or that people can at least grasp.  Then other people are more than welcome to step in either to add to what I’ve said or present a different point of view.
I’ve had fun both talking about what I like as well as exploring other reasons why people like yanderes.  It’s actually helped me feel more comfortable and like them even MORE now due to how complex the character type is.  You have the simple elements of obsessive love and danger, but depending on the characters and how the story is built, there’s a lot of different ways things can go.
Now if you’re trying to explain to someone who either a) doesn’t know what a yandere is or b) is kind of weirded out by the idea, you can try some baby steps at first.  See if you can find some kind of material they’ve been exposed to with a yandere (if it’s anime, Yuno from Future Diary is a good bet for example, while “Fatal Attraction” is a good live action movie example).  Start with something well known and kind of feel out what they thought.
If the person exhibits a REALLY strong fear or resentment for the yandere character, it might not be a great idea to push too hard on the discussion.  You’re either going to have to accept that it’s just not their thing and just talk about other stuff with them, or you’re going have to very carefully craft your argument ahead of time.  Find a way not to start off really strong or you’ll just end up pushing them away honestly.  Start small and simple if you can.  Sorry I’m not giving great direction on this, maybe I’ll think on it more later and do a post about it :P

9. Most disliked characters? Why? To answer this question was the reason I was born. Prepare for some mega. fucking. salt. In no particular order aside from the first two. Also regular disclaimers, don’t come at me with a pitchfork if your fave is on here. These are just my opinions.
1. Rika, my most hated fictional character of all time and will remain so until the day I die. Her entire character consists of “boo fucking hoo why won’t anyone love me even though I’m abusive and have no intentions of changing my ways :(” and also shallow sun metaphors.  She’s just garbage in its finest form.
2. Ruruka from dr3. My hatred for Ruruka is close and personal and I nearly hate her as much as Rika but not as much. Fuck her and her “uwuwu Seiko won’t eat my candy because she is fucking allergic so I’m gonna treat her like shit uwuwu!” and fuck everyone who defends her blatantly manipulative bullshit. It sickens me to watch her fans excuse her behavior because abusive friendships don’t exist, clearly!
3. Hitomi from Madoka Magica. I’ve watched that anime when I was 12, and I hated her. It’s been what? 6 years? And I still hate her. I’m sorry but she is an awful friend and she can take her manipulative bullshit and exit the stage on the left thank you very much.
4. Yuki from Mirai Nikki. Akise did not die for him to have sex with Yuno and not give a shit over the fact that all his friends are dead because of him. Can you tell the trend. “Bad friend” characters disgust me l o l.
5. Ciel from Kuroshitsuji. THAT FUCKING CIRCUS ARC.
6. Saionji from sdr2. Literally you could cut out half of her dialogue lines and nothing would change. Even her death had no impact.
7. Mutsuki from Tokyo Ghoul. “How not to write a yandere 101″. 
8. V. I have already expressed my disdain for him here here and here so I don’t think I needa elaborate. He could have been a great character full of heart ache and development but honestly his character just didn’t deliver. Ray was literally the only enjoyable thing about his entire route.
9. Special mention: Kamoshido (persona 5), Kando and Hideyoshi (nightshade), Mado (Tokyo ghoul) and Jiyeon (Dandelion). I don’t have any special reasons for hating these guys, they’re just fucking assholes.
18. Does not shipping something ‘popular’ mean you’re in denial and/or biased? I mean everyone has bias when it comes to ships. The denial can really only come into play if the ship is canon but honestly, how many canon ships are actually popular. Not many I bet LMAO. Yibi from School 2015 is canon and to this day I’m still fucking salty and I’m sure many other people are too. When that ship became canon, people were furious and I empathize 100% because I was furious too.

I wonder… if Killing Stalking featured a non-bisexual relationship and added supernatural characteristics would it have also been receiving this intense backlash? There’s been tons of works featuring this type of unhealthy abusive relationship (there’s even some that are but aren’t portrayed as such which is even more disturbing), some works more explicit and disturbing than others. And yet this is the first time I have seen such a strong reaction, as if it were something new in story telling.
So I can’t help but wonder about the ‘ifs’, but then I remember Mirai Nikki. A series that was highly popular as well and featured a character named Yuno who had an unhealthy obsession over the protagonist. Towards the point she was willing to harm those that pose a threat, regardless if they were friends or family of the protagonist. She even kidnapped and held him hostage. Forced him to announce their relationship as official, since he feared his friends will come to harm otherwise. Their relationship was romanticized and there’s a bunch of fans that seriously ship them, and yet if I remember correctly I never saw threats to the fans nor callouts for being disgusting/sickening/revolting for supporting that type of relationship nor questioning along the lines “how sick can you be to enjoy that kind of thing?!” So, I can’t help but think the supernatural characteristics added a huge factor. A simple addition of a fictional genre, prevented the series from getting this kind of backlash.

Sword Art Online was never a Death Game anime 
I want to start by saying there are lot of valid reasons to dislike SAO.  I enjoyed the Aincrad arc though it was flawed.  I had a lot of problems with Alfheim and Gungale though there were also good moments.   The two arcs that made up the second half of season 2 were great,, Mother's Rosario especially is my favorite so far. I haven't seen Ordinal Scale yet, I will be waiting for the Dubs to watch either it or season 3. A common theme I've seen among critics of SAO, especially those who hate even the original arc, including Digibro himself in the PCP Podcast on "Plebs", is a notion that it was somehow supposed to be a Death Game Anime, and that the show then ruined it's own sense of urgencey. Mirai Nikki was a Death Game anime, Fate/Stay Night and Fate/Zero are Death Game animes.  Magical Girl Raising Project is a Death Game Anime (I just watched it and am still processing my thoughts on it).  It's a genre that has an inherently limited appeal to me.  I watches RP because I'm into Magical Girls, Mirai Nikki for the Yandere and Fate/ because I'm into Arthurian Legend and other mythologies.  But if SAO had been structured like a Death Game that it'd have had almost none of what I like about it. Digibro said in the last episode of the DigiBros Super Mario 64 let's play, when they were speculating on Zelda BotW (it was recorded before the game came out) that he doesn't like when Video Games have a sense of urgency.  I agree with him on that, and that is why I like the very parts of SAO he considered the most useless.  Every Video Game he could praise for not having a sense of urgency still has a theoretical sense of urgency, if Link doesn't get to the end and defeat Ganon eventually then Hyrule is doomed.  And that is all the opening episodes of SAO were meant to do, establish a problem that they need to solve, eventually. But the appeal to me was always about these character living in a digital fantasy world, not about them getting out of it.  So my favorite episodes were largely the "Filler" which apparently came from the second Light Novel. Digibro most hated the Murder Mystery two parter.  I loved those, for the most part.  As a fan of Holmesian stories I enjoyed seeing this speculation on how you'd apply Holmsian deductive reasoning in an MMO world.  And when they figured out the deaths had been faked I was quite satisfied.  Then the story dragged on adding some more twists and I soured on it a little. I also agree that like in the original web novels Asuna should have killed that one guy.  Asuna is also Best Girl. Mother's Basement did a video on SAO where he said it was ruined by the Yui character turning out to be an AI, which he said destroyed the sense that anyone can die.  I have come to be quite personally annoyed by shows wanting to create that illusion, and viewers who ever buy into it.  If you're paying attention you can easily tell who isn't eligible to die on Game of Thrones, or the books it was based on.  Ned Stark was a character created specifically to die early on creating that illusion, and Mami Tomoe was Ned Stark as a Magical Girl, in more ways then one. And I'm annoyed by the people who want a show where anyone can die.   Whenever I'm watching something and a character death happens that did not feel sufficiently built up to, it simply comes off as bad writing to me, even when it's a character I didn't much care for.  This is part of what slowly soured me to The Vampire Diaries, a show I loved at first. And when it's done to a character I love, like my Waifu Anna, it just enrages me.  I hate when shows do things just for shock value, and plenty of my favorite moments have been completely predictable ones.   And that is Why I Like Prequels. As a Christian I like Adoption themes in my fiction, something I talked about in a Force Awakens post last year "Rey is a Skywalker but not by Blood". So in this setting I quite like the idea of our protagonists adopting an AI character.  So Mother's Basement desire to say Yui ruined SAO by being an AI offends me, just as it offends me when people say Dawn ruined Buffy. That is all for this post.  Expect maybe something in the future about SAO as a Gnostic Allegory, the first two arcs anyway.
